A novel sandwich-type compound, Na-12[Fe-4(H2O)(2)(As2W15O56)2].41H(2)O, has been synthesized. The compound was well-characterized by means of IR, UV-vis, W-183 NMR and elemental analyses. The compound crystallizes in the triclinic, P (1) over bar symmetry group. The structure of the compound is similar to that of Na-16[M-4(H2O)(2)(As2W15O56)(2)].nH(2)O (M = Cu, Zn, Co, Ni, Mn, Cd), and consists of an oxo-aqua tetranuclear iron core, [(Fe4O14)-O-III(H2O)(2)], sandwiched by two trivacant alpha-Wells-Dawson structural moieties, alpha-[As2W15O56]. Redoxelectrochemistry of the compound has been studied in buffer solutions at pH = 4.7 using polarography and cyclic voltammetry ( CV). The compound exhibited four one-electron couples associated with the Fe(III) center followed by three four-electron redox processes attributed to the tungsten-oxo framework. The compound-containing monolayer and multilayer films have been fabricated on a 4-aminobenzoic acid modified glassy carbon electrode surface by alternating deposition with a quaternized poly(4-vinylpyridine) partially complexed with [Os(bpy)(2)Cl](2+/-). CV, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), UV-vis spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy (AFM) have been used to characterize the multilayer films.

We construct a hybrid bilayer membrane (HBM) on a new substrate-carbon electrode. It is an extension of HBM based on other substrates. Primary alkylamine was chemically modified onto the surface of a carbon electrode by electrochemical scans; thus, a monolayer was formed on the electrode. Because the alkane chains section is toward the outside, a hydrophobic surface was constructed. Then a lipid monolayer was spread on the hydrophobic surface of the carbon electrode. The formed HBM was characterized by electrochemical and ATR-FT-IR methods. From ATR-FT-IR results, the lipid order parameter (S) of 0.73 was obtained. This kind of hybrid membrane has the advantages of a lipid/alkanethiol HBM. A potential application of this HBM as a biosensor (detecting K+) was given.

A poly(thionine) modified screen-printed carbon electrode has been prepared by an electrooxidative polymerization of thionine in neutral phosphate buffer. The modified electrodes are found to give stable and reproducible electrocatlytic responses to NADH and exhibit good stability. Several techniques, including cyclic voltammetry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), have been employed to characterize the poly(thionine) film. Further, the modified screen-printed carbon electrode was found to be promising as an amperometric detector for the flow injection analysis (FIA) of NADH, typically with a dynamic range of 5-100 muM.

We synthesized a kind of gold nanoparticle protected by a synthetic lipid (didodecyidimethylammonium bromide, DDAB). With the help of these gold nanoparticles, hemoglobin can exhibit a direct electron transfer (DET) reaction. The formal potential locates at -169 mV vs. Ag/AgCl. Spectral data indicated the hemoglobin on the electrode was not denatured. The lipid-protected gold nanoparticles were very stable (for at least 8 months). Their average diameter is 6.42 nm. It is the first time to use monolayer-protected nanoparticles to realize the direct electrochemistry of protein.

Through layer-by-layer assembly, a series of undecatungstozincates monosubstituted by first-row transition metals, ZnW11M(H2O)O-39(n-) (M=Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu. or Zn) were first successfully immobilized on a 4-aminobenzoic acid modified glassy carbon electrode surface. The electrochemical behaviors of these polyoxometalates were investigated. They exhibit some special properties in the films different from those in homogeneous aqueous solution. The Cu-centered reaction mechanism in the ZnW11Cu multilayer film was described. The electrocatalytic behaviors of these multilayer film electrodes to the reduction of H2O2 and BrO3- were comparatively studied.

Through layer-by-layer assembly, the bis-Keggin-type heteropolyanion K10H3 [Nd(SiMo7W4O39)(2)] XH2O was successfully immobilized on a glassy carbon electrode surface grafted covalently by 4-aminobenzoic acid. The electrochemical behavior of the heteropolyanion was investigated. Cyclic voltammetry proved the uniform growth of the film. However, the characteristic redox peaks of the heteropolyanion in the film were deformed with increasing of the number of the multilayer film. The effect of pH on the redox behaviors of [Nd(SiMo7W4)(2)](13-) in the film was discussed. The multilayer film electrodes have excellent electrocatalytic activities to the reduction of BrO3-, HNO2 and H2O2.

