The aim of this study was to analyze the influence of position and pauses on muscle activity and fatigue during the task of ironing. Ten female participants performed the task of ironing in two different positions (standing and sitting) for 10 min each with a 1-min pause at the end of each task. Muscle activity and fatigue from the upper trapezium, anterior deltoid, and pectoralis major were analyzed using surface electromyography. The results showed that the positions had no significant influence on muscle activity; nevertheless, they had significant influence on muscular fatigue. In addition, the pauses were possibly beneficial in decreasing the muscle fatigue, but the results were not conclusive.

Consider the problem of determining a task-toprocessor assignment for a given collection of implicit-deadline sporadic tasks upon a multiprocessor platform in which there are two distinct kinds of processors. We propose a polynomialtime approximation scheme (PTAS) for this problem. It offers the following guarantee: for a given task set and a given platform, if there exists a feasible task-to-processor assignment, then given an input parameter, ϵ, our PTAS succeeds, in polynomial time, in finding such a feasible task-to-processor assignment on a platform in which each processor is 1+3ϵ times faster. In the simulations, our PTAS outperforms the state-of-the-art PTAS [1] and also for the vast majority of task sets, it requires significantly smaller processor speedup than (its upper bound of) 1+3ϵ for successfully determining a feasible task-to-processor assignment.

Secure group communication is a paradigm that primarily designates one-to-many communication security. The proposed works relevant to secure group communication have predominantly considered the whole network as being a single group managed by a central powerful node capable of supporting heavy communication, computation and storage cost. However, a typical Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) may contain several groups, and each one is maintained by a sensor node (the group controller) with constrained resources. Moreover, the previously proposed schemes require a multicast routing support to deliver the rekeying messages. Nevertheless, multicast routing can incur heavy storage and communication overheads in the case of a wireless sensor network. Due to these two major limitations, we have reckoned it necessary to propose a new secure group communication with a lightweight rekeying process. Our proposal overcomes the two limitations mentioned above, and can be applied to a homogeneous WSN with resource-constrained nodes with no need for a multicast routing support. Actually, the analysis and simulation results have clearly demonstrated that our scheme outperforms the previous well-known solutions.

Graphics processors were originally developed for rendering graphics but have recently evolved towards being an architecture for general-purpose computations. They are also expected to become important parts of embedded systems hardware -- not just for graphics. However, this necessitates the development of appropriate timing analysis techniques which would be required because techniques developed for CPU scheduling are not applicable. The reason is that we are not interested in how long it takes for any given GPU thread to complete, but rather how long it takes for all of them to complete. We therefore develop a simple method for finding an upper bound on the makespan of a group of GPU threads executing the same program and competing for the resources of a single streaming multiprocessor (whose architecture is based on NVIDIA Fermi, with some simplifying assunptions). We then build upon this method to formulate the derivation of the exact worst-case makespan (and corresponding schedule) as an optimization problem. Addressing the issue of tractability, we also present a technique for efficiently computing a safe estimate of the worstcase makespan with minimal pessimism, which may be used when finding an exact value would take too long.

In embedded systems, the timing behaviour of the control mechanisms are sometimes of critical importance for the operational safety. These high criticality systems require strict compliance with the offline predicted task execution time. The execution of a task when subject to preemption may vary significantly in comparison to its non-preemptive execution. Hence, when preemptive scheduling is required to operate the workload, preemption delay estimation is of paramount importance. In this paper a preemption delay estimation method for floating non-preemptive scheduling policies is presented. This work builds on [1], extending the model and optimising it considerably. The preemption delay function is subject to a major tightness improvement, considering the WCET analysis context. Moreover more information is provided as well in the form of an extrinsic cache misses function, which enables the method to provide a solution in situations where the non-preemptive regions sizes are small. Finally experimental results from the implementation of the proposed solutions in Heptane are provided for real benchmarks which validate the significance of this work.

Securing group communication in wireless sensor networks has recently been extensively investigated. Many works have addressed this issue, and they have considered the grouping concept differently. In this paper, we consider a group as being a set of nodes sensing the same data type, and we alternatively propose an efficient secure group communication scheme guaranteeing secure group management and secure group key distribution. The proposed scheme (RiSeG) is based on a logical ring architecture, which permits to alleviate the group controller’s task in updating the group key. The proposed scheme also provides backward and forward secrecy, addresses the node compromise attack, and gives a solution to detect and eliminate the compromised nodes. The security analysis and performance evaluation show that the proposed scheme is secure, highly efficient, and lightweight. A comparison with the logical key hierarchy is preformed to prove the rekeying process efficiency of RiSeG. Finally, we present the implementation details of RiSeG on top of TelosB sensor nodes to demonstrate its feasibility.

