Ion traps have been established as a powerful tool for ion cooling and laser spectroscopy experiments since a long time ago. SpecTrap, one of the precision experiments associated to the HITRAP facility at GSI, is implementing a Penning trap for studies of large bunches of externally produced highly charged ions. The extremely strong electric and magnetic fields that exist around the nuclei of heavy elements drastically change their electronic properties, such as energy level spacings and radiative lifetimes. The electrons can therefore serve as sensitive probes for nuclear properties such as size, magnetic moment and spatial distribution of charge and magnetization. The energies of forbidden fine and hyperfine structure transitions in such ions strongly depend on the nuclear charge and shift from the microwave domain into the optical domain. Thus, they become accessible for laser spectroscopy and its potentially high accuracy. A number of such measurements has been performed in storage rings and electron beam ion traps and yielded results with relative accuracies in the 10

Although the Standard Model of particle physics (SM) provides an extremely successful description of the ordinary matter, one knows from astronomical observations that it accounts only for around 5% of the total energy density of the Universe, whereas around 30% are contributed by the dark matter. Motivated by anomalies in cosmic ray observations and by attempts to solve questions of the SM like the (g-2)_mu discrepancy, proposed U(1) extensions of the SM gauge group have raised attention in recent years. In the considered U(1) extensions a new, light messenger particle, the hidden photon, couples to the hidden sector as well as to the electromagnetic current of the SM by kinetic mixing. This allows for a search for this particle in laboratory experiments exploring the electromagnetic interaction. Various experimental programs have been started to search for hidden photons, such as in electron-scattering experiments, which are a versatile tool to explore various physics phenomena. One approach is the dedicated search in fixed-target experiments at modest energies as performed at MAMI or at JLAB. In these experiments the scattering of an electron beam off a hadronic target e+(A,Z)->e+(A,Z)+l^+l^- is investigated and a search for a very narrow resonance in the invariant mass distribution of the lepton pair is performed. This requires an accurate understanding of the theoretical basis of the underlying processes. For this purpose it is demonstrated in the first part of this work, in which way the hidden photon can be motivated from existing puzzles encountered at the precision frontier of the SM. The main part of this thesis deals with the analysis of the theoretical framework for electron scattering fixed-target experiments searching for hidden photons. As a first step, the cross section for the bremsstrahlung emission of hidden photons in such experiments is studied. Based on these results, the applicability of the Weizsäcker-Williams approximation to calculate the signal cross section of the process, which is widely used to design such experimental setups, is investigated. In a next step, the reaction e+(A,Z)->e+(A,Z)+l^+l^- is analyzed as signal and background process in order to describe existing data obtained by the A1 experiment at MAMI with the aim to give accurate predictions of exclusion limits for the hidden photon parameter space. Finally, the derived methods are used to find predictions for future experiments, e.g., at MESA or at JLAB, allowing for a comprehensive study of the discovery potential of the complementary experiments. In the last part, a feasibility study for probing the hidden photon model by rare kaon decays is performed. For this purpose, invisible as well as visible decays of the hidden photon are considered within different classes of models. This allows one to find bounds for the parameter space from existing data and to estimate the reach of future experiments.

The excitation spectrum is one of the fundamental properties of every spatially extended system. The excitations of the building blocks of normal matter, i.e., protons and neutrons (nucleons), play an important role in our understanding of the low energy regime of the strong interaction. Due to the large coupling, perturbative solutions of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) are not appropriate to calculate long-range phenomena of hadrons. For many years, constituent quark models were used to understand the excitation spectra. Recently, calculations in lattice QCD make first connections between excited nucleons and the fundamental field quanta (quarks and gluons). Due to their short lifetime and large decay width, excited nucleons appear as resonances in scattering processes like pion nucleon scattering or meson photoproduction. In order to disentangle individual resonances with definite spin and parity in experimental data, partial wave analyses are necessary. Unique solutions in these analyses can only be expected if sufficient empirical information about spin degrees of freedom is available. The measurement of spin observables in pion photoproduction is the focus of this thesis. The polarized electron beam of the Mainz Microtron (MAMI) was used to produce high-intensity, polarized photon beams with tagged energies up to 1.47 GeV. A "frozen-spin" Butanol target in combination with an almost 4π detector setup consisting of the Crystal Ball and the TAPS calorimeters allowed the precise determination of the helicity dependence of the γp → π0p reaction. In this thesis, as an improvement of the target setup, an internal polarizing solenoid has been constructed and tested. A magnetic field of 2.32 T and homogeneity of 1.22×10−3 in the target volume have been achieved. The helicity asymmetry E, i.e., the difference of events with total helicity 1/2 and 3/2 divided by the sum, was determined from data taken in the years 2013-14. The subtraction of background events arising from nucleons bound in Carbon and Oxygen was an important part of the analysis. The results for the asymmetry E are compared to existing data and predictions from various models. The results show a reasonable agreement to the models in the energy region of the ∆(1232)-resonance but large discrepancies are observed for energy above 600 MeV. The expansion of the present data in terms of Legendre polynomials, shows the sensitivity of the data to partial wave amplitudes up to F-waves. Additionally, a first, preliminary multipole analysis of the present data together with other results from the Crystal Ball experiment has been as been performed.

