CO2-response function of radiation use efficiency in rice for climate change scenarios

The objective of this work was to evaluate a generalized response function to the atmospheric CO2 concentration [f(CO2)] by the radiation use efficiency (RUE) in rice. Experimental data on RUE at different CO2 concentrations were collected from rice trials performed in several locations around the world. RUE data were then normalized, so that all RUE at current CO2 concentration were equal to 1. The response function was obtained by fitting normalized RUE versus CO2 concentration to a Morgan-Mercer-Flodin (MMF) function, and by using Marquardt's method to estimate the model coefficients. Goodness of fit was measured by the standard deviation of the estimated coefficients, the coefficient of determination (R²), and the root mean square error (RMSE). The f(CO2) describes a nonlinear sigmoidal response of RUE in rice, in function of the atmospheric CO2 concentration, which has an ecophysiological background, and, therefore, renders a robust function that can be easily coupled to rice simulation models, besides covering the range of CO2 emissions for the next generation of climate scenarios for the 21st century.

Systems medicine and integrated care to combat chronic noncommunicable diseases

We propose an innovative, integrated, cost-effective health system to combat major non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including cardiovascular, chronic respiratory, metabolic, rheumatologic and neurologic disorders and cancers, which together are the predominant health problem of the 21st century. This proposed holistic strategy involves comprehensive patient-centered integrated care and multi-scale, multi-modal and multi-level systems approaches to tackle NCDs as a common group of diseases. Rather than studying each disease individually, it will take into account their intertwined gene-environment, socio-economic interactions and co-morbidities that lead to individual-specific complex phenotypes. It will implement a road map for predictive, preventive, personalized and participatory (P4) medicine based on a robust and extensive knowledge management infrastructure that contains individual patient information. It will be supported by strategic partnerships involving all stakeholders, including general practitioners associated with patient-centered care. This systems medicine strategy, which will take a holistic approach to disease, is designed to allow the results to be used globally, taking into account the needs and specificities of local economies and health systems.

Monipuolinen tietotyö tilitoimistossa - kiinnostava vaihtoehto valmistuvalle?

Tutkimuksen tarkoitus on tuottaa ajantasaista tietoutta siitä, millainen käsitys laskenta-alan tradenomi- ja maisteriopiskelijoilla on tämän päivän tilitoimistotyöstä ja koetaanko tilitoimisto kiinnostavana työpaikkana. Asiaa tarkasteltiin tietotyön monipuolisuuden ja motivaation näkökulmasta. Tutkimuksen empiirinen osuus toteutettiin nettikyselynä, joka kohdistettiin viimeisen vuoden taloushallinnon tai laskentatoimen pääainetta Suomessa opiskeleville tradenomi- ja maisteriopiskelijoille. Vastauksia saatiin 182, joista 162 oli tradenomi- ja 20 kauppatieteiden maisteriopiskelijoilta. Tutkimus toteutettiin kvantitatiivisena. Vastaajista 55 prosenttia pititilitoimistoa kiinnostavana ja 25 prosenttia melko kiinnostavana työpaikkana. Tulokset osoittavat, että tilitoimistotyö on kiinnostava vaihtoehto henkilöille, jotka kokevat työn itseään sisäisesti motivoivaksi. Sisäistä motivaatiota voidaan parantaa ulkoiseen motivaatioon vaikuttavia, kuten rahallisia ja sosiaalisia palkkioita, lisäämällä. Myös asiakaslähtöiset työtehtävät ja verkostomainen toimintatapa vaikuttavat sisäiseen motivaatioon. Työntekijän vaikutusmahdollisuudet omaan työhönsä lisäävät puolestaan ulkoista motivaatiota. Tieto- ja viestintätekniikan monipuolinen hyödyntäminen selittää ulkoisesta motivaatiosta pienen osan. Tietotyön ulottuvuuksista ainoastaan koulutus- ja kehittämismahdollisuudet eivätvaikuta motivaatioon eivätkä tilitoimiston kiinnostavuuteen työpaikkana. Tulokset osoittavat tilitoimistotyön olevan tulevien tietotyöntekijöiden näkemyksen mukaan monipuolista tietotyötä. Tilitoimistotyössä hyödynnetääntieto- ja viestintätekniikkaa monipuolisesti, ja se sisältää omaa suunnittelua vaativia työtehtäviä. Työ vaatii tekijältään korkeaa ja laaja-alaista osaamista sekä jatkuvaa itsensä kehittämistä. Tilitoimistot toimivat sekä sisäisissä että ulkoisissa verkostoissa, joten työntekijät tarvitsevat myös sosiaalisia taitoja.Tilitoimistot tarjoavat työntekijöille melko hyvät vaikutusmahdollisuudet omaantyöhönsä. Tilitoimistotyön arvioitiin tarjoavan muuta tietotyötä paremmat koulutus- ja itsensä kehittämismahdollisuudet. Huolimatta monipuolisuudesta tietotyönnäkökulmasta, tilitoimistotyötä pidettiin yleensä liian säännöllisenä rutiinityönä.

