Density functional theory (DFT) calculations at the B3LYP/6-31G** theoretical level were performed for a series of guanidine-fused bicyclic skeleton derivatives C4N6H8-n(NO2)n (n = 1 - 6). The heats of formation (HOFs) were calculated by isodesmic reactions, and the detonation properties were evaluated using the Kamlet - Jacobs equations. The bond dissociation energies were also analyzed to investigate the thermal stability and sensitivity of the compounds. The results show that all of the derivatives have high positive HOFs, compound G has the highest theoretical density, and compound F1 has the highest detonation velocity and detonation pressure. Considering both the detonation properties and thermal stabilities, compounds D1 and D4 (3 nitro substituents), E1 - E6 (4 nitro substituents), and G (6 nitro substituents) can be regarded as potential candidates for high-energy density materials.

Wheat (Triticum aestivum) powdery mildew, caused by the biotrophic fungus Blumeria graminis f. sp. tritici, is one of the most severe foliar diseases attacking this crop, reducing grain yields by 10% to 62% in Brazil. The disease can be controlled by genetic resistance of the host, but the pathogen has physiological specialization, which enables it to infect wheat cultivars that have remained resistant for years. The objective of this work was to evaluate the variability of pathogenic strains of B. graminis f. sp. tritici collected in Brazil and the effectiveness of wheat resistance genes to powdery mildew in the 2003 crop season. Plants of a differential series were inoculated with each monopustular isolate. Thirty-one combinations of effective and ineffective resistance genes were identified. Only the gene Pm4a+... remained totally effective to all isolates, and gene Pm6 was highly effective (below 10% of susceptibility), whereas genes Pm3a and Pm8 were totally ineffective (susceptible to all isolates). Genes Pm3c, D1, and D2 showed low effectiveness (above 50% of susceptibility), and genes Pm1, 2, 4a, 1+?, and 2+Mld had mean effective results to most strains (susceptibility between 10% and 49%). The virulence formula Pm1, 3c, 4a, 6, 1+?, 2+Mld, 4a+..., D2 (effective genes) / 2, 3a, 8, D1 (ineffective genes) was most frequently found, accounting for 15% of the occurrences. The most frequent number of ineffective genes was seven, ranging from three to ten.

Photosystem II (PSII) is susceptible to light-induced damage defined as photoinhibition. In natural conditions, plants are capable of repairing the photoinhibited PSII by on-going degradation and re-synthesis of the D1 reaction centre protein of PSII. Photoinhibition is induced by both visible and ultraviolet light and photoinhibition occurs under all light intensities with the same efficiency per photon. In my thesis work, I studied the reaction kinetics and mechanism of photoinhibition of PSII, as well as photoprotection in leaves of higher plants. Action spectroscopy was used to identify photoreceptors of photoinhibition. I found that the action spectrum of photoinhibition in vivo shows resemblance to the absorption spectra of manganese model compounds of the oxygen evolving complex (OEC) suggesting a role for manganese as a photoreceptor of photoinhibition under UV and visible light. In order to study the protective effect of non-photochemical quenching, the action spectrum was measured from leaves of wild type Arabidopsis thaliana and two mutants impaired in nonphotochemical quenching of chlorophyll a excitations. The findings of action spectroscopy and simulations of chlorophyll-based photoinhibition mechanisms suggested that quenching of antenna excitations protects less efficiently than would be expected if antenna chlorophylls were the only photoreceptors of photoinhibition. The reaction kinetics of prolonged photoinhibition was studied in leaves of Cucurbita maxima and Capsicum annuum. The results indicated that photoinhibitory decrease in both the oxygen evolution activity and ratio of variable to maximum fluorescence follows firstorder kinetics in vivo. The persistence of first-order kinetics suggests that already photoinhibited reaction centres do not protect against photoinhibition and that the mechanism of photoinhibition does not have a reversible intermediate. When Cucurbita maxima leaves were photoinhibited with saturating single-turnover flashes and continuous light, the light response curve of photoinhibition was found to be essentially a straight line with both types of illumination, suggesting that similar photoinhibition mechanisms might function during illumination with continuous light and during illumination with short flashes.

