2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-5-phenyl-1, 3, 4-oxadiazole (HOXD), characteristic of excited state intramolecular proton-transfer (ESIPT), was synthesized and found to emit strong blue phosphorescence in the solid state at room temperature and at low temperature (77 K). The photoluminescent spectrum measurement in solution showed that there are two kinds of emission: fluorescence originated from the singlet state and phosphorescence derived from the triplet state in HOXD formed by ESIPT. For the photoluminescent spectrum in the solid state, only phosphorescence emission with the lifetime of 66 mus was observed. Multiple-layer light-emitting diodes with the configuration of ITO/NPB/HOXD/BCP/Alq(3)/Mg:Ag were fabricated using HOXD as emitter and the maximum brightness of 656 cd/m(2) and the luminous efficiency of 0.14 lm/W was obtained.

We report a blue organic light-emitting device having an emissive layer of 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-5-phenyl-1,3,4-oxadiazole (HOXD), that exhibits excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT). The device had a luminance efficiency of 0.8 cd/A and a maximum brightness of 870 cd/m(2). Electroluminescence spectra revealed a dominating peak at 450 nm and two additional peaks at 480 and 515 nm with a full width at half maximum of 50 nm. Our studies indicate that some EL may originate from the triplet excitation state of the enol form of HOXD.

Biphenyl- (Biph-) containing 1-alkynes (3 and 4) and their polymers (1 and 2) with varying bridge groups and spacer lengths were synthesized and the effects of the structural variation on their properties, especially their mesomorphism and photoluminescence behaviors, were studied. The acetylene monomers 3(3) [HCdropC(CH2)(3)O-Biph-OCO(CH2)(10)CH3] and 4(m) [HCdropC(CH2)(m)OCO-Biph-OCO(CH2)(10)-CH3, m = 3, 4] were prepared by sequential etherization and esterification reactions of 1-alkynes. While 3(3) exhibits enantiotropic crystal E and SmB mesophases, its structural cousin 4(3) displays only a monotropic SmB phase. Enantiotropic SmA and SmB mesophases are, however, developed when the spacer length is increased to 4. Polymerizations of the monomers are effected by Mo-, W-, Rh-, and Fe-based catalysts, with the WCl6-Ph4Sn catalyst giving the best results (isolation yield up to 85% and M-w up to 59000). The polymers were characterized by IR, UV, NMR, TGA, DSC, POM, XRD, and PL analyses. Compared to 1(3), 2(3) shows a red-shifted absorption, a higher T-i, and a better packed interdigitated bilayer SmA(d) structure, while the mesophase of 2(4) involves monolayer-packing arrangements of the mesogens. Upon photoexcitation, 1(3) emits almost no light but 2(m) gives a strong ultraviolet emission (lambda(max) similar to 350 nm), whose intensity increases with the spacer length.

In this study, electrode responses to a large number of electroactive species with different standard potentials at the molybdenum oxide-modified carbon fibre microdisk array (CFMA) electrode were investigated. The results demonstrated that the electrochemical behavior for those redox species with formal potentials more positive than similar to 0.0 V at the molybdenum oxide-modified CFMA electrode were affected by the range and direction of the potential scan, which were different from that at a bare CFMA electrode. If the lower limit of the potential scan was more positive than the reduction potential of the molybdenum oxide film, neither the oxidation nor the reduction peaks of the redox species tested could be observed. This indicates that electron transfer between the molybdenum oxide film on the electrode and the electroactive species in solution is blocked due to the existence of a high resistance between the film and electrolyte in these potential ranges. If the lower limit of the potential scan was more negative than the reduction potential of the molybdenum oxide film (similar to - 0.6 V), the oxidation peaks of these species occurred at the potentials near their formal potentials. In addition, the electrochemical behavior of these redox species at the molybdenum oxide-modified CFMA electrode showed a diffusionless electron transfer process. On the other hand, the redox species with formal potentials more negative than similar to - 0.2 V showed similar reversible voltammetric behaviors at both the molybdenum oxide-modified CFMA electrode and the bare electrode. This can be explained by the structure changes of the film before and after reduction of the film. In addition we also observed that the peak currents of some redox species at the modified electrode were much larger than those at a bare electrode under the same conditions, which has been explained by the interaction between these redox species and the reduction state of the molybdenum oxide film. A highly dispersed ultramicro palladium-particle modified carbon fiber microdisk array electrode (Pd-CFE) was employed for capillary electrophoresis-electrochemical (CEEC) detection of hydroxylamine (HA). The Pd particles obtained were in the nanometer scale, had a high electrocatalytic activity towards HA and exhibited good reproducibility and stability. A linear relationship between the current and the analyte concentration was found between 5 x 10(-6) and 1 x 10(-3) mol/l of HA with a correlation coefficient of 0.9992. The detection limit was 5 x 10(-8) mol/l. The applicability of the method for the determination of HA in river water and waste water was investigated.

