Alumni are considered as precious resource of the institutions, thus improving alumni adminis-tration is critical. In information era, alumni administration is assisted by widespread information technology, such as social network sites. This paper aims to discover if a self-built information sys-tem would enhance alumni connection in the IMMIT context, and what kind of attributes would be helpful applying to the special context. The current online alumni services at other universities and at the IMMIT host university are analyzed, and then social media is introduced. After illustrating the social capital existing in IM-MIT, the type of the self-built information system is suggested, following an interpretation of the prototype. Two research models are utilized in this article: TAM and intentional social action model. The second model is adjusted with proposed parameters. Afterwards, a survey and an interview protocol are designed under the guidance of the models. The results are analyzed in several groups, and the proposed parameters are tested. A conclusion is drawn to indicate how to improve alumniâŸs intention to use and how to achieve a better-accepted design.

Technological developments in microprocessors and ICT landscape have made a shift to a new era where computing power is embedded in numerous small distributed objects and devices in our everyday lives. These small computing devices are ne-tuned to perform a particular task and are increasingly reaching our society at every level. For example, home appliances such as programmable washing machines, microwave ovens etc., employ several sensors to improve performance and convenience. Similarly, cars have on-board computers that use information from many di erent sensors to control things such as fuel injectors, spark plug etc., to perform their tasks e ciently. These individual devices make life easy by helping in taking decisions and removing the burden from their users. All these objects and devices obtain some piece of information about the physical environment. Each of these devices is an island with no proper connectivity and information sharing between each other. Sharing of information between these heterogeneous devices could enable a whole new universe of innovative and intelligent applications. The information sharing between the devices is a diffcult task due to the heterogeneity and interoperability of devices. Smart Space vision is to overcome these issues of heterogeneity and interoperability so that the devices can understand each other and utilize services of each other by information sharing. This enables innovative local mashup applications based on shared data between heterogeneous devices. Smart homes are one such example of Smart Spaces which facilitate to bring the health care system to the patient, by intelligent interconnection of resources and their collective behavior, as opposed to bringing the patient into the health system. In addition, the use of mobile handheld devices has risen at a tremendous rate during the last few years and they have become an essential part of everyday life. Mobile phones o er a wide range of different services to their users including text and multimedia messages, Internet, audio, video, email applications and most recently TV services. The interactive TV provides a variety of applications for the viewers. The combination of interactive TV and the Smart Spaces could give innovative applications that are personalized, context-aware, ubiquitous and intelligent by enabling heterogeneous systems to collaborate each other by sharing information between them. There are many challenges in designing the frameworks and application development tools for rapid and easy development of these applications. The research work presented in this thesis addresses these issues. The original publications presented in the second part of this thesis propose architectures and methodologies for interactive and context-aware applications, and tools for the development of these applications. We demonstrated the suitability of our ontology-driven application development tools and rule basedapproach for the development of dynamic, context-aware ubiquitous iTV applications.

A morphological and cell culture study from nasal mucosa of dogs was performed in order to establish a protocol to obtain a cell population committed to neuronal lineage, as a proposal for the treatment of traumatic and degenerative lesions in these animals, so that in the future these results could be applied to the human species. Twelve mongrel dogs of 60-day aged pregnancy were collected from urban pound dogs in São Paulo. Tissue from cribriform ethmoidal lamina of the fetuses was collected at necropsy under sterile conditions around 1h to 2h postmortem by uterine sections and sections from the fetal regions described above. Isolated cells of this tissue were added in DMEM/F-12 medium under standard conditions of incubation (5% CO², >37ºC). Cell culture based on isolated cells from biopsies of the olfactory epithelium showed rapid growth when cultured for 24 hours, showing phase-bright sphere cells found floating around the fragments, attached on culture flasks. After 20 days, a specific type of cells, predominantly ellipsoids or fusiform cells was characterized in vitro. The indirect immunofluorescence examination showed cells expressing markers of neuronal precursors (GFAP, neurofilament, oligodendrocyte, and III â-tubulin). The cell proliferation index showed Ki67 immunostaining with a trend to label cell groups throughout the apical region, while PCNA immunostaining label predominantly cell groups lying above the basal lamina. The transmission electron microscopy from the olfactory epithelium of dogs revealed cells with electron-dense cytoplasm and preserving the same distribution as those of positive cell staining for PCNA. Metabolic activity was confirmed by presence of euchromatin in the greatest part of cells. All these aspects give subsidies to support the hypothesis about resident progenitor cells among the basal cells of the olfactory epithelium, committed to renewal of these cell populations, especially neurons.

