An improved higher order transverse shear deformation theory is employed to arrive at modified constitutive relations which can be used in the flexural, buckling and vibration analysis of laminated plates and shells. The strain energy for such systems is then expressed in terms of the displacements and the rotations for ready reference and use. Numerical values of vibration frequencies are obtained using this formulation employing Ritz's method of analysis. The results are compared with those available in the literature to validate the analysis presented.

Polarization properties of Gaussian laser beams are analyzed in a manner consistent with the Maxwell equations, and expressions are developed for all components of the electric and magnetic field vectors in the beam. It is shown that the transverse nature of the free electromagnetic field demands a nonzero transverse cross-polarization component in addition to the well-known component of the field vectors along the beam axis. The strength of these components in relation to the strength of the principal polarization component is established. It is further shown that the integrated strengths of these components over a transverse plane are invariants of the propagation process. It is suggested that cross- polarization measurement using a null detector can serve as a new method for accurate determination of the center of Gaussian laser beams.

In situ Raman experiments together with transport measurements have been carried out in single-walled carbon nanotubes as a function of electrochemical top gate voltage (Vg). We have used the green laser (EL=2.41 eV), where the semiconducting nanotubes of diameter ~1.4 nm are in resonance condition. In semiconducting nanotubes, the G−- and G+-mode frequencies increase by ~10 cm−1 for hole doping, the frequency shift of the G− mode is larger compared to the G+ mode at the same gate voltage. However, for electron doping the shifts are much smaller: G− upshifts by only ~2 cm−1 whereas the G+ does not shift. The transport measurements are used to quantify the Fermi-energy shift (EF) as a function of the gate voltage. The electron-hole asymmetry in G− and G+ modes is quantitatively explained using nonadiabatic effects together with lattice relaxation contribution. The electron-phonon coupling matrix elements of transverse-optic (G−) and longitudinal-optic (G+) modes explain why the G− mode is more blueshifted compared to the G+ mode at the same Vg. The D and 2D bands have different doping dependence compared to the G+ and G− bands. There is a large downshift in the frequency of the 2D band (~18 cm−1) and D (~10 cm−1) band for electron doping, whereas the 2D band remains constant for the hole doping but D upshifts by ~8 cm−1. The doping dependence of the overtone of the G bands (2G bands) shows behavior similar to the dependence of the G+ and G− bands.

Pseudotwo-dimensional wakes are generated by introducing spanwise cellular structures into an otherwise plane turbulent wake by means of the castellated blunt trailing edges of different configurations. The transverse growths of these coflowing cellular wakes are found to be independent of each other without any noticeable spanwise interaction. This wake growth is examined in the light of the plane equilibrium wake analysis. Though these wakes are not found to be exactly self-similar, their growth shows a nonmonotonous approach toward the asymptotic state appropriate to that of a plane wake. The dye emission in the wakes illustrated a coherent vortical structure in the transverse plane, similar to that of the usual two-dimensional wake, in spite of the initial spanwise irregularities.

Concrete filled steel tubular (CFST) columns are increasingly used in bridge piers and high-rise buildings due to their excellent axial load bearing capacity. These columns may experience severe damage or failure due to transverse impact of vehicle collisions. In this study, numerical investigation is carried out to evaluate the effect of carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) strengthening CFST columns under vehicular impact. The CFRP composites damage mechanisms are simulated to account four different failure criteria. The cohesive elements are introduced as interface element to properly simulate the adhesively bonded regime. Simplified vehicle model is also developed to represent real vehicle behaviour. The FE analysis results show that externally bonded CFRP composites improve the impact resistance capacity compared to bare CFST column.

