Molecular evidence of mother-to-child transmission of HTLV-IIc in the Kararao Village (Kayapo) in the Amazon Region of Brazil

Blood samples from native Indians in the Kararao village (Kayapo), were analysed using serological and molecular methods to characterize infection and analyse transmission of HTLV-II. Specific reactivity was observed in 3/26 individuals, of which two samples were from a mother and child. RFLP analysis of the pX and env regions confirmed HTLV-II infection. Nucleotide sequence of the 5' LTR segment and phylogenetic analysis showed a high similarity (98%) between the three samples and prototype HTLV-IIa (Mot), and confirmed the occurrence of the HTLV-IIc subtype. There was a high genetic similarity (99.9%) between the mother and child samples and the only difference was a deletion of two nucleotides (TC) in the mother sequence. Previous epidemiological studies among native Indians from Brazil have provided evidence of intrafamilial and vertical transmission of HTLV-IIc. The present study now provides molecular evidence of mother-to-child transmission of HTLV-IIc, a mechanism that is in large part responsible for the endemicity of HTLV in these relatively closed populations. Although the actual route of transmission is unknown, breast feeding would appear to be most likely.

Outbreak of aggressions and transmission of rabies in human beings by vampire bats in northeastern Brazil

Outbreaks of attacks upon human beings by vampire bats seems to be a common phenomenon in several regions of Latin America, but the occurrence of rabies infection among humans bled by vampires, is relatively low. In the present study, two outbreaks of human rabies transmitted by common vampire bats (Desmodus rotundus) are described from Bahia State, Northeasthern Brazil, in 1991 and 1992. The first was recorded in Aporá where 308 people were bled by vampire bats and three of these die from this zoonosis. The 2nd outbreak occurred in Conde where only five people were bled by vampires, and two deaths by rabies were registered. Our data suggest that rabies transmitted by bats basically depends on the presence of virus in the vampire bat population and not on the number of humans bled by them.

Documenting InStory – Mobile Storytelling in a Cultural Heritage Environment

This paper describes the process and problems that had to be faced during the elaboration of a digital interactive narrative for the Instory project (http://img.di.fct.unl.pt/InStory/) implanted in «Quinta da Regaleira», Sintra, Portugal, and classified as World Heritage by Unesco. It also explores some of the practical and theoretical issues in what regards the literary terminology and strategies involved.

Chagas' disease: study of congenital transmission in cases of acute maternal infection

We studied three pregnant women with acute chagasic infection. Two patients, infected in the third trimester of pregnancy, had uninfected children. The third patient, infected earlier, had an infected newborn. These results encourage research on risk factors of transmission and on medical decisions concerning pregnant women with acute Chagas' disease.

Vertical transmission of Cryptococcus neoformans from a mother coinfected with human immunodeficiency virus: case report

Disseminated infection with Cryptococcus neoformans was observed in a newborn infant who presented fever and respiratory symptoms since the 52nd day of life. The mother was infected by human immunodeficiency virus and presented pulmonary and meningeal cryptococcal infection. This is a rare case of cryptococcal infection with probable maternal-fetal transmission.

A importância dos fenómenos artísticos contemporâneos na formação do animador cultural

Esta nossa proposta pretende reflectir sobre a importância dos fenómenos artísticos dos anos 60 aos nossos dias na formação do animador cultural. É nossa intenção demonstrar que a relação do animador cultural com as práticas artísticas contemporâneas, em articulação com o de outros profissionais ligados à produção artística, pode contribuir para uma maior aproximação do público em relação às obras de arte. A distância e incompreensão do público conduziu à formação de alguns mitos, na maior parte com origem na falta de formação estética e artística das populações em relação à arte e à obra de arte, à ausência de interesse em participar na discussão sobre O que é a arte? e, em particular na questão O que é a obra de arte hoje? Este é outro dos objectivos desta intervenção: justificar esta especificidade cronológica, ou seja, porque é que as obras de arte produzidas a partir dos anos 60 a esta parte exigem mecanismos de fruição e participação por parte do público distintos dos exigidos em obras de arte produzidas até aos finais do séc. XIX. O animador cultural tem, neste âmbito, um papel significativo porque a sua maior ou menor familiarização com as práticas artísticas da contemporaneidade vai orientar também os seus projectos, no sentido em que contribui para alargar os tipos de público com que trabalha e contextualizar a participação dos vários intervenientes. Neste âmbito, serão apresentadas de forma muito breve algumas obras de arte e lançadas pistas de abordagem para a sua problematização, de modo a promover uma aproximação participativa e crítica às práticas artísticas contemporâneas do animador e dos públicos com que ele trabalha.

Nosocomial Mycobacterium tuberculosis transmission among healthcare students in a high incidence region, in Vitória, State of Espírito Santo

This open comparative study for evaluating hypersensitivity to tuberculin among medical students (n=441), nursing students (n=178) and economics students (n=230) in Vitória, State of Espírito Santo, had the aim of assessing whether the prevalence of positive tuberculin tests among healthcare students could be used as a sentinel event for nosocomial transmission in localities with high endemicity. There was a significant change in the frequency of purified protein derivative reactivity in the nursing students (20. 3%) and medical students (18. 4%), in comparison with the economics students (6%) (p <0. 001). As expected, the medical and nursing students had more knowledge about tuberculosis than did the economics students (p <0. 001). Our data suggest that the incidence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection among nursing and medical students in our region, which has high endemicity of tuberculosis, does not differ from what is found in low-incidence countries. These data reinforce the need for implementing biosafety programs for this target population.

O Município de Odivelas e as Práticas de Cultura. Um Estudo de Caso: O Centro Cultural da Malaposta (2007-2012)

O equipamento cultural de referência para este trabalho de projeto é o Centro Cultural da Malaposta, que constitui um exemplo de investimento autárquico na reabilitação de um edifício para a criação de infraestruturas destinadas à produção e à fruição artística e cultural. Trata-se de um equipamento cultural criado há cerca de 25 anos, que é tutelado pelo município de Odivelas. Descreve-se a evolução da instituição e apresenta-se uma análise da programação cultural deste equipamento, em 6 anos, entre 2007 e 2012.
