Objective: The objective of this study is to investigate the association between processed and unprocessed red meat consumption and prostate cancer (PCa) stage in a homogenous Mexican-American population. Methods: This population-based case-control study had a total of 582 participants (287 cases with histologically confirmed adenocarcinoma of the prostate gland and 295 age and ethnicity-matched controls) that were all residing in the Southeast region of Texas from 1998 to 2006. All questionnaire information was collected using a validated data collection instrument. Statistical Analysis: Descriptive analyses included Student's t-test and Pearson's Chi-square tests. Odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals were calculated to quantify the association between nutritional factors and PCa stage. A multivariable model was used for unconditional logistic regression. Results: After adjusting for relevant covariates, those who consume high amounts of processed red meat have a non-significant increased odds of being diagnosed with localized PCa (OR = 1.60 95% CI: 0.85 - 3.03) and total PCa (OR = 1.43 95% CI: 0.81 - 2.52) but not for advanced PCa (OR = 0.91 95% CI: 1.37 - 2.23). Interestingly, high consumption of carbohydrates shows a significant reduction in the odds of being diagnosed with total PCa and advanced PCa (OR = 0.43 95% CI: 0.24 - 0.77; OR = 0.27 95% CI: 0.10 - 0.71, respectively). However, consuming high amounts of energy from protein and fat was shown to increase the odds of being diagnosed with advanced PCa (OR = 4.62 95% CI: 1.69 - 12.59; OR = 2.61 95% CI: 1.04 - 6.58, respectively). Conclusion: Mexican-Americans who consume high amounts of energy from protein and fat had increased odds of being diagnosed with advanced PCa, while high amounts of carbohydrates reduced the odds of being diagnosed with total and advanced PCa.^

This article presents and technically describes a new field spectro-goniometer system for the ground-based characterization of the surface reflectance anisotropy under natural illumination conditions developed at the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI). The spectro-goniometer consists of a Manual Transportable Instrument platform for ground-based Spectro-directional observations (ManTIS), and a hyperspectral sensor system. The presented measurement strategy shows that the AWI ManTIS field spectro-goniometer can deliver high quality hemispherical conical reflectance factor (HCRF) measurements with a pointing accuracy of ±6 cm within the constant observation center. The sampling of a ManTIS hemisphere (up to 30° viewing zenith, 360° viewing azimuth) needs approx. 18 min. The developed data processing chain in combination with the software used for the semi-automatic control provides a reliable method to reduce temporal effects during the measurements. The presented visualization and analysis approaches of the HCRF data of an Arctic low growing vegetation showcase prove the high quality of spectro-goniometer measurements. The patented low-cost and lightweight ManTIS instrument platform can be customized for various research needs and is available for purchase.

The confluence of three-dimensional (3D) virtual worlds with social networks imposes on software agents, in addition to conversational functions, the same behaviours as those common to human-driven avatars. In this paper, we explore the possibilities of the use of metabots (metaverse robots) with motion capabilities in complex virtual 3D worlds and we put forward a learning model based on the techniques used in evolutionary computation for optimizing the fuzzy controllers which will subsequently be used by metabots for moving around a virtual environment.

This paper describes new approaches to improve the local and global approximation (matching) and modeling capability of Takagi–Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy model. The main aim is obtaining high function approximation accuracy and fast convergence. The main problem encountered is that T-S identification method cannot be applied when the membership functions are overlapped by pairs. This restricts the application of the T-S method because this type of membership function has been widely used during the last 2 decades in the stability, controller design of fuzzy systems and is popular in industrial control applications. The approach developed here can be considered as a generalized version of T-S identification method with optimized performance in approximating nonlinear functions. We propose a noniterative method through weighting of parameters approach and an iterative algorithm by applying the extended Kalman filter, based on the same idea of parameters’ weighting. We show that the Kalman filter is an effective tool in the identification of T-S fuzzy model. A fuzzy controller based linear quadratic regulator is proposed in order to show the effectiveness of the estimation method developed here in control applications. An illustrative example of an inverted pendulum is chosen to evaluate the robustness and remarkable performance of the proposed method locally and globally in comparison with the original T-S model. Simulation results indicate the potential, simplicity, and generality of the algorithm. An illustrative example is chosen to evaluate the robustness. In this paper, we prove that these algorithms converge very fast, thereby making them very practical to use.

