This book chapter represents a synthesis of the work which started in my PhD and which has been the conceptual basis for all of my research since 1993. The chapter presents a method for scientists and managers to use for selecting the type of remotely sensed data to use to meet their information needs associated with a mapping, monitoring or modelling application. The work draws on results from several of my ARC projects, CRC Rainforest and Coastal projects and theses of P.Scarth , K.Joyce and C.Roelfsema.

The objective of the present study was to evaluate fetal biometry, Doppler values, and perinatal outcomes in pregnant women with antiphospholipid syndrome treated with acetylsalicylic acid and heparin. Twenty-five pregnant women with antiphospholipid syndrome using 100 mg/day acetylsalicylic acid and 5,000 IU heparin every 12 h were evaluated in this prospective observational study. Ultrasonography was performed between 24 and 38 weeks of gestational age to assess estimated fetal weight, placental thickness, amniotic fluid index, fetal biophysical profile and Doppler evaluation of maternal uterine arteries, and fetal middle cerebral and umbilical arteries. Data regarding Apgar score, gender, delivery mode, and birth weight and length were recorded after birth. The observed values for ultrasonographic assessment and perinatal outcomes were not very different from the expected values for normal pregnancies. The birth weight was 2863.3 +/- A 737.7 g (mean +/- A SD) and length was 46.8 +/- A 4.2 cm. Only one newborn (4%) had the 1-min Apgar score < 7 and all had the 5-min Apgar score > 7. Gestational and perinatal evaluation of pregnant women with antiphospholipid syndrome using both acetylsalicylic acid and heparin was reassuring.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most frequent form of arthritis, with major implications for individual and public health care without effective treatment available. The field of joint imaging, and particularly magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, has evolved rapidly owing to technical advances and the application of these to the field of clinical research. Cartilage imaging certainly is at the forefront of these developments. In this review, the different aspects of OA imaging and cartilage assessment, with an emphasis on recent advances, will be presented. The current role of radiography, including advances in the technology for joint space width assessment, will be discussed. The development of various MR imaging techniques capable of facilitating assessment of cartilage morphology and the methods for evaluating the biochemical composition of cartilage will be presented. Advances in quantitative morphologic cartilage assessment and semiquantitative whole-organ assessment will be reviewed. Although MR imaging is the most important modality in imaging of OA and cartilage, others such as ultrasonography play a complementary role that will be discussed briefly.

Background: Nutrition therapy (NT) is essential for the care of critically ill children. Inadequate feeding leads to malnutrition and may increase the patient`s risk of morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study was to describe the NT used in a tertiary pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). Methods: The authors evaluated NT administered to 90 consecutive patients who were hospitalized for 7 days in the PICU of Instituto da Crianca, Hospital das Clinicas, Universidade de Sao Paulo, Brazil. NT was established according to the protocol provided by the institution`s NT team. NT provided a balance of fluids and nutrients and was monitored with a weekly anthropometric nutrition assessment and an evaluation of complications. Results: NT was initiated, on average, within 72 hours of hospitalization. Most children (80%) received enteral nutrition (EN) therapy; of these, 35% were fed orally and the rest via nasogastric or postpyloric tube. There were gastrointestinal complications in patients (5%) who needed a postpyloric tube. Parenteral nutrition (PN) was used in only 10% of the cases, and the remaining 10% received mixed NT (EN + PN). The average calorie and protein intake was 82 kcal/kg and 2.7 g/kg per day. Arm circumference and triceps skinfold thickness decreased. Conclusions: The use of EN was prevalent in the tertiary PICU, and few clinical complications occurred. There was no statistically significant change in most anthropometric indicators evaluated during hospitalization, which suggests that NT probably helped patients maintain their nutrition status. The report was commissioned by the Department of Education, Science and Training to investigate the perceived efficacy of middle years programmes in all States and Territories in improving the quality of teaching, learning and student outcomes, especially in literacy and numeracy and for student members of particular target groups. These target groups included students from lower socio-economic communities, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, students with a language background other than English, rural and remote students, and students struggling with the transition from middle/upper primary to the junior secondary years. The project involved large scale national and international literature reviews on Australian and international middle years approaches as well as an analysis of key literacy and numeracy teaching and learning strategies being used. In the report, there is emergent evidence of the relative efficacy of a combination of explicit state policy, dedicated funding and curriculum and professional development frameworks that are focused on the improvement of classroom pedagogy in the middle years. The programs that evidenced the greatest current and potential value for target group students tended to have developed in state policy environments that encouraged a structural rather than adjunct approach to middle years innovations. The authors conclude that in order to translate the gains made into sustainable improvement of educational results in literacy and numeracy for target groups, there is a need for a second generation of middle years theorising, research, development and practice.
