Dispersion of photoluminescent rare earth metal complexes in polymer matrices is of great interest due to the possibility of avoiding the saturation of the photoluminescent signal. The possibility of using a natural ionic conducting polymer matrix was investigated in this study. Samples of agar-based electrolytes containing europium picrate were prepared and characterized by physical and chemical analyses. The FTIR spectra indicated strong interaction of agar O-H and 3.6-anhydro-galactose C-O groups with glycerol and europium picrate. The DSC analyses revealed no glass transition temperature of the samples in the -60 to 250 degrees C range. From the thermogravimetry (TG), a thermal stability of the samples of up to 180 degrees C was stated. The membranes were subjected to ionic conductivity measurement, which provided the values of 2.6 x 10(-6) S/cm for the samples with acetic acid and 1.6 x 10(-5) S/cm for the samples without acetic acid. Moreover, the temperature-dependent ionic conductivity measurements revealed both Arrhenius and VTF models of the conductivity depending on the sample. Surface visualization through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) demonstrated good uniformity. The samples were also applied in small electrochromic devices and showed good electrochemical stability. The present work confirmed that these materials may perform as satisfactory multifunctional component layers in the field of electrochemical devices. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A general strategy for electrochemically induced assembly of coordination metallopolymers is demonstrated using the tritopic bridging [Ru-3(mu(3)-O)(CH3COO)(6)(pytpy)(3)](+) cluster complex, where pytpy is the 4'-(4-pyridyl)-2,2':6',2 ''-terpyridine ligand, and iron(III) ions. The concept of such an electrochemically induced coordinative assembly was proven exploring the large difference in the [Fe(pytpy)2 complex formation constants depending on the iron ion oxidation state. Much more stable bridging complexes are formed in the presence of Fe(II) in contrast to Fe(III) ions. The build-up of electrochemically active films on FTO electrodes was confirmed by the growth of the corresponding voltammetric peaks concomitantly with the rise of typical triruthenium cluster and [Fe(pytpy)(2)](2+) complex absorption bands. The metallopolymer was constituted by agglomerates of more or less fused tape like structures, exhibiting large voids and pinholes, as revealed by SEM and AFM images. The adhesion/deposition on FTO was improved by functionalizing the surface with TES-tpy and HOOC-tpy, which increased the surface coverage up to 80%, as estimated by impedance spectroscopy. n this work, three Cypraea species (C. talpa, C. tigris and C. zebra) were exhaustively studied. The shells have been separated in the structural layers. The mineralogy, ultra- and micro-structure of each layer were analyzed by Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy (CLSM), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), X-Ray Diffractometry (XRD) and Raman Spectroscopy (RS). The presence of biologically relevant trace metals (Mn, Co, Fe, Zn, Cr, etc.) has been investigated using Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis (INAA) and Inductively Coupled Plasma – Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) as detection tool. A new method has been developed and optimized to extract and analyze the soluble organic matrix (SOM) of the shell. Although the molecular nature of the SOM is not really known, it contains at least large protein fraction, if not only consists of proteins. The extracted matrices were compared between layers and species using Size Exclusion High Performance Liquid Chromatography coupled with Ultra Violet Spectrometry (SE-HPLC-UV), Gel electrophoresis (GE) and protein quantification tests. For the first time to our knowledge the association of trace elements to the protein in the SOM of the shell was studied using hyphenated on line as well as combined off line techniques and validated through inter-comparison tests between the different methods applied. Interesting correlations between the trace element concentration, the microstructure and the protein content were directly and indirectly detected. The metals Cu, Ni, Co and Zn have shown to bind to the SOM extracted from C. talpa, C. tigris and C. zebra shells. Within the conclusions of this work it was demonstrated that these protein-metal-complexes (or metal containing proteins) change from one layer to the other and are different between the three snails analyzed. In addition, the complexes are clearly related only to certain protein fractions of the SOM, and not to the whole SOM observed. These fractions and show not to be very metal-specific (i.e. some of these fractions bind two or three different metals).

Studies of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons have shown that the overall size, periphery, and functionalization of PAHs are crucial parameters which significantly alter their electronic structure and chemical reactivity. Therefore, the major direction of this thesis is the synthesis and characterization of extended PAHs: (i) with different functional groups improving their processability, (ii) with different periphery changing their chemical reactivity, (iii) with inclusions of different metal ions, which influence their physical properties. • The cyclodehydrogenation reaction has been proposed for to synthesise polyphenylene ribbons with preplanarized (dibenzo[e,l]pyrene) moieties in the aromatic core with up to 10 nm linear size. The synthetic strategy employed is discussed in Chapter 2 and is based on stoichiometrically controlled DIELS-ALDER cycloaddition. All molecules possessed very good solubility in common organic solvents allowing their characterization by standard analytical techniques. • A new concept was developed to extend PAH’s core. Here the introduction of “zigzag” sites, discussed in Chpater 3 was shown to lower the HOMO-LUMO gap and to result in higher chemical reactivities. This allowed, in Chapters 3, 4 and 5, further functionalization of PAH and enlargement of their aromatic cores up to 224 atoms. Despite the size of these novel molecules, extraordinary solubilities in common organic solvents were obtained due to distortions from planarity of the aromatic cores by bulky tert-butyl groups, which hampered the usually very pronounced aggregation tendency of extended π-systems. All extended PAHs posses the small HOMO-LUMO gap together with good electron affinities making them potential candidates for application in organic FETs. • Another alternative synthetic route has been proposed to obtain extended the metal-PAH complexes. Using the quinoxaline methodology in Chapter 5 three new phenanthroline ligands (up to 60 skeletal atoms) have been synthesized and characterized. Four different (Ru(II), Cu(II) and Pt(II)) complexes were synthesized, allowing to construct a range of large metal complexes by varying the metal as well as the number and nature of ligands.