TyÃn lähtÃkohtana on ICT-alan yrityksen AinaCom Oy:n toimintaympäristÃn muutos, ja siihen toteutettava vaatimusmäärittely. Vaatimusmäärittelyn toteutukseen otetaan tueksi tietojohtaminen, jonka avulla saadaan syvyyttä perinteiseen vaatimusmäärittelyyn. Sekä vaatimusmäärittelyä että toimintaympäristÃn muutosta, tarkemmin ERP (Enteprise Resource Planning) toiminnanohjausjärjestelmä-projektia, tehostetaan tietojohtamisen keinoin. TyÃn tavoitteena on selvittää miten tietojohtaminen voidaan ottaa vaatimusmäärittelyn tueksi toimintaympäristÃn muutoksessa. Sekä kirjallisuuskatsauksen että AinaCom Oy:n vaatimusmäärittelyprojektin perusteella voidaan todeta, että tietojohtamisen ja tiedon spiraalin (SECI-malli) avulla voidaan edesauttaa tiedon hallitsemista mittavissa ohjelmistoprojekteissa, kuten ERP-projektissa, sekä vaatimusmäärittelyssä. Näin tietojohtamisen avulla voidaan saavuttaa hallittavampia aikatauluja, kohtuullisempia kustannuksia, sekä menestyksekkäämpiä projekteja.

The Internet and other new information and communication technologies (ICTs) have become an integral part of most Western societies, from the perspective of both individuals and organizations. In this dissertation the evolving role of the Internet and other new ICTs in Finland over the past decade is studied from the perspective of disparity. The ICT disparities are seen to be constructed from two interconnecting elements, access and implications. The main goal of this dissertation is to examine how access, different user purposes, as well as implications, reflect disparities among different socio-demographic and socioeconomic population groups. For the purposes of this work, four research studies, each with its own, specific topic, were constructed. According to the results, age is clearly the most significant element associated with both access and implications for the new ICTs in Finland. Although other examined factors were also significant, they were often associated with individual research topics. In addition, the dissertation will also provide new research elements for future reference.

The necessity of EC (Electronic Commerce) and enterprise systems integration is perceived from the integrated nature of enterprise systems. The proven benefits of EC to provide competitive advantages to the organizations force enterprises to adopt and integrate EC with their enterprise systems. Integration is a complex task to facilitate seamless flow of information and data between different systems within and across enterprises. Different systems have different platforms, thus to integrate systems with different platforms and infrastructures, integration technologies, such as middleware, SOA (Service-Oriented Architecture), ESB (Enterprise Service Bus), JCA (J2EE Connector Architecture), and B2B (Business-to-Business) integration standards are required. Huge software vendors, such as Oracle, IBM, Microsoft, and SAP suggest various solutions to address EC and enterprise systems integration problems. There are limited numbers of literature about the integration of EC and enterprise systems in detail. Most of the studies in this area have focused on the factors which influence the adoption of EC by enterprise or other studies provide limited information about a specific platform or integration methodology in general. Therefore, this thesis is conducted to cover the technical details of EC and enterprise systems integration and covers both the adoption factors and integration solutions. In this study, many literature was reviewed and different solutions were investigated. Different enterprise integration approaches as well as most popular integration technologies were investigated. Moreover, various methodologies of integrating EC and enterprise systems were studied in detail and different solutions were examined. In this study, the influential factors to adopt EC in enterprises were studied based on previous literature and categorized to technical, social, managerial, financial, and human resource factors. Moreover, integration technologies were categorized based on three levels of integration, which are data, application, and process. In addition, different integration approaches were identified and categorized based on their communication and platform. Also, different EC integration solutions were investigated and categorized based on the identified integration approaches. By considering different aspects of integration, this study is a great asset to the architectures, developers, and system integrators in order to integrate and adopt EC with enterprise systems.

