Shape conversions of silver nanoplates were realized by heating and subsequent light irradiation. The initial silver nanoprisms were transformed into silver nanodisks gradually in the process of heating, which was possibly achieved through dissolving and readsorption of silver atoms on the surface of silver nanoplates. Subsequently, under light irradiation, the heating induced silver nanodisks were reversed to silver nanoprisms in the same solution. The dissolved oxygen was found to play a pivotal role in the shape conversion from nanoprism to nanodisk. In addition to heating, deionized water could induce the shape conversion of silver nanoplates when it was added to precipitate of the initial silver nanoprisms after centrifugation. Citrate in solution is essential to the photoinduced shape conversion process. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and extinction spectroscopy results demonstrated that localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) properties of silver nanoplates were effectively tuned through shape conversion.

An electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) study of the microstructure of TRIP steel during fatigue failure. Phase and crystal orientation study of a TRIP steel subjected to cyclic load induced fatigue. The relative fractions of austenite, ferrite and martensite are quantified within the strain field of a fatigue crack tip. This data is a subset of data supporting a wider study of the fatigue properties of multiphase steels used in the automotive industry. The different microstructural phases present in these steels can influence the strain life and cyclic stabilized strength of the material due to the way in which these phases accommodate the applied cyclic strain. Fully reversed strain-controlled low-cycle fatigue tests have been used to determine the mechanical fatigue performance of a dual-phase (DP) 590 and transformation induced plasticity (TRIP) 780 steel, with transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM-EBSD) used to examine the deformed microstructures .

We report on the characterization of grain boundary (GB) segregation in an Fe-28Mn-0.3C (wt.%) twinning-induced plasticity (TWIP) steel. After recrystallization of this steel for 24 h at 700 °C, ∼50% general grain boundaries (GBs) and ∼35% Σ3 annealing twin boundaries were observed (others were high-order Σ and low-angle GBs). The segregation of B, C and P and traces of Si and Cu were detected at the general GB by atom probe tomography (APT) and quantified using ladder diagrams. In the case of the Σ3 coherent annealing twin, it was necessary to first locate the position of the boundary by density analysis of the atom probe data, then small amounts of B, Si and P segregation and, surprisingly, depletion of C were detected. The concentration of Mn was constant across the interface for both boundary types. The depletion of C at the annealing twin is explained by a local change in the stacking sequence at the boundary, creating a local hexagonal close-packed structure with low C solubility. This finding raises the question of whether segregation/depletion also occurs at Σ3 deformation twin boundaries in high-Mn TWIP steels. Consequently, a previously published APT dataset of the Fe-22Mn-0.6C alloy system, containing a high density of deformation twins due to 30% tensile deformation at room temperature, was reinvestigated using the same analysis routine as for the annealing twin. Although crystallographically identical to the annealing twin, no evidence of segregation or depletion was found at the deformation twins, owing to the lack of mobility of solutes during twin formation at room temperature.

A range of norbornane based amphiphiles, which possess a rigid 'kink' in the centre of amphiphiles, were accessed via a concise four step synthesis. The self-assembly properties of these novel compounds were then investigated and the critical aggregation concentration (CAC), hydrodynamic diameter (DH) by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and their morphology by cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryoTEM) and negatively stained transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were determined. These compounds while possessing similar CAC values (50-70 μM) exhibited a wide variety of particle size (60-140 nm) and morphologies, including vesicles, cigar-shaped aggregates and rod-like micelles. Considering the similarities in molecular structure we have proposed that the unique nature of the molecular 'kink' is affecting molecular assembly in which subtle changes in molecular structure have large ramifications on aggregate size and morphology.

Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) nanocomposites were prepared by melt-mixing. The dispersion of clay platelets and rheology of nanocomposites were analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and rheometric mechanical spectrometer (RMS). The transformation of α to β and γ phase in PVDF was induced by the addition of nanoclay and subsequently the isothermal crystallization kinetics of neat PVDF and its nanocomposite have been investigated. The interaction between clay nanofillers and PVDF macromolecular chains induced the change of conformation from trans-gauche to all-trans crystal structure in PVDF segment. The isothermal crystallization of PVDF/clay nanocomposites was carried out by Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) technique. The influence of clay platelets on nucleation crystallization rate and Avrami exponent were studied. PVDF/clay nanocomposite showed higher crystallization rate indicating that nanoclay has acted as an effective nucleation agent. This nucleation effect of nanoclay increased the Avrami exponent and decreased the degree of crystallinity. © 2014 World Scientific Publishing Company.

