Experimental values for the solubility of carbon dioxide, ethane, methane, oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, argon and carbon monoxide in 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate, [bmim][PF6] - a room temperature ionic liquid - are reported as a function of temperature between 283 and 343 K and at pressures close to atmospheric. Carbon dioxide is the most soluble and hydrogen is the least soluble of the gases studied with mole fraction solubilities of the order of 10-2 and 10-4, respectively. All the mole fraction solubilities decrease with temperature except for hydrogen for which a maximum is observed at temperatures close to 310 K. From the variation of solubility, expressed as Henry's law constants, with temperature, the partial molar thermodynamic functions of solvation such as the standard Gibbs energy, the enthalpy, and the entropy are calculated. The precision of the experimental data, considered as the average absolute deviation of the Henry's law constants from appropriate smoothing equations, is better than ±1%. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. Experimental values for the solubility of carbon dioxide, ethane, methane, oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, argon and carbon monoxide in 1-butyl-3- methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, [bmim][BF4] - a room temperature ionic liquid - are reported as a function of temperature between 283 K and 343 K and at pressures close to atmospheric. Carbon dioxide is the most soluble gas with mole fraction solubilities of the order of 10-2. Ethane and methane are one order of magnitude more soluble than the other five gases that have mole fraction solubilities of the order of 10-4. Hydrogen is the less soluble of the gaseous solutes studied. From the variation of solubility, expressed as Henry's law constants, with temperature, the partial molar thermodynamic functions of solvation such as the standard Gibbs energy, the enthalpy, and the entropy are calculated. Densities and viscosities of the ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium octylsulfate, [C4C1Im][C8SO4] were measured as a function of temperature between 313 K and 395 K. Solubilities of hydrogen and carbon dioxide were determined, between 283 K and 343 K, and at pressures close to atmospheric in [C4C1Im][C 8SO4] and in another ionic liquid based on the alkylsulfate anion-1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium ethylsulfate, [C 2C1Im][C2SO4]. Density and viscosity were measured using a vibrating tube densimeter from Anton Paar and a rheometer from Rheometrics Scientific with accuracies of 10-3 g cm -3 and 1%, respectively. Solubilities were obtained using an isochoric saturation technique and, from the variation of solubility with temperature, the partial molar thermodynamic functions of solvation, such as the standard Gibbs energy, the enthalpy, and the entropy, are calculated. The precision of the experimental data, considered as the average absolute deviation of the Henry's law constants from appropriate smoothing equations, is better than ±1%. © The Royal Society of Chemistry.

Density, ?, viscosity, ?, and conductivity, s, measurements of binary mixtures containing the pyrrolidinium nitrate Protic Ionic Liquid (PIL) and propylene carbonate (PC), are determined at the atmospheric pressure as a function of the temperature from (283.15 to 353.15) K and within the whole composition range. The temperature dependence of both the viscosity and conductivity of each mixture exhibits a non-Arrhenius behaviour, but is correctly fitted by using the Vogel–Tamman–Fulcher (VTF) equation. In each case, the best-fit parameters, such as the pseudo activation energy, View the MathML source and ideal glass transition temperature, T0 are then extracted. The excess molar volumes VE, and viscosity deviations from the ideality, ??, of each investigated mixture were then deduced from the experimental results, as well as, their apparent molar volumes, V?, thermal expansion coefficients ap, and excess Gibbs free energies (?G*E) of activation of viscous flow. The VE, apE, ?? values are negative over the whole composition range for each studied temperature therein. According to the Walden rule, the ionicity of each mixture was then evaluated as a function of the temperature from (283.15 to 353.15) K and of the composition. Results have been then discussed in terms of molecular interactions and molecular structures in this binary mixture.

Flow responsive passive samplers offer considerable potential in nutrient monitoring in catchments; bridging the gap between the intermittency of grab sampling and the high cost of automated monitoring systems. A commercially available passive sampler was evaluated in a number of river systems encapsulating a gradient in storm response, combinations of diffuse and point source pressures, and levels of phosphorus and nitrogen concentrations. Phosphorus and nitrogen are sequestered to a resin matrix in a permeable cartridge positioned in line with streamflow. A salt tracer dissolves in proportion to advective flow through the cartridge. Multiple deployments of different cartridge types were undertaken and the recovery of P and N compared with the flow-weighted mean concentration (FWMC) from high-resolution bank-side analysers at each site. Results from the passive samplers were variable and largely underestimated the FWMC derived from the bank-side analysers. Laboratory tests using ambient river samples indicated good replication of advective throughflow using pumped water, although this appeared not to be a good analogue of river conditions where flow divergence was possible. Laboratory tests also showed good nutrient retention but not elution and these issues appeared to combine to limit the utility in ambient river systems at the small catchment scale.

