Objective: To portray an information literacy programme demonstrating a high level of integration in health sciences curricula and a teaching orientation aiming towards the development of lifelong learning skills. The setting is a French-speaking North American university. Methods: The offering includes standard workshops such as MEDLINE searching and specialised sessions such as pharmaceutical patents searching. A contribution to an international teaching collaboration in Haiti where workshops had to be thoroughly adapted to the clientele is also presented. Online guides addressing information literacy topics complement the programme. Results and evaluation: A small team of librarians and technicians taught 276 hours of library instruction during the 2011-2012 academic year. Methods used for evaluating information skills include scoring features of literature searches and user satisfaction surveys. Discussion: Privileged contacts between librarians and faculty resulting from embedded library instruction as well as from active participation in library committees result in a growing reputation of library services across academic departments and bring forth collaboration opportunities. Sustainability and evolution of the library instruction programme is warranted by frequent communication with partners in the clinical field, active involvement in academic networks and health library associations, and reflective professional strategies.

La démarche scientifique (ou expérimentale) en milieu scolaire nécessite des savoir-faire expérimentaux qui ne s’acquièrent habituellement qu’en présentiel, c’est-à-dire en laboratoire institutionnel où l’enseignant ou le technicien sont présents et peuvent, à tout moment, assister pleinement l’apprenant dans sa démarche d’investigation scientifique et technologique. Ils peuvent l’orienter, le diriger, susciter sa réflexion, faire des démonstrations réelles ou contrôler son expérimentation en lui montrant comment paramétrer les outils d’expérimentation assistée par ordinateur (ExAO). Pour répondre aux besoins de la formation à distance, cette recherche de développement en didactique des sciences et de la technologie propose de mettre à la disposition des apprenants et des enseignants un environnement de laboratoire informatisé, contrôlé et assisté à distance. Cet environnement, axé sur un microlaboratoire d’ExAO (MicrolabExAO), que nous avons nommé Ex@O pour le distinguer, a été testé de manière fonctionnelle, puis évalué en situation réelle par des étudiants-maîtres et des élèves de l’éducation des adultes qui ont pratiqué et expérimenté la démarche scientifique, en situation de laboratoire réel, mais à distance. Pour ce faire, nous avons couplé le logiciel MicrolabExAO à un logiciel de prise en main à distance avec outils audio et vidéo (Teamviewer). De plus, nous avons créé et inséré, dans le logiciel MicrolabExAO, une aide en ligne pour télécharger et faciliter la prise en main à distance. Puisque cet environnement Ex@O permet de multiplier les contacts des apprenants avec une expérimentation concrète, ce prototype répond bien à l’un des objectifs du Programme de formation de l’école québécoise (PFEQ) qui est de rendre l’apprenant plus actif dans ses apprentissages. Et parce que ce premier prototype d’environnement Ex@O permet d’effectuer des activités en laboratoire à distance, nous avons pu vérifier qu’il met aussi l’accent, non seulement sur les savoirs, mais également sur les savoir-faire expérimentaux en sciences et technologie, traditionnellement développés dans les locaux des laboratoires institutionnels. Notons ici que la démarche expérimentale s’acquiert très majoritairement en laboratoire en pratiquant, souvent et régulièrement, le processus inductif et déductif propre à cette démarche. Cette pratique de la démarche expérimentale, à distance, avec la technologie Ex@O qui l’accompagne, nous a permis de vérifier que celle-ci était possible, voire comparable à la réalisation, pas-à-pas, d’un protocole expérimental effectué dans un laboratoire institutionnel.