Las asociaciones de inmigrantes africanos. Organización, proyección y actuaciones

El asociacionismo de personas de origen extranjero ha crecido de forma notable desde los años 90 y, especialmente, desde los 2000, influenciado por los intereses de estas personas pero también por el contexto social, político e institucional que lo ha favorecido y condicionado. Este trabajo presenta los resultados de una encuesta realizada a 206 representantes de asociaciones de inmigrantes de origen africano de las comunidades autónomas de Cataluña, Valencia y Navarra. Nuestro objetivo ha consistido en clasificar las asociaciones, estudiar su organización y funcionamiento y conocer sus ámbitos de actuación. Entre otras cuestiones, hemos observado que este asociacionismo es joven y no responde a una única forma organizativa, sino que, en función de dinámicas internas y externas, intereses de los asociados y años de vida de cada asociación, adquiere diferentes estructuras y estrategias.

From room for books to room for users: an old infantry barrack as an answer to the lack of space

At the beginning of the 21st century, some Catalan university libraries detected a need stemming from the lack of space and the reconversion of physical libraries within the new European educational panorama. With the same cooperative spirit that characterized previous CBUC (Consortium of Academic Libraries of Catalonia) programs and services, the Consortium set in motion a project to address this need. An initial study was commissioned in 2002, and in 2003 a suitable building (old infantry barracks) was found in Lleida. The official opening took place in 2008. GEPA (Guaranteed Space for the Preservation of Access) facility is a cooperative repository, whose objectives are to store and preserve low use documents, ensuring their future access when needed, to convert room for books into room for library users, and doing it saving both space and money. The paper presents a brief historical introduction about the physical management of collections in libraries, and a short overview about high density library repositories all over the world, as an answer to the pressing problem of lack of spaces. The main goals of the communication are to comment the architectural project and its librarian issues, and to show how the GEPA facility allowed to change the spaces in university libraries in Catalonia. On the one hand, the paper deals with the selection of an old building to be renovated, the determination of the librarian needs, the compact shelving system chosen to store the documents in the building, the relation between physical space and information management, and the logistics involved in the load of low use documents from the libraries into the facility. On the other hand, we will show some examples of physical changes in Catalan libraries after large loads of documents to GEPA.

Reply to 'Sources of uncertainties in cod distribution models'

Ingvaldsen et al. comment on our study assessing global fish interchanges between the North Atlantic and Pacific oceans for more than 500 species during the entire 21st century. They propose that discrepancies between our model projections and observed data for cod in the Barents Sea are the result of the choice of Atmosphere-Ocean General Circulation Models (AOGCMs). We address this assertion here, re-running the cod model with additional observation data from the Barents Sea1, 3, and show that the lack of open-access, archived data for the Barents Sea was the primary cause of local prediction mismatch. This finding recalls the importance of systematic deposit of biodiversity data in global databases

The life-design paradigm is among those rooted in Guichard's (2009) life self-construction model that describes the identity processes underlying the development of multiple social selves. In this chapter, which is a tribute to the major contribution of Jean Guichard to the field of educational and vocational guidance and counseling, we will try to explicate the links between career adaptability and subjective identity forms. Both highlight two different and important processes that are interdependent and which should be simultaneously considered in the life design paradigm. These processes allow people to behave as active agents in their environment and are of high importance in the contemporary socioeconomic context, characterized by globalization, an increase in employment insecurity, the destructuralization of one's life course, and individualization. This chapter argues that both career adapt-abilities and identity processes rely on reflexivity and self-awareness abilities. For this reason the system of subjective identity forms, as defined by Guichard, can be considered as a meta-competency allowing adaptation, meaning making, but also the allocation of process resources.
