This bachelor’s thesis, written for Lappeenranta University of Technology and implemented in a medium-sized enterprise (SME), examines a distributed document migration system. The system was created to migrate a large number of electronic documents, along with their metadata, from one document management system to another, so as to enable a rapid switchover of an enterprise resource planning systems inside the company. The paper examines, through theoretical analysis, messaging as a possible enabler of distributing applications and how it naturally fits an event based model, whereby system transitions and states are expressed through recorded behaviours. This is put into practice by analysing the implemented migration systems and how the core components, MassTransit, RabbitMQ and MongoDB, were orchestrated together to realize such a system. As a result, the paper presents an architecture for a scalable and distributed system that could migrate hundreds of thousands of documents over weekend, serving its goals in enabling a rapid system switchover.

Porphyrias are a family of inherited diseases, each associated with a partial defect in one of the enzymes of the heme biosynthetic pathway. In six of the eight porphyrias described, the main clinical manifestation is skin photosensitivity brought about by the action of light on porphyrins, which are deposited in the upper epidermal layer of the skin. Porphyrins absorb light energy intensively in the UV region, and to a lesser extent in the long visible bands, resulting in transitions to excited electronic states. The excited porphyrin may react directly with biological structures (type I reactions) or with molecular oxygen, generating excited singlet oxygen (type II reactions). Besides this well-known photodynamic action of porphyrins, a novel light-independent effect of porphyrins has been described. Irradiation of enzymes in the presence of porphyrins mainly induces type I reactions, although type II reactions could also occur, further increasing the direct non-photodynamic effect of porphyrins on proteins and macromolecules. Conformational changes of protein structure are induced by porphyrins in the dark or under UV light, resulting in reduced enzyme activity and increased proteolytic susceptibility. The effect of porphyrins depends not only on their physico-chemical properties but also on the specific site on the protein on which they act. Porphyrin action alters the functionality of the enzymes of the heme biosynthetic pathway exacerbating the metabolic deficiencies in porphyrias. Light energy absorption by porphyrins results in the generation of oxygen reactive species, overcoming the protective cellular mechanisms and leading to molecular, cell and tissue damage, thus amplifying the porphyric picture.

Tutkielman nimi käännettynä suomeksi on Lentokoneiden omasuojajärjestelmien kyllästäminen – mahdollisuuksia kätkeytymiseen. Siinä keskitytään etsimään aktiivisia, ilmauhkaa kohti säteileviä keinoja ilmahyökkääjän, lentokoneen tai helikopterin, omasuojajärjestelmän harhauttamiseksi. Järjestelmät pyrkivät varoittamaan lentäjää laser- ja tutkasäteilyhavainnoista sekä ohjuksen laukaisusta ja lähestymisestä. Omasuojajärjestelmiin kuuluviin vastakeinoihin tutkimus ei keskity. Tavoitteena harhauttamisella on ilmapuolustuksen todellisen määrän ja sijainnin suojaaminen. Epätietoisuus voi saada lentäjän tekemään vääriä johtopäätöksiä. Työ ei fokusoi harhauttamisen taktiseen kehykseen työn kannalta tarpeellista määrää enempää. Tietosuojasyistä tutkimus ei käsittele käytössä olevien omasuojajärjestelmien operatiivisia ominaisuuksia vaan käsittelee teoriaa niiden taustalla. Tutkimus tehtiin käyttäen taustatutkimukselle enemmän tyypillistä kirjallisuustutkimusta. Jo tutki-muksen alkuvaiheessa oli oletettavaa, että elektronisiin sensoreihin perustuvaa omasuojajärjestelmää pystytään harhauttamaan. Systeemianalysoinnilla pyrittiin löytämään vastauksia tähän olettamukseen. Omasuojajärjestelmästä muodostettiin jo tutkimuksen varhaisessa vaiheessa malli. Tieteellistä kirjallisuutta omasuojajärjestelmistä on olemassa jonkin verran, ja niistä löydettyä tietoa omasuojajärjestelmien ominaisuuksista ja sensoreista yhdistettiin malliin niin, että siitä saatiin mahdollisimman tarkka systeemin kuvaus todellisesta omasuojajärjestelmästä. Analyysin tavoitteena oli löytää niitä kriteereitä, joilla omasuojajärjestelmä saataisiin kohtuullisen tehokkaasti uskomaan harhautusta oikeaksi hälytykseksi. Ohjuksen laukaisusta varoittava sensori perustuu ohjuksen moottorin muodostaman pilven lämpö-säteilyyn. Säteily kuitenkin muuttuu lennon eri vaiheissa, mikä tuottaa haasteita järjestelmälle. Millimetrialueen tutkan käyttö varoittimen sensorina on myös yksi vaihtoehto. Laser-varoittimet toimivat koko sillä taajuusalueella, mitä sotilaskäytössä tulenjohtamiseen ja ohjusten ohjaamiseen käytetään. Tutkavaroittimen tutkimus on vielä kesken. Löydettyjä tuloksia analysoimalla tulen tässä vaiheessa hieman ristiriitaisiin tuloksiin. Lämpösäteilyn käytön suurin haaste on sen eteneminen ilmakehässä. Varoittimen tavoitekaan ei ole toimia kymmentä kilometriä pidemmälle. Yksi mahdollinen ratkaisu on suunnitella ja toteuttaa raketti, jonka tuottaa lämpösäteilyä kuten tietty puolustavan joukon käytössä oleva ohjus. Jos koneessa on kuitenkin myös millimetrialueen tutka tukemassa varoitusjärjestelmää, hankaloituu rakettiharhautus merkittävästi, koska sen pitäisi oletettavasti olla lentokoneen kanssa melko tarkasti kohtaavalla reitillä. Laser-varoitin on ilmeisesti herkin järjestelmistä, koska se voi tietyissä olosuhteissa ja varsinkin matalalla lentokorkeudella aiheuttaa paljon vääriä hälytyksiä ilman tarkoituksellista harhauttamista. Laserin käyttö yhdistettynä raketin laukaisuun saattaisi tuottaa halutun tuloksen. Tutkavaroittimen harhautus onnistuu, jos valelaitteen signaali on uskottavan tarkka.

