The purpose of this investigation was to assess changes in total energy expenditure (TEE), body weight (BW) and body composition following a peripheral blood stem cell transplant and following participation in a 3-month duration, moderate-intensity, mixed-type exercise programme. The doubly labelled and singly labelled water methods were used to measure TEE and total body water (TBW). Body weight and TBW were then used to calculate percentage body fat (%BF), and fat and fat-free mass (FFM). TEE and body composition measures were assessed pretransplant (PI), immediately post-transplant (PII) and 3 months post-PII (PIII). Purpose : Myelomeningocele is a complex disease often complicated by obesity for reasons not well understood. The objectives of this study were to determine body composition and energy expenditure of children with MMC. Methods : Resting energy expenditure (REE), body composition and anthropometry were measured in 19 children with MMC (12 M, 7 F). Total energy expenditure (TEE) was estimated using a 3-day activity record. Energy intake (EI) was measured in seven children (5 M, 2 F) with MMC. Data were then compared with predicted values. Results : Mean REE ( n = 19) was 4680 ±1452 kJ/day (96.1 ±18.1% of predicted REE). The range was large (45.8-125.7% of predicted REE). TEE ( n = 7) was 4344 ±2376 kJ/day, hence only 73 34% of predicted TEE. EI ( n = 7) was 6560 ±1329 kJ/day, approximating a normal energy requirement. Overall, BCM was lower than expected values. Conclusions : REE in children with MMC is variable when compared to predicted values. TEE was found to be lower in children with MMC than predicted values and EI was similar to predicted values in this group of seven children. BCM is reduced in children with MMC when compared to expected values.

Trans-membrane proteins of the p24 family are abundant, oligomeric proteins predominantly found in cis-Golgi membranes. They are not easily studied in vivo and their functions are controversial. We found that p25 can be targeted to the plasma membrane after inactivation of its canonical KKXX motif (KK to SS, p25SS), and that p25SS causes the co-transport of other p24 proteins beyond the Golgi complex, indicating that wild-type p25 plays a crucial role in retaining p24 proteins in cis-Golgi membranes. We then made use of these observations to study the intrinsic properties of these proteins, when present in a different membrane context. At the cell surface, the p25SS mutant segregates away from both the transferrin receptor and markers of lipid rafts, which are enriched in cholesterol and glycosphingolipids. This suggests that p25SS localizes to, or contributes to form, specialized membrane domains, presumably corresponding to oligomers of p25SS and other p24 proteins. Once at the cell surface, p25SS is endocytosed, together with other p24 proteins, and eventually accumulates in late endosomes, where it remains confined to well-defined membrane regions visible by electron microscopy. We find that this p25SS accumulation causes a concomitant accumulation of cholesterol in late endosomes, and an inhibition of their motility - two processes that are functionally linked. Yet, the p25SS-rich regions themselves seem to-exclude not only Lamp1 but also accumulated cholesterol. One may envision that p25SS accumulation, by excluding cholesterol from oligomers, eventually overloads neighboring late endosomal membranes with cholesterol beyond their capacity (see Discussion). In any case, our data show that p25 and presumably other p24 proteins are endowed with the intrinsic capacity to form highly specialized domains that control membrane composition and dynamics. We propose that p25 and other p24 proteins control the fidelity of membrane transport by maintaining cholesterol-poor membranes in the Golgi complex.

Ultrasonic absorption in polymer gel dosimeters was investigated. An ultrasonic interferometer was used to study the frequency (f) dependence of the absorption coefficient (alpha) in a polyacrylamide gel dosimeter (PAG) in the frequency range 5-20 MHz. The frequency dependence of ultrasonic absorption deviated from that of an ideal viscous fluid. The presence of relaxation mechanisms was evidenced by the frequency dependence of alpha/f(2) and the dispersion in ultrasonic velocity. It was concluded that absorption in polymer gel dosimeters is due to a number of relaxation processes which may include polymer-solvent interactions as well as relaxation due to motion of polymer side groups. The dependence of ultrasonic absorption on absorbed dose and formulation was also investigated in polymer gel dosimeters as a function of pH and chemical composition. Changes in dosimeter pH and chemical composition resulted in a variation in ultrasonic dose response curves. The observed dependence on pH was considered to be due to pH induced modifications in the radiation yield while changes in chemical composition resulted in differences in polymerisation kinetics. Activated sludge floes are a flocculated mass of microorganisms, extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and adsorbed organic and inorganic material. The structure of the floes is very heterogeneous and floes with very different properties and morphologies may occur, depending on the conditions in the activated sludge treatment plant and wastewater composition. Present thinking suggests that cations, such as calcium, create cationic bridges with EPS excreted by the bacteria and thereby hold the various floe constituents together. However, due to the complex and heterogeneous nature of activated sludge, the mechanisms have neither been thoroughly investigated nor successfully quantified. A better understanding and description of the biological flocculation process is necessary in order to establish more efficient operational strategies. The main aim of this study was to get a comprehensive and unique insight into the floe properties of activated sludge and to assess the relative impact of chemical and physical parameters. A variety of sludges from full scale treatment plants with different settling properties were characterised. The interrelationships between floe parameters such as composition of EPS, surface properties and floe structure, and their effect on the flocculation and separation properties were assessed. The results indicate that the EPS, both in terms of quantity and quality, are very important for the floe properties of the activated sludge. However, presence of filaments may alter the physical properties of the floes considerably. The EPS showed positive correlations to sludge volume index (SVI) if only sludges with low or moderate numbers of filaments were included. The surface properties were more affected by the composition of the EPS than by the number of filaments. The EPS showed positive correlation to negative surface charge and a negative correlation to relative hydrophobicity and flocculation ability. The negative correlation between flocculation ability and amount of EPS was surprising. The shear sensitivity, measured as degree of erosion of floes when subjected to shear, was more affected by floe size and number of filaments than amount of EPS.