A silicon-based microcell was fabricated with the potential for use in in-situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) of materials under plasma processing. The microcell consisted of 50 nm-thick film of silicon nitride observation window with 60μm distance between two electrodes. E-beam scattering Mont Carlo simulation showed that the silicon nitride thin film would have very low scattering effect on TEM primary electron beam accelerated at 200 keV. Only 4.7% of primary electrons were scattered by silicon nitride thin film and the Ar gas (60 μm thick at 1 atm pressure) filling the space between silicon nitride films. Theoretical calculation also showed low absorption of high-energy e-beam electrons. Because the plasma cell needs to survive the high vacuum TEM chamber while holding 1 atm internal pressure, a finite element analysis was performed to find the maximum stress the low-stress silicon nitride thin film experienced under pressure. Considering the maximum burst stress of low-stress silicon nitride thin film, the simulation results showed that the 50 nm silicon nitride thin film can be used in TEM under 1 atm pressure as the observation window. Ex-situ plasma generation experiment demonstrated that air plasma can be ignited at DC voltage of 570. A Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis showed that etching and deposition occurred during the plasma process and larger dendrites formed on the positive electrode.

The effects of electron beam irradiation, anaerobic packaging, and storage times on the aroma of raw ground beef patties were investigated. Patties were coarse ground at three days postmortem, and then fine ground and packaged at three, six, and nine days postmortem. Patties were irradiated immediately after packaging, or three days after packaging at 2 kGy, and then stored at 2.5 °C ñ1.5 °C for four days. Non-irradiated controls were held under similar conditions. After four days of storage for each postmortem time (three, six, and nine days), sensory aroma evaluations were performed on all samples. Irradiated and non-irradiated patties with the shortest postmortem storage times had the most desirable aroma scores. Controls had significantly (p £ .05) more desirable aroma scores than irradiated patties.

PURPOSE A beamlet based direct aperture optimization (DAO) for modulated electron radiotherapy (MERT) using photon multileaf collimator (pMLC) shaped electron fields is developed and investigated. METHODS The Swiss Monte Carlo Plan (SMCP) allows the calculation of dose distributions for pMLC shaped electron beams. SMCP is interfaced with the Eclipse TPS (Varian Medical Systems, Palo Alto, CA) which can thus be included into the inverse treatment planning process for MERT. This process starts with the import of a CT-scan into Eclipse, the contouring of the target and the organs at risk (OARs), and the choice of the initial electron beam directions. For each electron beam, the number of apertures, their energy, and initial shape are defined. Furthermore, the DAO requires dose-volume constraints for the structures contoured. In order to carry out the DAO efficiently, the initial electron beams are divided into a grid of beamlets. For each of those, the dose distribution is precalculated using a modified electron beam model, resulting in a dose list for each beamlet and energy. Then the DAO is carried out, leading to a set of optimal apertures and corresponding weights. These optimal apertures are now converted into pMLC shaped segments and the dose calculation for each segment is performed. For these dose distributions, a weight optimization process is launched in order to minimize the differences between the dose distribution using the optimal apertures and the pMLC segments. Finally, a deliverable dose distribution for the MERT plan is obtained and loaded back into Eclipse for evaluation. For an idealized water phantom geometry, a MERT treatment plan is created and compared to the plan obtained using a previously developed forward planning strategy. Further, MERT treatment plans for three clinical situations (breast, chest wall, and parotid metastasis of a squamous cell skin carcinoma) are created using the developed inverse planning strategy. The MERT plans are compared to clinical standard treatment plans using photon beams and the differences between the optimal and the deliverable dose distributions are determined. RESULTS For the idealized water phantom geometry, the inversely optimized MERT plan is able to obtain the same PTV coverage, but with an improved OAR sparing compared to the forwardly optimized plan. Regarding the right-sided breast case, the MERT plan is able to reduce the lung volume receiving more than 30% of the prescribed dose and the mean lung dose compared to the standard plan. However, the standard plan leads to a better homogeneity within the CTV. The results for the left-sided thorax wall are similar but also the dose to the heart is reduced comparing MERT to the standard treatment plan. For the parotid case, MERT leads to lower doses for almost all OARs but to a less homogeneous dose distribution for the PTV when compared to a standard plan. For all cases, the weight optimization successfully minimized the differences between the optimal and the deliverable dose distribution. CONCLUSIONS A beamlet based DAO using multiple beam angles is implemented and successfully tested for an idealized water phantom geometry and clinical situations.