The Upper Jurassic evolution of the Lusitanian Basin is shown to be linked to the rifting phase which preceded the separation of Iberia and the Grand Banks. Structural controls on sedimentation include both NNE-SSW trending faults in the Hercynian basement, and contemporaneous movement of salt diapirs. At the beginning of Upper Oxfordian times, the entire basin had been levelled to within a few metres of sea level, so that the freshwater algal marsh and marginal marine facies of the Cabaços and Vale Verde Beds rest on Triassic to Callovian strata. In the latter part of the Upper Oxfordian. carbonate sedimentation continued, with fluctuating salinity lagoons in the north (Pholodomya protei Beds) separated from shallow open marine carbonates in the south (Montejunto Beds) by the Caldas da Rainha diapir-barrier island complex. The commencement of rifting is recorded in the Kimmeridgian by the sudden influx of terrigenous clastics (developed in both fluviatile and deltaic/submarine fan environments) and accelerated depositional rates in excess of 10cm/10 k.yrs in association with contemporaneous faulting along the SE margin of the Arruda sub-basin. The Caldas-Santa Cruz chain of diapiric structures continued to influence the distribution of carbonate and clastic sediments. In the Portlandian, a simpler facies pattern occurs, with fluviatile clastics interfingering to the south with shallow low energy carbonates.

"Many-core” systems based on the Network-on- Chip (NoC) architecture have brought into the fore-front various opportunities and challenges for the deployment of real-time systems. Such real-time systems need timing guarantees to be fulfilled. Therefore, calculating upper-bounds on the end-to-end communication delay between system components is of primary interest. In this work, we identify the limitations of an existing approach proposed by [1] and propose different techniques to overcome these limitations.

Contention on the memory bus in COTS based multicore systems is becoming a major determining factor of the execution time of a task. Analyzing this extra execution time is non-trivial because (i) bus arbitration protocols in such systems are often undocumented and (ii) the times when the memory bus is requested to be used are not explicitly controlled by the operating system scheduler; they are instead a result of cache misses. We present a method for finding an upper bound on the extra execution time of a task due to contention on the memory bus in COTS based multicore systems. This method makes no assumptions on the bus arbitration protocol (other than assuming that it is work-conserving).

XRD-analyses of pelitic deposits of Upper Jurassic to Miocene age occuring in the eastern Algarve (Portugal), give evidence of the occurrence of detrital clay minerals of continental origin as well as of conspicuous neoformations of marine provenance. The vertical succession of clay-mineral associations indicates the existence of three distinctive evolutionary cycles which are thought to reflect tectonically controlled transgressive-regressive events.

The synthetic study of the uppermost Cretaceous of the Beira Litoral (fauna, flora) confirms its upper Campanian-Maastrichtian age. It shows the presence of a tropical to subtropical climate in an area constituted by a low coastal plain only occasionally linked to the sea, saturated with fresh water and possessing accordingly, a predominantely freshwater fauna (Viso, Aveiro); this plain changed towards the interior into a drier more forested zone with a more abundant terrestrial fauna which includes mammals (Taveiro). A thorough study of the chelonian Rosasia, abundant on the coastal plain, was made possible thanks to the discovery of a skull: it demonstrates that the genus belongs to the family Bothremydidae, revalided here. The composition of this family is presented, its phylogenetic and paleobiogeographic relation with the other pleurodires are analyzed, and its diagnosis established. The family is constituted of three groups; Rosasia belongs to one of these, the Bothremys group.

Consider a wireless network where links may be unidirectional, that is, a computer node A can broadcast a message and computer node B will receive this message but if B broadcasts then A will not receive it. Assume that messages have deadlines. We propose a medium access control (MAC) protocol which replicates a message in time with carefully selected pauses between replicas, and in this way it guarantees that for every message at least one replica of that message is transmitted without collision. The protocol ensures this with no knowledge of the network topology and it requires neither synchronized clocks nor carrier sensing capabilities. We believe this result is significant because it is the only MAC protocol that offers an upper bound on the message queuing delay for unidirectional links without relying on synchronized clocks.

The study of new abundant coral crops and a systematic revision of the historic collections allow us to extend significantly the data about the Upper Oligocene and Miocene Scleractinia of the French atlantic basins. The SW and W-NW France faunas have been considered, and complete lists of the different defined taxa are presented. The generallines of the evolution of this group are specified, and linked to the paleoclimatic and paleobiogeographic changes.