Background : Femoral shaft fracture incidence increases in older adults and is associated with low-energy trauma. Apart from bone density, the distribution and size of bone contributes to its strength. Aim : To examine if bone geometry and density of the femoral mid-shaft in older adults differs by sex and race, we studied 197 White women, 225 Black women, 242 White men, and 148 Black men aged 70-79 years participating in the Health, Aging, and Body Composition study; a prospective cohort study in the USA. A secondary purpose of the study was to examine the association of site-specific muscle and fat to bone geometry and density. Subjects and methods : Subjects were community-dwelling and reported no difficulty walking one-quarter of a mile or climbing stairs. Mid-femoral volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD, mg cm -3 ), total area (TA), cortical area (CA), medullary area (MA), cross-sectional moments of inertia (CSMI: I x , I y , J ), and muscle and fat areas (cm 2 ) were determined by computed tomography (CT; GE CT-9800, 10 mm slice thickness). Results : vBMD was greater in men than women with no difference by race ( p < 0.001). Bone areas and area moments of inertia were also greater in men than women ( p < 0.001), with Black women having higher values than White women for TA and CA. Standardizing geometric parameters for body size differences by dividing by powers of femur length did not negate the sex difference for TA and MA. Significant differences ( p < 0.05) among the four groups also remained for I x and J . Mid-thigh muscle area was an independent contributor to TA in all groups (Std beta = 0.181-0.351, p < 0.05) as well as CA in women (Std beta = 0.246-0.254, p < 0.01) and CSMI in White women (Std beta = 0.175-0.185, p < 0.05). Further, muscle area was a significant contributor to vBMD in Black women. Conclusion : These results indicate that bone geometry and density of the femoral diaphysis differs primarily by sex, rather than race, in older well-functioning adults. In addition, site-specific muscle area appears to have a potential contributory role to bone geometry parameters, especially in women.

Rheological properties of four unprocessed unifloral Australian honeys (heath, tea tree, yapunya, and yellow box) and an artificial honey were analysed at 20degreesC. A model previously used to describe viscosity data of various sugar and sugar mixtures was used to describe the concentration dependence of the viscosity of honey samples with varying moisture contents. The model successfully described the sugar concentration dependence of the unadulterated and medium moisture (70-85% solids) range honey samples.

