Studies on sphaeroma terebrans bate of the port of Cochi

Sphaeroma terebrans Bate, one of the most destructive wood-boring isopod crustacean occurring in the Cochin harbour region was taken up for investigations on its habitat, breeding, attack on timber, salinity tolerance and respiration. The respiration of the animal under different stresses was noted using an instrument fabricated in the laboratory. Of the various hydrographic conditions of the Cochin harbour region studied, salinity is found to be the most fluctuating factor and the variations are largely influenced by the seasonal rain fall from one side and the tidal currents on the other.In spite of the great fluctuations in salinity, Sphaeroma terebrans occurs throughout the year in the Cochin harbour region, though their number varies in different months. Exposure tests show that Sphaeroma terebrans can remain for about 20 to 24 hours outside water in a damp atmosphere.

Rashtriya Swasthya Bhima Yojana-Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme (Rsby-Chis) In Kerala: A Study On The Effectiveness And Utilization Of The Scheme With Special Reference To Ernakulam And Wayanad Districts

Health insurance has become a necessity for the common man, next to food, clothing and shelter. The financing of health expense is either catastrophic or sometimes even frequently contracted illnesses, is a major cause of mental agony for the common man. The cost of care may sometimes result in the complete erosion of the family savings or may even lead to indebtedness as many studies on causes of rural indebtedness bear testimony (Jayalakshmi, 2006). A suitable cover by way of health insurance is all that is required to cope with such situations. Health care insurance rightly provides the mechanism for both individuals and families to mitigate the financial burden of medical expenses in the present context. Hence a well designed affordable health insurance policy is the need of the hour.Therefore, it is very significant to study the extent to which the beneficiaries in Kerala make use of the benefits provided by a social health insurance scheme like RSBY-CHIS. Based on the above pertinent points, this study assumes national relevance even though the geographical area of the study is limited to two districts of Kerala. The findings of the study will bring forth valuable inputs on the services availed by the beneficiaries of RSBYCHIS and take appropriate measures to improve the effectiveness of the scheme whereby maximum quality benefit could be availed by the poorest of the poor and develop the scheme as a real dawn of the new era of health for them

Planning And Operation Problems Of Indian Major Ports With Special Emphasis On Cochin Port

Rapid changes in the technological environment of marine logistics and the increasing integration of waterborne, air and land transport systems have fostered a revolution in the design and operations of transport vehicles, cargo handling technology, and terminal facilities. This in turn has caused major changes in the functions of and uses of ports. From literature, it was found that these changes were very slow in case of Indian ports and the performances of port operations were poor when compared with similar ports in the same region. It was also found that a very few studies were conducted to identify the reasons for slow improvements in the performances of Indian major ports. In this thesis, an attempt is made to find out the operational problems of Indian major ports and to analyze the reasons for it. Some solutions have also been found out using management tools

Efficacy of Cluster- Based Approach for the revival of Handloom Co-operative Societies in Kerala- with special reference to Thiruvananthapuram and Kannur Districts

one of the key sectors, identified by the Department of Industries Government of Kerala, for the cluster development initiative is Handloom, which gives employment to over over 50,000 people directly. Despite its age old tradition and fame, the performance of the sector vis-à-vis power looms is not very rosy owing to (i) competition from cheap power loom cloth from other states (ii) scarcity of quality yarn (iii) price escalation of yarn, dyes, chemicals and other raw materials (iv) the shrinking market for handlooms in Kerala (v) non-demand based production and inadequacy of new designs and (vi) inefficiencies in the system, particularly in the co-operative sector. Cluster based approach is adopted in the handloom sector with the objective of providing necessary support mechanism to come out of the crisis that the sector faces now. While four cluster schemes are being implemented in Kerala, it is under IHDS-CDP that the State got a sizeable number of clusters benefiting a large number of societies and weavers- 24 handloom clusters, bringing 152 handloom co-operative societies and over 19,800 handloom workers under the Programme. This research attempts to revisit the underlying rationale and context of the new direction and would attempt to broadly analyze the growth trends under the influence of cluster model adopted by the State IHDS-CDP for the revival of handloom sector through a detailed study of the handloom co-operative societies in Kerala. If handloom sector in Kerala can be revived using cluster based approach, it can be easily concluded that cluster is capable of taking the MSME in Kerala to a ‘high growth path.’ The study is aimed at understanding how best clusters emerge as appropriate industrial organization suitable for the current global structure of manufacture

Anàlisi cronològic de la pesca artesanal al port de Palamós per a una proposta de reserva

Segons els coneixements i l’ experiència dels pescadors d’ arts menors de la Confraria de Palamós, s’ ha observat una dràstica davallada d’ algunes de les espècies d’ interès pesquer més representatives. La proposta d’ aquest sector es basa en declarar tota una zona d’ interès pesquer artesanal a l’ entorn de les Illes Formigues com a Reserva Marina d’ Interès Pesquer. Aquest projecte pretén esbrinar l’ evolució de la pesca artesanal al port de Palamós en el últims sis anys mitjançant l’ anàlisi cronològica a través del buidatge dels fulls de subhasta proporcionats per la Confraria de Palamós. En base els resultats obtinguts s’ ha fet una valoració de la situació actual que servirà com a punt de partida per al seguiment amb posterioritat. Finalment s’ han elaborat unes primeres propostes de gestió de cares a la possible futura creació de la reserva

Escore port modificado como predictor de mortalidad en pacientes con patología quirúrgica

Las decisiones terapéuticas en los hospitales están basadas en su nivel de complejidad más que en las condiciones particulares de cada paciente. No existen escalas de evaluación universales y reproducibles que permitan estratificar a los pacientes de acuerdo a su estado y riesgo de mortalidad y consecuentemente tomar decisiones. En el hospital Universitario Mayor hemos diseñado una escala basada en la escala PSI/PORT para clasificar a nuestros pacientes. Materiales y métodos: Se realizó un estudio de cohortes retrospectivas en el cual se aplicó la escala PORT modificada en pacientes quirúrgicos egresados vivos y fallecidos. Se evaluó cada una de las variables de la escala y su asociación con la muerte por medio de tablas de chi cuadrado y análisis de regresión logística. Se analizaron tablas de sensibilidad y especificidad de la escala y se determinó el índice de correlación de la misma. Resultados: La escala PORT modificada tiene una alta correlación con el riesgo de mortalidad en pacientes quirúrgicos según nuestro estudio. Sin embargo, dicha correlación es menor que la encontrada en un estudio previo realizado en pacientes con patología médica. Discusión: Se puede estratificar a los pacientes con patología quirúrgica por medio de la escala PORT modificada. Se recomienda aplicar la escala a un grupo mayor de pacientes con patología médica y quirúrgica e incluir en la escala una variable que implique el tiempo de evolución de la enfermedad.