Many ash-rich layers, varying from a few millimeters to several centimeters thick, were identified in the sedimentary sequences penetrated during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 125 at Sites 782, 784, and 786, located about 400 to 500 km south of Tokyo in the Bonin forearc. The total age range of the ash layers is from Eocene to Pleistocene, although not all sites cover this full span. The ashes consist of vitric, microlite-bearing, and crystal-rich components; the glassy shards are typically highly vesicular, with elongate, flattened bubbles. The dominant crystalline phases are orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene, and plagioclase. The major-element compositions of individual vitric shards collected from selected layers of Holes 782A, 784A, and 786A were determined by electron microprobe analyses; particular care was taken to ensure that the analytical results were not compromised by electron beam damage to the glasses. Compositions range from basalt through andesite and dacite to rhyolite and generally belong to a tholeiitic, low-K suite. There is no indication of any regular secular change during the evolution of the Bonin arc from tholeiitic through calc-alkalic to alkali compositions with time. In Holes 782A and 784A, some high-K rhyolite compositions of late Miocene and Pleistocene age are present. A clear chemical distinction has existed since arc inception between the source(s) of these ashes and the upper mantle source(s) tapped during construction of the igneous basement that formed the forearc.

This work describes the electron-beam (e-beam) lithography process developed to manufacture nano interdigital transducers (IDTs) to be used in high frequency (GHz) surface acoustic wave (SAW) applications. The combination of electron-beam (e-beam) lithography and lift-off process is shown to be effective in fabricating well-defined IDT finger patterns with a line width below 100 nm with a good yield. Working with insulating piezoelectric substrates brings about e-beam deflection. It is also shown how a very thin organic anti-static layer works well in avoiding this charge accumulation during e-beam lithography on the resist layer. However, the use of this anti-static layer is not required with the insulating piezoelectric layer laying on a semiconducting substrate such as highly doped silicon. The effect of the e-beam dose on a number of different layers (of insulating, insulating on semiconducting, semiconducting, and conductive natures) is provided. Among other advantages, the use of reduced e-beam doses increases the manufacturing time. The principal aim of this work is to explain the interrelation among e-beam dose, substrate nature and IDT structure. An extensive study of the e-beam lithography of long IDT-fingers is provided, in a wide variety of electrode widths, electrode numbers and electrode pitches. It is worthy to highlight that this work shows the influence of the e-beam dose on five substrates of different conductive nature

We present a combined magnetooptic and ferromagnetic resonance study of a series of arrays of single-crystalline Fe stripes fabricated by electron beam lithography on epitaxial Au(001)/Fe(001)/MgO(001) films grown by pulsed laser deposition. The analysis of the films revealed a clear fourfold magnetocrystalline anisotropy, with no significant presence of other anisotropy sources. The use of a large series of arrays, with stripe widths between 140 and 1000 nm and separation between them of either 200 nm or 500 nm, allowed studying their magnetization processes and resonance modes as well as the effects of the dipolar interactions on both. The magnetization processes of the stripes were interpreted in terms of a macrospin approximation, with a good agreement between experiments and calculations and negligible influence of the dipolar interactions. The ferromagnetic resonance spectra evidenced two types of resonances linked to bulk oscillation modes, essentially insensitive to the dipolar interactions, and a third one associated with edge-localized oscillations, whose resonance field is strongly dependent on the dipolar interactions. The ability to produce a high quality, controlled series of stripes provided a good opportunity to achieve an agreement between the experiments and calculations, carried out by taking into account just the Fe intrinsic properties and the morphology of the arrays, thus evidencing the relatively small role of other extrinsic factors.