Production and generation of electrical power is evolving to more environmental friendly technologies and schemes. Pushed by the increasing cost of fossil fuels, the operational costs of producing electrical power with fossil fuels and the effect in the environment, like pollution and global warming, renewable energy sources gain con-stant impulse into the global energy economy. In consequence, the introduction of distributed energy sources has brought a new complexity to the electrical networks. In the new concept of smart grids and decen-tralized power generation; control, protection and measurement are also distributed and requiring, among other things, a new scheme of communication to operate with each other in balance and improve performance. In this research, an analysis of different communication technologies (power line communication, Ethernet over unshielded twisted pair (UTP), optic fiber, Wi-Fi, Wi-MAX, and Long Term Evolution) and their respective characteristics will be carried out. With the objective of pointing out strengths and weaknesses from different points of view (technical, economical, deployment, etc.) to establish a richer context on which a decision for communication approach can be done depending on the specific application scenario of a new smart grid deployment. As a result, a description of possible optimal deployment solutions for communication will be shown considering different options for technologies, and a mention of different important considerations to be taken into account will be made for some of the possible network implementation scenarios.

Yrityksen tietohallintoon kohdistuu tänä päivänä paljon vaatimuksia. Vaatimukset kohdistuvat tietohallinnon merkitykseen liiketoiminnan tukijana ja suorituskyvyn edistäjänä. ICT-toimialan rooli palveluiden tuottajana ja Suomen taloudellisen kas-vun tukijana ovat merkittävät. Tämän diplomityÃn tavoite on selvittää mikä on tietohallinnon rooli ja merkitys osana yrityksen suorituskykyä ja miten sitä tulisi kehittää. Tutkimuksen teoreettinen viitekehys koostuu yleisistä suorituskyvyn johtamisen malleista, suorituskyvyn joh-tamisen malleista tietohallinnossa sekä IT-strategian suuntaamisen malleista ja suuntaamisen vaikutuksesta yrityksen suorituskykyyn. Tutkimuskysymys on: miten strategian suuntaamista tulisi kehittää jotta tietohallinto pystyisi edistämään yrityk-sen suorituskykyä? Tutkimusstrategia on case-tutkimus ja empiirinen aineisto on hankittu teemahaastatteluilla. Case-tutkimuksen tulosten mukaan strategian suuntaamisen arvioinnin mallin valit-seminen on tärkeää. Strategian suuntaamisen kaikki näkÃkulmat tulee ottaa huomi-oon. Esimerkiksi osaaminen, kommunikaatio, kumppanuudet ja ihmisten käyttäy-tyminen saattavat jäädä ns. kovien näkÃkulmien varjoon. Strategian suuntaamisessa tulee kiinnittää huomiota suuntaamiseen kaikilla organisaatiotasoilla. Toiminnalli-sen tason merkitys tulee myÃs huomioida. Strategian suuntaamista kehitettäessä tulee arvioinnissa ottaa huomioon eri liiketoimintayksikÃiden arvioinnit, koska ne saattavat poiketa vahvasti toisistaan ja siten vääristää kehittämiskohteiden valitse-mista.

PK-yritysten omistajanvaihdokset koskettavat vuoteen 2020 mennessä Suomessa noin 250000 ihmistä. Yhteiskunnan kannalta on tärkeää, että vaihdokset onnistuvat ja yritykset säilyttävät kilpailukykynsä, pystyvät kehittymään, kasvamaan kannattavasti ja tyÃllistämään lisää henkilÃkuntaa. TyÃn tavoitteena on ymmärtää ja selittää PK-yrityksen omistajanvaihdosta tietojohtamisen näkÃkulmasta. Tutkimus toteutettiin vertailevana tapaustutkimuksena. Aineisto kerättiin puolistrukturoiduilla teemahaastatteluilla. Luopujan hiljaisen tiedon ja jatkajan yritykseen tuoman uuden tiedon onnistunut hyÃdyntäminen on oleellista PK-yritysten omistajanvaihdosten onnistumisessa. Luopujan hiljaisen tiedon siirtäminen jatkajalle ylläpitää yrityksen kilpailukykyä. Jatkajan yritykseen tuoma uusi tieto puolestaan voi laukaista tiedon hankinnan, sulattamisen, muokkaamisen ja hyÃdyntämisen prosessin, jonka kautta yrityksen kilpailukykyä voidaan parantaa tehostamalla prosesseja tai parantamalla tuotteita ja palveluita. YksilÃiden välinen tiedon jakaminen, siirtäminen ja rakentaminen ovat prosesseja, jotka kasvattavat yrityksen absorptiivistä kapasiteettiä tehostamalla tiedon sulattamista ja muuntamista. Tätä kautta voidaan osaltaan selittää omistajanvaihdokseen liittyviä riskejä ja mahdollisuuksia.