A novel amperometric biosensor utilizing two enzymes, glucose oxidase (GOD) and horseradish peroxidase (HRP), was developed for the cathodic detection of glucose. The glucose biosensor was constructed by electrochemical formation of a polypyrrole (PPy) membrane in the presence of GOD on the surface of a HRP-modified sol-gel derived-mediated ceramic carbon electrode. Ferrocenecarboxylic acid (FCA) was used as mediator to transfer electron between enzyme and electrode. In the hetero-bilayer configuration of electrode, all enzymes were well immobilized in electrode matrices and showed favorable enzymatic activities. The amperometric detection of glucose was carried out at +0.16 V (versus saturated calomel reference electrode (SCE)) in 0.1 M phosphate buffer solution (pH 6.9) with a linear response range between 8.0 x 10(-5) and 1.3 x 10(-3) M glucose. The biosensor showed a good suppression of interference in the amperometric detection.

A new class of polyoxomelalate (POM)-modified electrodes is fabricated by the sol-gel technique and demonstrated for nitrite sensing. The electrode material comprises an interconnected dispersion of graphite powder and a uniform dispersion of isopolymolybdic anions (Mo8O26) in a porous methylsilicate matrix. The chemically modified electrodes showed well-defined cyclic voltammograms with three reversible redox couples in acidic aqueous solutions because of the good physicochemical compatibility of Mo8O26 and the carbon ceramic matrix. The Mo8O26-modified electrodes show good stability and reproducibility, especially the renewal repeatability by simple polishing in the event of surface fouling. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. Prussian blue (PB) supported on graphite powder was prepared by the chemical deposition technique and subsequently dispersed into methyltrimethoxysilane-derived gels to yield a conductive graphite organosilicate composite. The composite was used as the electrode material to fabricate a three-dimensional PB-modified electrode. PB acts as a catalyst, graphite powder ensures conductivity by percolation, the silicate provides a rigid porous backbone, and the methyl groups endow hydrophobicity and thus limit the wetting section of the modified electrode. The chemically modified electrode can electrocatalyze the oxidation of hydrazine, and exhibits a distinct advantage of polishing in the event of surface fouling, as well as simple preparation, good chemical and mechanical stability and good repeatability of surface-renewal. Hydrodynamic voltammetric experiments were performed to characterize the electrode as an amperometric sensor for the determination of hydrazine. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

In this paper, a new method of fabricating multilayers on a carbon substrate is presented. First, a uniformly charged carbon surface was prepared through molecular design. Then an ultrathin film consisting of layer-pairs of oppositely charged polymeric cationic poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) and silicotungstate, SiW12O404- (SiW12), was grown layer-by-layer onto the grafted carbon substrate using a molecular self-assembly technique and an electrochemical method. The technique allows one to prepare highly adherent, dense and smooth films of polyoxometalates with special properties. By combining cyclic voltammetry (CV) and X-ray (XR) reflectometry, it was determined that the average surface density of SiW12 was 2.10 x 10(-10) mol cm(-2), and the thickness increase per adsorption of PDDA-SiW12 was 1.7 +/- 0.2 nm, indicating that the amount of SiW12 anion per one layer adsorption corresponded to a monolayer coverage. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was also used to examine the surface morphology and determine the grain size distribution and roughness for multilayer films. An increase in root-mean-square (RMS) surface roughness from 7 to 9 Angstrom was observed as the number of layer-pairs in the film increased from 2 to 6. FTIR results showed that the good stability of the multilayer films was due to Coulomb interactions between the SiW12 anion and the polymeric cations PDDA. Moreover, the multilayer films, in acidic aqueous solution, showed good electrocatalytic activity toward the reduction of NO2-, and the catalytic currents increased with increasing the layer numbers of SiW12 adsorption. These characteristics of the multilayer films might find potential applications in the field of sensors and microelectronics devices.