The objective of the present investigation was to compare the sensitivity of an electronic nociceptive mechanical paw test with classical mechanical tests to quantify the intensity variation of inflammatory nociception. The electronic pressure-meter test consists of inducing the hindpaw flexion reflex by poking the plantar region with a polypropylene pipette tip adapted to a hand-held force transducer. This method was compared with the classical von Frey filaments test and with the rat paw constant pressure test, a modification of the Randall and Selitto test developed by our group. When comparing the three methods, the electronic pressure-meter and the rat paw constant pressure test, but not the von Frey filaments test, detected time vs treatment interactions in prostaglandin E2 (PGE2)-induced hypernociception. Both methods also detected the PGE2-induced hypernociception in dose- (50-400 ng/paw) and time- (1-4 h) dependent manners, and time vs treatment interactions induced by carrageenin (25-400 µg/paw). Furthermore, the electronic pressure-meter test was more sensitive at early times, whereas the constant pressure test was more sensitive at later times. Moreover, the electronic pressure-meter test detected the dose-dependent antinociceptive effect of local indomethacin (30-300 µg/paw) and dipyrone (80-320 µg/paw) on carrageenin- (200 µg/paw) and PGE2- (100 ng/paw) induced hypernociception, respectively, and also detected the ineffectiveness of indomethacin (300 µg) on the effect of PGE2. Our results show that the electronic pressure-meter provides a sensitive, objective and quantitative mechanical nociceptive test that could be useful to characterize new nociceptive inflammatory mediators and also to evaluate new peripheral analgesic substances.

The aim of the present investigation was to describe and validate an electronic mechanical test for quantification of the intensity of inflammatory nociception in mice. The electronic pressure-meter test consists of inducing the animal hindpaw flexion reflex by poking the plantar region with a polypropylene pipette tip adapted to a hand-held force transducer. This method was compared to the classical von Frey filaments test in which pressure intensity is automatically recorded after the nociceptive hindpaw flexion reflex. The electronic pressure-meter and the von Frey filaments were used to detect time versus treatment interactions of carrageenin-induced hypernociception. In two separate experiments, the electronic pressure-meter was more sensitive than the von Frey filaments for the detection of the increase in nociception (hypernociception) induced by small doses of carrageenin (30 µg). The electronic pressure-meter detected the antinociceptive effect of non-steroidal drugs in a dose-dependent manner. Indomethacin administered intraperitoneally (1.8-15 mg/kg) or intraplantarly (30-300 µg/paw) prevented the hypersensitive effect of carrageenin (100 µg/paw). The electronic pressure-meter also detected the hypernociceptive effect of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2; 10-100 ng) in a dose-dependent manner. The hypernociceptive effect of PGE2 (100 ng) was blocked by dipyrone (160 and 320 µg/paw) but not by intraplantar administration of indomethacin (300 µg/paw). The present results validate the use of the electronic pressure-meter as more sensitive than the von Frey filaments in mice. Furthermore, it is an objective and quantitative nociceptive test for the evaluation of the peripheral antinociceptive effect of anti-inflammatory analgesic drugs, which inhibit prostaglandin synthesis (indomethacin) or directly block the ongoing hypernociception (dipyrone).

