Changes in heart rate (f(H)) and cloacal ventilation frequency (f(C)) were investigated in the Fitzroy turtle, Rheodytes leukops, under normoxic (17.85 kPa) and hypoxic (3.79 kPa) conditions at 25 degrees C. Given R. leukops' high reliance on aquatic respiration via the cloacal bursae, the objective Of this Study was to examine the effect of varying aquatic PO2 levels upon the expression of a bradycardia in a freely diving, bimodally respiring turtle. In normoxia, mean diving f(H) and f(C) for R. leukops remained constant with increasing submergence length, indicating that a bradycardia failed to develop during extended dives of up to 3 days. Alternatively, exposure to aquatic hypoxia resulted in the expression of a bradycardia as recorded by a decreasing mean diving f(H) with increasing dive duration. The observed bradycardia is attributed to a hypoxic-induced metabolic depression, possibly facilitated by a concurrent decrease in f(C). Results suggest that R. leukops alters its strategy from aquatic O-2 extraction via cloacal respiration in normoxia to O-2 conservation when exposed to aquatic hypoxia for the purpose of extending dive duration. Upon surfacing, a significant tachycardia was observed for R. leukops regardless of aquatic PO2, presumably functioning to rapidly equilibrate blood and tissue gas tensions with alveolar gas to reduce surfacing duration.

In aquatic vertebrates that acquire oxygen aerially dive duration scales positively with body mass, i.e. larger animals can dive for longer periods, however in bimodally respiring animals the relationship between dive duration and body mass is unclear. In this study we investigated the relationships between body size, aquatic respiration, and dive duration in the bimodally respiring turtle, Elseya albagula. Under normoxic conditions, dive duration was found to be independent of body mass. The dive durations of smaller turtles were equivalent to that of larger individuals despite their relatively smaller oxygen stores and higher mass specific metabolic rates. Smaller turtles were able to increase their dive duration through the use of aquatic respiration. Smaller turtles had a relatively higher cloacal bursae surface area than larger turtles, which allowed them to extract a relatively larger amount of oxygen from the water. By removing the ability to respire aquatically (hypoxic conditions), the dive duration of the smaller turtles significantly decreased restoring the normal positive relationship between body size and dive duration that is seen in other air-breathing vertebrates.

The Australian lungfish Neoceratodus forsteri (Dipnoi) is an ancient fish that has a unique phylogenetic relationship among the basal Sarcopterygii. Here we examine the ultrastructure, histochemistry, and distribution of the retinal photoreceptors using a combination of light and electron microscopy in order to determine the characteristics of the photoreceptor layer in this living fossil. Similar proportions of rods (53%) and cones (47%) reveal that N. forsteri optimizes both scotopic and photopic sensitivity according to its visual demands. Scotopic sensitivity is optimized by a tapetum lucidum and extremely large rods (18.62 +/- 2.68 mu m ellipsoid diameter). Photopic sensitivity is optimized with a theoretical spatial resolving power of 3.28 +/- 0.66 cycles degree(-1), which is based on the spacing of at least three different cone types: a red cone containing a red oil droplet, a yellow cone containing a yellow ellipsoidal pigment, and a colorless cone containing multiple clear oil droplets. Topographic analysis reveals a heterogeneous distribution of all photoreceptor types, with peak cone densities predominantly found in temporal retina (6,020 rods MM 2, 4,670 red cones mm(-2), 900 yellow cones mm(-2), and 320 colorless cones mm(-2)), but ontogenetic changes in distribution are revealed. Spatial resolving power and the diameter of all photoreceptor types (except yellow cones) increases linearly with growth. The presence of at least three morphological types of cones provides the potential for color vision, which could play a role in the clearer waters of its freshwater environment.

Microcompression specimens, 10–15 µm in diameter by 20–30 µm in height, were produced from individual parent grains in a polycrystalline U–13 at.%Nb shape-memory alloy using the focused ion beam technique. The specimens were tested in a nanoindentation instrument with a flat diamond tip to investigate stress–strain behavior as a function of crystallographic orientation. The results are in qualitative agreement with a single-crystal accommodation strain (Bain strain) model of the shape-memory effect for this alloy.

We study soliton solutions of the path-averaged propagation equation governing the transmission of dispersion-managed (DM) optical pulses in the (practical) limit when residual dispersion and nonlinearity only slightly affect the pulse dynamics over one compensation period. In the case of small dispersion map strengths, the averaged pulse dynamics is governed by a perturbed form of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation; applying a perturbation theory – elsewhere developed – based on inverse scattering theory, we derive an analytic expression for the envelope of the DM soliton. This expression correctly predicts the power enhancement arising from the dispersion management. Theoretical results are verified by direct numerical simulations.

