A novel double-slab Nd:YAG laser, which uses face-pumped slab medium cooled by liquid with different temperatures on both sides, is proposed. The thermal distortion of wavefront caused by the non-uniform temperature distribution in the laser gain media can be self-compensated. According to the method of operation, the models of the temperature distribution and stress are presented, and the analytic solutions for the model are derived. Furthermore, the numerical simulations with pulse pumping energy of 10 J and repetition frequencies of 500 and 1000 Hz are calculated respectively for Nd:YAG laser medium. The simulation results show that the temperature gradient remains the approximative linearity, and the heat stress is within the extreme range. Then the absorption coefficient is also discussed. The result indicates that the doping concentration cannot be too large for the high repetition frequency laser. It has been proved that the high repetition frequency, high laser beam quality, and high average output power of the order of kilowatt of Nd: YAG slab laser can be achieved in this structure.

从理论上详细探讨了基质激光玻璃与包边玻璃的折射率匹配与剩余反射率的关系,并从实验上验证了折射率匹配越好,吸收系数与包边玻璃厚度的乘积越大,则剩余反射率越低,从而对激光放大器中寄生振荡的抑制越好,增益也就越高。

The Raman spectra, infrared spectra and upconversion luminescence spectra were studied, and the effect mechanism of OH- groups on the upconversion luminescence of Er3+-doped oxyhalide tellurite glasses was analyzed. The results show that the phonon energy of lead chloride tellurite (PCT) glass was lower than that of lead fluoride tellurite (PFT) glass, but upconversion luminescence intensity of Er3+-doped PFT glass was higher than that of Er3+-doped PCT glass. The analysis considers that it was attributed mainly to the effect of OH- groups. The lower the absorption coefficient of the OH- groups, the higher the fluorescence lifetime of Er3+, and as a result the higher upconversion luminescence intensity of Er3+. In this work, the effect of OH groups on the upconversion luminescence of Er3+ was bigger than that of the phonon energy. (c) 2005 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Because of the influence of OH groups in phosphate glasses on the radiation of rare-earth ions, the laser performance is degraded. The laser efficiency and the small signal gain experiment of several phosphate glass samples have been done, the concentration of OH groups in glasses was calculated from the measured absorption coefficient at 3.47 μm. It is shown that the concentration of OH groups in phosphate glasses can seriously influence the laser output characteristics, and the OH groups have worse influence on the laser amplifier than laser oscillator.

The near-infrared emission intensity of Ni2+ in Yb3+/Ni2+ codoped transparent MgO-Al2O3-Ga2O3-SiO2-TiO2 glass ceramics could be enhanced up to 4.4 times via energy transfer from Yb3+ to Ni2+ in nanocrystals. The best Yb2O3 concentration was about 1.00 mol%. For the Yb3+/Ni2+ codoped glass ceramic with 1.00 mol% Yb2O3, a broadband near-infrared emission centered at 1265 nm with full width at half maximum of about 300 nm and lifetime of about 220 mu s was observed. Broadband infrared luminescence covering the optical telecommunication wavelength region of 0, E and S bands was observed in GeO2: Bi, M (M = Ga, B) glasses prepared by conventional melting-quenching technique. The luminescence with a maximum at around 1320 nm possesses a full width at half maximum larger than 300 nm and mean fluorescent lifetime longer than 500 mus when excited by an 808 nm-laser. These glasses may have potential applications in widely tunable laser and super-broadband optical amplifier for the optical communications. (C) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

采用提拉法生长了Yb^3+掺杂量分别为5.4at%,16.3at%,27.1at%,53.6at%和100at%的Yb:Y3Al5O12晶体.系统地表征和分析了Yb^3+掺杂量对晶体吸收光谱和荧光光谱的影响.随着Yb^3+掺杂量的增加,各峰值吸收系数呈线性增加的趋势.应用Smakula公式计算了各吸收峰对应的振荡强度,并分析了Yb^3+掺杂量对振荡强度的影响.当Yb^3+掺杂量增加到27.1at%时观察到了荧光猝灭现象;当Yb^3+掺杂量增加到53.6at%时,荧光光谱的线形发生了很大的变化。

