This work intends to demonstrate the effect of geometrically non-linear cross-sectional analysis of certain composite beam-based four-bar mechanisms in predicting the three-dimensional warping of the cross-section. The only restriction in the present analysis is that the strains within each elastic body remain small (i.e., this work does not deal with materials exhibiting non-linear constitutive laws at the 3-D level). Here, all component bars of the mechanism are made of fiber-reinforced laminates. They could, in general, be pre-twisted and/or possess initial curvature, either by design or by defect. Each component of the mechanism is modeled as a beam based on geometrically non-linear 3-D elasticity theory. The component problems are thus split into 2-D analyses of reference beam cross-sections and non-linear 1-D analyses along the three beam reference curves. The splitting of the three-dimensional beam problem into two- and one-dimensional parts, called dimensional reduction, results in a tremendous savings of computational effort relative to the cost of three-dimensional finite element analysis, the only alternative for realistic beams. The analysis of beam-like structures made of laminated composite materials requires a much more complicated methodology. Hence, the analysis procedure based on Variational Asymptotic Method (VAM), a tool to carry out the dimensional reduction, is used here. The representative cross-sections of all component bars are analyzed using two different approaches: (1) Numerical Model and (2) Analytical Model. Four-bar mechanisms are analyzed using the above two approaches for Omega = 20 rad/s and Omega = pi rad/s and observed the same behavior in both cases. The noticeable snap-shots of the deformation shapes of the mechanism about 1000 frames are also reported using commercial software (I-DEAS + NASTRAN + ADAMS). The maximum out-of-plane warping of the cross-section is observed at the mid-span of bar-1, bar-2 and bar-3 are 1.5 mm, 250 mm and 1.0 mm, respectively, for t = 0:5 s. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. White-light emitting Dy3+ doped layered BiOCl phosphors were synthesized by the solid state route and their structure was confirmed by the Rietveld refinement method. On substitution of Dy3+ ion to Bi3+-site in BiOCl, the photoluminescence spectra exhibit blue (F-4(9/2) -> H-6(15/2)), yellow (F-4(9/2) -> H-6(13/2)) and red (F-4(9/2) -> H-6(11/2)) emissions which function together to generate white light. It was found that the emission intensity increases up to 9 mol% of Dy3+ and then quenched due to dipole-dipole interaction. Judd-Ofelt theory and radiative properties suggest that the present phosphors have a long lifetime, high quantum efficiency, excellent color purity and better stimulated emission cross-section compared to reported Dy3+ doped compounds. The obtained color chromaticity results are close to the National Television System Committee standard and clearly establish the bright prospects of these phosphors in white luminescence. Experimental investigations on the ignition and combustion stabilization of kerosene with pilot hydrogen in Mach 2.5 airflows were conducted using two test combustors, with cross sections of 30.5 x 30 and 51 x 70 mm, respectively. Various integrated modules, including the combinations of different pilot injection schemes and recessed cavity flameholders with different geometries, were designed and tested. The stagnation pressure of vitiated air varied within the range of 1.1-1.8 NiPa, while the stagnation temperature varied from 1500 to 1900 K. Specifically, effects of the pilot hydrogen injection scheme, cavity geometry, and combustor scaling on the minimally required pilot hydrogen equivalence ratio were systematically examined. Results indicated that the cavity depth and length had significant effects on the ignition and flameholding, whereas the slanted angle of the aft wall was relatively less important. Two cavities in tandem were shown to be a more effective flameholding mechanism than that with a single cavity. The minimally required pilot hydrogen equivalence ratio for kerosene ignition and stable combustion was found to be as low as 0.02. Furthermore, combustion efficiency of 80% was demonstrated to be achievable for kerosene with the simultaneous use of pilot hydrogen and a recessed cavity to promote the ignition and global burning.

The refractive indices of particles and dispersion medium are important parameters in many colloidal experiments using optical techniques, such as turbidity and light scattering measurements. These data are in general wavelength-dependent and may not be available at some wavelengths fitting to the experimental requirement. in this Study we present a novel approach to inversely determine the refractive indices of particles and dispersion medium by examining the consistency of measured extinction cross sections of particles with their theoretical values using a series of trial values of the refractive indices. The colloidal suspension of polystyrene particles dispersed in water was used as an example to demonstrate how this approach works and the data obtained via such a method are compared with those reported in literature, showing a good agreement between both. Furthermore, the factors that affect the accuracy of measurements are discussed. We also present some data of the refractive indices of polystyrene over a range of wavelengths smaller than 400 nm that have been not reported in the available literature. (C) 2008 Elsevier Inc. Our previous studies have shown that the determination of coagulation rate constants by turbidity measurement becomes impossible for a certain operating wavelength (that is, its blind point) because at this wavelength the change in the turbidity of a dispersion completely loses its response to the coagulation process. Therefore, performing the turbidity measurement in the wavelength range near the blind point should be avoided. In this article, we demonstrate that the turbidity measurement of the rate constant for coagulation of a binary dispersion containing particles of two different sizes (heterocoagulation) presents special difficulties because the blind point shifts with not only particle size but also with the component fraction. Some important aspects of the turbidity measurement for the heterocoagulation rate constant are discussed and experimentally tested. It is emphasized that the T-matrix method can be used to correctly evaluate extinction cross sections of doublets formed during the heterocoagulation process, which is the key data determining the rate constant from the turbidity measurement, and choosing the appropriate operating wavelength and component fraction are important to achieving a more accurate rate constant. Finally, a simple scheme in experimentally determining the sensitivity of the turbidity changes with coagulation over a wavelength range is proposed.

