The momentum distributions of electrons ionized from H atoms by chirped few-cycle attosecond pulses are investigated by numerically solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation. The central carrier frequency of the pulse is chosen to be 25 eV, which is well above the ionization threshold. The asymmetry (or difference) in the yield of electrons ionized along and opposite to the direction of linear laser polarization is found to be very sensitive to the pulse chirp (for pulses with fixed carrier-envelope phase), both for a fixed electron energy and for the energy-integrated yield. In particular, the larger the pulse chirp, the larger the number of times the asymmetry changes sign as a function of ionized electron energy. For a fixed chirp, the ionized electron asymmetry is found to be sensitive also to the carrier-envelope phase of the few-cycle pulse.

The free-carrier absorption cross-section sigma of a magnetic colloid composed of magnetite nanoparticles dispersed in oil is obtained by using the Z-scan technique in different experimental conditions of the laser beam. We show that it is possible to obtain sigma with picosecond pulsed and millisecond chopped beams with pulse frequencies smaller than about 30 Hz. For higher pulse frequencies, the heating of the colloidal system triggers the appearance of the Soret effect. This effect artificially increases the value of sigma calculated from the experimental results. The limits of the different experimental setups are discussed. (C) 2012 Optical Society of America

We investigate the occurrence of the optical Kerr effect and two-photon absorption when an oil-based magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles colloidal suspension is illuminated with high intensity femtosecond laser pulses. The frequency of the pulses is controlled and the Z-scan technique is employed in our measurements of the nonlinear optical Kerr coefficient (n(2)) and two-photon absorption coefficient (beta). From these values it was possible to calculate the real and imaginary parts of the third-order susceptibility. We observed that increasing the pulse frequency, additional physical processes take place, increasing artificially the absolute values of n(2) and beta. The experimental conditions are discussed to assure the obtention of reliable values of these nonlinear optical parameters, which may be useful in all-optical switching and optical power limiting applications. Generation of coherent short-wavelength radiation across a plasma column is dramatically improved under traveling-wave excitation (TWE). The latter is optimized when its propagation is close to the speed of light, which implies small-angle target-irradiation. Yet, short-wavelength lasing needs large irradiation angles in order to increase the optical penetration of the pump into the plasma core. Pulse-front back-tilt is considered to overcome such trade-off. In fact, the TWE speed depends on the pulse-front slope (envelope of amplitude), whereas the optical penetration depth depends on the wave-front slope (envelope of phase). Pulse-front tilt by means of compressor misalignment was found effective only if coupled with a high-magnification front-end imaging/focusing component. It is concluded that speed matching should be accomplished with minimal compressor misalignment and maximal imaging magnification.

We study the tuning curve of entangled photons generated by type-0 spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a periodically poled potassium titanyl phosphate crystal. We demonstrate the X-shaped spatiotemporal structure of the spectrum by means of measurements and numerical simulations. Experiments for different pump waists, crystal temperatures, and crystal lengths are in good agreement with numerical simulations.

Ex vivo porcine retina laser lesions applied with varying laser power (20 mW–2 W, 10 ms pulse, 196 lesions) are manually evaluated by microscopic and optical coherence tomography (OCT) visibility, as well as in histological sections immediately after the deposition of the laser energy. An optical coherence tomography system with 1.78 um axial resolution specifically developed to image thin retinal layers simultaneously to laser therapy is presented, and visibility thresholds of the laser lesions in OCT data and fundus imaging are compared. Optical coherence tomography scans are compared with histological sections to estimate the resolving power for small optical changes in the retinal layers, and real-time time-lapse scans during laser application are shown and analyzed quantitatively. Ultrahigh-resolution OCT inspection features a lesion visibility threshold 40–50 mW (17 reduction) lower than for visual inspection. With the new measurement system, 42 of the lesions that were invisible using state-of-the-art ophthalmoscopic methods could be detected.

Sound speed as a diagnostic marker for various diseases of human tissue has been of interest for a while. Up to now, mostly transmission ultrasound computed tomography (UCT) was able to detect spatially resolved sound speed, and its promise as a diagnostic tool has been demonstrated. However, UCT is limited to acoustically transparent samples such as the breast. We present a novel technique where spatially resolved detection of sound speed can be achieved using conventional pulse-echo equipment in reflection mode. For this purpose, pulse-echo images are acquired under various transmit beam directions and a two-dimensional map of the sound speed is reconstructed from the changing phase of local echoes using a direct reconstruction method. Phantom results demonstrate that a high spatial resolution (1 mm) and contrast (0.5 % of average sound speed) can be achieved suitable for diagnostic purposes. In comparison to previous reflection-mode based methods, CUTE works also in a situation with only diffuse echoes, and its direct reconstruction algorithm enables real-time application. This makes it suitable as an addition to conventional clinical ultrasound where it has the potential to benefit diagnosis in a multimodal approach. In addition, knowledge of the spatial distribution of sound speed allows full aberration correction and thus improved spatial resolution and contrast of conventional B-mode ultrasound. © (2014) COPYRIGHT Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE). Purpose: Selective retina therapy (SRT) has shown great promise compared to conventional retinal laser photocoagulation as it avoids collateral damage and selectively targets the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). Its use, however, is challenging in terms of therapy monitoring and dosage because an immediate tissue reaction is not biomicroscopically discernibel. To overcome these limitations, real-time optical coherence tomography (OCT) might be useful to monitor retinal tissue during laser application. We have thus evaluated a proprietary OCT system for its capability of mapping optical changes introduced by SRT in retinal tissue. Methods: Freshly enucleated porcine eyes, covered in DMEM upon collection were utilized and a total of 175 scans from ex-vivo porcine eyes were analyzed. The porcine eyes were used as an ex-vivo model and results compared to two time-resolved OCT scans, recorded from a patient undergoing SRT treatment (SRT Vario, Medical Laser Center Lübeck). In addition to OCT, fluorescin angiography and fundus photography were performed on the patient and OCT scans were subsequently investigated for optical tissue changes linked to laser application. Results: Biomicroscopically invisible SRT lesions were detectable in OCT by changes in the RPE / Bruch's complex both in vivo and the porcine ex-vivo model. Laser application produced clearly visible optical effects such as hyperreflectivity and tissue distortion in the treated retina. Tissue effects were even discernible in time-resolved OCT imaging when no hyper-reflectivity persisted after treatment. Data from ex-vivo porcine eyes showed similar to identical optical changes while effects visible in OCT appeared to correlate with applied pulse energy, leading to an additional reflective layer when lesions became visible in indirect ophthalmoscopy. Conclusions: Our results support the hypothesis that real-time high-resolution OCT may be a promising modality to obtain additional information about the extent of tissue damage caused by SRT treatment. Data shows that our exvivo porcine model adequately reproduces the effects occurring in-vivo, and thus can be used to further investigate this promising imaging technique.
