Psoriatic arthritis is a multisystem disorder which, from a measurement standpoint, demands consideration of its cutaneous manifestations and both axial and peripheral musculoskeletal involvement. Measurements of various aspects of impairment, ability/disability, and participation/ handicap are feasible using existing measurement techniques, which are for the most part valid, reliable, and responsive. Nevertheless, there remain opportunities for the further development of consensus around core set measures and responder criteria, as well as for instrument development and refinement, standardised assessor training, cross-cultural adaptation of health status questionnaires, electronic data capture, and the introduction of standardised quantitative measurement into routine clinical care.

Objective: To adapt the Family Wellbeing empowerment program, which was initially designed to support adults to take greater control and responsibility for their decisions and lives, to the needs of Indigenous school children living in remote communities. Method. At the request of two schools in remote Indigenous communities in far north Queensland, a pilot personal development and empowerment program based on the adult Family Wellbeing principles was developed, conducted and evaluated in the schools. The main aims of the program were to build personal identity and to encourage students to recognise their future potential and be more aware of their place in the community and wider society. Results: Participation in the program resulted in significant social and emotional growth for the students. Outcomes described by participating students and teachers included increased analytical and reflective skills, greater ability to think for oneself and set goals, less teasing and bullying in the school environment, and an enhanced sense of identity, friendship and,social relatedness'. Conclusion: This pilot implementation of the Family Wellbeing Program adapted for schools demonstrated the program's potential to enhance Indigenous young people's personal growth and development. Challenges remain in increasing parental/ family involvement and ensuring the program's sustainability and transferability. The team has been working with relevant stakeholders to further develop and package the School-based Family Wellbeing program for Education Queensland's New Basics curriculum framework.

This article is predicated on the idea that leaders shape workplace affective events. Based on Affective Events Theory (AET), I argue that leaders are sources of employee positive and negative emotions at work. Certain leader behaviors displayed during interactions with their employees are the sources of these affective events. The second theoretical underpinning of the article is the Asymmetry Effect of emotion. Consistent with this theory, employees are more likely to recall negative incidents than positive incidents. In a qualitative study, evidence that these processes exist in the workplace was found. Leader behaviors were sources of positive or negative emotional responses in employees; employees recalled more negative incidents than positive incidents, and they recalled them more intensely and in more detail than positive incidents. Consequently, leaders may need to exercise their emotional intelligence to generate emotional uplifts to overcome the hassles in the workplace that employees seem to remember so vividly. One of the normative tenets of the Habermasian public sphere is that it should be an open and universally accessible forum. In Australia, one way of achieving this is the provision for community broadcasting in the Broadcasting Services Act. A closer examination of community broadcasting, however, suggests practices that contradict the idea of an open and accessible public sphere. Community broadcasting organizations regulate access to their media assets through a combination of formal and informal structures. This suggests that the public sphere can be understood as a resource, and that community broadcasting organizations can be analysed as ‘commons regimes’. This approach reveals a fundamental paradox inherent in the public sphere: access, participation and the quality of discourse in the public sphere are connected to its enclosure, which limits membership and participation through a system of rules and norms that govern the conduct of a group. By accepting the view that a public sphere is governed by property rights, it follows that an open and universally accessible public sphere is neither possible nor desirable.

Objective: To present the clinical features and management outcome in a large series of patients with periocular and orbital amyloidosis. Design: Retrospective, noncomparative, interventional case series. Patients: All patients diagnosed with periocular and orbital amyloidosis in 6 oculoplastic and orbital units. Methods: Clinical records of all patients were reviewed. Main Outcome Measures: Clinical presentation, radiological and histological findings, treatment modalities, and outcome. Results. The study included 24 patients (15 female, 9 male) with a mean age of 57 17 years. Nineteen cases were unilateral, and 5 were bilateral. Clinical signs and symptoms included a visible or palpable periocular mass or tissue infiltration (95.8%), ptosis (54.2%), periocular discomfort or pain (25%), proptosis or globe displacement (21%), limitations in ocular motility (16.7%), recurrent periocular subcutaneous hemorrhages (12.5%), and diplopia (8.3%). Seven cases had orbital involvement, and 17 were periocular. Immunohistochemistry in 7 patients showed B cells or plasma cells producing monoclonal immunoglobulin chains that were deposited as amyloid light chains. Only 1 patient was diagnosed with systemic amyloid light chain amyloidosis. Treatment modalities were mainly observation and surgical debulking. During a mean follow-up period of 39 months, 21% showed significant progression after treatment, whereas 79% were stable or showed no recurrence after treatment. Conclusion: Periocular and orbital amyloidosis may present with a wide spectrum of clinical findings and result in significant ocular morbidity. Complete surgical excision is not feasible in many cases, and the goal of treatment is to preserve function and to prevent sight-threatening complications.

