The cooperative motion algorithm was applied on the molecular simulation of complex chemical reactions and macromolecular orientation phenomena in confined geometries. First, we investigated the case of equilibrium step-growth polymerization in lamellae, pores and droplets. In such systems, confinement was quantified as the area/volume ratio. Results showed that, as confinement increases, polymerization becomes slower and the average molecular weight (MW) at equilibrium decreases. This is caused by the sterical hindrance imposed by the walls since chain growth reactions in their close vicinity have less realization possibilities. For reactions inside droplets at surfaces, contact angles usually increased after polymerization to compensate conformation restrictions imposed by confinement upon growing chains. In a second investigation, we considered monodisperse and chemically inert chains and focused on the effect of confinement on chain orientation. Simulations of thin polymer films showed that chains are preferably oriented parallel to the surface. Orientation increases as MW increases or as film thickness d decreases, in qualitative agreement with experiments with low MW polystyrene. It is demonstrated that the orientation of simulated chains results from a size effect, being a function of the ratio between chain end-to-end distance and d. This study was complemented by experiments with thin films of pi-conjugated polymers like MEH-PPV. Anisotropic refractive index measurements were used to analyze chain orientation. With increasing MW, orientation is enhanced. However, for MEH-PPV, orientation does not depend on d even at thicknesses much larger than the chain contour length. This contradiction with simulations was discussed by considering additional causes for orientation, for instance the appearance of nematic-like ordering in polymer films. In another investigation, we simulated droplet evaporation at soluble surfaces and reproduced the formation of wells surrounded by ringlike deposits at the surface, as observed experimentally. In our simulations, swollen substrate particles migrate to the border of the droplet to minimize the contact between solvent and vacuum, which costs the most energy. Deposit formation in the beginning of evaporation results in pinning of the droplet. When polymer chains at the substrate surface have strong uniaxial orientation, the resulting pattern is no longer similar to a ring but to a pair of half-moons. In a final stage, as an extension for the model developed for polymerization in nanoreactors, we studied the effect of geometrical confinement on a hypothetical oscillating reaction following the mechanism of the so called periodically forced Brusselator. It was shown that a reaction which is chaotic in the bulk may be driven to periodicity by confinement and vice-versa, opening new perspectives for chaos control.

The main objective of this thesis is to explore the short and long run causality patterns in the finance – growth nexus and finance-growth-trade nexus before and after the global financial crisis, in the case of Albania. To this end we use quarterly data on real GDP, 13 proxy measures for financial development and the trade openness indicator for the period 1998Q1 – 2013Q2 and 1998Q1-2008Q3. Causality patterns will be explored in a VAR-VECM framework. For this purpose we will proceed as follows: (i) testing for the integration order of the variables; (ii) cointegration analysis and (iii) performing Granger causality tests in a VAR-VECM framework. In the finance-growth nexus, empirical evidence suggests for a positive long run relationship between finance and economic growth, with causality running from financial development to economic growth. The global financial crisis seems to have not affected the causality direction in the finance and growth nexus, thus supporting the finance led growth hypothesis in the long run in the case of Albania. In the finance-growth-trade openness nexus, we found evidence for a positive long run relationship the variables, with causality direction depending on the proxy used for financial development. When the pre-crisis sample is considered, we find evidence for causality running from financial development and trade openness to economic growth. The global financial crisis seems to have affected somewhat the causality direction in the finance-growth-trade nexus, which has become sensible to the proxy used for financial development. On the short run, empirical evidence suggests for a clear unidirectional relationship between finance and growth, with causality mostly running from economic growth to financial development. When we consider the per-crisis sub sample results are mixed, depending on the proxy used for financial development. The same results are confirmed when trade openness is taken into account.

Despite rapid advances in the development of materials and techniques for endovascular intracranial aneurysm treatment, occlusion of large broad-neck aneurysms remains a challenge. Animal models featuring complex aneurysm architecture are needed to test endovascular innovations and train interventionalists.