Objective: An interprofessional steering committee was created at Université de Montréal’s Faculty of Medicine to examine how social media are integrated in medical and health professional education in universities across the globe, and to propose a strategic plan for integrating social media in the Faculty’s various curricula. This presentation will summarize the steering committee’s work and describe the librarian’s contribution. Methods: The Committee’s project leader first conducted a literature search on best practices of social media in medical and health professional curricula. A reference website was then created (mse.med.umontreal.ca) to provide easy access to a large number of the articles and resources reviewed. A steering committee was constituted and 11 meetings were held over a 9-month period. The Committee comprised 18 members and included assistant deans, academic program directors, professors, communication advisors, undergraduate and graduate students and a librarian. An online survey on social media use by students and professors of the Faculty was conducted, ten pilot projects were put forward and a three-year strategic plan was proposed. Results: A total of 1508 students and 565 professors participated in the survey. Results showed that both groups had a strong interest in learning how social media could be integrated in academic and professional activities. Participants reported concern with risks associated with social media use and expressed the need for a Faculty policy and guidelines. The librarian’s contribution to the steering committee included: writing posts on the website’s internal blog, assisting in the design of the survey questionnaires and writing the final report’s survey results chapter. She also proposed two pilot projects: creating a social media learning portal and an altmetrics workshop. Conclusions: Based on the literature review and the survey results, the Committee affirmed the importance of integrating social media in the various study programs of the Faculty of Medicine. Despite the restricted timeline, this interprofessional steering committee was able to carry out its mandate because of the leadership and expertise of each of its members. As the librarian had the most experience with the use of social media in a professional context, her knowledge was instrumental in assisting the project leader in a group mainly composed of social media non-users.

The development of computer and network technology is changing the education scenario and transforming the teaching and learning process from the traditional physical environment to the digital environment. It is now possible to access vast amount of information online and enable one to one communication without the confines of place or time. While E-learning and teaching is unlikely to replace face-to-face training and education it is becoming an additional delivery method, providing new learning opportunities to many users. It is also causing an impact on library services as the increased use of ICT and web based learning technologies have paved the way for providing new ICT based services and resources to the users. Online learning has a crucial role in user education, information literacy programmes and in training the library professionals. It can help students become active learners, and libraries will have to play a greater role in this process of transformation. The significance of libraries within an institution has improved due to the fact that academic libraries and information services are now responsible for e-learning within their organization.

Poly(amidoamine) dendrimers were synthesized on cross-linked aminomethyl polystyrene. Palladium complexes of supported dendrimers prepared by ligand exchange method were reduced to dendrimernanoparticle conjugates supported on polystyrene resin. The supported nanoparticles were used as heterogeneous catalysts for the Suzuki coupling between aryl boronic acids and aryl halides. Various factors affecting the catalysts performance were studied. Higher generation dendrimers gave well-defined nanoparticles without agglomeration and these particles showed good catalytic performance

Econometrics is a young science. It developed during the twentieth century in the mid-1930’s, primarily after the World War II. Econometrics is the unification of statistical analysis, economic theory and mathematics. The history of econometrics can be traced to the use of statistical and mathematics analysis in economics. The most prominent contributions during the initial period can be seen in the works of Tinbergen and Frisch, and also that of Haavelmo in the 1940's through the mid 1950's. Right from the rudimentary application of statistics to economic data, like the use of laws of error through the development of least squares by Legendre, Laplace, and Gauss, the discipline of econometrics has later on witnessed the applied works done by Edge worth and Mitchell. A very significant mile stone in its evolution has been the work of Tinbergen, Frisch, and Haavelmo in their development of multiple regression and correlation analysis. They used these techniques to test different economic theories using time series data. In spite of the fact that some predictions based on econometric methodology might have gone wrong, the sound scientific nature of the discipline cannot be ignored by anyone. This is reflected in the economic rationale underlying any econometric model, statistical and mathematical reasoning for the various inferences drawn etc. The relevance of econometrics as an academic discipline assumes high significance in the above context. Because of the inter-disciplinary nature of econometrics (which is a unification of Economics, Statistics and Mathematics), the subject can be taught at all these broad areas, not-withstanding the fact that most often Economics students alone are offered this subject as those of other disciplines might not have adequate Economics background to understand the subject. In fact, even for technical courses (like Engineering), business management courses (like MBA), professional accountancy courses etc. econometrics is quite relevant. More relevant is the case of research students of various social sciences, commerce and management. In the ongoing scenario of globalization and economic deregulation, there is the need to give added thrust to the academic discipline of econometrics in higher education, across various social science streams, commerce, management, professional accountancy etc. Accordingly, the analytical ability of the students can be sharpened and their ability to look into the socio-economic problems with a mathematical approach can be improved, and enabling them to derive scientific inferences and solutions to such problems. The utmost significance of hands-own practical training on the use of computer-based econometric packages, especially at the post-graduate and research levels need to be pointed out here. Mere learning of the econometric methodology or the underlying theories alone would not have much practical utility for the students in their future career, whether in academics, industry, or in practice This paper seeks to trace the historical development of econometrics and study the current status of econometrics as an academic discipline in higher education. Besides, the paper looks into the problems faced by the teachers in teaching econometrics, and those of students in learning the subject including effective application of the methodology in real life situations. Accordingly, the paper offers some meaningful suggestions for effective teaching of econometrics in higher education

