Nicotine plays a role in smoking-associated cardiovascular diseases, and may upregulate matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2 and MMP-9. We examined whether nicotine induces the release of MMP-2 and MMP-9 by rat smooth muscle cells (SMC), and whether doxycycline (non-selective MMP inhibitor) inhibits the vascular effects produced by nicotine. SMC were incubated with nicotine 0, 50, and 150 nM for 48 h. MMP-2 and MMP-9 levels in the cell supernatants were determined by gelatin zymography. The acute changes in mean arterial pressure caused by nicotine 2 mu mol/kg (or saline) were assessed in rats pretreated with doxycycline (or saline). We also examined whether doxcycline (30 mg/Kg, i.p., daily) modifies the effects of nicotine (10 mg/kg/day; 4 weeks) on the endothelium-dependent relaxations of rat aortic rings. Aortic MMP-2 levels were assessed by gelatin zymography. Aortic gelatinolytic activity was assessed using a gelatinolytic activity kit. MMP-2 and MMP-9 levels increased in the supernatant of SMC cells incubated with nicotine 150 nM (P<0.05) but not with 50 nM. Nicotine (2 mu mol/kg) produced lower increases in the mean arterial pressure in rats pretreated with doxycycline than those found in rats pretreated with saline (26 +/- 4 vs. 37 +/- 4 mmHg, respectively; P<0.05). Nicotine impaired of the endothelium-dependent responses to acetylcholine, and treatment with doxycycline increased the potency (pD2) by approximately 25% (P<0.05). While we found no significant differences in aortic MMP-2 levels, nicotine significantly increased gelatinolytic activity (P<0.05). These findings suggest that nicotine produces cardiovascular effects involving MMPs. It is possible that MMPs inhibition may counteract the effects produced by nicotine. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. Abnormal matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) activity causes cardiovascular diseases. Because hyperglycemia increase MMPs activities through increased oxidative stress. we hypothesized that antioxidant effects produced by lercanidipine could attenuate the increases in MMP-2 expression/activity in diabetic rats. Control and diabetic (alloxan-induced diabetes) rats received lercanidipine 2.5 mg/kg/day (or tap water) starting three weeks after alloxan (or vehicle) injections. Blood pressure was monitored weekly. After six weeks of treatment, vascular reactivity and structural changes were assessed in aortic rings. MMP-2 levels were determined by gelatin zymography, and MMP-2/tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases (TIMP)-2 mRNA levels were determined by quantitative real time RT-PCR. Plasma thiobarbituric acid reactive substances concentrations were determined by fluorimetry. Lercanidipine produced antihypertensive effects (201 +/- 5 vs. 163 +/- 7 mm Hg in diabetic rats untreated and treated with lercaniclipine, respectively; P < 0.01) and reversed the impairment in endothelium-dependent vasorelaxation in diabetic rats. Increased MMP-2 and Pro-MMP-2 levels were found in the aortas of diabetic rats (both P < 0.001). Lercandipine attenuated the increases in oxidative stress and in MMP-2 (both P < 0.05). While diabetes induced no major structural changes, it caused a 16-fold increase in the ratio of MMP-2/TIMP-2 mRNA expression, which was completely reversed by lercanidipine (both P < 0.001). These results show that antioxidant and beneficial vascular effects produced by lercanidipine in diabetic rats are associated with reversion of the imbalance in vascular MMP-2MMP-2 expression. Between 34 and 15 million years (Myr) ago, when planetary temperatures were 3-4 degreesC warmer than at present and atmospheric CO2 concentrations were twice as high as today(1), the Antarctic ice sheets may have been unstable(2-7). Oxygen isotope records from deep-sea sediment cores suggest that during this time fluctuations in global temperatures and high-latitude continental ice volumes were influenced by orbital cycles(8-10). But it has hitherto not been possible to calibrate the inferred changes in ice volume with direct evidence for oscillations of the Antarctic ice sheets(11). Here we present sediment data from shallow marine cores in the western Ross Sea that exhibit well dated cyclic variations, and which link the extent of the East Antarctic ice sheet directly to orbital cycles during the Oligocene/Miocene transition (24.1-23.7 Myr ago). Three rapidly deposited glaci-marine sequences are constrained to a period of less than 450 kyr by our age model, suggesting that orbital influences at the frequencies of obliquity (40 kyr) and eccentricity (125 kyr) controlled the oscillations of the ice margin at that time. An erosional hiatus covering 250 kyr provides direct evidence for a major episode of global cooling and ice-sheet expansion about 23.7 Myr ago, which had previously been inferred from oxygen isotope data (Mil event(5)).

