Time correlation functions of current fluctuations were calculated by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations in order to investigate sound waves of high wavevectors in the glass-forming liquid Ca(NO3)(2)center dot 4H(2)O. Dispersion curves, omega(k), were obtained for longitudinal (LA) and transverse acoustic (TA) modes, and also for longitudinal optic (LO) modes. Spectra of LA modes calculated by MD simulations were modeled by a viscoelastic model within the memory function framework. The viscoelastic model is used to rationalize the change of slope taking place at k similar to 0.3 angstrom(-1) in the omega(k) curve of acoustic modes. For still larger wavevectors, mixing of acoustic and optic modes is observed. Partial time correlation functions of longitudinal mass currents were calculated separately for the ions and the water molecules. The wavevector dependence of excitation energies of the corresponding partial LA modes indicates the coexistence of a relatively stiff subsystem made of cations and anions, and a softer subsystem made of water molecules. Electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions govern most of the properties of supramolecular systems, which is the reason determining the degree of ionization of macromolecules has become crucial for many applications. In this paper, we show that highresolution ultraviolet spectroscopy (VUV) can be used to determine the degree of ionization and its effect on the electronic excitation energies of layer-by-layer (LbL) films of poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and poly[1-[4-(3-carboxy-4 hydroxyphenylazo)- benzene sulfonamido]-1,2-ethanediyl, sodium salt] (PAZO). A full assignment of the VUV peaks of these polyelectrolytes in solution and in cast or LbL films could be made, with their pH dependence allowing us to determine the p'K IND. a' using the Henderson-Hasselbach equation. The p'K IND. a' for PAZO increased from ca. 6 in solution to ca. 7.3 in LbL films owing to the charge transfer from PAH. Significantly, even using solutions at a fixed pH for PAH, the amount adsorbed on the LbL films still varied with the pH of the PAZO solutions due to these molecular-level interactions. Therefore, the procedure based on a comparison of VUV spectra from solutions and films obtained under distinct conditions is useful to determine the degree of dissociation of macromolecules, in addition to permitting interrogation of interface effects in multilayer films.

Currently, the contributions of Starlette, Stella, and AJISAI are not taken into account when defining the International Terrestrial Reference Frame (ITRF), despite the large amount of data collected in a long time-span. Consequently, the SLR-derived parameters and the SLR part of the ITRF are almost exclusively defined by LAGEOS-1 and LAGEOS-2. We investigate the potential of combining the observations to several SLR satellites with different orbital characteristics. Ten years of SLR data are homogeneously processed using the development version 5.3 of the Bernese GNSS Software. Special emphasis is put on orbit parameterization and the impact of LEO data on the estimation of the geocenter coordinates, Earth rotation parameters, Earth gravity field coefficients, and the station coordinates in one common adjustment procedure. We find that the parameters derived from the multi-satellite solutions are of better quality than those obtained in single satellite solutions or solutions based on the two LAGEOS satellites. A spectral analysis of the SLR network scale w.r.t. SLRF2008 shows that artifacts related to orbit perturbations in the LAGEOS-1/2 solutions, i.e., periods related to the draconitic years of the LAGEOS satellites, are greatly reduced in the combined solutions.

Hyalotekite, a framework silicate of composition (Ba,Pb,K)(4)(Ca,Y)(2)Si-8(B,Be)(2) (Si,B)(2)O28F, is found in relatively high-temperature(greater than or equal to 500 degrees C) Mn skarns at Langban, Sweden, and peralkaline pegmatites at Dara-i-Pioz, Tajikistan. A new paragenesis at Dara-i-Pioz is pegmatite consisting of the Ba borosilicates leucosphenite and tienshanite, as well as caesium kupletskite, aegirine, pyrochlore, microcline and quartz. Hyalotekite has been partially replaced by barylite and danburite. This hyalotekite contains 1.29-1.78 wt.% Y2O3, equivalent to 0.172-0.238 Y pfu or 8-11% Y on the Ca site; its Pb/(Pb+Ba) ratio ranges 0.36-0.44. Electron microprobe F contents of Langban and Dara-i-Pioz hyalotekite range 1.04-1.45 wt.%, consistent with full occupancy of the F site. A new refinement of the structure factor data used in the original structural determination of a Langban hyalotekite resulted in a structural formula, (Pb1.96Ba1.86K0.18)Ca-2(B1.76Be0.24)(Si1.56B0.44)Si8O28F, consistent with chemical data and all cations with positive-definite thermal parameters, although with a slight excess of positive charge (+57.14 as opposed to the ideal +57.00). An unusual feature of the hyalotekite framework is that 4 of 28 oxygens are non-bridging; by merging these 4 oxygens into two, the framework topology of scapolite is obtained. The triclinic symmetry of hyalotekite observed at room temperature is obtained from a hypothetical tetragonal parent structure via a sequence of displacive phase transitions. Some of these transitions are associated with cation ordering, either Pb-Ba ordering in the large cation sites, or B-Be and Si-B ordering on tetrahedral sites. Others are largely displacive but affect the coordination of the large cations (Pb, Ba, K, Ca). High-resolution electron microscopy suggests that the undulatory extinction characteristic of hyalotekite is due to a fine mosaic microstructure. This suggests that at least one of these transitions occurs in nature during cooling, and that it is first order with a large volume change. A diffuse superstructure observed by electron diffraction implies the existence of a further stage of short-range cation ordering which probably involves both (Pb,K)-Ba and (BeSi,BB)-BSi.