A video-aware unequal loss protection (ULP) system for protecting RTP video streaming in bursty packet loss networks is proposed. Just considering the relevance of the frame, the state of the channel and the bitrate constraints of the protection bitstream, our algorithm selects in real time the most suitable frames to be protected through forward error correction (FEC) techniques. It benefits from a wise RTP encapsulation that allows working at a frame level without requiring any further process than that of parsing RTP headers, so it is perfectly suitable to be included in commercial transmitters. The simulation results show how our proposed ULP technique outperforms non-smart schemes.

We present a novel approach using both sustained vowels and connected speech, to detect obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) cases within a homogeneous group of speakers. The proposed scheme is based on state-of-the-art GMM-based classifiers, and acknowledges specifically the way in which acoustic models are trained on standard databases, as well as the complexity of the resulting models and their adaptation to specific data. Our experimental database contains a suitable number of utterances and sustained speech from healthy (i.e control) and OSA Spanish speakers. Finally, a 25.1% relative reduction in classification error is achieved when fusing continuous and sustained speech classifiers. Index Terms: obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), gaussian mixture models (GMMs), background model (BM), classifier fusion.

EURATOM/CIEMAT and Technical University of Madrid (UPM) have been involved in the development of a FPSC [1] (Fast Plant System Control) prototype for ITER, based on PXIe (PCI eXtensions for Instrumentation). One of the main focuses of this project has been data acquisition and all the related issues, including scientific data archiving. Additionally, a new data archiving solution has been developed to demonstrate the obtainable performances and possible bottlenecks of scientific data archiving in Fast Plant System Control. The presented system implements a fault tolerant architecture over a GEthernet network where FPSC data are reliably archived on remote, while remaining accessible to be redistributed, within the duration of a pulse. The storing service is supported by a clustering solution to guaranty scalability, so that FPSC management and configuration may be simplified, and a unique view of all archived data provided. All the involved components have been integrated under EPICS [2] (Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System), implementing in each case the necessary extensions, state machines and configuration process variables. The prototyped solution is based on the NetCDF-4 [3] and [4] (Network Common Data Format) file format in order to incorporate important features, such as scientific data models support, huge size files management, platform independent codification, or single-writer/multiple-readers concurrency. In this contribution, a complete description of the above mentioned solution is presented, together with the most relevant results of the tests performed, while focusing in the benefits and limitations of the applied technologies.

This paper proposes an interleaved multiphase buck converter with minimum time control strategy for envelope amplifiers in high efficiency RF power amplifiers. The solution of the envelope amplifier is to combine the proposed converter with a linear regulator in series. High system efficiency can be obtained through modulating the supply voltage of the envelope amplifier with the fast output voltage variation of the converter working with several particular duty cycles that achieve total ripple cancellation. The transient model for minimum time control is explained, and the calculation of transient times that are pre-calculated and inserted into a look-up table is presented. The filter design trade-off that limits capability of envelope modulation is also discussed. The experimental results verify the fast voltage transient obtained with a 4-phase buck prototype.

sharedcircuitmodels is presented in this work. The sharedcircuitsmodelapproach of sociocognitivecapacities recently proposed by Hurley in The sharedcircuitsmodel (SCM): how control, mirroring, and simulation can enable imitation, deliberation, and mindreading. Behavioral and Brain Sciences 31(1) (2008) 1–22 is enriched and improved in this work. A five-layer computational architecture for designing artificialcognitivecontrolsystems is proposed on the basis of a modified sharedcircuitsmodel for emulating sociocognitive experiences such as imitation, deliberation, and mindreading. In order to show the enormous potential of this approach, a simplified implementation is applied to a case study. An artificialcognitivecontrolsystem is applied for controlling force in a manufacturing process that demonstrates the suitability of the suggested approach