Työssä tutkittiin kahden eri pinta-aktiiviaineen A ja B käytön vaikutusta kahdella eri kuitulinjalla. Molempien pinta-aktiiviaineiden pääfunktiona oli vaikuttaa nes-teen pintajännitykseen, jolloin nesteen tunkeutumisnopeus kuitumatriisiin ja kui-tujen huokosiin paranee. Lisäksi pinta-aktiiviaineilla A ja B oli kyky stabiloida nesteeseen liuenneita uuteainekomponentteja, jolloin uudelleensaostumisen riski pienenee. Koeajoilla pyrittiin vaikuttamaan happidelignifiointivaiheen uuteainetasoihin, alkali- ja happiannoksiin sekä kappareduktioon. Lisäksi tarkasteltiin annostelun vaikutusta kuitulinjan pesurien toimintaan, uuteainetasojen kehittymiseen koko kuitulinjalla sekä valkaisun kemikaalikulutukseen. Työssä kokeiltiin myös pinta-aktiiviaineen B vaikutusta EOP-vaiheen uuteainetasoon. Työn kirjallisuusosassa perehdyttiin puun uuteaineisiin ja niiden käyttäytymiseen kuitulinjalla, pinta-aktiiviaineisiin, pesun teoriaan sekä kuitulinjan kemikaaliannosteluihin vaikuttaviin tekijöihin. Molemmissa koeajoissa pinta-aktiiviaineet A ja B annosteltiin massan joukkoon juuri ennen happivaihetta. EOP-vaiheeseen pinta-aktiiviaine B annostelu tehtiin D0-vaiheen pesurin jälkeiseen massaan. Asetoniuutemääritykset tehtiin massasta ennen happivaihetta, happivaiheen jälkeen ja valkaistulle massalle sekä pinta-aktiiviaine B koeajon yhteydessä EOP-vaiheen jälkeen. Pinta-aktiiviaineiden käytöllä havaittiin olevan positiivinen vaikutus kuitulinjan asetoniuutetasojen kehittymisessä. Verrattuna referenssijaksoon, oli happivaiheen alkali- ja happiannokset pienemmät pinta-aktiiviaineiden käytön aikana ilman, että saavutettu kappareduktio heikkeni. Pesurien toiminnan kannalta pinta-aktiiviaineiden käytöllä oli myönteisiä vaikutuksia pesutehokkuuden ja pesun ta-saisuuden kannalta. Lisäksi havaittiin valkaisussa merkittävä muutos D0- ja D1-vaiheiden klooridioksiveden käytössä ja EOP-vaiheen alkaliannoksessa.

This work evaluated eight hypsometric models to represent tree height-diameter relationship, using data obtained from the scaling of 118 trees and 25 inventory plots. Residue graphic analysis and percent deviation mean criteria, qui-square test precision, residual standard error between real and estimated heights and the graybill f test were adopted. The identity of the hypsometric models was also verified by applying the F(Ho) test on the plot data grouped to the scaling data. It was concluded that better accuracy can be obtained by using the model prodan, with h and d1,3 data measured in 10 trees by plots grouped into these scaling data measurements of even-aged forest stands.

Tension (TW) and opposite wood (OW) of Eucalyptus globulus trees were analyzed for its chemical characteristics and Kraft pulp production. Lignin content was 16% lower and contained 32% more syringyl units in TW than in OW. The increase in syringyl units favoured the formation of β-O-4 bonds that was also higher in TW than in OW (84% vs. 64%, respectively). The effect of these wood features was evaluated in the production of Kraft pulps from both types of wood. At kappa number 16, Kraft pulps obtained from TW demanded less active alkali in delignification and presented slightly higher or similar pulp yield than pulps made with OW. Fiber length, coarseness and intrinsic viscosity were also higher in tension than in opposite pulps. When pulps where refined to 30°SR, TW pulps needed 18% more revolutions in the PFI mill to achieve the same beating degree than OW pulps. Strength properties (tensile, tear and burst indexes) were slightly higher or similar in tension as compared with opposite wood pulps. After an OD0(EO)D1 bleaching sequence, both pulps achieved up to 89% ISO brightness. Bleached pulps from TW presented higher viscosity and low amount of hexenuronic acids than pulps from OW. Results showed that TW presented high xylans and low lignin content that caused a decrease in alkali consumption, increase pulp strength properties and similar bleaching performance as compared with pulps from OW.

A produção da alface tipo americana em ambiente protegido, aliada ao emprego de práticas de manejo de irrigação e adubação, pode contribuir para o aumento da produtividade e expansão da cultura na região de Lavras - MG. Em uma estufa modelo capela, foi realizado um experimento com o objetivo de avaliar o efeito de freqüências de irrigação e de doses de potássio sobre a produtividade da alface-americana e a eficiência do uso da água. O experimento foi composto pelos seguintes tratamentos de turnos de rega: (P1) - irrigação diária; (P2) - irrigação de dois em dois dias; (P3) - irrigação de três em três dias, e (P4) - irrigação de quatro em quatro dias. Nas parcelas subdivididas, foram aplicadas quatro doses de cloreto de potássio, via fertirrigação: (D1) - 100 kg de KCl ha-1; (D2) - 150 kg de KCl ha-1; (D3) - 200 kg de KCl ha-1, e (D4) - 250 kg de KCl ha-1. As variáveis avaliadas foram a produtividade de alface e a eficiência do uso da água, ou seja, a produtividade por milímetro de água aplicado. Concluiu-se que a maior produtividade (44,06 t ha-1) foi obtida com 119,36 kg ha-1 de K2O; o manejo de irrigação para a cultura da alface-americana em ambiente protegido poderá ser realizado com intervalo entre irrigações de quatro dias, e com o aumento dos intervalos houve aumento da eficiência de uso da água de irrigação.
