The electronic structures of a wide range of early transition-metal (TM) compounds, including Ti and V oxides with metal valences ranging from 2+ to 5+ and formal d-electron numbers ranging from 0 to 2, have been investigated by a configuration-interaction cluster model analysis of the core-level metal 2p x-ray photoemission spectra (XPS). Inelastic energy-loss backgrounds calculated from experimentally measured electron-energy-loss spectra (EELS) were subtracted from the XPS spectra to remove extrinsic loss features. Parameter values deduced for the charge-transfer energy Delta and the d-d Coulomb repulsion energy U are shown to continue the systematic trends established previously for the late TM compounds, giving support to a charge-transfer mechanism for the satellite structures. The early TM compounds are characterized by a large metal d-ligand p hybridization energy, resulting in strong covalency in these compounds. Values for Delta and U suggest that many early TM compounds should be reclassified as intermediate between the charge-transfer regime and the Mott-Hubbard regime.

A powder neutron diffraction study was carried out on 0.8BiFeO(3)-0.2PbTiO(3) in the temperature range 27-1000 degrees C. The system exhibits magnetic transition at similar to 300 degrees C and a rhombohedral (R3c)-cubic (Pm3m) ferroelectric phase transition at similar to 650 degrees C. Anomalous variation in the lattice parameters and the octahedral tilt angle is observed across the magnetic transition temperature. In the magnetic phase, the c parameter is contracted and the octahedral tilt angle is slightly increased. The results suggest coupling between the spin, lattice and structural degrees of freedom. The free-base, copper(II) and zinc(II) derivatives of 5,10,15,20-tetraarylporphyrin (aryl = phenyl, 4-methylphenyl or 4-chlorophenyl) and the corresponding brominated 2,3,7,8,12,13,17,18-octabromo-5,10,15,20-tetraarylporphyrin derivatives have been synthesized and their spectral and redox properties compared by UV/VIS, H-1 NMR, ESR and cyclic voltammetric methods. Substitution with the electron-withdrawing bromine groups at the pyrrole carbons has a profound influence on the UV/VIS and H-1 NMR spectral features and also on the redox potentials of these systems. On the other hand, electron-withdrawing chloro or electron-donating methyl groups at the para positions of the four phenyl rings have only a marginal effect on the spectra and redox potentials of both the brominated and the non-brominated derivatives. The ESR data for the copper(II) derivatives of ail these systems reveal that substitution at either the beta-pyrrole carbons and/or the para positions of the meso-phenyl groups does not significantly affect the spin-Hamiltonian parameters that describe the metal centre in each case. Collectively, these observations suggest that the highest-occupied (HOMO) and lowest-unoccupied molecular orbitals (LUMO) of the octabromoporphyrins involve the porphyrin pi-ring system as is the case with the non-brominated derivatives.-Investigations have been carried out to probe the electronic structures of these systems by three different approaches involving spectral and redox potential data as well as AMI calculations. The results obtained suggest that the electron-withdrawing beta-bromine substituents stabilize the LUMOs and, to a lesser degree, the HOMOs and that the extent of these changes can be fine-tuned, in a subtle way, by substituting at the meso-aryl rings of a given porphyrin.

It has been noted that at high energy the Ricci scalar is manifested in two different ways, as a matter field as well as a geometrical field (which is its usual nature even at low energy). Here, using the material aspect of the Ricci scalar, its interaction with Dirac spinors is considered in four-dimensional curved spacetime. We find that a large number of fermion-antifermion pairs can be produced by the exponential expansion of the early universe.

An analytical surface-ray tracing has been carried out for the prolate ellipsoid of revolution using a novel geodesic constant method. This method yields closed form expressions for all the ray-geometric parameters required for the UTD mutual coupling calculations for the antennas located arbitrarily in three dimensions, on the ellipsoid of revolution.

Anomalous changes in the infrared intensity of the cobalt-oxygen stretching modes in the infrared spectrum of lanthanum cobaltate (LaCoO3) suggest vibronic coupling. This phenomenon has been studied by infrared vibrational spectroscopy both by temperature-induced changes of spin-state occupation and pressure-induced changes of the crystal field splitting 10Dq.

We report a systematic study of the electronic transport properties of the metallic perovskite oxide LaNiO3-delta as a function of the oxygen stoichiometry delta (delta less than or equal to 0.14). The electrical resistivity, magnetoresistance, susceptibility, Hall effect and thermopower have been studied, All of the transport coefficients are dependent on the value of delta. The resistivity increases almost exponentially as delta increases. We relate this increase in rho to the creation of Ni2+ with square-planar coordination. We find that there is a distinct T-1.5-contribution to the resistivity over the whole temperature range. The thermopower is negative, as expected for systems with electrons as the carrier, but the Hall coefficient is positive. We have given a qualitative and quantitative explanation for the different quantities observed and their systematic variation with the stoichiometry delta.

A simple route for tailoring emissions in the visible wavelength region by chemically coupling quantum dots composed of ZnSe and CdS is reported. coupled quantum dots offer a novel route for tuning electronic transitions via band-offset engineering at the material interface. This novel class of asymmetric. coupled quantum structures may offer a basis for a diverse set of building blocks for optoelectronic devices, ultrahigh density memories, and quantum information processing.