The range of existence and the properties of two essentially different chaotic attractors found in a model of nonlinear convection-driven dynamos in rotating spherical shells are investigated. A hysteretic transition between these attractors is established as a function of the rotation parameter t. Mechanical physiological pulsations are movements of a body surface incited by the movements of muscles in organs inside the body. Here we demonstrate the use of long-period grating sensors in the detection of cardio-vascular pulsations (CVP), in particular apex and carotid pulsations. To calibrate the sensors, we use a mechanical tool designed specifically to measure the sensor response to a localized perturbation at different grating curvatures as working points. From the data we infer the amplitude of the CVP. Together with the electrophysiological signals, the CVP signals obtained from the sensors can provide significant information on heart function which is inaccessible to the electrocardiogram. The low cost and easy handling of the fibre sensors increase their prospects to become the sensors of choice for novel diagnostic devices. © 2013 The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.

The surface residual stresses in SiC particle-reinforced Al matrix composites are measured using a recently developed nanoindentation technique. The tensile biaxial residual stress in Al is found to increase with the particle concentration. The stress magnitudes are in reasonable agreement with those from numerical modeling.

Mechanistic models based on geometrically necessary dislocations are re-examined in light of recent experiments exhibiting the indentation size effect. A simple method is developed to combine work hardening, solid solution hardening, radiation hardening and size effects. Artykuł dotyczy korpusu tekstów dla dzieci, który został utworzony na potrzeby projektu Graphogame-Fluent*, poświęconego ocenie skuteczności komputerowych gier edukacyjnych w terapii trudności w czytaniu (Szczerbiński et al. 2012). W artykule poruszono zagadnienia związane z przygotowaniem korpusu, przy czym najwięcej uwagi poświęcono podziałowi korpusu na sylaby (Śledziński 2010). W publikacji przedstawiono kilka istotnych pojęć lingwistycznych – definicje: sylaby, sonorności i skali sonorności. Na podstawie dostępnych definicji nie da się przeprowadzić jednoznacznego podziału na sylaby. Problem ten w szczególności dotyczy języka polskiego – ze względu na występujące licznie wieloelementowe grupy spółgłoskowe o strukturze niespotykanej w innych językach. Na potrzeby praktyczne można jednak zastosować określone procedury i rozwiązania umowne. W artykule zaproponowano dwuetapową procedurę sylabizacji. Pierwszy etap obejmuje wyznaczenie kategorii zbitek spółgłoskowych oraz ustalenie dla tych kategorii wstępnego podziału opartego na zasadzie sonorności (jeżeli jest to możliwe). Etap drugi związany jest z ustaleniem umownych szczegółowych reguł podziału dla konkretnych zbitek spółgłoskowych przy uwzględnieniu wskazówek, które również zostały omówione w artykule.

Fossil associations from the middle and upper Eocene (Bartonian and Priabonian) sedimentary succession of the Pamplona Basin are described. This succession was accumulated in the western part of the South Pyrenean peripheral foreland basin and extends from deep-marine turbiditic (Ezkaba Sandstone Formation) to deltaic (Pamplona Marl, Ardanatz Sandstone and Ilundain Marl formations) and marginal marine deposits (Gendulain Formation). The micropalaeontological content is high. It is dominated by foraminifera, and common ostracods and other microfossils are also present. The fossil ichnoasssemblages include at least 23 ichnogenera and 28 ichnospecies indicative of Nereites, Cruziana, Glossifungites and ?Scoyenia-Mermia ichnofacies. Body macrofossils of 78 taxa corresponding to macroforaminifera, sponges, corals, bryozoans, brachiopods, annelids, molluscs, arthropods, echinoderms and vertebrates have been identified. Both the number of ichnotaxa and of species (e. g. bryozoans, molluscs and condrichthyans) may be considerably higher. Body fossil assemblages are comparable to those from the Eocene of the Nord Pyrenean area (Basque Coast), and also to those from the Eocene of the west-central and eastern part of South Pyrenean area (Aragon and Catalonia). At the European scale, the molluscs assemblages seem endemic from the Pyrenean area, although several Tethyan (Italy and Alps) and Northern elements (Paris basin and Normandy) have been recorded. Palaeontological data of studied sedimentary units fit well with the shallowing process that throughout the middle and late Eocene occurs in the area, according to the sedimentological and stratigraphical data.

Este artículo analiza la eclosión mediática y política del partido político Podemos durante sus primeros meses de vida tras las elecciones europeas. Comprobaremos si el interés que despierta el partido en sus inicios, en intención de voto, se traslada a las audiencias de televisión con dos hipótesis que muestran la estrategia comunicativa de Podemos y su repercusión: la H1 afirma que los programas en los que participa Pablo Iglesias obtienen mayor audiencia de la habitual y la H2 plantea que la apuesta del líder de Podemos por el medio televisivo es muy superior y con mejores resultados con respecto a los partidos clásicos. Los resultados demuestran que los programas en los que participa (N=14) crecen un 62% y baten récord de audiencia. Concluimos que la estrategia comunicativa de Podemos da importancia a la televisión, además de continuar con la estrategia en redes aprendida en el 15M.