Codes C-1,...,C-M of length it over F-q and an M x N matrix A over F-q define a matrix-product code C = [C-1 (...) C-M] (.) A consisting of all matrix products [c(1) (...) c(M)] (.) A. This generalizes the (u/u + v)-, (u + v + w/2u + v/u)-, (a + x/b + x/a + b + x)-, (u + v/u - v)- etc. constructions. We study matrix-product codes using Linear Algebra. This provides a basis for a unified analysis of /C/, d(C), the minimum Hamming distance of C, and C-perpendicular to. It also reveals an interesting connection with MDS codes. We determine /C/ when A is non-singular. To underbound d(C), we need A to be 'non-singular by columns (NSC)'. We investigate NSC matrices. We show that Generalized Reed-Muller codes are iterative NSC matrix-product codes, generalizing the construction of Reed-Muller codes, as are the ternary 'Main Sequence codes'. We obtain a simpler proof of the minimum Hamming distance of such families of codes. If A is square and NSC, C-perpendicular to can be described using C-1(perpendicular to),...,C-M(perpendicular to) and a transformation of A. This yields d(C-perpendicular to). Finally we show that an NSC matrix-product code is a generalized concatenated code.

This study evaluated in vitro the bond strength of Epiphany sealer prepared with resinous solvent of Epiphany system (Thinning resin) by using a push-out test. Forty maxillary canines were sectioned transversally below the cementoenamel junction to provide 4-mm-thick dentin disks that were centered in aluminum rings and embedded in acrylic resin. Root canals were prepared with tapered diamond bur. Intraradicular dentin was treated with 1% NaOCl for 30 minutes, 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid for 5 minutes, and flushed with distilled water for 1 minute. The specimens were randomly distributed into 4 groups (n = 10) according to the filling material: GI, Epiphany without photoactivation; GII, Epiphany prepared with solvent without photoactivation; Gill, Epiphany followed by photoactivation; and GIV, Epiphany prepared with solvent followed by photoactivation. After the setting time, the specimens were submitted to the push-out test. The highest mean value (14.91 +/- 2.82 MPa) was obtained with Epiphany prepared with solvent followed by photoactivation (GIV), which was statistically different (P < .01) from the other groups. Groups I (8.15 +/- 2.47 MPa), II (9.46 +/- 2.38 MPa), and III (9.80 +/- 2.51 MPa) had inferior bond strength values and were statistically similar among themselves (P > .01). The resinous solvent of Epiphany system increased the bond strength of Epiphany sealer to dentin walls when followed by photoactivation. (J Endod 2009;35: 251-255)

Objective The purpose of this study was to evaluate the retention force of an O-ring attachment system in different inclinations to the ideal path of insertion, using devices to compensate angulations. Material and methods Two implants were inserted into an aluminum base, and ball attachments were screwed to implants. Cylinders with O-rings were placed on ball attachments and connected to the test device using positioners to compensate implant angulations (0 degrees, 7 degrees, and 14 degrees). Plexiglass bases were used to simulate implant angulations. The base and the test device were positioned in a testing apparatus, which simulated insertion/removal of an overdenture. A total of 2900 cycles, simulating 2 years of overdenture use, were performed and 36 O-rings were tested. The force required for each cycle was recorded with computer software. Longitudinal sections of ball attachment-positioner-cylinder with O-rings of each angulation were obtained to analyze the relationship among them, and O-ring sections tested in each angulation were compared with an unused counterpart. A mixed linear model was used to analyze the data, and the comparison was performed by orthogonal contrasts (alpha=0.05). Results At 0 degrees, the retention force decreased significantly over time, and the retention force was significantly different in all comparisons, except from 12 to 18 months. When the implants were positioned at 7 degrees, the retention force was statistically different at 0 and 24 months. At 14 degrees, significant differences were found from 6 and 12 to 24 months. Conclusions Within the limitations of this study, it was concluded that O-rings for implant/attachments perpendicular to the occlusal plane were adequately retentive over the first year and that the retentive capacity of O-ring was affected by implant inclinations despite the proposed positioners. The