The 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT)(1A) receptor system plays a prominent role in a variety of physiological functions and behavior and regulation of this responsiveness of the receptor system has been implicated in the central regulation of water intake and urinary excretion. The lateral septal area (LSA) exhibits a high density of 5-HT1A receptors, as well as a subpopulation of oxytocin (OT) receptors. Here we report the effects of pMPPF (a selective 5-HT1A antagonist), d(CH2)(5)[Tyr(Me)(2)Thr(4), Orn(5), Tyr(NH2)(9)]-vasotocin (an OT antagonist), and that 5-HT1A receptor system is regulated as a consequence of activation of the Na+ channel by veratridine. Cannulae were implanted into the LSA of rats to enable the introduction of the drugs. Injections of 8-OH-DPAT (a 5-HT1A agonist) blocked water intake and increased urinary excretion, while pMPPF or the OT antagonist injected bilaterally before 8-OH-DPAT blocked its inhibitory effect on water intake and its diuretic effect. In contrast, increases in extracellular sodium levels induced by the sodium channel modulator, veratridine, enhanced 5-HT1A responsiveness for water intake and reduced the diuretic effects induced by 8-OH-DPAT. These trials demonstrated that the responsiveness of the 5-HT1A receptor system in the LSA can be enhanced or depressed as a consequence of an induced rise in extracellular sodium. The paraventricular nucleus (PVN) may be considered as a dynamic mosaic of chemically-specified subgroups of neurons. 5-HT1A is one of the prime receptors identified and there is expressed throughout all magnocellular regions of the PVN. Several reports have demonstrated that a subpopulation of the magnocellular neurons expressing 5-HT1A receptors are oxytocin (OT) neurons and activation of 5-HT1A receptors in the PVN increases the plasma OT. Increasing evidence shows that OT inhibits water intake and increases urinary excretion in rats. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of serotonergic 5-HT1A receptors in the lateral-medial posterior magnocellular region of the PVN in the water intake and diuresis induced by 24 h of water deprivation. Cannulae were implanted in the PVN of rats. 5-HT injections in the PVN reduced water intake and increased urinary excretion. 8-OH-DPAT (a 5-HT1A agonist) injections blocked the water intake and increased urinary output in all the periods of the observation. pMPPF (a 5-HT1A antagonist) injected bilaterally before the 8-OH-DPAT blocked its inhibitory effect on water intake and its diuretic effect. We suggest that antidipsogenic and diuretic responses seem to be mediated via 5-HT1A receptors of the lateral-medial posterior magnocellular region of the PVN in water-deprived rats. In this work, we deal with a micro electromechanical system (MEMS), represented by a micro-accelerometer. Through numerical simulations, it was found that for certain parameters, the system has a chaotic behavior. The chaotic behaviors in a fractional order are also studied numerically, by historical time and phase portraits, and the results are validated by the existence of positive maximal Lyapunov exponent. Three control strategies are used for controlling the trajectory of the system: State Dependent Riccati Equation (SDRE) Control, Optimal Linear Feedback Control, and Fuzzy Sliding Mode Control. The controls proved effective in controlling the trajectory of the system studied and robust in the presence of parametric errors.

Fractional factorial design and factorial with center point design were applied to the development of an amperometric biosensor for the detection of the hepatitis C virus. Biomolecules were immobilized by adsorption on graphite electrodes modified with siloxane-poly(propyleneoxide) hybrid matrix prepared using the sol-gel method. Several parameters were optimized, such as the streptavidin concentration at 0.01 mg mL(-1) and 1.0% bovine serum albumin, the incubation time of the electrodes in the complementary DNA solution for 30 minutes and a 1: 1500 dilution of the avidin-peroxidase conjugate, among others. The application of chemometric studies has been efficient, since the best conditions have been established with a restricted number of experiments, indicating the influence of different factors on the system.

