El artículo parte de señalar la contradicción entre un desempeño macroeconómico, generalmente calificado como favorable, de las economías andinas en lo que va del presente siglo, sustentado en mayores tasas de crecimiento del PIB Y en la reducción del ritmo inflacionario, con el significativo agravamiento de la inestabilidad política en la región, que se ha constituido en la zona más conflictiva del continente. Posteriormente, se examina detenidamente el comportamiento de las economías andinas, estableciendo sus limitaciones y sobre todo los elevados niveles de desempleo en todos los países andinos, como factores estructurales que unidos a la crisis de sus instituciones políticas configuran una situación paradójica y muy frágil. En este contexto, la apuesta al TLC que realizan tres de sus miembros, con diversos grados de decisión, significa una seria amenaza para la integración andina y abre serias dudas sobre el balance de costos y beneficios.

Almost a quarter of the young people in the EU are unemployed. And once again it is the crisis-ridden states that have been hit hardest. But in other countries such as France, Sweden, and Luxembourg, younger members of the workforce, far more than their older counterparts, are also finding it difficult to get a job. Freedom of movement within the EU could help to provide them with new opportunities. All that is needed is the right kind of support.

Problem structuring methods or PSMs are widely applied across a range of variable but generally small-scale organizational contexts. However, it has been argued that they are seen and experienced less often in areas of wide ranging and highly complex human activity-specifically those relating to sustainability, environment, democracy and conflict (or SEDC). In an attempt to plan, track and influence human activity in SEDC contexts, the authors in this paper make the theoretical case for a PSM, derived from various existing approaches. They show how it could make a contribution in a specific practical context-within sustainable coastal development projects around the Mediterranean which have utilized systemic and prospective sustainability analysis or, as it is now known, Imagine. The latter is itself a PSM but one which is 'bounded' within the limits of the project to help deliver the required 'deliverables' set out in the project blueprint. The authors argue that sustainable development projects would benefit from a deconstruction of process by those engaged in the project and suggest one approach that could be taken-a breakout from a project-bounded PSM to an analysis that embraces the project itself. The paper begins with an introduction to the sustainable development context and literature and then goes on to illustrate the issues by grounding the debate within a set of projects facilitated by Blue Plan for Mediterranean coastal zones. The paper goes on to show how the analytical framework could be applied and what insights might be generated.

Public concern over impacts of chemicals in plant and animal production on health and the environment has led to increased demand for organic produce, which is usually promoted and often perceived as containing fewer contaminants, more nutrients, and being positive for the environment. These benefits are difficult to quantify, and potential environmental impacts on such benefits have not been widely studied.
