Objective. The aim of this study was to evaluate the flow rate of 3 endodontic sealers: Sealer 26, AH Plus, and MTA Obtura. Study design. According to the method proposed by the American Dental Association (ADA specification no. 57), the sealers were placed between 2 glass slabs under a weight of 120 g. The diameters of the formed discs were measured with a digital paquimeter. The test was repeated 5 times for each sealer. Results. The results were expressed as arithmetic means, and the statistical analysis was performed through Tukey test. AH Plus showed significantly superior flow rate compared with Sealer 26 and MTA Obtura. There was no statistically significant difference between flow rates presented by Sealer 26 and MTA Obtura. Conclusion. Within the limitations of this in vitro study, it was concluded that all of the the endodontic sealers tested presented greater flow than the minimum recommended in the ADA 57 specification. Introduction: Mini-implants are placed in restricted sites, requiring an accurate surgical technique. However, no systematic study has quantified technique accuracy to reliably predict the surgical risks. Therefore, a graduated 3-dimensional radiographic-surgical guide (G-RSG) was proposed, and its inaccuracy and risk index (RI) were estimated. Methods: The sample consisted of 6 subjects (4 male, 2 female), who used mini-implant anchorage. Ten drill-free screws (DFS) were placed by using the G-RSG. The central point of the mesiodistal septum width (SW) was the selected implant site on the presurgical radiograph. The distances between DFS and the adjacent teeth (5-DFS and 6-DFS) were measured to evaluate screw centralization and inaccuracy degree (ID). These distances were statistically compared by independent t tests, and inaccuracy was determined by the expression ID = (5-DFS-6-DFS)/2, which represents deviation of the mini-implant`s final position regarding the central point initially selected. Then SW, ID, and screw diameter (SO) were combined to estimate the surgical risk with RI expressed by RI = SO/SW-ID. Results: The 5-DFS and 6-DFS distances were not significantly different. The ID of the G-RSG was 0.17 mm. The low ID ensured a safe RI (<1) in spite of the restricted SW. Conclusions: The G-RSG accuracy allowed fine prediction of the final DFS position in the inter-radicular septum, with a low RI, which is a helpful tool to estimate surgical risks. Calponins are proteins present in vertebrate smooth musculature where they occur in association with thin myofilaments. Calponins are not present in vertebrate or invertebrate striated muscles. The blood fluke Schistosoma japonicum expresses a 38.3-kDa protein that bears substantial homology with vertebrate calponin and occurs entirely within smooth musculature of adults. Calponin-like immunoreactivity has been demonstrated in smooth muscles of many invertebrate phyla. The Schistosoma japonicum calponin has been localised in smooth myofibrils of adults where it is associated with myofilaments and sarcoplasmic reticulum. In this study, the ultrastructural localisation of the protein in muscles of S. japonicum cercariae is described. The protein is present in smooth muscles of the forebody and the stratified muscle of the tail. Within the stratified layer, the protein occurs predominantly in transverse arrays of sarcoplasmic reticulum. The localisation data suggest that the calponin-like protein of S. japonicum is involved in contraction of the stratified tail muscle. Furthermore, the presence of a calponin system in the stratified muscle suggests that this muscle is simply a superior form of muscle, closely related to smooth muscles that use a caldesmin-calponin system in contraction. Purpose: This prospective clinical trial compared the retention rate and caries-preventive efficacy of two types of sealant modalities over a 3-year period. Materials and Methods: Using a split-mouth randomised design, 1280 sealants were randomly applied on sound permanent second molars of 320 young patients aged between 12 and 16 years. Half of the teeth (n = 640) were sealed with a resin-modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC) (Vitremer (TM), 3M ESPE) and the other half (n = 640) with a conventional light-cure, resin-based fissure sealant (LCRB) (Fluoroshield (R), Dentsply Caulk). Teeth were evaluated at baseline, 6-, 12-, 18-, 24-, 30- and 36-month intervals with regard to retention and new caries development. Results: On the sealed occlusal surfaces after 3 years, 5.10% of RMGIC and 91.08% of LCRB sealants were totally intact and 6.37% of RMGIC and 7.65% of LCRB sealants were partially intact. New caries lesions were found in 20.06% of RMGIC sealed occlusal surfaces, compared to 8.91% for LCRB sealants. Conclusions: The findings of the present clinical study suggest that RMGIC should be used only as a transitional sealant that can be applied to newly erupting teeth throughout the eruptive process, whereas LCRB sealants are used to successfully prevent occlusal caries lesions once an effective rubber dam can be achieved. It can be concluded that there are differences between the RMGIC and LCRB sealants over a 3-year period in terms of the retention rate and caries-preventive efficacy. RMGIC can serve as a simple and economic sealing solution, however provisional. Due to its poor retention rate, periodic recalls are necessary, even after 6 months, to eventually replace the lost sealant.

Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (omega-3 PUFAs) have been widely associated to beneficial effects over different neuropathologies, but only a few studies associate them to Parkinson`s disease (PD). Rats were submitted to chronic supplementation (21-90 days of life) with fish oil, rich in omega-3 PUFAs, and were uni- or bilaterally lesioned with 4 mu g of the neurotoxin 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) in the medial forebrain bundle Although lipid incorporation was evidenced in neuronal membranes, it was not sufficient to compensate motor deficits induced by 6-OHDA. In contrast, omega-3 PUFAs were capable of reducing rotational behavior induced by apomorphine, suggesting neuroprotection over dyskinesia The beneficial effects of omega-3 PUFAs were also evident in the maintenance of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances index from animals lesioned with 6-OHDA similar to levels from SHAM and intact animals. Although omega-3 PUFAs did not modify the tyrosine hydroxylase immunoreactivity in the substantia nigra pars compacta and in the ventral tegmental area, nor the depletion of dopamine (DA) and its metabolites in the striatum, DA turnover was increased after omega-3 PUFAs chronic supplementation Therefore, it is proposed that omega-3 PUFAs action characterizes the adaptation of remaining neurons activity. altering striatal DA turnover without modifying the estimated neuronal population. Motivated by application of twisted current algebra in description of the entropy of Ads(3) black hole, we investigate the simplest twisted current algebra sl(3, c)(k)((2)). Free field representation of the twisted algebra, and the corresponding twisted Sugawara energy-momentum tensor are obtained by using three (beta, gamma) pairs and two scalar fields. Primary fields and two screening currents of the first kind are presented. (C) 2001 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

Many studies have shown that deficits in olfactory and cognitive functions precede the classical motor symptoms seen in Parkinson`s disease (PD) and that olfactory testing may contribute to the early diagnosis of this disorder. Although the primary cause of PD is still unknown, epidemiological studies have revealed that its incidence is increased in consequence of exposure to certain environmental toxins. In this study, most of the impairments presented by C57BL/6 mice infused with a single intranasal (i.n.) administration of the proneurotoxin 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) (1 mg/nostril) were similar to those observed during the early phase of PD, when a moderate loss of nigral dopamine neurons results in olfactory and memory deficits with no major motor impairments. Such infusion decreased the levels of the enzyme tyrosine hydroxylase in the olfactory bulb, striatum, and substantia nigra by means of apoptotic mechanisms, reducing dopamine concentration in different brain structures such as olfactory bulb, striatum, and prefrontal cortex, but not in the hippocampus. These findings reinforce the notion that the olfactory system represents a particularly sensitive route for the transport of neurotoxins into the central nervous system that may be related to the etiology of PD. These results also provide new insights in experimental models of PD, indicating that the i.n. administration of MPTP represents a valuable mouse model for the study of the early stages of PD and for testing new therapeutic strategies to restore sensorial and cognitive processes in PD.

Nitric oxide (NO) is thought to play a key role in the development of hypoxia-induced anapyrexia in mammals, acting on the preoptic region of the anterior hypothalamus to activate autonomic heat loss responses. Regarding behavioral thermoregulation, no data exists for NO modulation/mediation of thermoregulatory behavior changes during hypoxia. Therefore, we tested the hypothesis that NO is involved in the preferred body temperature (Tb) reduction in the hypoxic toad Chaunus schneideri (formerly Bufo paracnemis), a primarily behavioral thermoregulator. Toads equipped with a temperature probe were placed in a thermal gradient chamber, and preferred Tb was monitored continuously. We analyzed the effect of intracerebroventricular injections of the nonselective NO synthase inhibitor L-NMMA (200, 400 and 800 microg per animal) or mock cerebrospinal fluid (mCSF, vehicle) on the preferred Tb of toads. No significant difference in preferred Tb was observed after L-NMMA treatments. Another group of toads treated with 2 mg kg(-1) (400 microg per animal) of L-NMMA or mCSF was submitted to hypoxia (3% inspired 02) for 8 h. The vehicle group showed a reduction of preferred Tb, a response that was inhibited by L-NMMA. A 3rd group of hypoxic animals was injected with Ringer or L-NMMA (2 mg kg(-1)) into the lymph sac and both treatments induced no change in the anapyretic response to hypoxia. These results indicate that NO acting on the central nervous system has an excitatory role for the development of hypoxia-induced anapyrexia in toads. (C) 2008 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Objective. To evaluate the influence of shaft design on the shaping ability of 3 rotary nickel-titanium (NiTi) systems. Study design. Sixty curved mesial canals of mandibular molars were used. Specimens were scanned by spiral tomography before and after canal preparation using ProTaper, ProFile, and ProSystem GT rotary instruments. One-millimeter-thick slices were scanned from the apical end point to the pulp chamber. The cross-sectional images from the slices taken earlier and after canal preparation at the apical, coronal, and midroot levels were compared. Results. The mean working time was 137.22 +/- 5.15 s. Mean transportation, mean centering ratio, and percentage of area increase were 0.022 +/- 0.131 mm, 0.21 +/- 0.11, and 76.90 +/- 42.27%, respectively, with no statistical differences (P > .05). Conclusions. All instruments were able to shape curved mesial canals in mandibular molars to size 30 without significant errors. The differences in shaft designs seemed not to affect their shaping capabilities.
