The inorganic/polymer hybrid films with good luminescent properties have been obtained by the sol - gel process via incorporating the polymer component doped with rare earth complexes. These films exhibit good toughness and transparency. Their fluorescence spectra and lifetimes indicate that they all have the characteristic luminescence of the central rare earth ions. The lifetimes of these films are longer than those of pure complexes. TEM have showed that the rare earth complexes are dispersed homogeneously in SiO2/PVB interpenetratiny networks, and the dispersed size is between 20 and 30 nn.

Ternary complexes of europium and terbium with paraaminobenzoic acid and 1,10-phenanthroline (Eu(p-ABA)(3). phen . 2H(2)O and Tb(p-ABA)(3). phen . 2H(2)O, where p-HABA = paraaminobenzoic acid and phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) were introduced into a silica matrix by sol-gel method. The luminescence behavior of the complexes in silica gels was studied in comparison with the. corresponding solid-state complexes by means of emission, excitation spectra, and Lifetimes. Within the range of effective dopant concentrations, the luminescence intensities of rare-earth complexes in silica gel increase with the increasing of their dopant concentration. The lifetimes of rare-earth ions (Eu3+ and-Tb3+) in silica gel doped with europium and terbium complexes become longer than those in pure complexes. Very small amounts of rare-earth complexes doped in silica gel matrix can exhibit excellent luminescence properties, (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd.

Some novel binary and ternary complexes of rare earth(Gd, Eu,Tb) with N-Phenylanthranilic acid and 1,10-Phenanthroline were synthesized by homogenous precipitation and their compositions were characterized by,elemental analysis, IR spectra and UV-Vis spectra, The triplet state energies of N-Phenylanthranilic acid was determined to be 24 330 cm(-1) with the phosphorescence spectra of its gadolinium complexes and the energy match between the ligand and the central rare earth ions was studied. The photophysical properties such as luminescence properties and intramolecular energy transfer match between rare earth ions and ligands and between ligands were discussed. The result indicates that terbium complexes with N-Phenylanthranilic acid and 1,10-Phenanthroline have excellent luminescence properties.

Three organo-soluble polyimide powders have been synthesized. Their imidization was verified by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) techniques. The amorphous morphology of their thin films were confirmed by X-ray diffraction. Polyimide thin films were prepared by solution casting or spin coating. UV-visible transmission spectra of thin films revealed that they are almost transparent in the range of visible light. With in-plane orientation, revealed by FTIR spectra, negative birefringence (Delta n) of thin films were observed, and refractive indices of the thin films along the film plane (n(TE)) and normal to the plane (n(TM)) were measured by a prism coupler. Because of negative birefringence of the thin films, they tan be substituted for the compensation films for twisted nematic liquid crystal displays (TN-LCDs) to extend their viewing angles. In this paper, a 90 degrees C TN-LCD and 120 degrees C TN-LCD were taken as examples to show the compensation effect of thin films of a qualified polyimide. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A. The crystal structure of H3PMo6W6O40 3C2H6O was determined by X-ray crystallography and refined to R = 0.0698 based on 2279 observed reflections to give unit cell parameters a = 16.48(2)Angstrom, c = 25.205(5)Angstrom , gamma = 120 degrees, hexagonal, space group R (3) over bar. The organic solvent molecules were characterized also by IR, H NMR spectra. Weak interaction existed between the organic solvent and the heteropoly acid in the secondary structure. The novel compound showed different behaviours in solubility, oxidizability and photosensitivity in comparison with classical dodeca heteropolyacid of molybdenum and tungsten. Binary and ternary complexes of europium and terbium with conjugated carboxylic acid (nicotinic acid and 3,4-furandicarboxylic acid) and 1,10-phenanthroline were introduced into silica gel by the sol-gel method. The luminescence behavior of the complexes in silica gels was studied compared with the corresponding solid state complexes by means of emission, excitation spectra and lifetimes. The result indicated that the rare earth ions (EU3+ and Tb3+) showed fewer emission lines and slightly lower emission intensities in the silica gel than those in pure rare earth complexes. The lifetimes of rare earth ions (EU3+ and Tb3+) in silica gel doped with rare earth complexes became longer than those in pure rare earth complexes. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A.

Four new compounds AgLnW(2)O(8) (Ln = Eu, Gd, Tb and Dy) are prepared by solid-state reactions. They crystallize with a scheelite-related monoclinic symmetry. Infrared (IR) spectra show complicated absorption transitions in the region of 1000-400 cm(-1) that are similar to those of AgLnMo(2)O(8). Broad excitation and emission bands of the tungstate group are observed in AgGdW2O8 and AgTbW2O8 with a large Stokes shift, 12 573 and 12 387 cm(-1), respectively. Excitation and emission spectra of AgLnW(2)O(8) (Ln = Eu, Gd and Tb) show that energy transfer from the tungstate to EU3+, Gd3+ and Tb3+ occurs and that Eu3+ ions occupy a single crystallographic site with the C-2 Site symmetry. Terbium(III) stearoylanthranilate has been prepared as a high property Z-type Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) film on various substrates by a vertical transfer process. The UV-visible absorption spectra and the low angle X-ray diffraction peaks have been collected in order to investigate the molecular arrangement and aggregation in the LB films. The average molecular orientation in multilayer stacking was determined by Attenuated Total Reflection Spectroscopy. The influence of the chemical environment of terbium within the LB films on the luminescence properties has been discussed. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science S.A.

Single crystal of KZnF3 : Eu3+ has been grown by means of Bridgman-Stockbarger technique in Ar atmosphere, The emission and excitation spectra of europium ion were measured, The results show that a small amount of Eu2+ exists in the crystal, The existence of Eu2+ ions was also confirmed by ESR data, The valence change of Eu ions during the crystal growth is due to unequivalent substitution of Eu3+ ions for the lattice ions. The sites possibly occupied by Eu ions in this crystal were also discussed.

The synthesis temperature of YGa3B4O12 and the effect of the synthesis temperature and chromium doping on the luminescence properties were studied. YGa3-xCrxB4O12 were synthesized and their magnetic properties were described. Results show that the fluorescence intensity increases with the increasing of synthesis temperature. The structure of compounds was stabilized, and their emission spectra were changed when small quantity of chromium was doped in. The magnetic susceptibilities increase with the increasing of Cr3+ concentration.

K4H2CoW12O40. 2Ti02 . 9H(2)O crystallizes from an aqueous solution of Na2WO4, Co(OAc)(2) and Ti(SO4)(2). The compound has very similar i.r. and u.v. spectra to those of [CoW12O40](6-) and [CoW11TiO40](8-) but its polarographic behaviour is different from that of [CoW11TiO40](8-) and exhibits only reduction of tungsten(VI). A single crystal structural analysis indicates that this compound consists of the heteropolyanion [CoW12O40](6-), titanium-oxygen chain, potassium ions and water molecules.