In this-study we investigated the influence of electrolytic lesion of the lateral hypothalamus (LH) on the water and salt appetite, and the natriuretic, diuretic and cardiovascular effects induced by angiotensinergic, cholinergic and noradrenergic stimulation of the median preoptic nucleus (MnPO) in rats. Male Holtzman rats were implanted with a cannula into the MnPO. Other groups of sham- and LH-lesioned rats received a stainless steel cannula implanted into the MnPO. ANGII injection into the MnPO induced water and sodium intake, and natriuretic, diuretic, presser and tachycardic responses. Carbachol induced water intake, and natriuretic, presser and bradycardic responses, whereas noradrenaline increased urine, sodium excretion and blood pressure, and induced bradycardia. In rats submitted to LH-lesion only, water and sodium intake was reduced compared with sham rats. LH lesion also reduced the sodium ingestion induced by ANGII (12 ng) into the MnPO. In LH-lesioned rats, the dipsogenic, diuretic and presser responses induced by ANGII (12 ng), carbachol (2 nmol) and noradrenaline (20 nmol) injection into the MnPO were reduced. The same occurred with sodium excretion when carbachol (2 nmol) and noradrenaline (20 nmol) were injected into the MnPO of LH-lesioned rats, whereas ANGII(12 ng) induced an increase in sodium excretion. These data show that electrolytic lesion of the LH reduces fluid and sodium intake, and presser responses to angiotensinergic, cholinergic and noradrenergic activation of the MnPO. LH involvement with MnPO excitatory and inhibitory mechanisms related to water and sodium intake, sodium excretion and cardiovascular control is suggested.

We investigated the effects of estrogen on sodium intake and excretion induced by angiotensin II (ANG II), atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) or ANG II plus ANP injected into the median preoptic nucleus (MnPO). Female Holtzman rats weighing 250-300 g were used. Sodium ingestion and excretion 120 min after the injection of 0.5 mu l of 0.15 M NaCl into the MnPO were 0.3 +/- 0.1 ml (N = 12) and 29 +/- 7 mu Eq in intact rats, 0.5 +/- 0.2 ml (N = 10) and 27 +/- 6 mu Eq in ovariectomized rats, and 0.2 +/- 0.08 (N = 11) and 38 +/- 8 mu Eq in estrogen-treated ovariectomized (50 mu g/day for 21 days) rats, respectively. ANG II (21 mu M) injection in intact, ovariectomized, and estrogen-treated ovariectomized rats increased sodium intake (3.8 +/- 0.4, 1.8 +/- 0.3 and 1.2 +/- 0.2 ml/120 min, respectively) (N = 11) and increased sodium excretion (166 +/- 18, 82 +/- 22 and 86 +/- 12 mu Eq/120 min, respectively) (N = 11). ANP (65 mu M) injection in intact (N = 11), ovariectomized(N = 10)and estrogen-treated ovariectomized (N = 10) rats increased sodium intake (1.4 +/- 0.2, 1.8 +/- 0.3, and 1.7 +/- 0.3 ml/120 min, respectively) and sodium excretion (178 +/- 19, 187 +/- 9, and 232 +/- 29 mu Eq/120 min, respectively). Concomitant injection of ANG II and ANP into the MnPO of intact (N = 12), ovariectomized (N = 10) and estrogentreated ovariectomized (N = 10) rats caused smaller effects than those produced by each peptide given alone: 1.3 +/- 0.2, 0.9 +/- 0.2 and 0.3 +/- 0.1 ml/120 min for sodium intake, respectively, and 86 +/- 9, 58 +/- 7, and 22 +/- 4 mu Eq/120 min for sodium excretion, respectively. Taken together, these results demonstrate that there is an antagonistic interaction of ANP and ANG II on sodium intake and excretion, and that reproductive hormones affect this interaction.

Despite the great importance of ion transport, most of the widely accepted models and theories are valid only in the not very practical limit of low concentrations. Aiming to extend the range of applicability to moderate concentrations, a number of modified models and equations (some approximate, some fundamented on different assumptions, and some just empirical) have been reported. In this work, a general treatment for the electrical conductivity of ionic solutions has been developed, considering the electrical conductivity as a transport phenomenon governed by dissipation and feedback. A general expression for the dependence of the specific conductivity on the solution viscosity (and indirectly on concentration), from which the whole conductivity curve can be obtained, has been derived. The validity of this general approach is demonstrated with experimental results taken from the literature for aqueous and nonaqueous solutions of electrolytes.