The present research examines employee identification and communication in organisations. In Study 1, 2229 soldiers from a military organisation completed measures of perceived status and strength of identification with their unit, employment category and their brigade. As predicted, the status of a key organisational group influenced reactions to different organisational groups: full-time soldiers evaluated their work unit and the organisation as being lower in status and identified less strongly with both of these groups than part-time soldiers. The second study extended these findings to a different research context: a large psychiatric hospital undergoing downsizing and restructuring. Surprisingly, there were no differences in survivors' and victims' levels of identification with organisational groups. Instead, and consistent with Study 1, there was evidence to suggest that employees adjusted their patterns of identification and perceptions of group status through a compensatory mechanism that maximised opportunities for selfenhancement and positive distinctiveness. In the third study, employees from a public hospital (N = 142) rated communication from double ingroup members (same work unit/same occupational group) more favourably than communication from partial group members (same work unit/different occupational group). These results are considered in terms of their practical implications for identity management in organisations.

O conflito trabalho-família é um fenômeno freqüente nas sociedades atuais em que homens e mulheres dividem responsabilidades familiares e profissionais. A sua direção pode ser unidirecional ou bidirecional, ou seja, da família para o trabalho, do trabalho para a família ou simultaneamente de uma esfera para outra, afetando sensivelmente as relações familiares e as relações nas organizações, sendo possível afetar diretamente o bem-estar dos indivíduos. Este é um estudo de natureza quantitativa e com desenho transversal. O critério para a escolha de participantes foi o de conveniência. O objetivo geral desta pesquisa foi analisar as relações entre conflito trabalho-família (CTF), bem-estar subjetivo (BES) e bem-estar no trabalho (BET). O estudo contou com a participação de 174 trabalhadores em uma amostra diversificada de profissionais do segmento privado, público e de ONG, sendo 52,9% do sexo feminino, com idade média de 38,29 anos (DP=11,22). Para a obtenção dos dados optou-se por um questionário abrangendo as três variáveis do estudo contendo duas escalas para aferir as dimensões de BES, uma escala para aferir BET e uma escala para aferir CTF/CFT. Para a análise dos dados foi usado o SPSS, versão 20. Foram calculadas frequências, percentuais, médias, desvios-padrão, e índices de correlação, bem como índices de precisão das medidas usadas (Alpha de Cronbach). Os resultados apontaram para uma maior interferência do trabalho na família do que da família no trabalho. Essa interferência foi significativa tanto para o bem-estar no trabalho, quanto para o bem-estar subjetivo, alterando o envolvimento com o trabalho e gerando sentimentos de infelicidade, desânimo e angústia em relação as suas realizações pessoais, e ao futuro. Quanto maior o conflito trabalho-família, menor é o bem-estar no trabalho e menor é o bem-estar subjetivo desses participantes.