Use of a conductive bare tape electrically floating in low Earth orbit as an effective electron beam source to produce artificial auroral effects, free of problems that mard tandard beams, is considered. Ambient ions impacting the tape with keV energies over most of its length liberate secondary electrons that race down the magnetic field, excite neutrals in the E layer, and result in auroral emissions. The tether would operate with both a power supply and a plasma contactor off at nighttime; power and contactor would be on at daytime for reboost. Tomographic analysis of auroral emissions from the footprint of the beam, as observed from the spacecraft, can provide density profiles of dominant neutral species in the E layer. A characteristic tether system, at altitude 300 km and moderate orbital inclination, would involve an aluminum tape with a length of 20 km, a width of 15 mm, and a thickness of 0.2 mm for a full-system mass around 1200 kg, with two thirds going into the power subsystem.

GaN based high electron mobility transistors have draw great attention due to its potential in high temperature, high power and high frequency applications [1, 2]. However, significant gate leakage current is still one of the issues which need to be solved to improve the performance and reliability of the devices [3]. Several research groups have contributed to solve this problem by using metal–oxide–semiconductor HEMTs (MOSHEMTs), with a thin dielectric layer, such as SiO2 [4], Al2O3 [5], HfO2 [6] and Gd2O3 [7] between the gate and the barrier layer on AlGaN/GaN heterostructures. Gd2O3 has shown low interfacial density of states(Dit) with GaN and a high dielectric constant and low electrical leakage currents [8], thus is considered as a promising candidate for the gate dielectrics on GaN. MOS-HEMTs using Gd2O3 grown by electron-beam heating [7] or molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) [8] on GaN or AlGan/GaN structure have been investigated, but further research is still needed in Gd2O3 based AlGaN/GaN MOSHEMTs.