We present in this study the effect of nature and concentration of lithium salt, such as the lithium hexafluorophosphate, LiPF6; lithium tris(pentafluoroethane)-trifluorurophosphate LiFAP; lithium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, LiTFSI, on the CO2 solubility in four electrolytes for lithium ion batteries based on pure solvent that include ethylene carbonate (EC), dimethyl carbonate (DMC), ethyl methyl carbonate (EMC), diethyl carbonate (DEC), as well as, in the EC:DMC, EC:EMC and EC:DEC (50:50) wt.% binary mixtures as a function of temperature from (283 to 353) K and atmospheric pressure. Based on experimental solubility values, the Henry’s law constant of the carbon dioxide in these solutions with the presence or absence of lithium salt was then deduced and compared with reported values from the literature, as well as with those predicted by using COSMO-RS methodology within COSMOThermX software. From this study, it appears that the addition of 1 mol · dm-3 LiPF6 salt in alkylcarbonate solvents decreases their CO2 capture capacity. By using the same experimental conditions, an opposite CO2 solubility trend was generally observed in the case of the addition of LiFAP or LiTFSI salts in these solutions. Additionally, in all solutions investigated during this work, the CO2 solubility is greater in electrolytes containing the LiFAP salt, followed by those based on the LiTFSI case. The precision and accuracy of the experimental data reported therein, which are close to (1 and 15)%, respectively. From the variation of the Henry’s law constant with temperature, the partial molar thermodynamic functions of dissolution such as the standard Gibbs energy, the enthalpy, and the entropy, as well as the mixing enthalpy of the solvent with CO2 in its hypothetical liquid state were calculated. Finally, a quantitative analysis of the CO2 solubility evolution was carried out in the EC:DMC (50:50) wt.% binary mixture as the function of the LiPF6 or LiTFSI concentration in solution to elucidate how ionic species modify the CO2 solubility in alkylcarbonates-based Li-ion electrolytes by investigating the salting effects at T = 298.15 K and atmospheric pressure.

The phase diagram of water at negative pressures as obtained from computer simulations for two models of water, TIP4P/2005 and TIP5P is presented. Several solid structures with lower densities than ice Ih, so-called virtual ices, were considered as possible candidates to occupy the negative pressure region of the phase diagram of water. In particular the empty hydrate structures sI, sII, and sH and another, recently proposed, low-density ice structure. The relative stabilities of these structures at 0 K was determined using empirical water potentials and density functional theory calculations. By performing free energy calculations and Gibbs-Duhem integration the phase diagram of TIP4P/2005 was determined at negative pressures. The empty hydrates sII and sH appear to be the stable solid phases of water at negative pressures. The phase boundary between ice Ih and sII clathrate occurs at moderate negative pressures, while at large negative pressures sH becomes the most stable phase. This behavior is in reasonable agreement with what is observed in density functional theory calculations.

Study of nanomechanical response of iron carbides is important because presence of iron carbides greatly influences the performance and longevity of steel components. This work contributes to the literature by exploring nanoindentation of nanocrystalline Fe3C and tetrahedral-Fe4C using molecular dynamics simulation. The chemical interactions of iron and carbon were described through an analytical bond order inter-atomic potential (ABOP) energy function. The indentations were performed at an indentation speed of 50 m/sec and a repeat trial was performed at 5 m/sec. Load-displacement (P-h) curve for both these carbides showed residual indentation depth and maximum indentation depth (hf/hmax) ratio to be higher than 0.7 i.e. a circumstance where Oliver and Pharr method was not appropriate to be applied to evaluate the material properties. Alternate evaluation revealed Fe3C to be much harder than Fe4C. Gibbs free energy of formation and radial distribution function, coupled with state of the average local temperature and von Mises stresses indicate the formation of a new phase of iron-carbide. Formation of this newer phase was found to be due to deviatoric strain rather than the high temperature induced in the substrate during nanoindentation

The methane solubility in five pure electrolyte solvents and one binary solvent mixture for lithium ion batteries – such as ethylene carbonate (EC), propylene carbonate (PC), dimethyl carbonate (DMC), ethyl methyl carbonate (EMC), diethyl carbonate (DEC) and the (50:50 wt%) mixture of EC:DMC was studied experimentally at pressures close to atmospheric and as a function of temperature between (280 and 343) K by using an isochoric saturation technique. The effect of the selected anions of a lithium salt LiX (X = hexafluorophosphate,