Atualmente, características organizacionais vêm sendo estudadas sob um prisma diferenciado. Hoje, são pesquisados com maior ênfase os aspectos positivos que possam prover a possibilidade dos trabalhadores nutrirem sentimentos positivos para com suas organizações empregadoras e ao seu trabalho propriamente dito. Os desafios impostos atualmente giram em torno de se buscar identificar características organizacionais positivas que permitam o florescimento do trabalhador. Tais características são postuladas como benéficas tanto às organizações, por resultar em maior produtividade e lucratividade, assim como para promover o bem-estar dos trabalhadores. O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar os impactos que as dimensões da organização positiva exercem sobre o bem-estar dos trabalhadores. O bem-estar dos trabalhadores foi dividido em duas áreas, bem-estar subjetivo (composto por satisfação geral com a vida, afetos positivos e afetos negativos) e bem-estar no trabalho, composto por três dimensões: satisfação no trabalho, envolvimento com o trabalho e comprometimento organizacional afetivo. Organização positiva foi concebida como um construto composto por três dimensões: percepção de suporte organizacional, percepções de justiça organizacional (distributiva e de procedimentos) e confiança do empregado na organização. A amostra foi composta por 200 trabalhadores de diversas empresas do Estado de São Paulo, sendo 55 do sexo masculino e 145 do sexo feminino, solteiros e casados com escolaridade distribuída desde o ensino fundamental completo até pósgraduação completa. O instrumento de coleta de dados foi um questionário auto-aplicável composto por nove escalas que mediram as variáveis do estudo. Os resultados deste trabalho revelaram que bem-estar subjetivo e bem-estar no trabalho guardam relações entre si. Análises de regressão múltipla informaram que as dimensões da organização positiva tiveram impactos maiores sobre bem-estar no trabalho do que bem-estar subjetivo, destacando-se a capacidade de confiança do empregado na organização de prover explicações para o bem-estar de trabalhadores, seja nos domínios da vida pessoal ou no contexto de trabalho. Conforme tais resultados, confiança do empregado na organização, percepções de justiça e de suporte organizacional poderiam ser apontadas como importantes dimensões da organização positiva para promover e proteger o bem-estar dos trabalhadores. Futuros estudos deveriam incluir outras características organizacionais positivas para aumentar a explicação da variância do bem-estar dos trabalhadores

A complexidade crescente no ambiente de trabalho tem exigido capacidade de adaptação dos empregados, com papéis exigindo maior flexibilidade e criatividade para superar os desafios que se apresentam. Ciclos de vida de produtos cada vez menores num mercado muito agressivo têm acarretado enormes pressões nos empregados, com efeitos colaterais na saúde, como estresse e doenças psicossomáticas. O tratamento de doenças, embora relevante para minimizar o sofrimento humano, não tem sido suficiente para dar respostas desejadas neste ambiente de trabalho numa concepção de saúde que abranja o bem-estar e que permita aos empregados enfrentar melhor os desafios que se apresentam. O campo da psicologia positiva, voltada ao estudo dos fatores que propiciam o florescimento das pessoas, permite às organizações, gestores e empregados ampliar o leque de alternativas possíveis para melhorar a saúde das pessoas, com reflexos positivos para as organizações. O objetivo deste estudo visou a confirmar se os valores organizacionais, percepção de suporte organizacional e percepções de justiça (distributiva e de procedimentos) são antecedentes de bem-estar no trabalho, um construto composto das variáveis de satisfação no trabalho, envolvimento com o trabalho, e comprometimento organizacional afetivo. A amostra envolveu 404 trabalhadores atuando em empresas na região da Grande São Paulo, sendo 209 do sexo masculino e 193 do sexo feminino. Dividiu-se a amostra a partir de dois agrupamentos de empresas, o setor financeiro (compreendendo uma empresa com 243 respondentes) e o setor não financeiro (compreendendo 13 empresas com um total de 161 respondentes). Como instrumento para coleta de dados utilizou-se de um questionário composto de sete escalas, abrangendo as três variáveis de bem-estar no trabalho e as quatro variáveis independentes estudadas como seus antecedentes. Os resultados deste estudo, nos dois setores estudados, confirmaram que a percepção de suporte organizacional e a percepção de justiça distributiva acarretam maior satisfação no trabalho. A justiça de procedimentos também mostrou capacidade preditiva de satisfação no trabalho para o setor financeiro. O valor organizacional autonomia confirmou-se como antecedente de envolvimento com o trabalho nos dois setores. O valor organizacional realização e a percepção de justiça de procedimentos posicionaram-se como antecedentes de comprometimento organizacional afetivo para os setores não financeiro e financeiro, respectivamente. O valor organizacional preocupação com a coletividade e a percepção de suporte organizacional mostraram capacidade preditiva de comprometimento organizacional afetivo para os setores financeiro e não financeiro, respectivamente. Os resultados revelam que se promove o bem-estar no trabalho quando, nas organizações, se adotam políticas e práticas que dêem suporte e tratamento digno aos empregados, reforçando valores organizacionais que promovam um ambiente propício à inovação e à criatividade, com maior autonomia, onde os gestores valorizam a competência e o sucesso dos trabalhadores, e onde se predomina a honestidade e a sinceridade nas relações entre as pessoas e a organização. Os empregados tenderão a desenvolver transações típicas das trocas sociais, investindo seus esforços para a organização, com base na confiança e na lealdade.

