The Light Steel Framing building technology was introduced in Brazil in the late 1990s for the construction of residential houses. Because the design system was imported from the United States and is optimised to work well in that temperate climate, some modi fi cations must be made to adapt it for the Brazilian climate. The objective of this paper was to assess the impact of thermal bridging across enclosure elements on the thermal performance of buildings designed with Light Steel Framing in Brazil. The numerical simulation program EnergyPlus and a speci fi c method that considered the effects of metallic structures in the hourly simulations were used for the analysis. Two air-conditioned commercial buildings were used as case studies. The peak thermal load increased approximately 10% when an interior metal frame was included in the numerical simulations compared to non-metallic structures. Even when a metal frame panel was used only for vertical elements in the facade of a building with a conventional concrete structure, the simulations showed a 5% increase in annual energy use.

Since the earliest developments of human history, friction has been a major issue. From the invention of the wheel and the use of the first lubricants to the studiesof coated and microtexturized surfaces, significant effort has been put on improvements that couldovercome the resistance to motion. Areview by Holmberg, Andersson and Erdemir[1] shows that, in an average passenger car, about one third of the total energy consumptionis due to friction losses. Of these, another one third is consumed in the engine system. The optimization of the lubricating oil formulation used ininternal combustion enginesis an important way to reduce friction, therefore improving energeticefficiencyand controllingemissions.Lubrication is also a way to assure the required protection to the system by maintaining wear rates in an adequate level, which helps to minimize maintenance costs.

Understanding the interaction of sea ice with offshore structures is of primary importance for the development of technology in cold climate regions. The rheological properties of sea ice (strength, creep, viscosity) as well as the roughness of the contact surface are the main factors influencing the type of interaction with a structure. A device was developed and designed and small scale laboratory experiments were carried out to study sea ice frictional interaction with steel material by means of a uniaxial compression rig. Sea-ice was artificially grown between a stainless steel piston (of circular cross section) and a hollow cylinder of the same material, coaxial to the former and of the same surface roughness. Three different values for the roughness were tested: 1.2, 10 and 30 μm Ry (maximum asperities height), chosen as representative values for typical surface conditions, from smooth to normally corroded steel. Creep tests (0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.6 kN) were conducted at T = -10 ºC. By pushing the piston head towards the cylinder base, three different types of relative movement were observed: 1) the piston slid through the ice, 2) the piston slid through the ice and the ice slid on the surface of the outer cylinder, 3) the ice slid only on the cylinder surface. A cyclic stick-slip motion of the piston was detected with a representative frequency of 0.1 Hz. The ratio of the mean rate of axial displacement to the frequency of the stick-slip oscillations was found to be comparable to the roughness length (Sm). The roughness is the most influential parameter affecting the amplitude of the oscillations, while the load has a relevant influence on the their frequency. Experimental study on the long-term deformations of the fibre reinforced concrete. Steel and macro-synthetic fibers were used to evaluate the shrinkage, creep, mid-span deflection, cracking and rupture analysis of three different types of samples. At the end the main topics of ACI guidelines were analyzed in order to perform an overview of design.

In dieser Arbeit wird ein vergröbertes (engl. coarse-grained, CG) Simulationsmodell für Peptide in wässriger Lösung entwickelt. In einem CG Verfahren reduziert man die Anzahl der Freiheitsgrade des Systems, so dass manrngrössere Systeme auf längeren Zeitskalen untersuchen kann. Die Wechselwirkungspotentiale des CG Modells sind so aufgebaut, dass die Peptid Konformationen eines höher aufgelösten (atomistischen) Modells reproduziert werden.rnIn dieser Arbeit wird der Einfluss unterschiedlicher bindender Wechsel-rnwirkungspotentiale in der CG Simulation untersucht, insbesondere daraufhin,rnin wie weit das Konformationsgleichgewicht der atomistischen Simulation reproduziert werden kann. Im CG Verfahren verliert man per Konstruktionrnmikroskopische strukturelle Details des Peptids, zum Beispiel, Korrelationen zwischen Freiheitsgraden entlang der Peptidkette. In der Dissertationrnwird gezeigt, dass diese “verlorenen” Eigenschaften in einem Rückabbildungsverfahren wiederhergestellt werden können, in dem die atomistischen Freiheitsgrade wieder in die CG-Strukturen eingefügt werden. Dies gelingt, solange die Konformationen des CG Modells grundsätzlich gut mit der atomistischen Ebene übereinstimmen. Die erwähnten Korrelationen spielen einerngrosse Rolle bei der Bildung von Sekundärstrukturen und sind somit vonrnentscheidender Bedeutung für ein realistisches Ensemble von Peptidkonformationen. Es wird gezeigt, dass für eine gute Übereinstimmung zwischen CG und atomistischen Kettenkonformationen spezielle bindende Wechselwirkungen wie zum Beispiel 1-5 Bindungs- und 1,3,5-Winkelpotentiale erforderlich sind. Die intramolekularen Parameter (d.h. Bindungen, Winkel, Torsionen), die für kurze Oligopeptide parametrisiert wurden, sind übertragbarrnauf längere Peptidsequenzen. Allerdings können diese gebundenen Wechselwirkungen nur in Kombination mit solchen nichtbindenden Wechselwirkungspotentialen kombiniert werden, die bei der Parametrisierung verwendet werden, sind also zum Beispiel nicht ohne weiteres mit einem andere Wasser-Modell kombinierbar. Da die Energielandschaft in CG-Simulationen glatter ist als im atomistischen Modell, gibt es eine Beschleunigung in der Dynamik. Diese Beschleunigung ist unterschiedlich für verschiedene dynamische Prozesse, zum Beispiel für verschiedene Arten von Bewegungen (Rotation und Translation). Dies ist ein wichtiger Aspekt bei der Untersuchung der Kinetik von Strukturbildungsprozessen, zum Beispiel Peptid Aggregation.rn

Studio dell'effetto della duttilità sul carico di collasso: il crollo di una copertura reticolare spaziale in acciaio causato dalla compresenza di un'ingente mancanza di resistenza e duttilità nei collegamenti delle aste e possibili stati coattivi. Il carico di collasso nel caso di strutture a bassa duttilità dipende dalla presenza di stati coattivi dovuti a imperfezioni di realizzazione o cedimenti vincolari della struttura in esercizio.

Open web steel joists are designed in the United States following the governing specification published by the Steel Joist Institute. For compression members in joists, this specification employs an effective length factor, or K-factor, in confirming their adequacy. In most cases, these K-factors have been conservatively assumed equal to 1.0 for compression web members, regardless of the fact that intuition and limited experimental work indicate that smaller values could be justified. Given that smaller K-factors could result in more economical designs without a loss in safety, the research presented in this thesis aims to suggest procedures for obtaining more rational values. Three different methods for computing in-plane and out-of-plane K-factors are investigated, including (1) a hand calculation method based on the use of alignment charts, (2) computational critical load (eigenvalue) analyses using uniformly distributed loads, and (3) computational analyses using a compressive strain approach. The latter method is novel and allows for computing the individual buckling load of a specific member within a system, such as a joist. Four different joist configurations are investigated, including an 18K3, 28K10, and two variations of a 32LH06. Based on these methods and the very limited number of joists studied, it appears promising that in-plane and out-of-plane K-factors of 0.75 and 0.85, respectively, could be used in computing the flexural buckling strength of web members in routine steel joist design. Recommendations for future work, which include systematically investigating a wider range of joist configurations and connection restraint, are provided.