A theoretical model is presented to investigate the size-dependent bending elastic properties of a nanobeam with the influence of the surface relaxation and the surface tension taken into consideration. The surface layer and its thickness of a nanostructure are defined unambiguously. A three-dimensional (3D) crystal model for a nanofilm with n layers of relaxed atoms is investigated. The four nonzero elastic constants of the nanofilm are derived, and then the Young's modulus for simple tension is obtained. Using the relation of energy equilibrium, the size-dependent effective elastic modulus and effective flexural rigidity of a nanobeam with two kinds of cross sections are derived, and their dependence on the surface relaxation and the surface tension is analysed.

The extinction cross sections of a system containing two particles are calculated by the T-matrix method, and the results are compared with those of two single particles with single-scattering approximation. The necessity of the correction of the refractive indices of water and polystyrene for different incident wavelengths is particularly addressed in the calculation. By this means, the volume fractions allowed for certain accuracy requirements of single-scattering approximation in the light scattering experiment can be evaluated. The volume fractions calculated with corrected refractive indices are compared with those obtained with fixed refractive indices which have been rather commonly used, showing that fixed refractive indices may cause significant error in evaluating multiple scattering effect. The results also give a simple criterion for selecting the incident wavelength and particle size to avoid the 'blind zone' in the turbidity measurement, where the turbidity change is insensitive to aggregation of two particles.

The short-surface waves generated by a 3-D arbitrarily oscillating body floating onwater are discussed. In the far-field off the body, the phase and the amplitude functions ofthe radiated waves are determined by the ray method. An undetermined constant is includ-ed in the amplitude function. From the result of Ref. [1], the near-field boundary layersolution near the body waterline is obtained. The amplitude of this solution depends on thewhole wall shape of the body and the slope at the body waterline on the cross-sections per-pendicular to the waterline. By matching the far-field solution with the near-field bound-ary layer solution, the undetermined constant in the amplitude function of the far-fieldradiated waves is determined. For the special case of a half-submerged sphere which per-forms vertical oscillating motion, the result obtained in this paper is in agreement withthat of Ref. [ 2 ].

The inducement of interface fracture is crucial to the analysis of interfacial adhesion between coating and substrate. For electroplated coating/metal substrate adhering materials with strong adhesion, interface cracking and coating spalling are difficult to be induced by conventional methods. In this paper an improved bending test named as T-bend test was conducted on a model coating system, i.e. electroplated chromium on a steel substrate. After the test, cross-sections of the coated materials were prepared to compare the failure behaviors under tensile strain and compressive strain induced by T-bend test. And the observation results show that coating cracking, interface cracking and partial spalling appear step by step. Based on experimental results, a new method may be proposed to rank the coated materials with strong inter-facial adhesion. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Data were taken in 1979-80 by the CCFRR high energy neutrino experiment at Fermilab. A total of 150,000 neutrino and 23,000 antineutrino charged current events in the approximate energy range 25 < E_v < 250GeV are measured and analyzed. The structure functions F2 and xF_3 are extracted for three assumptions about σ_L/σ_T:R=0., R=0.1 and R= a QCD based expression. Systematic errors are estimated and their significance is discussed. Comparisons or the X and Q^2 behaviour or the structure functions with results from other experiments are made.

We find that statistical errors currently dominate our knowledge of the valence quark distribution, which is studied in this thesis. xF_3 from different experiments has, within errors and apart from level differences, the same dependence on x and Q^2, except for the HPWF results. The CDHS F_2 shows a clear fall-off at low-x from the CCFRR and EMC results, again apart from level differences which are calculable from cross-sections.

The result for the the GLS rule is found to be 2.83±.15±.09±.10 where the first error is statistical, the second is an overall level error and the third covers the rest of the systematic errors. QCD studies of xF_3 to leading and second order have been done. The QCD evolution of xF_3, which is independent of R and the strange sea, does not depend on the gluon distribution and fits yield

ʌ_(LO) = 88^(+163)_(-78) ^(+113)_(-70) MeV

The systematic errors are smaller than the statistical errors. Second order fits give somewhat different values of ʌ, although α_s (at Q^2_0 = 12.6 GeV^2) is not so different.

A fit using the better determined F_2 in place of xF_3 for x > 0.4 i.e., assuming q = 0 in that region, gives

ʌ_(LO) = 266^(+114)_(-104) ^(+85)_(-79) MeV

Again, the statistical errors are larger than the systematic errors. An attempt to measure R was made and the measurements are described. Utilizing the inequality q(x)≥0 we find that in the region x > .4 R is less than 0.55 at the 90% confidence level.

We have measured the differential cross section for two-body deuteron photodisintegration at center-of-mass angles of 90°, 53° and 37° with photon energies from 1.6 Ge V to 2.8 Ge V. Additional data were taken at θ* = 37° and E_γ = 4.2 GeV. Invariant cross sections at θ* =90° and 53° appear to follow a simple scaling law predicted by constituent counting rules of perturbative QCD, while the cross section at θ* = 37° shows a slower fall-off with photon energy. Angular distributions show increasing forward peaking at higher energies. Agreement with various theoretical predictions based on pQCD and meson-exchange models is discussed.
