A solid paraffin-based carbon paste electrode modified with 2-aminothiazole organofunctionalized silica (SiAt-SPCPE) was applied to Ni2+ determination in commercial ethanol fuel samples. The proposed method comprised four steps: (1) Ni2+ preconcentration at open circuit potential directly in the ethanol fuel sample, (2) transference of the electrode to an electrochemical cell containing DMG, (3) differential pulse voltammogram registering and (4) surface regeneration by polishing the electrode. The proposed method combines the high Ni2+ adsorption capacity presented by 2-aminothiazole organofunctionalized silica with the electrochemical properties of the Ni(DMG)2 complex, whose electrochemical reduction provides the analytical signal. All experimental parameters involved in the proposed method were optimized. Using a preconcentration time of 20 min, it was obtained a linear range from 7.5 x 10(-9) to 1.0 x 10(-6) mol L-1 with detection limit of 2.0 x 10(-9) mol L-1. Recovery values between 96.5 and 102.4% were obtained for commercial samples spiked with 1.0 mu mol L-1 Ni2+ and the developed electrode was totally stable in ethanolic solutions. The contents of Ni2+ found in the commercial samples using the proposed method were compared to those obtained by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectroscopy by using the F- and t-test. Neither the F- nor t-values exceeded the critical values at 95% confidence level, confirming that there are not statistical differences between the results obtained by both methods. These results indicate that the developed electrode can be successfully employed to reliable Ni2+ determination in commercial ethanol fuel samples without any sample pretreatment or dilution step. In this clinical study, we proposed to observe the efficacy of the treatment of squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue (SCCT) by carbon dioxide (CO2) laser surgery. Twelve patients with SCCT were treated with excisional surgery using the CO2 laser with a spot size of 0.8 mm, 10 W, power density of 2.5 W/cm(2) in continuous mode, and under constant vacuum removal of the plume. The post surgical clinical evaluations were done every day until the sutures were removed and then every 7 days up to 1 month postoperatively. Subjects were re-examined quarterly until the fifth year post surgery. After 5 yr of follow-up for all subjects, there was no recurrence of the SCCT at the involved sites. The functional and aesthetic results observed were excellent. It is concluded that CO2 laser ablation of SCCT is an extremely useful surgical technique that can provide a clean field and is capable of providing surgical results consistent with accepted principles of oncological surgery. Droplets formed at the tip of a tube under the same conditions possess extreme uniformity of form, volume and weight. These properties of liquid drop formation have been known for a long time and consequently many applications for the drop have been found in instrumentation and chemical analysis methods. In the present paper, we report on the analytical use of a dynamic LED-based flow-through optical absorption detector with optical path length controlled by continuous dropping of a solution. This arrangement consists of a flow cell built within a high-intensity red LED (lambda (max)=630 nm). The feasibility of the detector is demonstrated by colorimetric determination of methylene blue, and ammonium by Berthelot's reaction, in a flow-injection system. For ammonium, the reaction forms a blue dye (indophenol) with a maximum absorption at 630-650 nm. The detection limit, considered as 3 times the signal of the blank, is better than 125 mu g l(-1). The small flow cell represents a good combination of optical path length, low volume and fast washout. This detector can be used advantageously in automated methods and can represent a solution to problems of optical detection involving gas bubbles and precipitation of particles in turbidimetric applications.

An accurate switched-current (SI) memory cell and suitable for low-voltage low-power (LVLP) applications is proposed. Information is memorized as the gate-voltage of the input transistor, in a tunable gain-boosting triode-transconductor. Additionally, four-quadrant multiplication between the input voltage to the transconductor regulation-amplifier (X-operand) and the stored voltage (Y-operand) is provided. A simplified 2 x 2-memory array was prototyped according to a standard 0.8 mum n-well CMOS process and 1.8-V supply. Measured current-reproduction error is less than 0.26% for 0.25 muA less than or equal to I-SAMPLE less than or equal to 0.75 muA. Standby consumption is 6.75 muW per cell @I-SAMPLE = 0.75 muA. At room temperature, leakage-rate is 1.56 nA/ms. Four-quadrant multiplier (4QM) full-scale operands are 2x(max) = 320 mV(pp) and 2y(max). = 448 mV(pp), yielding a maximum output swing of 0.9 muA(pp). 4QM worst-case nonlinearity is 7.9%.

Methods developed since 1976 for harvesting, preparing and banding fish chromosomes are now commonly used for taxonomic and phylogenetic studies, genetic control and chromosome manipulations in fish breeding and in monitoring aquatic pollutants by examining chromosomal aberrations. These studies have chiefly concerned common temperate freshwater species; the same procedures, when applied to marine and coldwater fish, often provide unsatisfactory results, especially in cell culture. A concerted effort should be made in marine fish, and to develop molecular cytogenetic methods to provide a more powerful tool to study chromosomal evolution. © 1991 BRILL.