nervous system of temnocephalid flatworms consists of the brain and three pairs of longitudinal connectives extending into the trunk and tail. The connectives are crosslinked by an invariant number of regularly spaced commissures. Branches of the connectives innervate the tentacles of the head and the sucker organ in the tail. A set of nerve rings encircling the pharynx and connected to the brain and connectives constitute the pharyngeal nervous system. The nervous system is formed during early embryogenesis when the embryo represents a multilayered mesenchymal mass of cells. Gastrulation and the formation of separate epithelial germ layers that characterize most other animal groups are absent. The brain arises as a bilaterally symmetric condensation of postmitotic cells in the deep layers of the anterior region of the embryonic mesenchyme. The pattern of axon outgrowth, visualized by labeling with anti-acetylated tubulin (acTub) antibody, shows marked differences from the pattern observed in other flatworm taxa. in regard to the number of neurons that express the acTub epitope. Acetylated tubulin is only expressed in neurons that form long axon tracts. In other flatworm species, such as the typhloplanoid Mesostoma and the polyclad Imogine, which were investigated by us with the acTub antibody (Hartenstein and Ehlers [2000] Dev. Genes Evol. 210:399-415; Younossi-Hartenstein and Hartenstein [2000] Dev. Genes Evol. 210:383-398), only a small number of pioneer neurons become acTub positive during the embryonic period. By contrast, in temnocephalids, most, if not all, neurons express acTub and form long, large-diameter axons. Initially, the brain commissure, pharyngeal nerve ring, and the connectives are laid down. Commissural tracts and tentacle nerves branching off the connectives appear later. We speculate that the precocious differentiation of the nervous system may be related to the fact that temnocephalids move by muscle action, and possess a massive and complex muscular system when they hatch. In addition, they have muscular specializations such as the anterior tentacles and the posterior sucker that are used as soon as they hatch. By contrast, juveniles of Mesostoma and larvae of polyclads move predominantly by ciliary action that may not require a complex neural circuitry for coordination. (C) 2001 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

A comparative study of the high energy radiation resistance to formation of radicals in two pairs of polymers is reported. In one pair of polymers the phenyl groups containing the imide rings are separated by an ether linkage and in the other pair they are separated by an hexafluoroisopropylidine group. Two of the polymers contained aromatic amine units linked through an ether linkage and the other two polymers contained a trifluoromethyl biphenyl diamine. The polymers were shown to retain a high level of transparency in the visible region following radiolysis to doses as high as 8 Gy. ESR studies of the resistance to radical formation on radiolysis. at 77 K revealed that the polymers containing ether linkages were more stable than their fluorinated analogues, but all were less stable than Kapton (R). In its first term, the Howard government hired Australasian Research Strategies (ARS), headed by pollster Mark Textor, to conduct market research for several Commonwealth departments and agencies. This was, the Labor Opposition claimed, a case of the Liberals handing jobs to their 'mates'. Textor played a key role in the Liberals' 1996 and 1998 federal election campaigns. However, Labor's attack rings hollow since in the 1980s the Hawke government similarly contracted Rod Cameron's ANOP to conduct opinion research for Commonwealth departments and agencies. At the time Cameron was Labor's strategic pollster and centrally involved in planning Labor election campaigns. On both sides of Australian politics, governments have begun to channel patronage towards their party's pollsters. In this research note, we suggest that this development cannot be explained as 'jobs for the boys'. Instead, this new form of patronage has its roots in the vital role that pollsters now play in guiding election campaigns, and in the commercial reality that Australian politics provides too little work to sustain specialist political pollsters. Parties in government now appear to utilise incumbency to sustain an ongoing relationship with the commercial polling organisations like ANOP and ARS to whom they will entrust much of the planning of their campaign for re-election.