Organisaatioon sitoutuminen on organisaation kannalta kriittinen ilmiÃ. Sen nähdään vähentävän henkilÃstÃn vaihtuvuutta ja aineettoman pääoman katoa organisaatiosta. Tässä tyÃssä tutkittiin erään valtionhallinnon laitoksen henkilÃstÃn organisaatioon sitoutumisen tasoa ja siihen vaikuttavia tekijÃitä. Tutkimuksessa organisaatioon sitoutumista tarkasteltiin johtamisen, kommunikaation ja organisaation oikeudenmukaisuuden näkÃkulmasta. Kaikkia tutkittavia tekijÃitä tarkasteltiin sekä globaalista, että lokaalista näkÃkulmasta. Tutkimuksessa havaittiin ainoastaan globaalin tason vaikuttajilla olevan merkittävä vaikutus organisaatioon sitoutumisessa, ainoana poikkeuksena lokaali oikeudenmukaisuus. Organisaatioon sitoutumisen havaittiin perustuvan sitoutumisen tunneperäiseen elementtiin, velvollisuudentunnon ja jatkuvuusperäisen komponentin jäädessä heikommiksi. Merkittävä havainto oli tutkimuksissa havaittujen demografisten vaikuttajien korreloivan joko ainoastaan heikosti tai ei lainkaan organisaatioon sitoutumiseen. Tutkimuksessa tarkasteltiin myÃs kriittisten asiantuntijoiden ja perusasiantuntijoiden sitoutumisen eroja. Kriittisten asiantuntijoiden havaittiin olevan heikommin sitoutuneita ja sitoutumisen tekijÃiden globaalin tason vaikutuksen olevan merkittävästi vahvempi heihin, kuin perusasiantuntijoihin. Perusasiantuntijoiden havaittiin kiinnittyvän lokaaleihin tekijÃihin, joilla on heikompi, tai ei juurikaan vaikutusta organisaatioon sitoutumiseen. Vaikuttavimmiksi organisaatioon sitoutumista vahvistaviksi tekijÃiksi tunnistettiin johtamisen ja kommunikaation laadukkuus, ja organisaation osoittama oikeudenmukaisuus.