(M=Fe(II), Co(III), Mo(IV), Ru(II)) undrndodecanukleare Komplexe vom Typ [(L2Fe(III)NC)5Fe(II)CNCo(III)(CNFe(III)L2)5]4+. L2= Bis(R2,3,4 -salicylidenaminoalkyl-R1-amin. Thermischen Spincrossover und LIESST zeigen [3,3/N-H/Sal-H/Fe/Co]; [3,3/N-H/Sal-H/Fe/Ru]; [3,3/N-H/sal-H/Fe/Mo]; [3,3/N-H/Sal-H/Fe/W]; FeII(pmea)(SCN)2; thermischen Spinübergang zeigt [2,3/N-H/Sal-H/Fe/Fe-Co].

Cell-based therapies and tissue engineering initiatives are gathering clinical momentum for next-generation treatment of tissue deficiencies. By using gravity-enforced self-assembly of monodispersed primary cells, we have produced adult and neonatal rat cardiomyocyte-based myocardial microtissues that could optionally be vascularized following coating with human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). Within myocardial microtissues, individual cardiomyocytes showed native-like cell shape and structure, and established electrochemical coupling via intercalated disks. This resulted in the coordinated beating of microtissues, which was recorded by means of a multi-electrode complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor microchip. Myocardial microtissues (microm3 scale), coated with HUVECs and cast in a custom-shaped agarose mold, assembled to coherent macrotissues (mm3 scale), characterized by an extensive capillary network with typical vessel ultrastructures. Following implantation into chicken embryos, myocardial microtissues recruited the embryo's capillaries to functionally vascularize the rat-derived tissue implant. Similarly, transplantation of rat myocardial microtissues into the pericardium of adult rats resulted in time-dependent integration of myocardial microtissues and co-alignment of implanted and host cardiomyocytes within 7 days. Myocardial microtissues and custom-shaped macrotissues produced by cellular self-assembly exemplify the potential of artificial tissue implants for regenerative medicine.

Ureides are compounds, which essentially incorporate urea as a substructural component either in open or cyclic form. Ureido derivatives are one of the oldest classes of bioactives, widely used as antiinfective agents. Several of these compounds, including aminoquinuride, aminocarbalide, imidurea, cloflucarban, nitrofurazone, urosulfan, viomycin are used in clinical situations. One of the ureides, the triclocarban is compulsorily used as antibacterial agent in cleansing and disinfecting solutions in hospital, household, cosmetics, toys, textile and plastics. It disables the activity of ENR, an enzyme vital for building the cell wall of the bacteria and fungus. Besides, the ureido-penicillins in clinical use there have been several ureido-lactam derivatives which have been reported to exhibit significant antibacterial activity. A urea containing dipeptide TAN-1057A isolated from Flexibacter spp. has potent bioactivity against MRSA. The metal complexes of sulphonyl ureido derivatives are effective antifungal agents by inhibiting the activity of phosphomannose isomerase, a key enzyme in the biosynthesis of yeast cell walls. There have been number of ureides including the cyclic ureas which are potent HIV protease inhibitors and display significant anti-HIV activity. The urea derivative, merimepodip that has been derived using structure based design, is potent inhibitor of IMPDH and is active against Hepatitis-C infection. This review will primarily focus on the significant work reported for this class of compounds including design, synthesis and biological activity.

Cardiolipin (CL) plays a key role in dynamic organization of bacterial and mitochondrial membranes. CL forms membrane domains in bacterial cells, and these domains appear to participate in binding and functional regulation of multi-protein complexes involved in diverse cellular functions including cell division, energy metabolism, and membrane transport. Visualization of CL domains in bacterial cells by the fluorescent dye 10-N-nonyl acridine orange is critically reviewed. Possible mechanisms proposed for CL dynamic localization in bacterial cells are discussed. In the mitochondrial membrane CL is involved in organization of multi-subunit oxidative phosphorylation complexes and in their association into higher order supercomplexes. Evidence suggesting a possible role for CL in concert with ATP synthase oligomers in establishing mitochondrial cristae morphology is presented. Hypotheses on CL-dependent dynamic re-organization of the respiratory chain in response to changes in metabolic states and CL dynamic re-localization in mitochondria during the apoptotic response are briefly addressed.

Chapter 4, “Cyanide Compounds,” illustrates an explosively developing research theme in which the cyanide ligand is used as a linking agent for the designed assembly of polynuclear metal complexes. Syntheses of several basic building blocks, such as K3[Cr(CN)6],Cr(Me3tacn)(CN)3,K4[Mo(CN)8],Na[W(CO)5CN],K[CpFe(CO)(CN)2],[NEt4][Cp*Rh(CN)3],[Fe4(bpy)8(μ-CN)4][PF6]4,. are given here. These units may be used in several ways to construct polynuclear compounds. One approach involves a hexacyanometalate core decorated with peripheral metal centers, e.g., [{Cu(tpa)(CN)}6Fe][ClO4]8. or [Cr{CNNi(tetren)}6][ClO4]9. An octacyanometalate unit can lead to higher nuclearity condensed compounds, as in [Co{Co(MeOH)3}8(μ-CN)30{Mo(CN)3}6]. Alternatively, a cluster core may be substituted with cyano complexes as ligands, as in [PPh4]2[Fe4S4{NCW(CO)5}4]. If there are two cis cyano ligands on the building block, then quadrilateral or square structures often result, as in {CpFe(CO(μ-CN)2Cu(PCy3)}2 and [Fe2Cu2(bpy)6(μ-CN)4][PF6]4 However, if there are three adjacent cyano ligands, then cubic cages may be constructed as in [(CpCo)4(Cp*Rh)4(μ-CN)12][PF6]4.