A palladium particle-modified carbon fiber microdisk array electrode was designed and employed in capillary electrophoresis for the simultaneous detection of hydrazine, methylhydrazine, and isoniazid. The Pd-modified microdisk electrode had high catalytic ability for hydrazines and exhibited good reproducibility and stability. The response for hydrazine was linear over 3 orders of magnitude with a correlation coefficient of 0.993. The detection limits far hydrazine, methylhydrazine, and isoniazid were 1.2, 2.1, and 6.2 pg, respectively.

A Teflon bridge/edge-eliminator is designed to connect a glass container and a light-transparent gold-minigrid NaCl thin-layer cell to form a vertically configured in-situ FTIR spectroelectrochemical cell. The bridge/edge-eliminator sets an internal reference point for accurate potential control. The size of the thin-layer chamber is 5 X 5 X 0.11mm. A 1900-omega formal resistance of the thin-layer cell was measured in CH2Cl2/0.1 M TBAP solution. Well defined thin-layer cyclic voltammograms and IR spectral changes for ferrocene oxidation were obtained.

The pacifastin family, characterized by several conserved arrays of six cysteine residues, is a newly identified serine protease inhibitor (SPI) family discovered uniquely in arthropods and plays important roles in multiple biological processes. In the present study, the full-length cDNA of a pacifastin light chain (designated ESPLC) was cloned from the Chinese mitten crab Eriocheir sinensis by expressed sequence tags (ESTs) and PCR techniques. The 1036 bp ESPLC cDNA contained an 831 bp open reading frame (ORF) encoding a putative pacifastin-related peptide of 276 amino acids, a 5'-untranslated region (UTR) of 67 bp, and a 3'-UTR of 138 bp. Six putative conserved domains sharing a characteristic cysteine array (Cys-Xaa(9-12)-Cys-Asn-Xaa-Cys-Xaa-Cys-Xaa(2-3)-Gly-Xaa(3-4)-Cys-Thr-Xaa(3)-Cys) were identified in the deduced amino acid sequence of ESPLC. The conservation of these PLDs (pacifastin light chain domains) and the relative higher similarity of ESPLC to other pacifastin-related precursors suggested that ESPLC was a member of pacifastin family. The mRNA transcripts of ESPLC were found to be higher expressed in hepatopancreas, gill and haemolymph than in gonad, muscle and heart, with the highest expression level in hepatopancreas. The ESPLC mRNA expression in haemolymph of Chinese mitten crab was up-regulated at 2 h and 12 h after challenged with Listonella anguillarum. The tissue distribution and temporal characteristics of ESPLC mRNA expression, similar to that of prophenoloxidase gene in E. sinensis, suggested that ESPLC was potentially involved in the response against invading bacteria, with the possibility that it functioned in the prophenoloxidase system in E sinensis. A one-meter long column packed with silica gel is used to separate light hydrocarbons. The silica gel has been modified with several kinds of gas chromatography stationary phases. Among these, PEG 2000 shows fairly good effect when using 80-100 meshes silica gel for the separation of mixture of methane, ethane, ethylene, acetylene, propane, propylene and n-, i-butane. The different behavior of silica gel between batch to batch is also found. When silica gel is coated with a small amount of Al2O3 prepared with sol-gel method, better resolution has been observed on a 2-meter column compared with the non-modified silica gel.

Although broadband incoherent light does not efficiently couple into a high-finesse optical cavity, its transmission is readily detectable and enables applications in cavity-enhanced absorption spectroscopy in the gas phase, liquid phase and on surfaces. This chapter gives an overview of measurement principles and experimental approaches implementing incoherent light sources in cavity-enhanced spectroscopic applications. The general principles of broadband CEAS are outlined and general “pros and cons” discussed, detailing aspects like cavity mirror reflectivity calibration or the establishment of detection limits. Different approaches concerning light sources, cavity design and detection schemes are discussed and a comprehensive overview of the current literature based on a methodological classification scheme is also presented.

ct: We introduce a new concept for stimulated-Brillouin-scattering-based slow light in optical fibers that is applicable for broadly-tunable frequency-swept sources. It allows slow light to be achieved, in principle, over the entire transparency window of the optical fiber. We demonstrate a slow light delay of 10 ns at 1.55 μm using a 10-m-long photonic crystal fiber with a source sweep rate of 400 MHz/μs and a pump power of 200 mW. We also show that there exists a maximal delay obtainable by this method, which is set by the SBS threshold, independent of sweep rate. For our fiber with optimum length, this maximum delay is ~38 ns, obtained for a pump power of 760 mW.

The generation of a spatially single-mode white-light supercontinuum has been observed in a photonic crystal fiber pumped with 60-ps pulses of subkilowatt peak power. The spectral broadening is identified as being due to the combined action of stimulated Raman scattering and parametric four-wave-mixing generation, with a negligible contribution from the self-phase modulation of the pump pulses. The experimental results are in good agreement with detailed numerical simulations. These findings demonstrate that ultrafast femtosecond pulses are not needed for efficient supercontinuum generation in photonic crystal fibers. © 2001 Optical Society of America.