An important goal in the field of intelligent transportation systems (ITS) is to provide driving aids aimed at preventing accidents and reducing the number of traffic victims. The commonest traffic accidents in urban areas are due to sudden braking that demands a very fast response on the part of drivers. Attempts to solve this problem have motivated many ITS advances including the detection of the intention of surrounding cars using lasers, radars or cameras. However, this might not be enough to increase safety when there is a danger of collision. Vehicle to vehicle communications are needed to ensure that the other intentions of cars are also available. The article describes the development of a controller to perform an emergency stop via an electro-hydraulic braking system employed on dry asphalt. An original V2V communication scheme based on WiFi cards has been used for broadcasting positioning information to other vehicles. The reliability of the scheme has been theoretically analyzed to estimate its performance when the number of vehicles involved is much higher. This controller has been incorporated into the AUTOPIA program control for automatic cars. The system has been implemented in Citroën C3 Pluriel, and various tests were performed to evaluate its operation.

Abstract Nowadays three dimensional imaging techniques are common in several fields, but es-pecially in biomedical imaging, where we can find a wide range of techniques including: Laser Scanning Confocal Microscopy, Laser Scanning Two Photon Microscopy, Light Sheet Fluorescence Microscopy, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Positron Emission To-mography, Optical Coherence Tomography, 3D Ultrasound Imaging, etc. A common denominator of all those applications being the constant need for further increasing resolution and quality of the acquired images. Interestingly, in some of the mentioned three-dimensional imaging techniques a remarkable situation arises: while a single volume does not contain enough information to represent the object being imaged within the quality parameters required by the final application, the acquisition scheme allows recording several volumes which represent different views of a given object, with each of the views providing complementary information. In this kind of situation one can get a better understanding of the object by combining several views instead of looking at each of them separately. Within such context, in this PhD Thesis we propose, develop and test new image processing methodologies based on the discrete wavelet transform for the combination, or fusion, of several views containing complementary information of a given object. The proposed fusion method exploits the scale and orientation decomposition capabil¬ities of the discrete wavelet transform to integrate in a single volume all the available information distributed among the set of acquired views. The work focuses in two different biomedical imaging modalities which provide such multi-view datasets. The first one is a particular fluorescence microscopy technique, Light-Sheet Fluorescence Microscopy, used for imaging and gaining understanding of the early development of live embryos from different animal models (like zebrafish or sea urchin). The second is Delayed Enhancement Magnetic Resonance Imaging, which is a valuable tool for assessing the viability of myocardial tissue on patients suffering from different cardiomyopathies. As part of this work, the proposed method was implemented and then validated on both imaging modalities. For the fluorescence microscopy application, the fusion results show improved contrast and detail discrimination when compared to any of the individual views and the method does not rely on prior knowledge of the system’s point spread function (PSF). Moreover, the results have shown improved performance with respect to previous PSF independent methods. With respect to its application to Delayed Enhancement Magnetic Resonance Imaging, the resulting fused volumes show a quantitative sharpness improvement and enable an easier and more complete interpretation of complex three-dimensional scar and heterogeneous tissue information in ischemic cardiomyopathy patients. In both applications, the results of this thesis are currently in use in the clinical and research centers with which the author collaborated during his work. An imple¬mentation of the fusion method has also been made freely available to the scientific community. Finally, an international patent application has been filed covering the visualization method developed for the Magnetic Resonance Imaging application.

Opportunities offered by high performance computing provide a significant degree of promise in the enhancement of the performance of real-time flood forecasting systems. In this paper, a real-time framework for probabilistic flood forecasting through data assimilation is presented. The distributed rainfall-runoff real-time interactive basin simulator (RIBS) model is selected to simulate the hydrological process in the basin. Although the RIBS model is deterministic, it is run in a probabilistic way through the results of calibration developed in a previous work performed by the authors that identifies the probability distribution functions that best characterise the most relevant model parameters. Adaptive techniques improve the result of flood forecasts because the model can be adapted to observations in real time as new information is available. The new adaptive forecast model based on genetic programming as a data assimilation technique is compared with the previously developed flood forecast model based on the calibration results. Both models are probabilistic as they generate an ensemble of hydrographs, taking the different uncertainties inherent in any forecast process into account. The Manzanares River basin was selected as a case study, with the process being computationally intensive as it requires simulation of many replicas of the ensemble in real time.