The effects of copolymer composition and microstructure on the radiation chemistry of styrene/alkane and alpha-methylstyrene/alkane copolymers have been studied. The primary radical species formed on radiolysis of the copolymers at 77 K, and identified by ESR spectroscopy, are the same as those formed during radiolysis of the homopolymers. The yields of radicals for the copolymer are as predicted assuming that the cross-section is proportional to the electron density of each component; however, there is some evidence of radical migration to aromatic groups at 77 K. Changes in molecular structure on irradiation were detected by using C-13 NMR spectroscopy. Evidence of the consumption of terminal double bonds, and chain scission in alpha-methylstyrene/alkane copolymers was found. Measurements of viscosity supported the mechanism of cross-linking predominating in styrene/alkane copolymers, while in alpha-methylstyrene/alkane copolymers chain scission was the major result of irradiation. Muitos alimentos são conhecidos apenas em alguns grupos humanos, por diversas razões. Outros, entretanto, tornaram-se praticamente universais, sendo conhecidos e apreciados em quase todas as sociedades humanas com condições econômicas que permitam sua inclusão no âmbito do comércio internacional. Um deles, em especial, está no foco de interesse da presente investigação. Não se trata de alimento relevante para a composição dos hábitos alimentares cotidianos em qualquer grupo humano, mas que ocupa posição privilegiada em termos de preferência em diferentes lugares do mundo: o chocolate. O presente trabalho buscou conhecer e analisar fatores que influenciam o consumo de chocolate de um conjunto de pessoas e as modalidades de explicação ou justificação que apresentam para o seu padrão de consumo e para o tipo de interesse que têm pelo chocolate. Para a coleta de dados foi utilizado um questionário com 62 questões fechadas e 1 questão aberta - que utilizou a técnica da evocação. Participaram 313 homens e mulheres, a maioria na faixa etária entre 16 e 25 anos. Foram exploradas variáveis como situação sócio-econômica, peso corporal, estado de saúde, frequência e quantidade de chocolate consumido, preferência em relação ao consumo de alimentos em geral, além de terem sido verificadas quais situações os participantes admitem estarem associadas a variações no padrão de consumo de chocolate, tendo sido incluídas tanto situações estressantes quanto relaxantes. Foram abordados também alguns pontos considerados controversos a respeito do consumo de chocolate, que são objeto de interesse científico e merecem grande atenção dos meios de comunicação. Houve interesse especial na discussão das diferenças encontradas quando os padrões de consumo de homens e mulheres são comparados. Ficou evidente, no grupo de participantes, que a influência de muitos dos aspectos considerados sobre o consumo do chocolate não se processam de forma idêntica sobre homens e mulheres. Confirma-se a grande difusão cultural da ideia de que mulheres comem mais chocolate que homens e que a seleção de alimentos feminina é mais sensível a fatores associados a variações de estados afetivos, o que pode ter papel na discussão de dependências e transtornos alimentares. Em consonância com a literatura sobre comportamento alimentar, os dados apoiam a proposição de que é insuficiente considerar apenas fatores culturais ou biológicos, de maneira isolada, para explicar os motivos que levam ao consumo de determinados alimentos.

Esse texto é um convite para discutir alguns atravessamentos colocados nas escolas a partir da implementação e implantação do Ensino Fundamental de Nove Anos, como política de governo reorganiza os espaçostempos da escola, impõe um currículo prescrito, uma avaliação por objetivos e coloca em discussão o que é ser criança e viver a infância na escola. Como objetivo principal, busca problematizar o processo de implementação e implantação do Ensino Fundamental de Nove Anos no município de Vitória-ES e suas implicações no entre-lugar da Educação Infantil e Ensino Fundamental. Para tanto foi necessário estar no cotidiano escolar, viver, sentir e conversar com os sujeitos praticantes: as criançasalunos; as professoras e as pedagogas. Nesse sentido, três movimentos foram realizados: o primeiro movimento consiste em um levantamento de dados documentais, pareceres, leis, diretrizes no âmbito nacional e municipal que determinaram a obrigatoriedade do Ensino Fundamental de Nove Anos; o segundo movimento consiste em trazer para análise alguns artigos publicados na Associação Nacional de Pós-Graduação e Pesquisa em Educação (ANPED) em quatro Grupos de Trabalho (GT) que abordam o tema “Ensino Fundamental de Nove Anos”, e também textos que circulam nas escolas e que foram organizados pelo Ministério da Educação e Cultura (MEC); o terceiro movimento consiste na pesquisa realizada em um Centro Municipal de Educação Infantil (CMEI) e em uma Escola Municipal de Ensino Fundamental (EMEF) no município de Vitória, no decorrer dos anos de 2011 e 2012, onde foi possível conversar com as criançasalunos de duas turmas do 1º ano, com as professoras e pedagogas. Utiliza como aporte teórico-metodológico as pesquisas nos/dos/com os cotidianos (CERTEAU 1994; ALVES 2001; FERRAÇO 2003) onde foi possível a apropriação de diferentes instrumentos de pesquisa, como: o diário de campo, recurso importante na intenção de capturar movimentos, falas e expressões; as conversas como tentativa de aproximação com os sujeitos para um fazer com e as oficinas de literatura como dispositivo de criação e produção de outros modos de pensar a criança e a infância. Na tentativa de discutir o lugar da criança no Ensino Fundamental de Nove Anos o conceito de devir-criança de Deleuze (1997) ajuda a pensar no movimento da criança como presença potente que produz outros modos de vida mais belos e intensos na escola e no currículo. O conceito de entre-lugar de Bhabha (2007) fortalece as discussões entre CMEI e EMEF como espaçostempos de negociações. As discussões de Kohan (2003) colocam em debate o lugar da infância que não indica um tempo cronológico, mas pensa em um encontro com a infância, com a experiência da infância. E Larrosa (2004) que com o conceito de experiência nos ajuda a pensar em um currículo-experiência, currículo esse que não está localizado no documento prescrito, nos espaçostempos da Educação Infantil ou do Ensino Fundamental, também não se localiza na criança, ou em uma dada infância, mas na composição com a escola, com as crianças, com as infâncias e isso só é possível no encontro com a criança que existe em nós.