The synthesis and the photophysical properties of the complex [Ru(TTF-dppz)(2)(Aqphen)](2+) (TTF = tetrathiafulvalene, dppz = dipyrido-[3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine, Aqphen = anthraquinone fused to phenanthroline via a pyrazine bridge) are described. In this molecular triad excitation into the metal ligand charge transfer bands results in the creation of a long-lived charge separated state with TTF acting as electron donor and anthraquinone as terminal acceptor. The lifetime of the charge-separated state is 400 ns in dichloromethane at room temperature. A mechanism for the charge separation involving an intermediate charge-separated state is proposed based on transient absorption spectroscopy.

The malaria parasite Plasmodium depends on the tight control of cysteine-protease activity throughout its life cycle. Recently, the characterization of a new class of potent inhibitors of cysteine proteases (ICPs) secreted by Plasmodium has been reported. Here, the recombinant production, purification and crystallization of the inhibitory C-terminal domain of ICP from P. berghei in complex with the P. falciparum haemoglobinase falcipain-2 is described. The 1:1 complex was crystallized in space group P4(3), with unit-cell parameters a = b = 71.15, c = 120.09 A. A complete diffraction data set was collected to a resolution of 2.6 A.

In experimental aneurysm models, long-term patency without spontaneous thrombosis is the most important precondition for analyses of embolization devices. We recently reported the feasibility of creating complex venous pouch bifurcation aneurysms in the rabbit with low morbidity, low mortality, and high short-term aneurysm patency. In order to further evaluate our model, we examined the long-term patency rate.

BACKGROUND: Despite advances in surgical and interventional techniques, the optimal surgical treatment of severe aortic (re) coarctation and hypoplastic aortic arch is still controversial. Anatomic repair may require extensive dissection, cardiopulmonary bypass, and deep hypothermic circulatory arrest with their inherent risks. The aim of this study was to analyze the outcome of off-pump extraanatomic aortic bypass as a surgical alternative to local repair. METHODS: From February 2000 to December 2005, ten consecutive patients (median age 20 years; range, 11 to 38 years) with severe aortic (re) coarctation (n = 4) and (or) hypoplastic aortic arch (n = 7) underwent off-pump extraanatomic aortic bypass through median sternotomy. All but three patients had undergone previous surgery for coarctation and angioplasty or stenting. Three patients underwent concomitant replacement of the ascending aorta because of an aneurysm using cardiopulmonary bypass. RESULTS: Postoperative hospital course was uneventful in all patients. There was no perioperative mortality or significant morbidity. During a mean follow-up of 48 +/- 22 months no patient required additional procedures. All patients were free of symptoms; no patient showed signs of heart failure after follow-up. At last follow-up, no patient presented with claudication, nor any patient experienced orthostatic problems due to a steal phenomenon. During follow-up, hypertension resolved in all patients with residual mild hypertension in two patients. CONCLUSIONS: Off-pump extraanatomic aortic bypass is an attractive treatment option for complex aortic (re) coarctation and hypoplastic aortic arch. Perioperative risks are minimized, hypertension is influenced favorably, and midterm survival is event-free.

OBJECTIVE This study aimed to test the prediction from the Perception and Attention Deficit model of complex visual hallucinations (CVH) that impairments in visual attention and perception are key risk factors for complex hallucinations in eye disease and dementia. METHODS Two studies ran concurrently to investigate the relationship between CVH and impairments in perception (picture naming using the Graded Naming Test) and attention (Stroop task plus a novel Imagery task). The studies were in two populations-older patients with dementia (n = 28) and older people with eye disease (n = 50) with a shared control group (n = 37). The same methodology was used in both studies, and the North East Visual Hallucinations Inventory was used to identify CVH. RESULTS A reliable relationship was found for older patients with dementia between impaired perceptual and attentional performance and CVH. A reliable relationship was not found in the population of people with eye disease. CONCLUSIONS The results add to previous research that object perception and attentional deficits are associated with CVH in dementia, but that risk factors for CVH in eye disease are inconsistent, suggesting that dynamic rather than static impairments in attentional processes may be key in this population.
