Currently, responsible ownership of pets has been widely discussed. In the past, they were brought to our society and it is our duty nowadays to establish this relationship between man and animal. This study aimed at evaluating the level of knowledge of elderly dog owners about responsible ownership with emphasis on control of canine visceral leishmaniasis and at the same time make them aware of the precautions to be taken. An individual questionnaire on the subject was applied to 68 elderly people. They all belong to Nossa Senhora Aparecida Village, located on the suburb of Araçatuba-SP. Along with the interview, veterinary students advised them on the control of canine visceral leishmaniasis, the importance of sterilization in cats and dogs and the responsible ownership, with distribution of informative leaflets. Fecal samples from dogs were collected by the owners and they were sent to the Laboratory of Parasitology and Parasitic Diseases at Odontology Faculty at Araçatuba UNESP to be processed through the Willis-Mollay technique. Anthelmintic were acquired in the project and donated for the treatment of animals tested positive. 56.25% (63/112) out of the total number of dogs examined were females, aged between one and ten years. Only 32.14% (36/112) had access to the streets, 90.18% (101/112) were not castrated and 58% (65/112) were mixed breed (SRD). Among the owners, 88.24% (60/68) did not know what zoonosis is and 14.71% (10/68) were not aware what leishmaniasis is. Regarding the researched animals, 62.50% (70/112) had ectoparasites (fleas and ticks). It was also observed that 67.86% (76/112) of dogs had been dewormed, but in 59.82% (36/112) of cases, the intervals between these processes were irregular. For females, 85.71% (54/63) had no prevention heat and it was noted that 19.51% (8 / 41) had already given birth, had dystocia. With these data we can confirm the lack of information by these elderly and the need to establish community awareness and continued programs.

Objective: To compare two forms of scheduling clinical dental care for the oral health teams (OHT) included in the strategy of family health, regarding productive aspects of assistance. Methods: Two OHT worked concurrently, using two methods of clinical care: the parameter recommended by the Ministry of Health Ordinance No. 1101, 2002, which establishes 03 dental visits per hour (c/h) per team, and a Testing model, with 02 c/h, being each method applied for a period of 615 hours. The quantitative data was collected in OHTs’ daily production spreadsheets, covering the following items: the number of dental visits (initial, for maintenance and for emergency procedures), procedures performed, consumption of material and sterilization cycles. Data was compared and statistically analyzed through the BioStat 5.0 by applying the paired t-test (p <0.05). Results: Under the Ministerial method and the Testing model, were performed, respectively, 288 and 365 first dental visits, 921 and 686 return dental visits, 167 and 172 emergency dental attendances, with 469 and 110 fouls, 212 and 327 treatments were finished and 2501 and 3046 dental procedures were realized. Among eleven analyzed consumables, five were consumed in smaller quantities in the Testing model: gloves (9%), anesthesia (38%), anesthetic needle (34%), suture material (24%) and aspirators (11%), while the six remaining items presented similar consumption rates between the two models. Conclusions: The testing model revealed to be more productive and economical.