The vacancy solution theory of adsorption is re-formulated here through the mass-action law, and placed in a convenient framework permitting the development of thermodynamic ally consistent isotherms. It is shown that both the multisite Langmuir model and the classical vacancy solution theory expression are special cases of the more general approach when the Flory-Huggins activity coefficient model is used, with the former being the thermodynamically consistent result. The improved vacancy solution theory approach is further extended here to heterogeneous adsorbents by considering the pore-width dependent potential along with a pore size distribution. However, application of the model to numerous hydrocarbons as well as other adsorptives on microporous activated carbons shows that the multisite model has difficulty in the presence of a pore size distribution, because pores of different sizes can have different numbers of adsorbed layers and therefore different site occupancies. On the other hand, use of the classical vacancy solution theory expression for the local isotherm leads to good simultaneous fit of the data, while yielding a site diameter of about 0.257 nm, consistent with that expected for the potential well in aromatic rings on carbon pore surfaces. It is argued that the classical approach is successful because the Flory-Huggins term effectively represents adsorbate interactions in disguise. When used together with the ideal adsorbed solution theory the heterogeneous vacancy solution theory successfully predicts binary adsorption equilibria, and is found to perform better than the multisite Langmuir as well as the heterogeneous Langmuir model. The spermatozoa of Crotaphytus bicinctores and Gambelia wislizenii (Crotaphytidae), and Anolis carolinensis (Polychrotidae) exhibit the squamate autapomorphies of a single perforatorium extending anteriorly from the apical tip of the paracrystalline subacrosomal cone, the presence of an epinuclear electron-lucent region, and extension of the fibrous sheath into the midpiece. Crotaphytid sperm differ from those of polychrotids in several respects, including: the structure of the perforatorium, the size of the epinuclear electron-lucent region, aspects of the acrosome complex, the arrangement and structure of intermitochondrial dense bodies, and in the distance the fibrous sheath extends into the midpiece. The sperm of C. bicinctores, G. wislizenii, and A. carolinensis are most similar to those of the agamids and phrynosomatids examined to date. No spermatozoal autapomorphies for Crotaphytidae or Polychrotidae were found. The condition of having the intermitochondrial dense bodies arranged in regular incomplete rings is tentatively defined as a synapomorphy of Iguania (although modified in Chamaeleonidae). Spermatozoal ultrastructure offers no characters that justify the separation of Iguanidae (sensu late) into several separate families. (C) 2001 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Cardiovascular remodelling, defined as ventricular and vascular hypertrophy together with fibrosis, characterises hypertension following inhibition of the production of the endogenous vasodilator, nitric oxide (NO). This study has determined whether the cardiovascular remodelling following chronic NO synthase inhibition can e reversed by administration of the selective angiotensin II AT(1)-receptor antagonist, candesartan. Male Wistar rats were treated with L-nitroarginine methyl ester (L-NAME, 400 mg/l in drinking water) for eight weeks and with candesartan cilexetil (2 mg/kg/day by oral gavage) for the last four weeks. L-NAME-treated rats became hypertensive with systolic blood pressure increasing from 110 +/- 4 mmHg (control) to 170 +/- 10 mmHg. Rats developed left ventricular hypertrophy (control 1.70 +/- 0.06; L-NAME 2.10 +/- 0.04 mg/kg body wt) with markedly increased deposition of perivascular and interstitial collagen. Candesartan returned blood pressure, left ventricular weights and collagen deposition to control values. Echo cardiographic assessment showed concentric hypertrophy with an increased fractional shortening; this was reversed by candesartan treatment. Heart failure was not evident. In the isolated Langendorff heart, diastolic stiffness increased in L-NAME-treated rats while the rate of increase in pressure (+dP/dt) increased after eight weeks only; candesartan reduced collagen deposition and normalised +dP/dt. In isolated left ventricular papillary muscles, the potency (negative log EC50) of noradrenaline as a positive inotropic compound was unchanged, (control 6.56 +/- 0.14); maximal increase in force before ectopic beats was reduced from 5.0 +/- 0.4 mN to 2.0 +/- 0.2 mN. Noradrenaline potency as a vasoconstrictor in thoracic aortic rings was unchanged, but maximal contraction was markedly reduced from 25.2 +/- 2.0 mN to 3.0 +/- 0.3 mN; this was partially reversed by candesartan treatment. Thus, chronic inhibition of NO production with L-NAME induces hypertension, hypertrophy and fibrosis with increased toxicity and significant decreases in vascular responses to noradrenaline. These changes were at least partially reversible by treatment with candesartan, implying a significant role of AT(1)-receptors in L-NAME-induced cardiovascular changes.