ABSTRACT Nuclear fusion is, today, an alternative energy source to which the international community devotes a great effort. The goal is to generate 10 to 50 times more energy than the input power by means of fusion reactions that occur in deuterium (D) and tritium (T) plasma at two hundred million degrees Celsius. In the future commercial reactors it will be necessary to breed the tritium used as fuel in situ, by the reactor itself. This constitutes a step further from current experimental machines dedicated mainly to the study of the plasma physics. Therefore, tritium, in fusion reactors, will be produced in the so-called breeder blankets whose primary mission is to provide neutron shielding, produce and recover tritium and convert the neutron energy into heat. There are different concepts of breeding blankets that can be separated into two main categories: solids or liquids. The former are based on ceramics containing lithium as Li2O , Li4SiO4 , Li2TiO3 , Li2ZrO3 and Be, used as a neutron multiplier, required to achieve the required amount of tritium. The liquid concepts are based on molten salts or liquid metals as pure Li, LiPb, FLIBE or FLINABE. These blankets use, as neutron multipliers, Be or Pb (in the case of the concepts based on LiPb). Proposed structural materials comprise various options, always with low activation characteristics, as low activation ferritic-martensitic steels, vanadium alloys or even SiCf/SiC. Each concept of breeding blanket has specific challenges that will be studied in the experimental reactor ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor). However, ITER cannot answer questions associated to material damage and the effect of neutron radiation in the different breeding blankets functions and performance. As a reference, the first wall of a fusion reactor of 4000 MW will receive about 30 dpa / year (values for Fe-56) , while values expected in ITER would be <10 dpa in its entire lifetime. Consequently, the irradiation effects on candidate materials for fusion reactors will be studied in IFMIF (International Fusion Material Irradiation Facility). This thesis fits in the framework of the bilateral agreement among Europe and Japan which is called “Broader Approach Agreement “(BA) (2007-2017) where Spain plays a key role. These projects, complementary to ITER, are mainly IFMIF and the fusion facility JT-60SA. The purpose of this thesis is the design of an irradiation module to test candidate materials for breeding blankets in IFMIF, the so-called Liquid Breeder Validation Module (LBVM). This proposal is born from the fact that this option was not considered in the conceptual design of the facility. As a first step, in order to study the feasibility of this proposal, neutronic calculations have been performed to estimate irradiation parameters in different materials foreseen for liquid breeding blankets. Various functional materials were considered: Fe (base of structural materials), SiC (candidate material for flow channel inserts, SiO2 (candidate for antipermeation coatings), CaO (candidate for insulating coatings), Al2O3 (candidate for antipermeation and insulating coatings) and AlN (candidate for insulation coating material). For each material, the most significant irradiation parameters have been calculated (dpa, H/dpa and He/dpa) in different positions of IFMIF. These values were compared to those expected in the first wall and breeding zone of a fusion reactor. For this exercise, a HCLL (Helium Cooled Lithium Lead) type was selected as it is one of the most promising options. In addition, estimated values were also compared with those obtained in a fast fission reactor since most of existing irradiations have been made in these installations. The main conclusion of this study is that the medium flux area of IFMIF offers a good irradiation environment to irradiate functional materials for liquid breeding blankets. The obtained ratios of H/dpa and He/dpa are very similar to those expected in the most irradiated areas of a fusion reactor. Moreover, with the aim of bringing the values further close, the use of a W moderator is proposed to be used only in some experimental campaigns (as obviously, the total amount of dpa decreases). The values of ratios obtained for a fission reactor, much lower than in a fusion reactor, reinforce the need of LBVM for IFMIF. Having demonstrated the suitability of IFMIF to irradiate functional materials for liquid breeding blankets, and an analysis of the main problems associated to each type of liquid breeding blanket, also presented in this thesis, three different experiments are proposed as basis for the design of the LBVM. These experiments are dedicated to the needs of a blanket HCLL type although the applicability of the module for other blankets is also discussed. Therefore, the experimental capability of the module is focused on the study of the behavior of the eutectic alloy LiPb, tritium permeation, corrosion and material compatibility. For each of the experiments proposed an experimental scheme is given explaining the different module conditions and defining the required instrumentation to control and monitor the experimental capsules. In order to carry out the proposed experiments, the LBVM is proposed, located in the medium flux area of the IFMIF hot cell, with capability of up to 16 experimental capsules. Each capsule (24-22 mm of diameter, 80 mm high) will contain the eutectic allow LiPb (up to 50 mm of capsule high) in contact with different material specimens. They will be supported inside rigs or steel pipes. Helium will be used as purge gas, to sweep the tritium generated in the eutectic and permeated through the capsule walls (continuously, during irradiation). These tubes, will be installed in a steel container providing support and cooling for the tubes and hence the inner experimental capsules. The experimental data will consist of on line monitoring signals and the analysis of purge gas by the tritium measurement station. In addition to the experimental signals, the module will produce signals having a safety function and therefore playing a major role in the operation of the module. For an adequate operation of the capsules and to control its temperature, each capsule will be equipped with an electrical heater so the module will to be connected to an electrical power supply. The technical justification behind the dimensioning of each of these parts forming the module is presented supported by tritium transport calculations, thermalhydraulic and structural analysis. One of the main conclusions of the tritium transport calculations is that the measure of the permeated tritium is perfectly achievable by commercial ionization chambers and proportional counters with sensitivity of 10-9 Bq/m3. The results are applicable to all experiments, even to low temperature capsules or to the ones using antipermeation coatings. From a safety point of view, the knowledge of the amount of tritium being swept by the purge gas is a clear indicator of certain problems that may be occurring in the module such a capsule rupture. In addition, the tritium balance in the installation should be known. Losses of purge gas permeated into the refrigerant and the hot cell itself through the container have been assessed concluding that they are negligible for normal operation. Thermal hydraulic calculations were performed in order to optimize the design of experimental capsules and LBVM to fulfill one of the main requirements of the module: to perform experiments at uniform temperatures between 300-550ºC. The necessary cooling of the module and the geometry of the capsules, rigs and testing area of the container were dimensioned. As a result of the analyses, cylindrical capsules and rigs in cylindrical compartments were selected because of their good mechanical behavior (stresses due to fluid pressure are reduced significantly with a cylindrical shape rather than prismatic) and thermal (temperature uniformity in the walls of the tubes and capsules). Fields of pressure, temperature and velocity in different critical areas of the module were obtained concluding that the proposal is feasible. It is important to mention that the use of fluid dynamic codes as ANSYS-CFX (used in this thesis) for designing experimental capsules for IFMIF is not direct. The reason for this is that, under strongly heated helium mini channels, turbulence models tend to underestimate the wall temperature because of the change of helium properties near the wall. Therefore, the different code turbulence models had to be studied in detail and validated against experimental results. ANSYS-CFX SST (Shear Stress Transport Model) for transitional turbulence model has been identified among many others as the suitable one for modeling the cooling helium and the temperature on the walls of experimental capsules. Once the geometry and the main purge and cooling parameters have been defined, the mechanical behavior of each experimental tube or rig including capsules is analyzed. Resulting stresses are compared with the maximum values recommended by applicable structural design codes such as the SDC- IC (Structural Design Criteria for ITER Components) in order to assess the degree of protection against plastic collapse. The conclusion shows that the proposal is mechanically robust. The LBVM involves the use of liquid metals, tritium and the risk associated with neutron activation. The risks related with the handling of liquid metals and tritium are studied in this thesis. In addition, the radiological risks associated with the activation of materials in the module and the residual heat after irradiation are evaluated, including a scenario of loss of coolant. Among the identified conventional risks associated with the module highlights the handling of liquid metals which reactions with water or air are accompanied by the emission of aerosols and fire probability. Regarding the nuclear risks, the generation of radioactive gases such as tritium or volatile radioisotopes such as Po-210 is the main hazard to be considered. An environmental impact associated to possible releases is not expected. Nevertheless, an appropriate handling of capsules, experimental tubes, and container including purge lines is required. After one day after shutdown and one year of irradiation, the experimental area of the module will present a contact dose rate of about 7000 Sv/h, 2300 Sv/h in the experimental capsules and 25 Sv/h in the LiPb. Therefore, the use of remote handling is envisaged for the irradiated module. Finally, the different possibilities for the module manufacturing have been studied. Among the proposed techniques highlights the electro discharge machining, brazing, electron beam welding or laser welding. The bases for the final design of the LBVM have been included in the framework of the this work and included in the intermediate design report of IFMIF which will be developed in future, as part of the IFMIF facility final design.