High entropy alloys (HEA) are a relatively new metal alloy system that have promising potential in high temperature applications. These multi-component alloys are typically produced by arc-melting, requiring several remelts to achieve chemical homogeneity. Direct laser fabrication (DLF) is a rapid prototyping technique, which produces complex components from alloy powder by selectively melting micron-sized powder in successive layers. However, studies of the fabrication of complex alloys from simple elemental powder blends are sparse. In this study, DLF was employed to fabricate bulk samples of three alloys based on the AlxCoCrFeNi HEA system, where x was 0.3, 0.6 and 0.85M fraction of Al. This produced FCC, FCC/BCC and BCC crystal structures, respectively. Corresponding alloys were also produced by arc-melting, and all microstructures were characterised and compared longitudinal and transverse to the build/solidification direction by x-ray diffraction, glow discharge optical emission spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (EDX and EBSD). Strong similarities were observed between the single phase FCC and BCC alloys produced by both techniques, however the FCC/BCC structures differed significantly. This has been attributed to a difference in the solidification rate and thermal gradient in the melt pool between the two different techniques. Room temperature compression testing showed very similar mechanical behaviour and properties for the two different processing routes. DLF was concluded to be a successful technique to manufacture bulk HEA[U+05F3]s.

In this work, silica embedded with a spirooxazine dye was prepared by hydrolysis of silanes that bear a nonhydrolyzable group of different structures through a sol-gel route in the presence of a spirooxazine dye, and the pore dimension and photochromic properties of photochromic silica coatings on fabric were studied. The pore dimension in the silica was examined by small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and nitrogen adsorption porosimetry. The SAXS results revealed that the distance between pores was in the range between 0.8 nm and 1.9 nm and it increased with increasing the size of the non-hydrolyzable group. Pore size measured by nitrogen adsorption porosimetry was in the range of 2.1-2.7 nm. The photochromic optical absorption was influenced mainly by the hydrophobicity of the non-hydrolyzable groups, while the color changing rates were influenced by the steric effect of the non-hydrolyzable groups and their interaction with the dye.

Semiconducting GaN and Gax In1-x N nanoparticles (4-10 nm in diameter, depending on the metal ratio) with tunable indium content are prepared through a chemical synthesis (the urea-glass route). The bandgap of the ternary system depends on its composition, and therefore, the color of the final material can be turned from bright yellow (the color of pure GaN) to blue (the color of pure InN). Transmission electron microscopy (TEM and HRTEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images confirm the nanoparticle character and homogeneity of the as-prepared samples. X-ray diffraction (XRD), electron diffraction (EDX), elemental mapping, and UV/Vis, IR, and Raman spectroscopy investigations are used to confirm the incorporation of indium into the crystal structure of GaN. These nanoparticles, possessing adjusted optical properties, are expected to have potential applications in the fabrication of novel optoelectronic devices.

Ropivacaine (RVC) is an enantiomerically pure local anesthetic (LA) largely used in surgical procedures, which presents physico-chemical and therapeutic properties similar to those of bupivacaine (BPV), but associated to less systemic toxicity This study focuses on the development and pharmacological evaluation of a RVC in 2-hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin (HP-P-CD) inclusion complex. Phase-solubility diagrams allowed the determination of the association constant between RVC and HP-beta-CD (9.46 M-1) and showed an increase on RVC solubility upon complexation. Release kinetics revealed a decrease on RVC release rate and reduced hemolytic effects after complexation. (onset at 3.7 mM and 11.2 mM for RVC and RVCHP-beta-CD, respectively) were observed. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray analysis (X-ray) showed the formation and the morphology of the complex. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and job-plot experiments afforded data regarding inclusion complex stoichiometry (1:1) and topology. Sciatic nerve blockade studies showed that RVCHP-beta-CD was able to reduce the latency without increasing the duration of motor blockade, but prolonging the duration and intensity of the sensory blockade (p < 0.001) induced by the LA in mice. These results identify the RVCHP-beta-CD complex as an effective novel approach to enhance the pharmacological effects of RVC, presenting it as a promising new anesthetic formulation. LiCoO2 powders were prepared by combustion synthesis, using metallic nitrates as the oxidant and metal sources and urea as fuel. A small amount of the LiCoO2 phase was obtained directly from the combustion reaction, however, a heat treatment was necessary for the phase crystallization. The heat treatment was performed at the temperature range from 400 up to 700 degreesC for 12 h. The powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and specific surface area values were obtained by BET isotherms. Composite electrodes were prepared using a mixture of LiCoO2, carbon black and poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) in the 85:10:5% w/w ratio. The electrochemical behavior of these composites was evaluated in ethylene carbonate/dimethylcarbonate solution, using lithium perchlorate as supporting electrolyte. Cyclic voltammograms showed one reversible redox process at 4.0/3.85 V and one irreversible redox process at 3.3 V for the LiCoO2 obtained after a post-heat treatment at 400 and 500 degreesC.Raman spectroscopy showed the possible presence of LiCoO2 with cubic structure for the material obtained at 400 and 500 degreesC. This result is in agreement with X-ray data with structural refinement for the LiCoO2 powders obtained at different temperatures using the Rietveld method. Data from this method showed the coexistence of cubic LiCoO2 (spinel) and rhombohedral (layered) structures when LiCoO2 was obtained at lower temperatures (400 and 500 degreesC). The single rhombohedral structure for LiCoO2 was obtained after post-heat treatment at 600 degreesC. The maximum energy capacity in the first discharge was 136 mA g(-1) for the composite electrode based on LiCoO2 obtained after heat treatment at 700 degreesC. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V.