We study small vibrations of cantilever beams contacting a rigid surface. We study two cases: the first is a beam that sags onto the ground due to gravity, and the second is a beam that sticks to the ground through reversible adhesion. In both cases, the noncontacting length varies dynamically. We first obtain the governing equations and boundary conditions, including a transversality condition involving an end moment, using Hamilton's principle. Rescaling the variable length to a constant value, we obtain partial differential equations with time varying coefficients, which, upon linearization, give the natural frequencies of vibration. The natural frequencies for the first case (gravity without adhesion) match that of a clamped-clamped beam of the same nominal length; frequencies for the second case, however, show no such match. We develop simple, if atypical, single degree of freedom approximations for the first modes of these two systems, which provide insights into the role of the static deflection profile, as well as the end moment condition, in determining the first natural frequencies of these systems. Finally, we consider small transverse sinusoidal forcing of the first case and find that the governing equation contains both parametric and external forcing terms. For forcing at resonance, w find that either the internal or the external forcing may dominate.

We discuss the effect of fluctuations of the random potential in directions transverse to the current flow in a modified Migdal-Kadanoff approach to probabilistic scaling of conductance with size L, in d-dimensional metallic systems. The conductance cumulants are finite and vary as Ld−1−n for n greater-or-equal, slanted 2 i.e. conductance fluctuations are constant for d = 3. The mean conductance has a non-classical correction with Image Full-size image (<1K) for d greater-or-equal, slanted 2. The form of the higher cumulants is strongly influenced by the transverse potential fluctuations and may be compared with the results of perturbative diagrammatic approaches.

The importance of interlaminar stresses has prompted a fresh look at the theory of laminated plates. An important feature in modelling such laminates is the need to provide for continuity of some strains and stresses, while at the same time allowing for the discontinuities in the others. A new modelling possibility is examined in this paper. The procedure allows for discontinuities in the in-plane stresses and transverse strains and continuity in the in-plane strains and transverse stresses. This theory is in the form of a heirarchy of formulations each representing an iterative step. Application of the theory is illustrated by considering the example of an infinite laminated strip subjected to sinusoidal loading.

A three-dimensional analysis is presented for the bending problem of finite thick plates with through-the-thickness cracks. A general solution is obtained for Navier's equations of the theory of elasticity. It is found that the in-plane stresses and the transverse normal stress at the crack front are singular with an inverse square root singularity, while the transverse shear stresses are of the order of unity. Results from a numerical study indicate that the stress intensity factor, which varies across the thickness, is influenced by the thickness ratio in a significant manner. Results from a parametric study and those from a comparative study with existing finite element values are presented.

The stress corrosion cracking (SCC) characteristics of agr-titanium sheets in a bromine-methanol solution have been studied in the annealed and cold-rolled conditions using longitudinal and transverse specimens. The times to failure for annealed longitudinal specimens were longer than those for similarly tested transverse specimens. The cold-rolled specimens developed resistance to SCC, but failed by cleavage when notched, unlike the intergranular separation in annealed titanium. The apparent activation energy was found to be texture dependent and was in the range 30 to 51 kJ mol–1 for annealed titanium, and 15kJ mol–1 for cold-rolled titanium. The dependence of SCC behaviour on the texture is related to the changes in the crack initiation times. These are caused by changes in the passivation and repassivation characteristics of the particular thickness plane. The thickness planes are identified with the help of X-ray pole figures obtained on annealed and cold-rolled material. On the basis of the activation energy and the electrochemical measurements, the mechanism of SCC in annealed titanium is identified to be the one involving stress-aided anodic dissolution. On the other hand, the results on the cold-rolled titanium are in support of the hydrogen embrittlement mechanism consisting of hydride precipitation. The cleavage planes identified from the texture data match with the reported habit planes for hydride formation.

The variation in the tensile properties at 77 K and 300 K in warm-rolled (300 K) Cd-1% Ag alloy with deformation has been studied in longitudinal as well as transverse specimens. The low-temperature yield strength increases with warm rolling without much loss in ductility. The strength at 300 K, however, decreases with heavy warm deformation. From microstructural studies and X-ray investigations, it was observed that changes in grain size and texture occur during warm rolling. Both these changes are found to be important in deciding the tensile properties. The longitudinal and transverse strengths at 77 K vary linearly with l-frac12, where l is the average grain diameter, and thus they obey the Hall-Petch relation. The Hall-Petch slope, k, is lower in specimens with favourable lcub1013rcub texture while the intercept σo is higher when the lcub0002rcub texture is less favourable.