In the last few years, hydrostatic pressure has been extensively used in the study of both protein folding and misfolding/aggregation. Compared to other chemical or physical denaturing agents, a unique feature of pressure is its ability to induce subtle changes in protein conformation, which allow the stabilization of partially folded intermediate states that are usually not significantly populated under more drastic conditions (e.g., in the presence of chemical denaturants or at high temperatures). Much of the recent research in the field of protein folding has focused on the characterization of folding intermediates since these species appear to be involved in a variety of disease-causing protein misfolding and aggregation events. The exact mechanisms of these biologicalphenomena, however, are still poorly understood. Here, we review recent examples of the use of hydrostatic pressure as a tool to obtain insight into the forces and energetics governing the productive folding or the misfolding and aggregation of proteins.

Pressure-driven and temperature-driven transitions of two thermoresponsive polymers, poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (pNIPAM) and poly(N-vinylisobutyramide) (pNVIBA)), in both a soluble linear polymer form and a cross-linked hydro-gel form, were examined by a dynamic light-scattering method and direct microscopic observation, respectively. Their behavior was compared with that of protein systems. Changes in some characteristic parameters in the time-intensity correlation functions of dynamic light-scattering measurement of aqueous solutions of pNIPAM at various pressures and temperatures showed no essential differences during temperature and pressure scanning and, as a whole, the motions of polymers in aqueous solutions were similar in two types of transitions until chain shrinkage occurred. The gels (cross-linked polymer gels) prepared from the thermoresponsive polymers also showed similar volume transitions responding to the pressure and temperature increase. In temperature transitions, however, gels showed drastic volume shrinkage with loss of transparency, while pressure-induced transition showed a slow recovery of transparency while keeping the size, after first transient drastic volume shrinkage with loss of transparency. At a temperature slightly higher than the transition under atmospheric temperature, so-called reentry of the volume change and recovery of the transparency were observed during the pressure-increasing process, which implies much smaller aggregation or non-aggregated collapsed polymer chains in the gel at higher pressures, indicating a certain mechanistic difference of the dehydration processes induced by temperature and pressure.

The objective of this thesis was to study value creation through sponsor-ship in a new emerging electronic sports environment. Sub-questions were formulated which helped in finding answers to the main research question. Theory of traditional sports and practice of electronic sports were compared with each other in order to find out how theories of tradi-tional sports fare in the new environment. B2B-relationship model of Actors, resources and activities is used in this thesis to help in clarifying the different variables used in electronic sports sponsorship environment. The empirical research was conducted via interviews with the managers working in electronic sports environment. One of the main conclusions is that relationship management is really important.. Actors in electronic sports need to find and create win-win-win situations. This means that they need to benefit the actors in sponsoring relationship and also the community.

Thin-film photovoltaic solar cells based on the Cu(In1−xGax)Se2 (CIGS) alloys have attracted more and more attention due to their large optical absorption coefficient, long term stability, low cost, and high efficiency. Modern theoretical studies of this material with first-principles calculations can provide accurate description of the electronic structure and yield results in close agreement with experimental values, but takes a large amount of calculation time. In this work, we use first-principles calculations based on the computationally affordable meta- generalized gradient approximation of the density-functional theory to investigate electronic and structural properties of the CIGS alloys. We report on the simulation of the lattice parameters and band gaps, as a function of chemical composition. The obtained results were found to be in a good agreement with the available experimental data.

The aim of this work was to study the effect of the hydrolysis degree (HD) and the concentration (C PVA) of two types of poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and the effect of the type and the concentration of plasticizers on the phase properties of biodegradable films based on blends of gelatin and PVA, using a response-surface methodology. The films were made by casting and the studied properties were their glass (Tg) and melting (Tm) transition temperatures, which were determined by diferential scanning calorimetry (DSC). For the data obtained on the first scan, the fitting of the linear model was statistically significant and predictive only for the second melting temperature. In this case, the most important effect on the second Tm of the first scan was due to the HD of the PVA. In relation to the second scan, the linear model could be fit to Tg data with only two statistically significant parameters. Both the PVA and plasticizer concentrations had an important effect on Tg. Concerning the second Tm of the second scan, the linear model was fit to data with two statistically significant parameters, namely the HD and the plasticizer concentration. But, the most important effect was provoked by the HD of the PVA.