用提拉法成功地生长了6mol%的高浓度掺铒铌酸锂晶体。测量了晶体的两个非偏振方向(X和Z)以及两个偏振方向(π和δ)的吸收光谱。高浓度掺铒铌酸锂晶体的吸收系数高,有利于提高泵浦效率。根据所测的吸收光谱用Judd-Ofelt理论拟合出了Er^3+离子的强度参数Ωλ。所得的均方差结果显示偏振拟合的误差要小于非偏振拟合。利用偏振吸收数据计算了各能级跃迁的自发辐射跃迁几率(AJJ’)、辐射寿命(τ)、荧光分支比(β)和积分发射截面(σp)等参数,对计算结果进行了讨论并与其他文献的报道结果进行了比较。

gamma-LiAlO2 single crystal was successfully grown by Czochralski method. The crystal quality was characterized by X-ray rocking curve and chemical etching. The effects of air-annealing and vapor transport equilibration (VTE) on the crystal quality, etch pits and absorption spectra of LiAlO2 were also investigated in detail. The results show that the as-grown crystal has very high quality with the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 17.7-22.6 arcsec. Dislocation density in the middle part of the crystal is as low as about 3.0 x 10(3) cm(-2). The VTE-treated slice has larger FWHM value, etch pits density and absorption coefficient as compared with those of untreated and air-annealed slices, which indicates that the crystal quality became inferior after VTE treatment. alpha-Al2O3:C crystal shows excellent thermoluminescence (TL) and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) properties but the real role carbon plays in this crystal is still not clearly understood so far. In this work, alpha-Al2O3:C crystal doping with different amounts of carbon were grown by the temperature gradient technique, and TL and OSL properties of as-grown crystals were investigated. Additionally, a mechanism was proposed to explain the role of carbon in forming the TL and OSL properties of alpha-Al2O3:C. TL and OSL intensities of as-grown crystals increase with the increasing amount of carbon doping in the crystal, but no shift is found in the glow peak location at 465 K. As the amount of carbon doping in the crystals decreases, OSL decay rate becomes faster. With the increase in heating rate, the integral TL response of as-grown crystals decreases and glow peak shifts to higher temperatures. TL response decrease rate increases with the increasing amount of carbon doping in the crystals. All the TL and OSL response curves of as-grown crystals show linear-sublinear-saturation characteristic, and OSL dose response exhibits higher sensitivity and wider linear dose range than that of TL. The crystal doping with 5000 ppm carbon shows the best dosimetric properties. Carbon plays the role of a dopant in alpha-Al2O3:C crystal and four-valent carbon anions replace the two-valent anions of oxygen during the crystal growth process, and large amounts of oxygen vacancies were formed, which corresponds to the high absorption coefficient of F and F+ centers in the crystals.

Antireflection coatings at the center wavelength of 1053 nm were prepared on BK7 glasses by electron-beam evaporation deposition (EBD) and ion beam assisted deposition (IBAD). Parts of the two kinds of samples were post-treated with oxygen plasma at the environment temperature after deposition. Absorption at 1064 nm was characterized based on surface thermal lensing (STL) technique. The laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) was measured by a 1064-nm Nd:YAG laser with a pulse width of 38 ps. Leica-DMRXE Microscope was applied to gain damage morphologies of samples. The results revealed that oxygen post-treatment could lower the absorption and increase the damage thresholds for both kinds of as-grown samples. However, the improving effects are not the same. The all-optical nonlinearity of a quantum well waveguide is studied by measuring the intensity dependent transmission through a Fabry-Perot cavity formed around the guide. Values for the nonlinear refractive index coefficient, η 2, at a wavelength of 1.06μm are obtained for light whose polarisation is either parallel or perpendicular to the quantum well layers. A simple measurement to estimate the two photon absorption coefficient, B2, using relatively low optical power levels is also described.

The annealing of ion implantation damage in silicon by rapid isothermal heating has been monitored by the time resolved reflectivity (TRR) method. This technique was applied simultaneously at a wavelength of 632. 8nm and also at 1152nm, where the optical absorption coefficient of silicon is less. The two wavelength method simplifies the interpretation of TRR results, extends the measurement depth and allows good resolution of the position of the interface between amorphous and crystalline silicon. The regrowth of amorphous layers in silicon, created by self implantation and implanted with electrically active impurities, was observed. Regrowth in rapid isothermal annealing occurs during the heating up stage of typical thermal cycles. Impurities such as B, P, and As increase the regrowth rate in a manner consistent with a vacancy model for regrowth. The maximum regrowth rate in boron implanted silicon is limited by the solid solubility.
