An oscillating droplet method combined with electromagnetic levitation has been applied to determine the surface tensions of liquid pure iron, nickel and iron-nickel alloys as a function of the temperature. The natural frequency of the oscillating droplet is evaluated using a Fourier analyser. The theoretical background of this method and the experimental set-up were described, and the influence of magnetic field strength was also discussed. The experimental results were compared with those of other investigators and interpreted using theoretical models (Butler's equation, subregular and perfect solution model for the surface phase).

On a characteristic surface Omega of a hyperbolic system of first-order equations in multi-dimensions (x, t), there exits a compatibility condition which is in the form of a transport equation along a bicharacteristic on Omega. This result can be interpreted also as a transport equation along rays of the wavefront Omega(t) in x-space associated with Omega. For a system of quasi-linear equations, the ray equations (which has two distinct parts) and the transport equation form a coupled system of underdetermined equations. As an example of this bicharacteristic formulation, we consider two-dimensional unsteady flow of an ideal magnetohydrodynamics gas with a plane aligned magnetic field. For any mode of propagation in this two-dimensional flow, there are three ray equations: two for the spatial coordinates x and y and one for the ray diffraction. In spite of little longer calculations, the final four equations (three ray equations and one transport equation) for the fast magneto-acoustic wave are simple and elegant and cannot be derived in these simple forms by use of a computer program like REDUCE.

The non-oxidative decarboxylation of aromatic acids is a poorly understood reaction. The transformation of 2,3-dihydroxybenzoic acid to catechol in the fungal metabolism of indole is a prototype of such a reaction. 2,3-Dihydroxybenzoic acid decarboxylase (EC 4.1.1.46) which catalyzes this reaction was purified to homogeneity from anthranilate induced cultures of Aspergillus oryzae using affinity chromatography. The enzyme did not require cofactors like NAD(+), PLP, TPP or metal ions for its activity. There was no spectral evidence for the presence of enzyme bound cofactors. The preparation, which was adjudged homogeneous by the criteria of SDS-PAGE, sedimentation analysis and N-terminal analysis, was characterized for its physicochemical and kinetic parameters. The enzyme was inactivated by group-specific modifiers like diethyl pyrocarbonate (DEPC) and N-ethylmaleimide (NEM). The kinetics of inactivation by DEPC suggested the presence of a single class of essential histidine residues, the second order rate constant of inactivation for which was 12.5 M(-1) min(-1). A single class of cysteine residues was modified by NEM with a second order rate constant of 33 M(-1) min(-1). Substrate analogues protected the enzyme against inactivation by both DEPC and NEM, suggesting the Location of the essential histidine and cysteine to be at the active site of the enzyme. The incorporation of radiolabelled NEM in a differential labelling experiment was 0.73 mol per mol subunit confirming the presence of a single essential cysteine per active-site. Differentially labelled enzyme was enzymatically cleaved and the peptide bearing the label was purified and sequenced. The active-site peptide LLGLAETCK and the N-terminal sequence MLGKIALEEAFALPRFEEKT did not bear any similarity to sequences reported in the Swiss-Prot Protein Sequence Databank, a reflection probably of the unique primary structure of this novel enzyme. The sequences reported in this study will appear in the Swiss-Prot Protein Sequence Databank under the accession number P80402.

A numerical study of the ductile rupture in a metal foil constrained between two stiff ceramic blocks is performed. The finite element analysis is carried out under the conditions of mode I, plane strain, small-scale yielding. The rate-independent version of the Gurson model that accounts for the ductile failure mechanisms of microvoid nucleation, growth and coalescence is employed to represent the behavior of the metal foil. Different distributions of void nucleating sites in the metal foil are considered for triggering the initiation of discrete voids. The results clearly show that far-field triaxiality-induced cavitation is the dominant failure mode when the spacing of the void nucleating sites is large. On the contrary, void coalescence near the notch tip is found to be the operative failure mechanism when closely spaced void nucleating sites are considered.

Magnetization measurements below 50 K on ceramic La2?ySryCu1?xNixO4+? (y = 0.1, 0.2; 0less-than-or-equals, slantxless-than-or-equals, slant0.5) show a progressive diminution of superconducting properties with increasing x. The larger suppressive action of Ni in the y=0.1 system than that for y=0.2 is attributed to the hole-compensating effect of Ni3+. The assumption that nickel is in the 3+ state satisfactorily explains: (1) the reduction in hole concentration, (2) a right-shift of the Tc versus y curve with x, and (3) the low magnetic moment carried by Ni atoms, in the La2?ySryCu1?xNixO4+? system.

The spin and charge excitation gaps and charge and spin density distributions have been studied in macrocyclic binuclear aza-amido copper (II) complexes employing a model Hamiltonian. The spin gaps depend on the σ-orbital occupancies, and for small gaps, the exchange integral between the σ orbitals of the bridging oxygen atoms, KOO, which is sensitive to geometry, determines the low-lying spin excitations. The singlet—singlet gaps also depend upon the σ-orbital occupancy but are weakly dependent upon KOO.