The Paper unfolds the paradox that exists in the tribal community with respect to the development indicators and hence tries to cull out the difference in the standard of living of the tribes in a dichotomous framework, forward and backward. Four variables have been considered for ascertaining the standard of living and socio-economic conditions of the tribes. The data for the study is obtained from a primary survey in the three tribal predominant districts of Wayanad, Idukki and Palakkad. Wayanad was selected for studying six tribal communities (Paniya, Adiya, Kuruma, Kurichya, Urali and Kattunaika), Idukki for two communities (Malayarayan and Muthuvan) and Palakkad for one community (Irula). 500 samples from 9 prominent tribal communities of Kerala have been collected according to multistage proportionate random sample framework. The analysis highlights the disproportionate nature of socio-economic indicators within the tribes in Kerala owing to the failure of governmental schemes and assistances meant for their empowerment. The socio-economic variables, such as education, health, and livelihood have been augmented with SLI based on correlation analysis gives interesting inference for policy options as high educated tribal communities are positively correlated with high SLI and livelihood. Further, each of the SLI variable is decomposed using Correlation and Correspondence analysis for understanding the relative standing of the nine tribal sub communities in the three dimensional framework of high, medium and low SLI levels. Tribes with good education and employment (Malayarayan, Kuruma and Kurichya) have a better living standard and hence they can generally be termed as forward tribes whereas those with a low or poor education, employment and living standard indicators (Paniya, Adiya, Urali, Kattunaika, Muthuvans and Irula) are categorized as backward tribes

Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien über das Internet bieten vielfältige Möglichkeit innovative Lernumgebungen zu schaffen. Mit der Zukunftswerkstatt-online wird der Versuch unternommen, die Lernmethode Zukunftswerkstatt, als telekooperative Lernumgebung zu gestalten. Die Entwicklung dieser internetbasierten Lernumgebung und das damit verbundene Dissertationsvorhaben zeichnet sich vornehmlich durch den partizipativen und prozessorientierten Austausch sowohl mit Informatikern als auch mit potentiellen Nutzern in einer Pilotphase aus. Die zentrale Motivation des Forschungsvorhabens erklärt sich über die Entwicklung von Möglichkeiten Lernergruppen Raum zu geben sich ihrer persönlich bedeutsamen Probleme bewusst zu werden, Ideen für Lösungsstrategien zu entwickeln und konkrete Veränderungen anzugehen. Das Forschungsdesign dieser Arbeit bedient sich verschiedener Erhebungs- und Auswertungsmethoden der empirischen Sozialforschung mit dem Ziel, die Grenzen einzelner Methoden zu minimieren, um zu differenzierten Erkenntnissen im Forschungsfeld zu gelangen. Die Evaluation des Forschungsvorhabens begründet sich vorwiegend aus Methoden der qualitativen Sozialforschung (teilnehmende Beobachtung, schriftlichen Befragung, linguistische Analyse der Chatbeiträge sowie fokussierte Interviews im Rahmen von drei Fallstudien). Im Sinne der Handlungs- und Aktionsforschung liegt das Forschungsinteresse zum einen in der Entwicklung der Zukunftswerkstatt-online unter besonderer Berücksichtigung der Funktionen, Softwareergonomie, zum anderen hinsichtlich der Frage nach den Möglichkeiten zur kreativen Gestaltung von Lernprozesse. Im Fokus des Interesses stehen daher folgende Forschungsfragen: 1. Wie muss eine Zukunftswerkstatt-online gestaltet werden, um als effektives Problemlöse- und Erschließungsinstrument für offene Möglichkeitsräume zu funktionieren? 2. Was kann eine Zukunftswerkstatt-online hinsichtlich der kommunikativen Aufgaben für Lehrende und Lerngruppen leisten? 3. Welche Lehr-/ Lernvoraussetzungen lassen sich für die Anwendung einer Zukunftswerkstatt-online formulieren? Aufgrund der Auswertungen der o.g. Evaluationsmethoden lassen sich folgende signifikante Aspekte bezüglich des Anregungsgehalts der Zukunftswerkstatt-online benennen: 1. Aspekt der Situiertheit: Die Mischung aus Vorstrukturierung durch die drei Phasen der Methode auf der einen Seiten und den Freiraum hinsichtlich der inhaltlichen Gestaltung wird von den Probanden als positiv und unterstützend für den Lernprozess bewertet. 2. Aspekt der multiplen Perspektive: Mit der Zukunftswerkstatt-online wird eine strukturierte Zusammenarbeit in Gruppen ermöglicht. Problemfelder können somit aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven dargestellt werden. 3. Aspekt des Lernens im sozialen Kontext: Der "Community" Gedanke des Internets wird während der Arbeit mit der Zukunftswerkstatt-online gefördert. Es lassen sich drei unterstützende Faktoren hierzu benennen: - Der vorgegebene Interaktionsrahmen der Methode. - Die von den Lernenden gewählte Inhalte. - Die Auswahl der Kooperationspartner. Hinsichtlich der Förderung von Schlüsselkompetenzen kann die Zukunftswerkstatt-online folgendes leisten: Förderung der fachlichen Kompetenz: Die Zukunftswerkstatt-online stärkt mediale Kompetenzen der Teilnehmer. Darüber hinaus werden durch die Möglichkeiten der Dokumentation des Diskussionsverlaufs und der Speicherung von Daten, Informationen nachhaltige gesichert. Förderung der sozialen Kompetenz: Aufgrund der Arbeit in einem weites gehenden hierarchiefreien Raum wird vernetzten Arbeiten und synergetischer Austausch der Teilnehmer ermöglicht. Förderung der personalen Kompetenz: Die kommunikativen Kompetenzen werden gefördert sowie die Entwicklung eines Methodenrepertoires für die Gestaltung von Gruppenprozessen in eigenen Handlungsfeldern der Teilnehmer ausgebaut. Folgende Voraussetzung lassen sich aus den Forschungsergebnissen ableiten, die bei der Durchführung einer Zukunftswerkstatt-online unterstützend wirken: Für Lernende: - Grundlagen der Computer und Internetkompetenz, - Hohe Selbstlernkompetenz, - Kompetenzen zur Kooperation, - Schriftsprachliche Kompetenz und - Einbringung einer persönlich bedeutsamen Problemstellung. Für Lehrende: - Kompetenzen in der Organisation/Administration von Lernprozessen, - Unterstützung der Lernprozesse durch klare Anweisungen und Hilfestellungen bei der Bewältigung von Problemen. Zusammenfassend lässt sich feststellen, dass die Zukunftswerkstatt-online den aktiven Umgang, die Auseinandersetzung und die Konstruktion von handlungsorientiertem Wissen fördert. Darüber hinaus eröffnet sie in einem noch relativ neuen Wirkungsfeld der Pädagogik Möglichkeiten, neue Formen des Lehren und Lernens im virtuellen Raum zu erproben, zu evaluieren und perspektivisch weiter zu entwickeln.