<img height="16" border="0" style="vertical-align:bottom" width="27" alt="View the MathML source" title="View the MathML source" src="http://origin-ars.els-cdn.com/content/image/1-s2.0-S0021961414002146-si1.gif">PF6-; tris(pentafluoroethane)trifluorurophosphate, FAP; bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, TFSI) on the methane solubility in electrolytes for lithium ion batteries was then investigated using a model electrolyte based on the binary mixture of EC:DMC (50:50 wt%) + 1 mol · dm−3 of lithium salt in the same temperature and pressure ranges. Based on experimental solubility data, the Henry’s law constant of the methane in these solutions were then deduced and compared together and with those predicted by using COSMO-RS methodology within COSMOthermX software. From this study, it appears that the methane solubility in each pure solvent decreases with the temperature and increases in the following order: EC < PC < EC:EMC (50:50 wt%) < DMC < EMC < DEC, showing that this increases with the van der Walls force in solution. Additionally, in all investigated EC:DMC (50:50 wt%) + 1 mol · dm−3 of lithium salt electrolytes, the methane solubility decreases also with the temperature and the methane solubility is higher in the electrolyte containing the LiFAP salt, followed by that based on the LiTFSI one. From the variation of the Henry’s law constants with the temperature, the partial molar thermodynamic functions of solvation, such as the standard Gibbs free energy, the enthalpy, and the entropy where then calculated, as well as the mixing enthalpy of the solvent with methane in its hypothetical liquid state. Finally, the effect of the gas structure on their solubility in selected solutions was discussed by comparing methane solubility data reported in the present work with carbon dioxide solubility data available in the same solvents or mixtures to discern the more harmful gas generated during the degradation of the electrolyte, which limits the battery lifetime.

Levoglucosan is one important primary product during cellulose pyrolysis either as an intermediate or as a product. Three available mechanisms for levoglucosan formation have been studied theoretically in this paper, which are free-radical mechanism; glucose intermediate mechanism; and levoglucosan chain-end mechanism. All the elementary reactions included in the pathway of every mechanism were investigated; thermal properties including activation energy, Gibbs free energy, and enthalpy for every pathway were also calculated. It was concluded that free-radical mechanism has the highest energy barrier during the three levoglucosan formation mechanisms, glucose intermediate mechanism has lower energy barrier than free-radical mechanism, and levoglucosan chain-end mechanism is the most reasonable pathway because of the lowest energy barrier. By comparing with the activation energy obtained from the experimental results, it was also concluded that levoglucosan chain-end mechanism fits better with the experimental data for the formation of levoglucosan. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. The photoelectrochemistry of quinone radical anions has been demonstrated qualitatively by the photoassisted reduction of methyl viologen with benzoquinone and of neutral red with chloranil. Data were then collected for the estimation of quenching rate constants using Marcus-Weller theory. Reduction potentials of seven quinones were obtained in four solvents (and two aqueous mixtures) by cyclic voltammetry. The solvent effects on these potentials were studied by fitting them to the Taft relationship. The effects of proton donors were also noted. Absorption spectra of the radical anions were measured and the solvent effects noted and commented upon. From the molar absorption coefficients of the radical anions, the mean lifetimes of the excited states were estimated. Fluorescence spectra were obtained for anthraquinone and naphthaquinone radical anions and excitation energies were calculated. These values were estimated for the other quinones. Values of redox potentials for the excited radical anions were thence obtained. The Gibbs energies of the electron transfers between the excited quinone radical anions and the various substrates were obtained and hence the Gibbs energies of activation were calculated using the Marcus equation. The quenching rate constants were calculated using the Rehm-Weller equation and plotted vs. ΔG giving a characteristic Marcus plot including some data in the inverted region. The significance of the inverted region is discussed.

Purpose: Amorphous drug-polymer solid dispersions have been found to result in improved drug dissolution rates when compared to their crystalline counterparts. However, when the drug exists in the amorphous form it will possess a higher Gibb’s free energy than its associated crystalline state and can recrystallize. Drug-polymer phase diagrams constructed through the application of the Flory Huggins (F-H) theory contain a wealth of information regarding thermodynamic and kinetic stability of the amorphous drug-polymer system. This study was aimed to evaluate the effects of various experimental conditions on the solubility and miscibility detections of drug-polymer binary system. Methods: Felodipine (FD)-Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) K15 (PVPK15) and FD-Polyvinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate (PVP/VA64) were the selected systems for this research. Physical mixtures with different drug loadings were mixed and ball milled. These samples were then processed using Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and measurements of melting point (Tend) and glass transition (Tg) were detected using heating rates of 0.5, 1.0 and 5.0°C/min. Results: The melting point depression data was then used to calculate the F-H interaction parameter (χ) and extrapolated to lower temperatures to complete the liquid–solid transition curves. The theoretical binodal and spinodal curves were also constructed which were used to identify regions within the phase diagram. The effects of polymer selection, DSC heating rate, time above parent polymer Tg and polymer molecular weight were investigated by identifying amorphous drug miscibility limits at pharmaceutically relevant temperatures. Conclusion: The potential implications of these findings when applied to a non-ambient processing method such as Hot Melt Extrusion (HME) are also discussed.