C-70 films deposited on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG), Ag(110), Ag(111) and Pt(110) substrates have been investigated by scanning tunnelling microscopy. Interesting observations on novel molecular arrangements, as well as orientational disorder, are presented. Solid solutions of C-60 and C-70 show interesting packing of these molecules when deposited on HOPG.

Transforming Growth Factors-beta (TGF-beta s) have been described in many vertebrate species of amphibians, aves and mammals. In this report we demonstrate the presence of TGF-beta 2 in pisces. TGF-beta 2 has been cloned from a fish, Cyrinus carpio, by RT-PCR using degenerate oligonucleotide primers. Sequence analysis of the amplified product and alignment of the deduced amino acid sequence with the human TGF-beta 2 amino acid sequence revealed 81% and 93% identity in the precursor and the mature regions, respectively. The northern blot analysis of fish heart RNA shows a major messenger RNA species of about 8.0 kb and two messages of very low abundance of about 5.0 kb and 4.0 kb. The identification of TGF-beta 2 isoform in Pisces and it's high degree of homology with the mammalian isoform suggests that among all TGF-beta isoforms, TGF-beta 2 is the most conserved during evolution. Optical and structural properties of reactive ion beam sputter deposited CeO2 films as a function of oxygen partial pressures (P-O2) and substrate temperatures (T-s) have been investigated. The films deposited at ambient temperature with P-O2 of 0.01 Pa have shown a refractive index of 2.36 which increased to 2.44 at 400 degrees C. Refractive index and extinction coefficient are sensitive up to a T-s of similar to 200 degrees C. Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD) have been used to characterise the structural properties. A preferential orientation of (220) was observed up to a T-s of 200 degrees C and it changed to (200) at 400 degrees C: and above. Raman line broadening, peak shift and XRD broadening indicate the formation of nanocrystalline phase for the films deposited up to a substrate temperature of 300 degrees C. However, crystallinity of the films were better for T-s values above 300 degrees C. In general both optical and structural properties were unusual compared to the films deposited by conventional electron beam evaporation, but were similar in some aspects to those deposited by ion-assisted deposition. Apart from thermal effects, this behavior is also attributed to the bombardment of backscattered ions/neutrals on the growing film as well as the higher kinetic energy of the condensing species, together resulting in increased packing density. Potassium titanyl phosphate (KTP) and its isomorphs have received enormous attention in the last 2 decades. In particular, KTP assumes importance due to its large nonlinear optic and electrooptic coefficients together with the broad thermal and angular acceptance for second harmonic generation. This article provides an overview of the material aspects, structural, physical, and chemical properties and device feasibility of the KTP family of crystals. Some of the current areas of research and development along with their significance in understanding the physical properties as well as device applications are addressed. Optical waveguide fabrication processes and characteristics with their relevance to the present-day technology are highlighted. Studies performed so far have enabled us to understand the fundamental aspects of these materials and what needs to be pursued vigorously is the exploitation of their device applications to the maximum extent.

The low thermal expansion ceramic system, Ca1-xSrxZr4P6O24, for the compositions with x = 0, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75 and 1 was synthesized by solid-state reaction. The sintering characteristics were ascertained by bulk density measurements. The fracture surface microstructure examined by scanning electron microscopy showed the average grain size of 2.47 mum for all the compositions. The thermal expansion data for these ceramic systems over the temperature range 25-800degreesC is reported. The sinterability of various solid solutions and the hysteresis in dilatometric behaviour are shown to be related to the crystallographic thermal expansion anisotropy. A steady increase in the amount of porosity and critical grain size with increase in x is suggested to explain the observed decrease in the hysteresis.

The effect of a gas flow field on the size of raceway has been studied experimentally using a two-dimensional (2-D) cold model. It is observed that as the blast velocity from the tuyere increases, raceway size increases, and when the blast velocity is decreased from its highest value, raceway size does not change much until the velocity reaches a critical velocity. Below the critical velocity, raceway size decreases with decreasing velocity but is always larger than that for the same velocity when the velocity increased. This phenomenon is called "raceway hysteresis." Raceway hysteresis has been studied in the presence of different gas flow rates and different particle densities. Raceway hysteresis has been observed in all the experiments. The effect of liquid flow, with various superficial velocities, on raceway hysteresis has also been studied. A study of raceway size hysteresis shows that interparticle and particle-wall friction have a very large effect on raceway size. A hypothesis has been proposed to describe the hysteresis phenomenon in the packed beds. The relevance of hysteresis to blast furnace raceways has been discussed. Existing literature correlations for raceway size ignore the frictional effects. Therefore, their applicability to the ironmaking blast furnace is questionable.

Although restriction enzymes are widely distributed in nature, many bacterial genera are yet to be explored for the presence of this important class of enzymes. We have purified and characterized a new type II restriction endonuclease, OfoI from a nonheterocyst cyanobacterium Oscillatoria foreaui. The recognition sequence has been determined by primer extension analysis. The purified enzyme OfoI recognizes and cleaves the palindromic hexanucleotide 5'-Cdown arrowYCGRG-3', generating 5'-protruding ends.