This article investigates the relationship between simultaneity in decisions regarding business strategies and human resource management (HRM) policies and their impact on organizational performance. The research is based on a sample of 178 organizations operating in the Greek manufacturing sector. The results of this study support the hypothesis that when business strategies and HRM policies are developed simultaneously, they positively affect organizational performance. This is more valid for decisions taken simultaneously with respect to quality and employee development, innovation and employee rewards and relations, and cost and employee resourcing. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

This study compares human resource management (HRM) practices in Indian public- and private-sector organizations. The investigation is based on a questionnaire survey of 137 large manufacturing firms (public sector = 81: private sector = 56). The key areas of analysis include the structure of human resource (HR) department, the role of HR function in corporate change, recruitment and selection, pay and benefits, training and development, employee relations and emphasis on key HRM strategies. Internal labour markets (ILMs) are used to make the comparative analysis. The statistical results show a number of similarities and differences in the HRM systems of Indian public-and private-sector organizations. Against the established notion, the results of this study reveal that the gap between Indian private- and public-sector HRM practices is not very significant. Moreover, in a few HR functional areas (for example, compensation and training and development), Indian private-sector firms have adopted a more rational approach than their public-sector counterparts. © 2004 Taylor and Francis Ltd.

This paper is concerned with the effects that leadership styles (i.e., transactional and transformational) can have upon the level of front-line employees’ service delivery quality. Previous literature has mostly looked at leadership and its effects upon subordinates within a sales, psychology, or human resources context. However, due to the idiosyncrasies inherent in services (i.e., intangibility, heterogeneity, perishability, and inseparability), it is likely that, in such a context, different leadership styles will effect performance outcomes. Consequently, this paper seeks to expand the services marketing literature by developing a conceptual framework of leadership style effects adapted to the field of services marketing. Of particular importance are the effects that leadership styles have upon front-line employee “motivators” and service-related job outcomes. Specific hypotheses are developed and future research directions are also presented for consideration.

In pursuing their particular strategic goals, organisations place differential emphasis in their activities on employees and customers. Those who focus predominantly on employees see them as key resources contributing to successful achievement of goals, while those who focus on customers believe that customer commitment is the prime source of financial prosperity and competitive advantage. In all firms, there is potential for conflict and subsequent trade-offs in the emphasis placed on employee resources and customers. This paper investigates the implications of these potential trade-offs on firms' boundary-spanning capabilities (those capabilities that enable firms to interact effectively with their customers, their suppliers, their strategic allies and others in their business networks) in European and Australasian markets. The results suggest that those companies which achieve a strong but balanced focus on both employees and customers have heightened boundary-spanning capabilities. The comparison between UK and Australian businesses indicates that the balance is more highly developed in Australasian than European (UK) markets. © 2004 by The Haworth Press, Inc. This paper explains how strategic planning is able to deliver strategic integration within organizations. While communication and participation within planning processes are perceived to have an integrative effect, we argue that these effects are unlikely to arise simply from bringing people together. Rather, we suggest that, given the varying interests of actors in different business units, integration will only arise from active negotiations and compromises between these actors. The paper is based upon a case of strategic planning in a multinational that was attempting to develop greater strategic integration across Europe. Drawing upon an activity theory framework, we examine how a common strategy emerges over time through modifications to the planning process and to different actors’ roles within it. The findings are used to develop a process model that shows how different business unit characteristics of planning experience and relative power shape different experiences of communication and participation activities and different processes for achieving integration. The paper concludes with a discussion of how this process model contributes to the literature on strategic planning, political processes of strategy-making, and strategy-as-practice.

In this paper we examine the relation between ownership structure and operating performance for European maritime firms. Using a sample of 266 firm-year observations, during the period 2002–2004, we provide evidence that operating performance is positively related with foreign held shares and investment corporation held shares, indicating better investor protection from managerial opportunism. We also find no relation between operating performance and employee held shares, suggesting no relation between employee commitment and firms’ economic performance. Furthermore, we find no relation between operating performance and government held shares, indicating that government may not adequately protect shareholders’ interests from managerial opportunism. Finally, we do find a positive relation between operating performance and portfolio held shares for code law maritime firms but not for common law maritime firms. Results are robust after adjusting for various firm and country risk characteristics. Overall, our results on the importance of the ownership structure are new to this setting and add to a large body of evidence linking ownership characteristics to corporate performance.