Over recent years, ionic liquids have emerged as a class of novel fluids that have inspired the development of a number of new products and processes. The ability to design these materials with specific functionalities and properties means that they are highly relevant to the growing philosophy of chemical-product design. This is particularly appropriate in the context of a chemical industry that is becoming increasingly focussed on small-volume, high-value added products with relatively short times to market. To support such product and process development, a number of tools can be utilised. A key requirement is that the tool can predict the physical properties and activity coefficients of multi-component mixtures and, if required, model the process in which the materials will be used. Multi-scale simulations that span density functional theory (DFT) to process-engineering computations can address the relevant time and length scales and have increased in usage with the availability of cheap and powerful computers. Herein we will discuss the area of engineering calculations relating to the design of ionic liquid processes, that is, the computational tools that bridge this gap and allow for process simulation tools to utilise and assist in the design of ionic liquids. It will be shown that, at present, it is possible to use available tools to estimate many important properties of ionic liquids and mixtures containing them with a sufficient level of accuracy for preliminary design and selection.

BACKGROUND: Long-term hormone therapy has been the standard of care for advanced prostate cancer since the 1940s. STAMPEDE is a randomised controlled trial using a multiarm, multistage platform design. It recruits men with high-risk, locally advanced, metastatic or recurrent prostate cancer who are starting first-line long-term hormone therapy. We report primary survival results for three research comparisons testing the addition of zoledronic acid, docetaxel, or their combination to standard of care versus standard of care alone.

METHODS: Standard of care was hormone therapy for at least 2 years; radiotherapy was encouraged for men with N0M0 disease to November, 2011, then mandated; radiotherapy was optional for men with node-positive non-metastatic (N+M0) disease. Stratified randomisation (via minimisation) allocated men 2:1:1:1 to standard of care only (SOC-only; control), standard of care plus zoledronic acid (SOC + ZA), standard of care plus docetaxel (SOC + Doc), or standard of care with both zoledronic acid and docetaxel (SOC + ZA + Doc). Zoledronic acid (4 mg) was given for six 3-weekly cycles, then 4-weekly until 2 years, and docetaxel (75 mg/m(2)) for six 3-weekly cycles with prednisolone 10 mg daily. There was no blinding to treatment allocation. The primary outcome measure was overall survival. Pairwise comparisons of research versus control had 90% power at 2·5% one-sided α for hazard ratio (HR) 0·75, requiring roughly 400 control arm deaths. Statistical analyses were undertaken with standard log-rank-type methods for time-to-event data, with hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% CIs derived from adjusted Cox models. This trial is registered at ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT00268476) and ControlledTrials.com (ISRCTN78818544).

FINDINGS: 2962 men were randomly assigned to four groups between Oct 5, 2005, and March 31, 2013. Median age was 65 years (IQR 60-71). 1817 (61%) men had M+ disease, 448 (15%) had N+/X M0, and 697 (24%) had N0M0. 165 (6%) men were previously treated with local therapy, and median prostate-specific antigen was 65 ng/mL (IQR 23-184). Median follow-up was 43 months (IQR 30-60). There were 415 deaths in the control group (347 [84%] prostate cancer). Median overall survival was 71 months (IQR 32 to not reached) for SOC-only, not reached (32 to not reached) for SOC + ZA (HR 0·94, 95% CI 0·79-1·11; p=0·450), 81 months (41 to not reached) for SOC + Doc (0·78, 0·66-0·93; p=0·006), and 76 months (39 to not reached) for SOC + ZA + Doc (0·82, 0·69-0·97; p=0·022). There was no evidence of heterogeneity in treatment effect (for any of the treatments) across prespecified subsets. Grade 3-5 adverse events were reported for 399 (32%) patients receiving SOC, 197 (32%) receiving SOC + ZA, 288 (52%) receiving SOC + Doc, and 269 (52%) receiving SOC + ZA + Doc.

INTERPRETATION: Zoledronic acid showed no evidence of survival improvement and should not be part of standard of care for this population. Docetaxel chemotherapy, given at the time of long-term hormone therapy initiation, showed evidence of improved survival accompanied by an increase in adverse events. Docetaxel treatment should become part of standard of care for adequately fit men commencing long-term hormone therapy.