A CMOS memory-cell for dynamic storage of analog data and suitable for LVLP applications is proposed. Information is memorized as the gate-voltage of input-transistor of a gain-boosting triode-transconductor. The enhanced output-resistance improves accuracy on reading out the sampled currents. Additionally, a four-quadrant multiplication between the input to regulation-amplifier of the transconductor and the stored voltage is provided. Designing complies with a low-voltage 1.2μm N-well CMOS fabrication process. For a 1.3V-supply, CCELL=3.6pF and sampling interval is 0.25μA≤ ISAMPLE ≤ 0.75μA. The specified retention time is 1.28ms and corresponds to a charge-variation of 1% due to junction leakage @75°C. A range of MR simulations confirm circuit performance. Absolute read-out error is below O.40% while the four-quadrant multiplier nonlinearity, at full-scale is 8.2%. Maximum stand-by consumption is 3.6μW/cell.

Purpose: The purpose of this work was to study the bone tissue reaction after porous polyethylene (Polipore) implantation into surgical defects in the parietal bones of rats with streptozotocin-induced diabetes, treated with salmon calcitonin. Materials and Methods: Porous polyethylene implants were placed in bone defects created in 36 adult female rats. The rats were divided into 3 equal groups: diabetic treated with calcitonin (DCa), diabetic (D), and control (C). The animals of the DCa group received applications of salmon calcitonin on alternating days immediately after the surgery until sacrifice. The rats were sacrificed after 15, 30, 60, and 90 days, and the defects were examined histologically and statistically through histomorphometric analysis. Results: Histomorphometric analysis showed that there was no statistically significant difference in the mean quantity of inflammatory cells among all study groups after 15 and 90 days. At 30 days, a statistically significant difference was observed between the D and C groups and the D and DCa groups. At 60 days, there was no statistically significant difference between the D and DCa groups. Discussion: Porous polyethylene can be considered an option for implant material when there are investigations that prove its biocompatibility and stability in the host tissues. Salmon calcitonin positively aided the bone repair and attenuated the inflammatory response until 30 days after the surgery. Conclusion: Porous polyethylene was tolerated by the host tissues in all groups, and moderate chronic inflammatory reaction was observed up to the 90-day period. Salmon calcitonin attenuated the inflammatory response up until 30 days.

Tissue engineering has been defined as an interdisciplinary field that applies the principles of engineering and life sciences for the development of biological substitutes to restore, maintain or improve tissue function. This area is always looking for new classes of degradable biopolymers that are biocompatible and whose activities are controllable and specific, more likely to be used as cell scaffolds, or in vitro tissue reconstruction. In this paper, we developed a novel bionanocomposite with homogeneous porous distribution and prospective natural antimicrobial properties by electrospinning technique using Stryphodedron barbatimao extract (Barbatimão). SEM images showed equally distribution of nanofibres. DSC and TGA showed higher thermal properties and change crystallinity of the developed bionanocomposite mainly because these structural modification. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.

This paper presents a novel segmentation method for cuboidal cell nuclei in images of prostate tissue stained with hematoxylin and eosin. The proposed method allows segmenting normal, hyperplastic and cancerous prostate images in three steps: pre-processing, segmentation of cuboidal cell nuclei and post-processing. The pre-processing step consists of applying contrast stretching to the red (R) channel to highlight the contrast of cuboidal cell nuclei. The aim of the second step is to apply global thresholding based on minimum cross entropy to generate a binary image with candidate regions for cuboidal cell nuclei. In the post-processing step, false positives are removed using the connected component method. The proposed segmentation method was applied to an image bank with 105 samples and measures of sensitivity, specificity and accuracy were compared with those provided by other segmentation approaches available in the specialized literature. The results are promising and demonstrate that the proposed method allows the segmentation of cuboidal cell nuclei with a mean accuracy of 97%. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Background. Tooth bleaching has been widely studied, mainly due to the possible undesirable effects that can be caused by this esthetic procedure. The cytotoxicity of the bleaching agents and its components to pulp cells has been demonstrated in several researches. The aim of this study was to evaluate the toxic effects of successive applications of 10% carbamide peroxide (CP) gel on odontoblast-like cells. Materials and methods. Enamel-dentin discs obtained from bovine incisors were adapted to artificial pulp chambers (APCs). The groups were formed as follows: G1: Without treatment (control group); G2: 10% carbamide peroxide, CP (five applications/one per day); G3: 10% CP (one unique application); and G4: 35% hydrogen peroxide, HP (three applications of 15 min each). After treatment, cell metabolism (MTT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity and plasma membrane damage (flow cytometry) were analyzed. Results. Reductions in cell metabolism and alkaline phosphatase activity along with severe damage of the cytoplasmic membrane were noted in G2. In G3, no damage was observed, compared to the control group. Intermediary values of toxicity were obtained after 35% HP application. Conclusion. It can be concluded that one application of 10% CP did not cause toxic effects in odontoblast-like cells, but the successive application of this product promoted severe cytotoxic effects. The daily application of the bleaching agents, such as used in the at-home bleaching technique, can increase the damages caused by this treatment to the dental pulp cells. © 2013 Informa Healthcare.