OBJECTIVE To compare the effectiveness of two speech therapy interventions, vocal warm-up and breathing training, focusing on teachers’ voice quality.METHODS A single-blind, randomized, parallel clinical trial was conducted. The research included 31 20 to 60-year old teachers from a public school in Salvador, BA, Northeasatern Brazil, with minimum workloads of 20 hours a week, who have or have not reported having vocal alterations. The exclusion criteria were the following: being a smoker, excessive alcohol consumption, receiving additional speech therapy assistance while taking part in the study, being affected by upper respiratory tract infections, professional use of the voice in another activity, neurological disorders, and history of cardiopulmonary pathologies. The subjects were distributed through simple randomization in groups vocal warm-up (n = 14) and breathing training (n = 17). The teachers’ voice quality was subjectively evaluated through the Voice Handicap Index (Índice de Desvantagem Vocal, in the Brazilian version) and computerized voice analysis (average fundamental frequency, jitter, shimmer, noise, and glottal-to-noise excitation ratio) by speech therapists.RESULTS Before the interventions, the groups were similar regarding sociodemographic characteristics, teaching activities, and vocal quality. The variations before and after the intervention in self-assessment and acoustic voice indicators have not significantly differed between the groups. In the comparison between groups before and after the six-week interventions, significant reductions in the Voice Handicap Index of subjects in both groups were observed, as wells as reduced average fundamental frequencies in the vocal warm-up group and increased shimmer in the breathing training group. Subjects from the vocal warm-up group reported speaking more easily and having their voices more improved in a general way as compared to the breathing training group.CONCLUSIONS Both interventions were similar regarding their effects on the teachers’ voice quality. Introdução: Por mais de uma década assumiu-se que o transverso abdominal/oblíquo interno (TrA/OI) se comportava como um ventre muscular único, pré-ativando-se bilateralmente de forma simultânea para aumentar a stiffness da coluna lombar, conferindo-lhe estabilidade segmentar durante o movimento de um dos membros superiores. À luz dos estudos atuais sabe-se que tal mecanismo não ocorre, uma vez que o TrA/OI apresenta uma ativação por mecanismo de feedforward predominantemente contralateral ao membro superior movido. Apesar de morfologicamente o TrA/OI do lado não-dominante ser mais hipertrofiado do que o do lado dominante, nada se sabe acerca da influência da dominância nos timings ativação do TrA/OI. Objectivos: Confirmar se o TrA/OI tem um timing de ativação assimétrico durante o movimento rápido de flexão do membro superior (MRMS). Pretende-se ainda avaliar se o timing de ativação do TrA/OI é influenciado pela dominância de lateralidade manual. Métodos: Efectuou-se um estudo observacional descritivo, transversal e duplamente cego com 32 atletas de futebol voluntários com membro superior direito dominante, colocando-os apenas num grupo. Procedeu-se à recolha do sinal eletromiográfico de forma a avaliar os timings de ativação do TrA/OI bilateralmente aquando dos movimentos rápidos de flexão de ambos os membros superiores, à vez. Todos os dados foram tratados estatisticamente com o programa SPSS, versão 20.0 para Mac OS, com um grau de significância de 0,05. Resultados: Verificaram-se diferenças nos timings de ativação dos TrA/OI direito e esquerdo durante os MRMS direito e esquerdo (Teste ANOVA medidas repetidas: F=291,087; p<0,001). O timing de ativação do TrA/OI direito – 29,15(13,15)ms – foi superior ao esquerdo – 4,71(17,32)ms – durante MRMS direito (Teste Post Hoc Bonferroni: p<0,001). O timing de ativação do TrA/OI esquerdo – 31,98(12,50)ms – foi superior ao direito – 12,20(17,40)ms – durante MRMS esquerdo (p<0,001). O timing de ativação do TrA/IO direito aquando do MRMS direito foi superior ao observado durante MRMS esquerdo (p<0,001). O contrário sucedeu em relação ao timing ativação do TrA/IO esquerdo (p<0,001). O timing de ativação do TrA/IO esquerdo no MRMS direito foi inferior ao do TrA/IO direito aquando do movimento com o membro esquerdo (p<0,001). O TrA/IO direito possuiu um timing de ativação no MRMS direito inferior ao do TrA/IO esquerdo aquando do movimento com o membro esquerdo (p<0,001). Conclusão: Através deste estudo pôde-se concluir que o TrA/OI contralateral ao MRMS apresenta um timing de ativação inferior ao ipsilateral e ainda que durante o MRMS dominante o TrA/OI esquerdo e direito apresentam um timing de ativação inferior ao ocorrido durante o MRMS não-dominante.