Introduction: The formation of Oral Health Team, healthy and ergonomic work conditions influence on quality of dental attendance to patient. Objective: In this observational and cross-sectional study, it was observed the participation of the dental assistants (ASB) on dental team on public health, to verify the items related to health legislation, the existence and distribution of equipment in dental offices. Material and method: The data collection was performed using questionnaires and observations on locals for consultation. It were interviewed 75 dentists from 9 cities of Health Regional Department (DRS) – XV – São José do Rio Preto City and it was evaluated 34 dental offices. Result: Of total 75 dentists, 21 (28%) worked alone and among them, 6 (29%) worked at school and 15(71%) at Health Basic Unit (UBS). From 34 dental offices, 2 (6%) did not show any equipment for sterilization and among those that had it, the autoclave was the most used method (44%). Among the analyzed dental offices, 31 (91%) had dustbin for common waste and 23 (68%) of contaminated waste was inadequate. It was noted that 13 (38%) did not have local to wash de hands; in 23 (68%) there was paper towel; in 20 (59%) there was ideal soap dishes, and the compressor was installed into dental offices in 5 (15%) of local for attendance. In relation to dental offices adequacy for the help work, all of them (n = 19) were dissatisfied. The aim of this study was to compare the quality of clarifi ed juice and VHP (Very High Purity) sugar produced from “bisada” sugarcane and an early maturation variety, at the beginning of harvest. The experiment was conducted at Usina São Martinho S/A, Pradópolis,SP (Brazil). The process of juice clarifi cation and sugar production was conducted at the Laboratory of Technology of Sugar and Alcohol in the College of Agricultural and Veterinary Sciences at the Universidade Estadual Paulista (FCAV/UNESP), Jaboticabal (SP). The experimental design was randomized, and two varieties were used: SP83-2847 (“bisada” sugarcane) and RB855156 (early maturation), with twelve replications for technological analysis and four replications for sugar production. The clarifi cation process and the clarifi ed juice was evaluated in terms of settling rates, volume of sludge that formed, total soluble solids, pH, turbidity, total phenolic compounds, starch and color. The sugar was characterized regarding the percentage of apparent sugar, color, total phenolic compounds, starch, fi lterability, humidity and safety factor. It was verifi ed that the processing of the juice clarifi cation was not affected by the processing of the “bisada” sugarcane. However, the clarifi ed juice from the SP83-2847 variety had a more intense color and a higher total soluble solids value. The sugar produced from the “bisada” sugarcane presented similar quality to the early maturation variety. It was concluded that the processing of “bisada” sugarcane at the start of the harvest did not affect the juice clarifi cation and resulted in VHP sugar of a quality similar to that of the early maturation variety.

This work had with objective to characterize and evaluate the performance of the combined system, involving activated charcoal and ionic exchange resins in the removal of substances organic contaminating of the ethyl alcohol from the fermentation of the cassava starch. To testing was used ethyl alcohol PA 96 oGL, conductivity of 0.90 μS/cm at 25 oC, acidity of 60 mg/L and Barbet test of 43 minutes at 15 oC. The contaminated alcohol was composed of ethyl alcohol additive of higher alcohols, organic acids, ester, diol, aldehydes, ketone and ether. Contaminated alcohol was added 2% activated charcoal and after the adsorption isotherm in ionic exchange resins was tested. The adsorption with activated charcoal was performed in a Water Bath at 30 oC for one hour and a half and shaking. Already adsorption ionic exchange columns occurred at room temperature on columns of 93,4 cm in filling height and diameter of 2.29 cm, for flows of 180 mL/min and 90 mL/min. Samples were collected in the tests with charcoal and with each one of the resins and the following analyses were performed: conductivity, acidity and Barbet test. The medium values for conductivity, acidity and Barbet test after the adsorption in charcoal and cation and anion resins were respectively: conductivity was 240; 354 and 465 μS/cm to 25 oC; acidity of 1.081; 1.103 and 1.062 mg/L and the Barbet test was 21; 20 and 9 minutes to 15 oC. It was observed that the addition of 2% of activated charcoal and the permanence in the columns of adsorption was not sufficient to remove the organic substances contaminating of the ethyl alcohol.

The production of starch and cassava starch (Manihot esculenta) if has shown to an important business for the region the northwest of the Paraná, generating income and job for a significant agricultural producers. The production of the region is processed for industries at private capital and cooperatives of producers. The study involving agricultural producers and one of the most important cooperatives of the region (C-Vale) objectified to evaluate the relationships between cooperative and producers, and the mechanisms of coordination of the productive chain. The results had disclosed that the relationships are not harmonious, generating opportunism situations, high costs of transaction and diffidence in the operations between producers and cooperative. Also if it perceived a difficulty of coordination of the productive chain, due to lack of integration between the partners, what it affects the competitiveness and the efficiency of the sector.

This paper aimed to study the treatability of rainwater using natural coagulant tannin based. Assays were performed in laboratory scale and aimed to study the conditions most suitable for dosage and for pH of coagulation. Preliminary tests indicated that tannin concentration of 3% (m/m) prepared from the commercial solution presented the best set of results (84.3% of removal for apparent color and 82.51% for turbidity) compared to ferric chloride (66.25% of removal for apparent color and 67.82% for turbidity) and starch (73.68% of removal for apparent color and 67.19% for turbidity). The coagulation diagrams indicate that the best region for dosage ranges from 15 mg/L to about 37.5 mg/L and for pH ranging from about 6.5 to 7.5. The results indicate that the tannin based natural coagulant may be an alternative to conventional coagulants for rainwater treatment seeking non potable uses.