As universities are offering tuition through online learning environments, “onsite students” in higher education are increasingly becoming “online learners”. Since the medium for learning (and teaching) online is a digital environment, and at a distance, the role taken by students and teaching staff is different to the one these are used to in onsite, traditional settings. Therefore the Role of the Online Learner, presented in this paper, is key to onsite students who are to become online learners. This role consists of five competences: Operational, Cognitive, Collaborative, Self-directing, Course-specific. These five competences integrate the various skills, strategies, attitudes and awareness that make up the role of online learner, which learners use to perform efficiently online. They also make up the basis of a tutorial for would-be online learners, going over the Role of the Online Learner by means of concepts, examples and reflective activities. This tutorial, available to students in the author’s website, is also helpful to teaching and counselling staff in guiding their students to become online learners

Scitable is an open online teaching/learning portal combining high quality educational articles authored by editors at NPG with technology-based community features to fuel a global exchange of scientific insights, teaching practices, and study resources. Scitable currently contains articles in the field of genetics, and is intended for college undergraduate faculty and students. Future plans involve extension of Scitable to other fields within the life sciences, as well as to other audiences. Scitable brings together a library of scientific overviews with a worldwide community of scientists, researchers, teachers and students. Nature Education is a new division of Nature Publishing Group devoted to facilitating high quality, innovative, accessible science education in all countries of the world.

Speaker: Lynda Hardman Organiser: Time: 04/02/2015 12:30-13:30 Location: B32/3077 Abstract The challenges of addressing gender inequalities in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine is widely acknowledged. We currently hold a bronze award and ECS is one of many academic units in the University which has gained Athena Swan Charter status. In this seminar, Professor Lynda Hardman, Chair of the Informatics Europe working group "Women in Informatics Research and Education” will be explaining the causes of issued underlying gender inequality and constructive routes to addressing this important agenda. In undertaking to commit to an action plan which is a prerequisite of gaining charter status, the University or academic department agreed to accept and incorporate the Athena Swan six principles listed below: * To address gender inequalities requires commitment and action from everyone, at all levels of the organisation * To tackle the unequal representation of women in science requires changing cultures and attitudes across the organisation * The absence of diversity at management and policy-making levels has broad implications which the organisation will examine * The high loss rate of women in science is an urgent concern which the organisation will address * The system of short-term contracts has particularly negative consequences for the retention and progression of women in science, which the organisation recognises * There are both personal and structural obstacles to women making the transition from PhD into a sustainable academic career in science, which require the active consideration of the organisation. This seminar is designed to provide an opportunity to explore these issues NOTE: Lynda will be basing here talk on some of the work she directed as chair of the "Women in Informatics Research and Education” working group. The purpose of the working group is to actively participate and promote actions that contribute to improve gender balance in Information and Communication Sciences and Technologies. The first concrete result of the working group's activities was the publication of the booklet "More Women in Informatics Research and Education" in 2013. The booklet is a compact source of clear and simple best practices to deans and heads of departments that aim to increase the participation of women as both students and employees in their institutions. Many tips included were also inspired by colleagues already in leading positions who have already implemented actions in their institutions to attract more women and ensure their continued participation in the organization at commensurate ratios with their male colleagues. The booklet is endorsed by the European Commission and features a foreword by Neelie Kroes, Vice-President of the European Commission, responsible for the Digital Agenda.

En este trabajo se realiza una descripción y análisis del esquema de funcionamiento detrás del emergente mercado de las compras colectivas y los cupones online desde una perspectiva tanto teórica como empírica. Inicialmente, se desarrolla un marco teórico teniendo en cuenta elementos de: teoría económica, e-marketing y comercio electrónico en los que se basa éste mercado. Posteriormente, se muestra el proyecto de implementación de una plataforma virtual y un sistema de incentivos basado en el esquema de cupones online desarrollado por el autor para la franquicia de tarjetas de crédito Diners Club International del Banco Davivienda S.A. en Colombia