This article gives details of our proposal to replace ordinary chiral SU(3)L×SU(3)R perturbation theory χPT3 by three-flavor chiral-scale perturbation theory χPTσ. In χPTσ, amplitudes are expanded at low energies and small u,d,s quark masses about an infrared fixed point αIR of three-flavor QCD. At αIR, the quark condensate ⟨q¯q⟩vac≠0 induces nine Nambu-Goldstone bosons: π,K,η, and a 0++ QCD dilaton σ. Physically, σ appears as the f0(500) resonance, a pole at a complex mass with real part ≲ mK. The ΔI=1/2 rule for nonleptonic K decays is then a consequence of χPTσ, with a KSσ coupling fixed by data for γγ→ππ and KS→γγ. We estimate RIR≈5 for the nonperturbative Drell-Yan ratio R=σ(e+e−→hadrons)/σ(e+e−→μ+μ−) at αIR and show that, in the many-color limit, σ/f0 becomes a narrow qq¯ state with planar-gluon corrections. Rules for the order of terms in χPTσ loop expansions are derived in Appendix A and extended in Appendix B to include inverse-power Li-Pagels singularities due to external operators. This relates to an observation that, for γγ channels, partial conservation of the dilatation current is not equivalent to σ-pole dominance.

Stimulation of LM5 cells with the phorbol ester 4$\beta$-phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA), causes a 2-4 fold sensitization of hormonally-stimulated adenylyl cyclase (AC) activity. This effect is thought to be due to protein kinase C (PKC)-mediated phosphorylation of either G$\sb{\rm i}$ or the catalytic subunit of AC. PKC are components of the phosphatidylinositol-4,5-bisphosphate phospholipase C (PIP$\sb2$-PLC) pathway. The currently accepted model of this pathway is that its activation by an agonist results in the production of inositol 1,4,5-triphosphate (IP$\sb3$) which causes Ca$\sp{++}$ mobilization, and 1,2-diacylglycerols (DAG) which activate PKC. Based on this model, we predicted that stimulation of purinergic and muscarinic receptors with the agonists ATP and carbachol (CCh), respectively in the LM5 cells, should sensitize AC. Surprisingly we found that only stimulation of the purinergic receptors in these cells caused a sensitization of PGE$\sb1$-stimulated AC measured in cell-free assays.^ We hypothesized that ATP-and CCh-stimulated differential DAG production contributes to the effectiveness of these two agonists to sensitize PGE$\sb1$-stimulated AC activity. To test this hypothesis directly, we performed a combined high-performance liquid chromatography and gas-liquid chromatography analysis of the DAG produced in the LM5 cells in response to stimulation with ATP and CCh.^ We found that both ATP and CCh increased levels of 23 species of DAG. Relative to the control levels (0.261 nmol DAG/100 nmol phospholipid) the CCh-induced increase in DAG levels was 280% (0.738 $\pm$ 0.051 nmol DAG/100 nmol phospholipid) whereas the ATP-induced levels increased 180% (0.441 t 0.006 nmol DAG/100 nmol phospholipid). Neither agonist created new species or eliminated the existing ones. The major species which comprised $\approx$50% of the total cellular DAG in all of the groups were 16:0-18:1, 18:0-18:1, 18:1-18:1, and 18:0-20:4. CCh was more effective than ATP at stimulating these major DAG species.^ It is concluded that factor(s) other than DAG contribute(s) to the differences between ATP-and CCh-sensitization of PGE$\sb1$-stimulated AC activity in the LM5 cells. ^

Arctic sea ice is declining rapidly, making it vital to understand the importance of different types of sea ice for ice-dependent species such as polar bears Ursus maritimus. In this study we used GPS telemetry (25 polar bear tracks obtained in Svalbard, Norway, during spring) and high-resolution synthetic aperture radar (SAR) sea-ice data to investigate fine-scale space use by female polar bears. Space use patterns differed according to reproductive state; females with cubs of the year (COYs) had smaller home ranges and used fast-ice areas more frequently than lone females. First-passage time (FPT) analysis revealed that females with COYs displayed significantly longer FPTs near (<10 km) glacier fronts than in other fast-ice areas; lone females also increased their FPTs in such areas, but they also frequently used drifting pack ice. These results clearly demonstrate the importance of fast-ice areas, in particular close to glacier fronts, especially for females with COYs. Access to abundant and predictable prey (ringed seal pups), energy conservation and reluctance to cross large open water areas are possible reasons for the observed patterns. However, glacier fronts are retracting in Svalbard, and declines in land-fast ice have been notable over the past decade. The eventual disappearance of these important habitats might become critical for the survival of polar bear cubs in Svalbard and other regions with similar habitat characteristics. Given the relatively small size of many fast-ice areas in Svalbard, the results observed in this study would not have been revealed using less accurate location data or lower-resolution sea-ice data.