A new type of inorganic-organic hybrid material incorporating carbon powder and alpha -type 2:18-molybdodiphosphate (P2Mo18) in a methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMOS) based gel has been produced by a sol-gel process and used to fabricate a chemically modified electrode. The P2Mo18-doped carbon ceramic composite electrode was characterized using SEM and cyclic voltammetry. Square-wave voltammetry with an excellent sensitivity was exploited to conveniently investigate the dependence of current and half-wave potential (E-1/2) on pH. The chemically modified electrode has some advantages over the modified film electrodes constructed by the conventional methods, such as long-term stability, reproducibility, and especially repeatability of surface-renewal by simple polishing in the event of surface fouling or dopant leaching. In addition, the modified electrode shows a good catalytic activity for the electrochemical reduction of bromate in an acidic aqueous solution. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Stable lipid film was made by casting dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) and rutin onto the surface of a glassy carbon (GC) electrode. The electrochemical behavior of rutin in the DPPC film was studied. The modified electrode coated with rutin gave quasi-reversible reduction-oxidation peak on cyclic voltammogram in the phosphate buffer (pH 7.4). The peak current did not decrease apparently after stored at 4 degreesC for 8 hours in refrigerator. This model of biological membrane was used to investigate the oxidation of dihydronicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) by rutin. Rutin in the film acts as a mediator. The modified electrode shows a great enhancement and the anodic peak potential was reduced by about 220 mV in the oxidation of 5 X 10(-3) mol L-1 NADN compared with that obtained at a bare glassy carbon electrode. Novel ceramic-carbon electrodes (CCEs) containing 1:12-phosphomolybdic acid (PMo12) were constructed by homogeneously dispersing PMo12 and graphite powder into methyltrimethoxysilane-derived gel. Peak currents for the PMo12-doped CCE were surface-controlled at lower scan rates but diffusion-controlled at higher scan rates and peak potentials shifted to the negative potential direction with increasing pH. In addition, the electrode exhibited electrocatalytic activity toward the oxidation of ascorbic acid. The PMo12-modified CCE presented good chemical and mechanical stability and good surface renewability (ten successive polishing resulted in less than 5% relative standard deviation). Diaminoalkanes (NH2(CH2)(n)NH2, n = 7,10,12) were grafted onto a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) surface by amino cation radical formed during electrooxidation of amino group. The presence of diamine grafted layer at the GCE is demonstrated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The effect of the grafted layer at the GCE surface on the redox responses of Ru(NH3)(6)(3+) and Fe(CN)(6)(3-) redox probes has been investigated. Electrochemical impedance experiments indicate that the kinetics of electron transfer are slowed down when the scan rate taken to modify the GCE is low, and that diaminoalkane with longer alkyl-chain used has higher blocking characteristics. The amine-functionalized GCE is versatile not only to further covalently immobilize ferrocene acetic acid via carbodiimide coupling, but also as a charge-rich substrate to successfully adsorb heteropolyanion P2W18 in acidic solution by electrostatic interaction. 4-Aminobenzoic acid (4-ABA) was covalently grafted on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) by amine cation radical formation in the electrooxidation process of the amino-containing compound. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurement proves the presence of 4-carboxylphenylamine monolayer on the GCE. The redox responses of various electroactive probes were investigated on the 4-ABA-modified GCE. Electron transfer to Fe(CN)(6)(3-) in solutions of various pHs was studied by both cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance analysis on the modified electrode. Changes in the solution pH value result in the variation of the terminal group charge state, based on which surface pK(a) values are estimated. The 4-ABA-modified GCE was used as a suitable charged substrate to fabricate polyoxometalates-consisting (POM-consisting) monolayer and multilayer films through layer-by-layer assembly based on electrostatic attraction. Cyclic voltammetry shows the uniform growth of these three-dimensional multilayer films. Taking K10H3[Pr-(SiMo7W4O39)(2)]. H2O (abbreviated as Pr(SiMo7W4)(2)), for example, the preparation and electrochemical behavior of its monolayer and multilayer film had been investigated in detail. This modification strategy is proven to be a general one suitable for anchoring many kinds of POMs on the 4-ABA-modified GCE.
