The quality factor of microwave resonators miniaturised by virtue of periodic loading is assessed. Five X-band resonators in E-plane technology with different miniaturisation factors have been designed to resonate at approximately the same frequency. The loaded quality factor is extracted from the fractional bandwidth and subsequently employed to estimate the unloaded quality factor. The study reveals that the unloaded quality factor drops approximately linearly with the miniaturisation. Subsequently design guidelines for E-plane filters with periodically loaded resonators are provided by means of an example involving a fifth-order filter. Full-wave simulated and experimental results are presented to validate the study.

A rectangular waveguide-to-microstrip transition operating at G-band is presented. The E-plane probe, used in the transition, is fabricated on semi-insulating gallium arsenide (SI-GaAs) and it is elevated on the substrate. This configuration reduces interaction with semiconductor material. The elevated probe is suitable for direct integration with monolithic microwave integrated circuits. Measured results show S11 better than 210dB between 150 and 200 GHz and S21 ¼ 2 4dB at centre band (180GHz) for two transitions in back-to-back configuration.

Here a self-consistent continuum model is presented for a narrow gap plane-parallel dc glow discharge. The set of governing equations consisting of continuity and momentum equations for positive ions, fast (emitted by the cathode) and slow electrons (generated by fast electron impact ionization) coupled with Poisson's equation is treated by the technique of matched asymptotic expansions. Explicit results are obtained in the asymptotic limit: (chi delta) much less than 1, where chi = e Phi(a)/kT, delta = (r(D)/L)(2) (Phi(a) is the applied voltage, r(D) is the Debye radius) and pL much greater than 1(Hg mm cm), where p is the gas pressure and L is the gap length. In the case of high pressure, the electron energy relaxation length is much smaller than the gap length, and so the local field approximation is valid. The discharge space divides naturally into a cathode fall sheath, a quasineutral plasma region, and an anode fall sheath. The electric potential distribution obtained for each region in a (semi)analytical form is asymptotically matched to the adjoining regions in the region of overlap. Motivated by recent models involving off-centre ignition of Type Ia supernova explosions, we undertake three-dimensional time-dependent radiation transport simulations to investigate the range of bolometric light-curve properties that could be observed from supernovae in which there is a lop-sided distribution of the products from nuclear burning. We consider both a grid of artificial toy models which illustrate the conceivable range of effects and a recent three-dimensional hydrodynamical explosion model. We find that observationally significant viewing angle effects are likely to arise in such supernovae and that these may have important ramifications for the interpretation of the observed diversity of Type Ia supernova and the systematic uncertainties which relate to their use as standard candles in contemporary cosmology. © 2007 RAS.
