The human papillomavirus (HPV) has been historically associated with head and neck cancers, although its role in oral carcinogenesis remains poorly defined. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of HPV in mouth floor squamous cell carcinoma and correlate it with clinicopathologic variables, risk factors and survival. HPV presence was evaluated by nested polymerase chain reaction (nPCR) in 29 paraffin-embedded specimens of mouth floor squamous cell carcinoma. HPV DNA was detected in 17.2% (5 of 29) of the specimens; the highest prevalence was observed in non-smoking patients over the age of 60 years. All HPV DNA positive specimens were detected in men with clinical stage III and IV lesions, being most of which were moderately differentiated. Despite this correlation there were no statistically significant differences observed among the analyzed variables, including patients' survival. The relatively low incidence of HPV DNA present in these tumors suggests that this virus does not, by itself, have a significant role in the development of mouth floor squamous cell carcinoma. Both cholangiocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma of the stomach stratified squamous epithelial portion are rarely found in equine medicine despite being more common in human beings, dogs, and cats. The objective of the present article was to report the simultaneous occurrences of these two types of neoplasias in an 11-year-old mare. Numerous firm, whitish nodules were distributed throughout the liver parenchyma and those protruding over its surface were umbilicated in their appearance. It was verified that the nodules adhered to the peritoneum and omentum, diaphragm, spleen, and stomach serosa compressed the adjacent structures. The stomach stratified squamous epithelial portion, particularly originating in the margo plicatus toward the cardia, was covered by numerous smooth, whitish spherules. Microscopic examination allowed the liver, tumor, and the abdominal implants to be identified as a cholangiocarcinoma, and the stomach neoplasia as a carcinoma of its stratified squamous epithelial portion. Considering this as an uncommon finding, although when considered individually, the presence of a cholangiocarcinoma and a squamous cell carcinoma of the stratified squamous epithelial portion of the equine stomach in the same specimen is worthy of reporting. Described is a case of squamous-cell carcinoma arising in a residual cyst in a 60-year-old edentulous woman. The clinical and radiographic diagnosis was residual cyst, and the treatment employed was conservative surgical enucleation. The cause of these changes is unknown. Theoretically, the inflammatory reaction may have been a predisposing factor.

Chromosome analysis of short-term culture of a basal cell carcinoma showed five clonal chromosome abnormalities, t(9;14)(q12 or q13;p11), del(1)(q23 or q25), trisomy 5, trisomy 7, and monosomy X. In addition, several nonclonal structural and numerical changes were seen in the tumor cells.

The authors studied the expression of estrogen receptor (ER) in tissues of breast carcinomas which were previously fixed in formalin and paraffin-embedded. The ER expression was correlated with several histological findings, namely grade of differentiation, tumor necrosis, desmoplasia, lymphocytic infiltration and elastosis. The ER was detected in tissues using the avidin-biotin immunoperoxidase technique associated with the H222 monoclonal antibody from Abbott. All 39 biopsies were of infiltrating ductal carcinoma of breast and 16 of them expressed ER. The statistical analysis showed that the expression of ER was correlated with histological findings of good prognosis as well differentiated carcinomas, no tumor necrosis, absence or mild lymphocytic infiltration around the tumor cells and severe elastosis.

The effects of therapy in locally advanced breast cancer submitted to combined conventional telecobalt therapy plus chemotherapy with cyclophosphamide and 5-fluorouracil were studied in 49 patients. Associated to radical mastectomy in operable cases. Local tumor control was achieved in 86.7%. There were no local recurrences in those submitted to surgery but they reached 21.7% in inoperable patients who received only radiation therapy and chemotherapy. The median follow-up time for dead patients was 29.5 months and for living patients 79.3 months. The index of complete responses was 24.5% and the median disease free interval was 22.9 months. The overall survival rate, between three and five years, was 32.7%. Estrogen receptors were identified by using immunohistochemical assay ER-ICA and monoclonal antibody H222-SP gamma, Abbott. There were no differences in the complete response index, disease free interval and survival rates, among ER-positive and ER-negative patients, explained by the far advanced stage of the disease. ER-positivity was significantly correlated with histological features of the tumors: cell differentiation, presence of elastosis, absence of lymphocytic infiltration and absence of tumor necrosis.

Transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) of the bladder is a neoplasm with variability in its clinical behavior. Although there are several studies correlating stage and ABO isoantigen expression with invasiveness, there is no single predictor factor to assess the potential invasiveness, especially in the low grade, non-invasive TCC. In the present study we evaluated the correlation of histological grade plus stage and the expression of beta human chorionic gonadotropin (beta-hCG), in 100 cases of TCC, with the clinical behavior. These features were correlated with tumor progression in patients with at least two years of follow up. We observed more aggressiveness in G4 group (high grade and invasive) (93% had tumor progression) when compared to G1 group (low grade and superficial) (11% had tumor progression). However in 25.5% of the TCC cases (groups G2: low grade and invasive and G3: high grade and superficial) the clinical behavior was intermediate, showing some limitation in using grading and staging only, as a predictive factor. There was an expression of beta-hCG in 21.4% of the cases in up to 25% of the tumor cells without any trophoblastic morphology. These beta-hCG producing TCC had a strong correlation with aggressiveness: 39.1% and 12.8% of the TCC expressed beta-hCG with and without tumor progression, respectively.

Basaloid squamous carcinoma is an aggressive subtype of squamous carcinoma of superior aerodigestive tract. This tumor has been recently described and it seems to have higher incidence in tongue, hypopharynx and supraglottis. It has more agressive biological behavior than pure type of squamous cell carcinoma. We report 4 cases of this tumor and we present a review of the literature.

B6D2F1 mice (45/group) were treated with N-butyl-N-(4- hydroxybutyl)nitrosamine (BBN) or uracil as follows: Group 1 received 0.05% BBN in drinking water for the entire experiment, Group 2 received 5 mg of BBN by gastric gavage in 0.1 mL of 20% ethanol twice per week for 10 wk, Group 3 received a 2.5% uracil-containing diet for the entire experiment, and Group 4 was controls (received 0.1 mL of 20% ethanol by gavage twice per week for 10 wk). The surviving mice in Group 1 were killed after week 26 and those in the other groups after week 30. By week 15, three of 11 Group 1 and one of 15 Group 2 mice had bladder carcinoma. By 26 and 30 wk, respectively, invasive carcinomas were observed in 33 of 34 and six of 21 mice in Groups 1 and 2 and renal pelvic carcinomas in 11 of 34 and three of 21 mice in Groups 1 and 2. Four of 19 uracil-treated mice had bladder nodular hyperplasia. By polymerase chain reaction-single-strand conformation polymorphism and sequence analyses, 16 of 20 and two of five bladder carcinomas from Groups 1 and 2, respectively, showed mutations in the p53 gene. Ha-ras mutation was present in one case. Loss of heterozygosity analysis with simple-sequence length polymorphism markers for chromosome 4 showed that 10 of 21, two of 15, and nine of 13 mice in Groups 1-3, respectively, had heterozygous or homozygous deletions. B6D2F1 mice are therefore susceptible to the urothelial carcinogenic effects of BBN and develop frequent p53 mutations and chromosome 4 deletions. Chromosome 4 deletions were also seen with uracil.

BACKGROUND: Metastasis of renal cell carcinoma to the vagina is rare, although it may be the first evidence of the existence of the primary tumor. CASE: A metastatic deposit of renal cell carcinoma in the vagina was diagnosed by cytology as clear cell adenocarcinoma, which was confirmed by biopsy. Radiographic and ultrasound examinations confirmed the renal site of origin, which was corroborated by immunohistochemistry of the biopsy specimen. CONCLUSION: When a cytologic diagnosis of vaginal clear cell adenocarcinoma is made, metastasis of renal cell carcinoma should be considered in the differential diagnosis.

The renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the seventh most common malignancy, accounting for more than 3% of cancer incidence in the United States. RCC is more common in males, occurring primarily in the 5 th to 7 th decades of life. At the time of presentation one third of the patients have advanced disease and about 50% of the patients that underwent radical nephrectomy have recurrence. With the mainstream implementation of imaging modalities, such as ultrasound, the incidental detection of RCC has dramatically increased in recent years. Patients with metastatic RCC without treatment have na average survival of 6 to 10 months, and only 10 to 20% can be expected to survive 2 years. Treatment for patients with advanced disease remains unsatisfactory and the metastatic renal cancer continue to present a therapeutic challenge systemic therapies employed in patients with this tumor include chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, and immunotherapy. The authors review the treatment strategies of the metastatic renal cell carcinoma (RCC).