Precise measurements of the ultrasonic velocities and thermal expansivities of amorphous Se80Te20 and Se90Te10 alloys are reported near the glass transition. The samples are produced by liquid quenching. The longitudinal and transverse velocities are measured at 10 MHz frequency using the McSkimin pulse superposition technique. The thermal expansivities, agr, are measured using a three-terminal capacitance bridge. Theagr-values show a sharp maximum near the glass transition temperature,T g. The ultrasonic velocities also show a large temperature derivative, dV/dT nearT g. The data are discussed in terms of existing theories of the glass transition. The continuous change inagr shows that the glass transition is not a first-order transition, as suggested by some theories. The samples are found to be deformed by small loads nearT g. The ultrasonic velocities and dV/dT have contributions arising from this deformation.

In aquatic systems, in-stream structures such as dams, weirs and road crossings can act as barriers to fish movement along waterways. There is a growing array of technological fish-pass solutions for the movement of fish across large structures such as weirs and dams. However, most existing weir structures lack dedicated fishways, and fish often have to rely on drowned conditions to move upstream. In order to assess the adequacy of a given or proposed weir for upstream fish passage under drowned conditions, it is necessary to determine, firstly, the hydraulic properties of the drowned weir with respect to the requirements of the fish community and, secondly, the duration and timing of drowning flows with respect to the hydrograph for the site and the likely timing of fish movements. This paper primarily addresses the first issue. A computer program has been developed and incorporated in a simple-to-operate spreadsheet for the determination of the hydraulic characteristics of a drowned weir which are important to fish movement. The program is based on a theoretical analysis of drowned weirs and subsequent extensive verification in laboratory experiments. Inputs to the program include site information comprising channel cross-section data, channel slope, and channel roughness, and weir information comprising weir height and the required minimum drowned depth over the weir for migrating fish passage. The program then calculates the flow rate at which the required level of drowning occurs, the velocity characteristics above the weir (including transverse distributions), and flow depths and velocities upstream and downstream of the weir. The paper discusses (briefly) the theoretical background of the program and its experimental verification. A case study is then presented that illustrates the use of the program in the field to assess fish passage opportunities at an existing weir and to develop a case for retrofitting a fishway. Some discussion is also provided on the contribution of a modelled drownout volume to the assessment of how significant a barrier a weir is to fish passage. It is shown that the program is an important new additional tool in the assessment of the adequacy of weir structures in providing for fish movement and informing associated fish passage solutions. This study aimed to determine: 1) the spatial patterns of hamstring activation during the Nordic hamstring exercise (NHE); 2) whether previously injured hamstrings display activation deficits during the NHE, and; 3) whether previously injured hamstrings exhibit altered cross-sectional area. Ten healthy, recreationally active males with a history of unilateral hamstring strain injury underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) of their thighs before and after 6 sets of 10 repetitions of the NHE. Transverse (T2) relaxation times of all hamstring muscles (biceps femoris long head, (BFlh); biceps femoris short head (BFsh); semitendinosus (ST); semimembranosus (SM)), were measured at rest and immediately after the NHE and cross-sectional area (CSA) was measured at rest. For the uninjured limb, the ST’s percentage increase in T2 with exercise was 16.8, 15.8 and 20.2% greater than the increases exhibited by the BFlh, BFsh and SM, respectively (p<0.002 for all). Previously injured hamstring muscles (n=10) displayed significantly smaller increases in T2 post-exercise than the homonymous muscles in the uninjured contralateral limb (mean difference -7.2%, p=0.001). No muscles displayed significant between limb differences in CSA. During the NHE, the ST is preferentially activated and previously injured hamstring muscles display chronic activation deficits compared to uninjured contralateral muscles.