The metallization stack Ti/Pd/Ag on n-type Si has been readily used in solar cells due to its low metal/semiconductor specific contact resistance, very high sheet conductance, bondability, long-term durability, and cost-effectiveness. In this study, the use of Ti/Pd/Ag metallization on n-type GaAs is examined, targeting electronic devices that need to handle high current densities and with grid-like contacts with limited surface coverage (i.e., solar cells, lasers, or light emitting diodes). Ti/Pd/Ag (50 nm/50 nm/1000 nm) metal layers were deposited on n-type GaAs by electron beam evaporation and the contact quality was assessed for different doping levels (from 1.3 × 1018 cm−3 to 1.6 × 1019 cm−3) and annealing temperatures (from 300°C to 750°C). The metal/semiconductor specific contact resistance, metal resistivity, and the morphology of the contacts were studied. The results show that samples doped in the range of 1018 cm−3 had Schottky-like I–V characteristics and only samples doped 1.6 × 1019 cm−3 exhibited ohmic behavior even before annealing. For the ohmic contacts, increasing annealing temperature causes a decrease in the specific contact resistance (ρ c,Ti/Pd/Ag ~ 5 × 10−4 Ω cm2). In regard to the metal resistivity, Ti/Pd/Ag metallization presents a very good metal conductivity for samples treated below 500°C (ρ M,Ti/Pd/Ag ~ 2.3 × 10−6 Ω cm); however, for samples treated at 750°C, metal resistivity is strongly degraded due to morphological degradation and contamination in the silver overlayer. As compared to the classic AuGe/Ni/Au metal system, the Ti/Pd/Ag system shows higher metal/semiconductor specific contact resistance and one order of magnitude lower metal resistivity.
