Buffered high charge spectrally-peaked proton beams in the relativistic-transparency regime

Spectrally-peaked proton beams of high charge (E_p ≈ 8 MeV, ΔE ≈ 4 MeV, N ≈ 50 nC ) have been observed from the interaction of an intense laser (>10¹⁹Wcm^-2) with ultrathinCHfoils, as measured by spectrally-resolved full beam profiles. These beams are reproducibly generated for foil thicknesses 5-100 nm, and exhibit narrowing divergence with decreasing target thickness down to ≈8° for 5 nm. Simulations demonstrate that the narrow energy spread feature is a result of buffered acceleration of protons. The radiation pressure at the front of the target results in asymmetric sheath fields which permeate throughout the target, causing preferential forward acceleration. Due to their higher chargeto-mass ratio, the protons outrun a carbon plasma driven in the relativistic transparency regime.

Tanzanian scepticism of a militarised East African Federation and underlying military concerns

Attitudes towards a regional military force are of paramount importance when exploring public support for regional integration. Until now, however, scholarly research has not considered the influence of attitudes towards a regional military mechanism in the sub-Saharan African context. Using Afrobarometer data, we demonstrate that military concerns are vital when exploring Tanzanian attitudes towards the proposed political federation of the East African Community (EAC), the East African Federation (EAF). More specifically, opposition to military cooperation strongly influences Tanzanian scepticism of the EAF. This finding is highly relevant given that referendums in the participating member states must be passed to facilitate political integration. Heightened opposition towards military cooperation raises the possibility of the public rejecting a politically integrated EAC. This poses a potential obstacle to the implementation of joint security policies and crucial mechanisms to provide a more stable region at large. We account for alternative explanations of Tanzanian opinion formation and reflect on the strength of military-orientated concerns for investigating public support for the East African project specifically and regional integration in sub-Saharan Africa more widely.

Unidade de Estudos de Mastites em Pequenos Ruminantes - estudos em ovinos de regime extensivo

A “Unidade de Estudo de Mastites em Pequenos Ruminantes”, formalmente constituída no âmbito do Programa Nacional de Re-equipamento Científico, da Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, vem dar corpo ao trabalho de colaboração de diversas equipas de investigação que se têm debruçado sobre a problemática das infecções intramamárias em pequenos ruminantes, nos seus aspectos de saúde animal, saúde pública veterinária e qualidade e segurança alimentar. Tem como principal objectivo criar condições para o desenvolvimento de trabalhos de investigação e divulgação científica que contribuam para reduzir a prevalência de mastites em pequenos ruminantes e assim melhorar a produção e a qualidade do leite, favorecendo produtores de leite, produtores de queijo e consumidores. Entre os trabalhos já realizados, pela equipa científica, destaca-se o isolamento e identificação de agentes etiológicos de mastite em ovelhas e estudos epidemiológicos relativos a esta afecção, o estudo de factores de virulência nas bactérias mais relevantes, o estudo dos mecanismos de infecção e a resposta imunológica local e sistémica do hospedeiro. O estudo da etiologia e da fisiopatologia da mastite ovina, com o objectivo de compreender a modulação da resposta imunitária da glândula mamária, poderá contribuir para o desenvolvimento de métodos de controlo com base na estimulação da resposta imunitária, alternativos ao uso de antibióticos.

Numerical tools for isogeometric analysis in the nonlinear regime

The present work deals with the development of robust numerical tools for Isogeometric Analysis suitable for problems of solid mechanics in the nonlinear regime. To that end, a new solid-shell element, based on the Assumed Natural Strain method, is proposed for the analysis of thin shell-like structures. The formulation is extensively validated using a set of well-known benchmark problems available in the literature, in both linear and nonlinear (geometric and material) regimes. It is also proposed an alternative formulation which is focused on the alleviation of the volumetric locking pathology in linear elastic problems. In addition, an introductory study in the field of contact mechanics, in the context of Isogeometric Analysis, is also presented, with special focus on the implementation of a the Point-to-Segment algorithm. All the methodologies presented in the current work were implemented in a in-house code, together with several pre- and post-processing tools. In addition, user subroutines for the commercial software Abaqus were also implemented.

Propõe uma abordagem que, para além da identificação e interpretação dos edifícios ainda existentes na região, incide sobre dois estudos de casos apresentados de forma monográfica. Desenvolve-se em torno das questões da encomenda enquanto imagem histórico-social, autoria, formalização de fachadas, distribuição funcional do espaço interior e contexto urbano, buscando a génese formal, numa tentativa de confirmação da sua raiz de filiação erudita.
