An Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) communication system with a transmitter and a receiver. The transmitter is arranged to transmit channel estimation sequences on each of a plurality of band groups, or bands, and to transmit data on each of the band groups or bands. The receiver is arranged to receive the channel estimation sequences for each band group or band to calculate channel state information from each of the channel estimation sequences transmitted on that band group or band and to form an average channel state information. The receiver receives the transmitted data, transforms the received data into the frequency domain, equalizes the received data using the channel state information, demaps the equalized data to re-construct the received data as soft bits and modifies the soft bits using the averaged channel state information.

The 2002 U.S. Farm Bill (the Farm Security and Rural Investment Act or FSRIA) provides considerably more government subsidies for U.S. agriculture than Congress envisaged when it passed the preceding 1996–2002 FAIR Act. We review the FAIR record, showing how government subsidies increased greatly beyond those originally scheduled. For FSRIA, we outline key commodity, trade, and conservation and environmental provisions. We expect that the commodity programmes will: (a) encourage production when the market calls for less; (b) significantly increase subsidies over FAIR baseline subsidies; (c) press against current WTO and possible Doha Round support limits; and (d) aggravate trading partners. Finally, we suggest two lessons from the U.S. policy experience that might benefit those working on CAP and WTO reform. First, past research shows that farm programmes have little to do with the economic health of rural communities. Second, programme transparency, and especially public disclosure of the level of payments going to individual farmers, by name, influences the farm policy debate. Personalized data show what economists have long maintained—that the bulk of programme benefits go to a relatively few, large, producers—but do so in a way that captures the public and policy-makers' attention

A useful way of summarizing genetic variability among different populations is through estimates of the inbreeding coefficient, F-st. Several recent studies have tried to use the distribution of estimates of F-st from individual genetic loci to detect the effects of natural selection. However, the promise of this approach has yet to be fully realized owing to the pervasive dogma that this distribution is highly dependent on demographic history. Here, I review recent theoretical results that indicate that the distribution of estimates of F-st is generally expected to be robust to the vagaries of demographic history. I suggest that analyses based on it provide a useful first step for identifying candidate genes that might be under selection, and explore the ways in which this information can be used in ecological and evolutionary studies.
Recent developments in genetic data analysis: what can they tell us about human demographic history?

Over the last decade, a number of new methods of population genetic analysis based on likelihood have been introduced. This review describes and explains the general statistical techniques that have recently been used, and discusses the underlying population genetic models. Experimental papers that use these methods to infer human demographic and phylogeographic history are reviewed. It appears that the use of likelihood has hitherto had little impact in the field of human population genetics, which is still primarily driven by more traditional approaches. However, with the current uncertainty about the effects of natural selection, population structure and ascertainment of single-nucleotide polymorphism markers, it is suggested that likelihood-based methods may have a greater impact in the future.

The present invention provides Inter alia, a method for the production of cotton somatic embryos comprising (a) isolating a totipotent stomatal cell-containing epidermal explant from leaf material excised from a cotton plant; and (b) culturing said explant in a basal medium which comprises an embryogenic callus-inducing quantity of an auxin and a cytokinin under an embryogenic callus inducing intensity of light until embryogenic callus is formed; and (c) sub-culturing said embryogenic callus onto a somatic embryo differentiation media to produce said somatic embryos. Plants may be regenerated from the somatic embryos and in a particular embodiment of the invention said totipotent stomatal cell is transformed, prior to the inducement of embryogenic callus, with a polynucleotide that provides for a desired agronomic trait.

The zinc and cadmium ethylxanthate complexes of N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediamine (TMEDA), [M(S2COEt)(2)TMEDA], were synthesized and characterized with infrared, H-1 and C-13 NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and X-ray crystallography. Whereas the cadmium complex has a six-coordinate {CdS4N2} centre with bidentate xanthate ligands, the zinc complex contains four coordinate {ZnS2N2} zinc with two monodentate xanthate groups. The cadmium species [Cd(S2COEt)(2)(diamine)] (where diamine = N,N-dimethylethylenediamine or N,N'-diisopropylethylenediamine) were also synthesized. The surfactant-assisted formation of nanoparticles from [Cd(S2COEt)(2)] and [Cd(S2COEt)(2)TMEDA] was studied with TEM, XRD and XRF techniques. From [Cd(S2COEt)(2)], spherical nanoparticle aggregates 140-200 nm in diameter were obtained but from [Cd(S2COEt)(2)TMEDA], single nanoparticles were produced with estimated diameters in the range of 4-7 nm and almost no aggregation. In recent decades, immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers have sought a new way of life in large numbers, often leaving their countries of origin behind in search of places that offer a better way of life. The purpose of this study was to investigate how elementary and middle school students in state schools in Reading, England (primarily speakers of Asian languages), and Richmond, Virginia (primarily speakers of Spanish), were supported academically, when most children's first language was not English. The authors were interested in exploring whether or not there were cultural or structural differences in the way each country helped or hindered these students as they progressed through the school systems. Three UK schools in a district of approximately 100,000 and three US schools in a district of approximately 250,000 were the focus of this exploration from 2000 to 2003. Findings indicated that there were cultural and legislative differences and similarities. Teachers and administrators in both countries attempted to provide services with limited and sometimes diminishing resources. Community support varied based on resources, attitudes toward various ethnic groups, and the coping strategies adopted by these groups in their new environments. Marked differences appeared with regard to the manner in which assessments took place and how the results were made available to the public.

Successful and responsible introduction of probiotic and prebiotic products into the worldwide marketplace requires labelling for health benefits that meets consumer needs, adheres to regulatory standards and does not overextend scientific evidence. Regulations differ among countries, but underlying all is an emphasis on scientific credibility of any statements of health benefits. This paper considers the value of different types of evidence offered in substantiation of efficacy and reviews different regulatory approaches to labelling for health claims. Limitations of in vitro, animal and different types of human studies used for efficacy substantiation for probiotics and prebiotics are discussed.