Digital business ecosystems (DBE) are becoming an increasingly popular concept for modelling and building distributed systems in heterogeneous, decentralized and open environments. Information- and communication technology (ICT) enabled business solutions have created an opportunity for automated business relations and transactions. The deployment of ICT in business-to-business (B2B) integration seeks to improve competitiveness by establishing real-time information and offering better information visibility to business ecosystem actors. The products, components and raw material flows in supply chains are traditionally studied in logistics research. In this study, we expand the research to cover the processes parallel to the service and information flows as information logistics integration. In this thesis, we show how better integration and automation of information flows enhance the speed of processes and, thus, provide cost savings and other benefits for organizations. Investments in DBE are intended to add value through business automation and are key decisions in building up information logistics integration. Business solutions that build on automation are important sources of value in networks that promote and support business relations and transactions. Value is created through improved productivity and effectiveness when new, more efficient collaboration methods are discovered and integrated into DBE. Organizations, business networks and collaborations, even with competitors, form DBE in which information logistics integration has a significant role as a value driver. However, traditional economic and computing theories do not focus on digital business ecosystems as a separate form of organization, and they do not provide conceptual frameworks that can be used to explore digital business ecosystems as value driversâcombined internal management and external coordination mechanisms for information logistics integration are not the current practice of a companyâs strategic process. In this thesis, we have developed and tested a framework to explore the digital business ecosystems developed and a coordination model for digital business ecosystem integration; moreover, we have analysed the value of information logistics integration. The research is based on a case study and on mixed methods, in which we use the Delphi method and Internetbased tools for idea generation and development. We conducted many interviews with key experts, which we recoded, transcribed and coded to find success factors. Qualitative analyses were based on a Monte Carlo simulation, which sought cost savings, and Real Option Valuation, which sought an optimal investment program for the ecosystem level. This study provides valuable knowledge regarding information logistics integration by utilizing a suitable business process information model for collaboration. An information model is based on the business process scenarios and on detailed transactions for the mapping and automation of product, service and information flows. The research results illustrate the current cap of understanding information logistics integration in a digital business ecosystem. Based on success factors, we were able to illustrate how specific coordination mechanisms related to network management and orchestration could be designed. We also pointed out the potential of information logistics integration in value creation. With the help of global standardization experts, we utilized the design of the core information model for B2B integration. We built this quantitative analysis by using the Monte Carlo-based simulation model and the Real Option Value model. This research covers relevant new research disciplines, such as information logistics integration and digital business ecosystems, in which the current literature needs to be improved. This research was executed by high-level experts and managers responsible for global business network B2B integration. However, the research was dominated by one industry domain, and therefore a more comprehensive exploration should be undertaken to cover a larger population of business sectors. Based on this research, the new quantitative survey could provide new possibilities to examine information logistics integration in digital business ecosystems. The value activities indicate that further studies should continue, especially with regard to the collaboration issues on integration, focusing on a user-centric approach. We should better understand how real-time information supports customer value creation by imbedding the information into the lifetime value of products and services. The aim of this research was to build competitive advantage through B2B integration to support a real-time economy. For practitioners, this research created several tools and concepts to improve value activities, information logistics integration design and management and orchestration models. Based on the results, the companies were able to better understand the formulation of the digital business ecosystem and the importance of joint efforts in collaboration. However, the challenge of incorporating this new knowledge into strategic processes in a multi-stakeholder environment remains. This challenge has been noted, and new projects have been established in pursuit of a real-time economy.

Tämän diplomityÃtutkimuksen tarkoituksena on luoda markkinaälyyn (MI) erikoistunut funktio suurelle, globaalisti toimivalle B2B-yritykselle. Tämän päivän muut-tuvilla markkinoilla, teollisuusyrityksen on oltava markkinalähtÃinen selviytyäkseen. Markkinatiedon tehokas hyÃdyntäminen ei pelkästään luo tietoa markkinoista, vaan tuottaa kilpailukykyistä tietoa ja toimii strategisen päätÃksenteon tukena pitkällä aikavälillä. Tämä tutkimus on kvalitatiivinen toimintatutkimus, joka sisältää kirjallisuuskat-sauksen, yritystapaustutkimuksen sekä syväanalyysin yrityksen MI-ympäristÃstä. Kirjallisuuskatsaus pitää sisällään teoriaa liittyen markkinaälyyn useassa eri kon-tekstissa, asiakassuhteeseen, sekä prosessinmallintamiseen. Empiiriseen osaa seuraa tutkimusmenetelmäkappale, joka sisältää kaksivaiheisen tutkimuksen mukaan lu-kien 20 päällikkÃtason haastattelua sekä yhden laaja-alaisen tyÃryhmätapaamisen. TyÃn tuloksena syntyy kolmivaiheinen tiekartta, jonka tarkoitus on toimia pohjana uuden MI-funktion rakentamiselle Case-yrityksessä. Tuloksen mukaan MI-funktio tulisi sijoittaa yrityksen asiakasrajapintaan sekä tukea yksikÃiden välistä integraa-tiota. Markkinaälyn jakaminen yrityksen sisällä vaatii käytäntÃjen, tarpeiden ja ta-voitteiden systemaattista viestintää eri organisaatiotasoille, jotta yritys voi edelleen saada asiakkaalta tarpeeseen vastaavaa tietoa. Viestintä yrityksen ja asiakkaan välil-lä on oltava molemminpuolista, jotta tulokset voisivat parantaa asiakassuhdetta. Kun asiakassuhde paranee, yritys voi oppia asiakkaalta arvokasta tietoa, markkinaälyä.