Oxides of the general formula La2-2xSr2xCu1-xII,M(x)(IV)O(4) (M = Ti, Mn, Fe, or Ru), crystallizing in the tetragonal K,NIF, structure, have been synthesized. For M=Ti, only the x=0,5 member could be prepared, while for M=Mn and Fe, the composition range is 0

A detailed study of the layered manganite La1+xSr2-xMn2O7 has been performed, establishing that within the composition range 0.1 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.45 the phases crystallize in the I4/mmm space group. The evolution of structural parameters with x: in this composition range has been followed using a novel application of an existing program for the Rietveld analysis of powder diffraction data. The structure, a familiar intergrowth of rock-salt (La,Sr)O slabs and double perovskite (La,Sr)(2)Mn2O6 units, is characterized by a reluctance to deform the latter. This manifests as a ''pumping'' of the larger Sr-II ion into the 12-coordinate site of the structure as x is increased. We report these features of the structure as well as electrical transport and magnetic properties, in light of recent observations of giant, negative magnetoresistance in these systems.

A detailed investigation of viscosity dependence of the isomerization rate is carried out for continuous potentials by using a fully microscopic, self-consistent mode-coupling theory calculation of both the friction on the reactant and the viscosity of the medium. In this calculation we avoid approximating the short time response by the Enskog limit, which overestimates the friction at high frequencies. The isomerization rate is obtained by using the Grote-Hynes formula. The viscosity dependence of the rate has been investigated for a large number of thermodynamic state points. Since the activated barrier crossing dynamics probes the high-frequency frictional response of the liquid, the barrier crossing rate is found to be sensitive to the nature of the reactant-solvent interaction potential. When the solute-solvent interaction is modeled by a 6-12 Lennard-Jones potential, we find that over a large variation of viscosity (eta), the rate (k) can indeed be fitted very well to a fractional viscosity dependence: (k similar to eta(-alpha)), with the exponent alpha in the range 1 greater than or equal to alpha >0. The calculated values of the exponent appear to be in very good agreement with many experimental results. In particular, the theory, for the first time, explains the experimentally observed high value of alpha even at the barrier frequency, omega(b). similar or equal to 9 X 10(12) s(-1) for the isomerization reaction of 2-(2'-propenyl)anthracene in liquid eta-alkanes. The present study can also explain the reason for the very low value of vb observed in another study for the isomerization reaction of trans-stilbene in liquid n-alkanes. For omega(b) greater than or equal to 2.0 X 10(13) s(-1), we obtain alpha similar or equal to 0, which implies that the barrier crossing rate becomes identical to the transition-state theory predictions. A careful analysis of isomerization reaction dynamics involving large amplitude motion suggests that the barrier crossing dynamics itself may become irrelevant in highly viscous liquids and the rate might again be coupled directly to the viscosity. This crossover is predicted to be strongly temperature dependent and could be studied by changing the solvent viscosity by the application of pressure. (C) 1999 American Institute of Physics. Inelastic light scattering studies on a single crystal of electron-doped Ca(Fe0.95Co0.05)(2)As-2 superconductor, covering the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural transition as well as the magnetic transition at T-SM similar to 140 K and the superconducting transition temperature T-c similar to 23 K, reveal evidence for superconductivity-induced phonon renormalization. In particular, the phonon mode near 260 cm(-1) shows hardening below T-c, signaling its coupling with the superconducting gap. All three Raman active phonon modes show anomalous temperature dependence between room temperature and T-c, i.e. the phonon frequency decreases with lowering temperature. Further, the frequency of one of the modes shows a sudden change in temperature dependence at TSM. Using first-principles density functional theory based calculations, we show that the low temperature phase (T-c < T < T-SM) exhibits short-ranged stripe antiferromagnetic ordering, and estimate the spin-phonon couplings that are responsible for these phonon anomalies.

Fluorene and its derivatives are well-known organic semiconducting materials in the field of opto-electronic devices because of their charge transport properties. Three new organic semiconducting materials, namely, 2,2'-((9,9-butyl-9H-fluorene-2,7-diyl)bis(4,1 phenylene))bisbenzod]thiazole, C4; 2,2'-((octyl-9H-fluorene-2,7-diyl)bis(4,1 phenylene))bisbenzod]thiazole, C8; and 2,2'-((9,9-dodecayl-9H-fluorene-2,7-diyl)bis(4,1 phenylene))bisbenzod]thiazole, C12 with a benzothiazole-fluorene backbone, were synthesized and characterized for their photophysical properties. A phenomenon of concomitant polymorphism has been investigated in the first two derivatives (C4 and C8) and has been analyzed systematically in terms of the packing characteristics involving pi ... pi interactions. The conformational flexibility of the pi-conjugated 2,2'-(fluorene-2,7-diyl)bis(4,1 phenylene)bisbenzod]thiazole backbone coupled with orientational freedom of the terminal alkyl chains were found to be the key factors responsible for these polymorphic modifications. Attempts to grow suitable crystals for single crystal X-ray diffraction of compound C12 were unsuccessful.