We reinterpret the state space dimension equations for geometric Goppa codes. An easy consequence is that if deg G less than or equal to n-2/2 or deg G greater than or equal to n-2/2 + 2g then the state complexity of C-L(D, G) is equal to the Wolf bound. For deg G is an element of [n-1/2, n-3/2 + 2g], we use Clifford's theorem to give a simple lower bound on the state complexity of C-L(D, G). We then derive two further lower bounds on the state space dimensions of C-L(D, G) in terms of the gonality sequence of F/F-q. (The gonality sequence is known for many of the function fields of interest for defining geometric Goppa codes.) One of the gonality bounds uses previous results on the generalised weight hierarchy of C-L(D, G) and one follows in a straightforward way from first principles; often they are equal. For Hermitian codes both gonality bounds are equal to the DLP lower bound on state space dimensions. We conclude by using these results to calculate the DLP lower bound on state complexity for Hermitian codes.

The synthesis, characterization and copper(II) coordination chemistry of three new cyclic peptide ligands, PatJ(1) (cyclo-(Ile -Thr- (Gly)Thz-lle-Thr(Gly)Thz)), PatJ(2) (cyclo-(Ile-Thr(Gly)Thz-(D)-Ile-Thr-(Gly)Thz)), and PatL (cyclo-(Ile-Ser-(Gly)Thz-Ile-Ser(Gly)Thz)) are reported. All of these cyclic peptides and PatN (cyclo-(Ile-Ser(Gly)Thz-Ile-Thr-(Gly)Thz)) are derivatives of patellamide A and have a [24]azacrown-8 macrocyclic structure. All four synthetic cyclic peptides have two thiazole rings but, in contrast to patellamide A, no oxazoline rings. The molecular structure of PatJ1, determined by X-ray crystallography, has a saddle conformation with two close-to-co-parallel thiazole rings, very similar to the geometry of patellamide D. The two coordination sites of PatJ1 with thiazole-N and amide-N donors are each well preorganized for transition metal ion binding. The coordination of copper(II) was monitored by UV/Vis spectroscopy, and this reveals various (meta)stable mono- and dinuclear copper(II) complexes whose stoichiometry was confirmed by mass spectra. Two types of dinuclear copper(II) complexes, [Cu-2(H4L)(OH2)(n)](2+) (n = 6, 8) and [Cu-2(H4L)(OH2)(n)] (n=4, 6; L=PatN, PatL, PatJ1, PatJ2) have been identified and analyzed structurally by EPR spectroscopy and a combination of spectra simulations and molecular mechanics calculations (MM-EPR). The four structures are similar to each other and have a saddle conformation, that is, derived from the crystal structure of PatJ(1) by a twist of the two thiozole rings. The small but significant structural differences are characterized by the EPR simulations.

Laser heating Ar-40/Ar-39 geochronology provides high analytical precision and accuracy, mum-scale spatial resolution. and statistically significant data sets for the study of geological and planetary processes, A newly commissioned Ar-40/Ar-39 laboratory at CPGeo/USP, Sao Paulo, Brazil, equips the Brazilian scientific community with a new powerful tool applicable to the study of geological and cosmochemical processes. Detailed information about laboratory layout, environmental conditions, and instrumentation provides the necessary parameters for the evaluation of the CPGeo/USp Ar-40/Ar-39 suitability to a diverse range of applications. Details about analytical procedures, including mineral separation, irradiation at the IPEN/CNEN reactor at USP, and mass spectrometric analysis enable potential researchers to design the necessary sampling and sample preparation program suitable to the objectives of their study. Finally, the results of calibration tests using Ca and K salts and glasses, international mineral standards, and in-house mineral standards show that the accuracy and precision obtained at the Ar-40/Ar-39 laboratory at CPGeo/USP are comparable to results obtained in the most respected laboratories internationally. The extensive calibration and standardization procedures under-taken ensure that the results of analytical studies carried out in our laboratories will gain immediate international credibility, enabling Brazilian students and scientists to conduct forefront research in earth and planetary sciences.
