The paper describes a procedure for accurately and speedily calibrating tanks used for the chemical processing of nuclear materials. The procedure features the use of (1) precalibrated vessels certified to deliver known volumes of liquid, (2) calibrated linear measuring devices, and (3) a digital computer for manipulating data and producing printed calibration information. Calibration records of the standards are traceable to primary standards. Logic is incorporated in the computer program to accomplish curve fitting and perform the tests to accept or to reject the calibration, based on statistical, empirical, and report requirements. This logic is believed to be unique.

An instrument that can continuously monitor air for tritium has been developed. It utilizes a flow type ionization chamber and a vibrating reed electrometer. A response of double normal background is produced by 9.4 x 10⁻⁵ [mu]c H³/cc air; the presently accepted MPC is 2.0 x 10⁻⁵ [mu]c H³/cc air. Its operation is completely automatic.

This report describes part of a program carried out by the Rocky Flats Division of the Dow Chemical Company for the Division of Nuclear Materials Management (Atomic Energy Commission), to develop procedures and containers which would permit the shipment of plutonium oxide without shipper-receiver discrepancies. This report covers the design, testing and evaluation of plutonium oxide shipping packages.

A preliminary survey of the plutonium rich corners of the Pu-Al-Ga, Pu-Zn-Ga and Pu-Ce-Ga systems was made. Emphasis was placed on the determination of how well the delta phase of plutonium was stabilized by these alloy additions.

An electrical discharge is used as a trap for a diffusion pump using DC-704 silicone pump fluid. The discharge cracks the pump fluid vapor thus taking it out of the system. In the process much hydrogen and some other lighter gases are evolved.
The total hemispherical emittance of polished and of oxidized alpha plutonium : preliminary report /
Resumo:
The total hemispherical emittance of polished 99.66 w/o plutonium was determined to be 0.37 at 88.7° and 89.0°C. The emittance of polished sample was measured after oxidation in a humid air atmosphere for 24, 66, and 168 hours. Emittances of 0.47, 0.54, and 0.70 were obtained. The apparatus was used to determine a total hemispherical emittance for candle soot of 0.96. Total errors were estimated to be less than ±3%.
