A visible/near-infrared optical sensor based on an ITO/SiOx/n-Si structure with internal gain is presented. This surface-barrier structure was fabricated by a low-temperature processing technique. The interface properties and carder transport were investigated from dark current-voltage and capacitance-voltage characteristics. Examination of the multiplication properties was performed under different light excitation and reverse bias conditions. The spectral and pulse response characteristics are analysed. The current amplification mechanism is interpreted by the control of electron current by the space charge of photogenerated holes near the SiOx/Si interface. The optical sensor output characteristics and some possible device applications are presented.

As teachers, we are challenged everyday to solve pedagogical problems and we have to fight for our students’ attention in a media rich world. I will talk about how we use ICT in Initial Teacher Training and give you some insight on what we are doing. The most important benefit of using ICT in education is that it makes us reflect on our practice. There is no doubt that our classrooms need to be updated, but we need to be critical about every peace of hardware, software or service that we bring into them. It is not only because our budgets are short, but also because e‐learning is primarily about learning, not technology. Therefore, we need to have the knowledge and skills required to act in different situations, and choose the best tool for the job. Not all subjects are suitable for e‐learning, nor do all students have the skills to organize themselves their own study times. Also not all teachers want to spend time programming or learning about instructional design and metadata. The promised land of easy use of authoring tools (e.g. eXe and Reload) that will lead to all teachers become Learning Objects authors and share these LO in Repositories, all this failed, like previously HyperCard, Toolbook and others. We need to know a little bit of many different technologies so we can mobilize this knowledge when a situation requires it: integrate e‐learning technologies in the classroom, not a flipped classroom, just simple tools. Lecture capture, mobile phones and smartphones, pocket size camcorders, VoIP, VLE, live video broadcast, screen sharing, free services for collaborative work, save, share and sync your files. Do not feel stressed to use everything, every time. Just because we have a whiteboard does not mean we have to make it the centre of the classroom. Start from where you are, with your preferred subject and the tools you master. Them go slowly and try some new tool in a non‐formal situation and with just one or two students. And you don’t need to be alone: subscribe a mailing list and share your thoughts with other teachers in a dedicated forum, even better if both are part of a community of practice, and share resources. We did that for music teachers and it was a success, in two years arriving at 1.000 members. Just do it.

Here we report on the structural, optical, electrical and magnetic properties of Co-doped and (Co,Mo)-codoped SnO2 thin films deposited on r-cut sapphire substrates by pulsed laser deposition. Substrate temperature during deposition was kept at 500 degrees C. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the undoped and doped films are crystalline with predominant orientation along the [1 0 1] direction regardless of the doping concentration and doping element. Optical studies revealed that the presence of Mo reverts the blue shift trend observed for the Co-doped films. For the Co and Mo doping concentrations studied, the incorporation of Mo did not contribute to increase the conductivity of the films or to enhance the ferromagnetic order of the Co-doped films. There is an interest to create zinc/tin alloys to replace cadmium as a corrosion protective coating material. Existing aqueous electroplating systems for these alloys are commercially available but have several limitations. Dangerous and highly toxic complexing agents are uses e.g. cyanides. To overcome these problems, ionic liquids could provide a solution to obtain an alloy containing 20 to 30% of zinc. Ionic liquids (IL’s) often have wider electrochemical windows which allow the deposition of e.g. refractive metals that can not be deposited from aqueous solutions. In IL’s it is often not necessary to add complexing agents. The Zn/Sn alloy deposition from IL’s is therefore a promising application for the plating industry. Nevertheless, there are some issues with this alternative for aqueous systems. The degradation of the organic components, the control of the concentration of two metals and the risk of a two phase deposition instead of an alloy had to be overcome first. It is the main purpose of this thesis to obtain a Zn/Sn alloy with 20% zinc using IL’s as an electrolyte. First a separate study was performed on both the zinc and the tin deposition. Afterwards, an attempt to deposit a Zn/Sn alloy was made. An introduction to a study about the electrodeposition of refractive metals concludes this work. It initiated the research for oxygen-free IL’s to deposit molybdenum or tungsten. Several parameters (temperature, metal source and concentration, organic complexing agents,…) were optimized for both the zinc, tin and zinc/tin deposition. Experiments were performed both in a parallel plate cell and a Hull cell, so as to investigate the effect of current density as well. Ethaline200 was selected as electrolyte. As substrate, brass and iron were selected, while as anode a plate of the metal to deposit was chosen, tin for the alloy. The best efficiencies were always obtained on brass; however the iron substrate resulted in the best depositions. A concentration of 0.27M ZnCl2, 0.07M SnCl2 with 0.015M of K3-HEDTA as complexant resulted in a deposition containing the desired alloy with the amount of 20% zinc and 80% tin with good appearance. Refractory metals as molybdenum and tungsten cannot be electrodeposited from aqueous solutions without forming a co-deposition with Ni, Co or Fe. Here, IL’s could again provide a solution. A first requirement is the dissolution of a metal source. MoO3 could be suitable, however there are doubts about using oxides. Oxygen-free IL’s were sought for. A first attempt was the combination of ZnCl2 with chlormequat (CCC), which gave liquids below 150°C in molar ratios of 2 : 1 and 3 : 1. Unfortuna tely, MoO3 didn’t dissolve in these IL’s. Another route to design oxygen-free IL’s was the synthesis of quaternary ammonium salts. None of the methods used, proved viable as reaction time was long and resulted in very low yields. Therefore, no sufficient quantities were obtained to perform the possible electrochemical behavior of refractive metals.

Este artigo abordará as relações sociais dos bebês a partir da brincadeira, no sentido de apresentar orientações para a docência na educação infantil com crianças bem pequenas. O quadro teórico metodológico se situa na interlocução entre as áreas da Pedagogia da Infância e da Sociologia da Infância. Toma por base uma investigação sobre a ação social dos bebês na creche, que tinha como preocupação central conhecer os bebês e as suas ações no sentido de pensar a prática pedagógica junto das crianças bem pequenas. Trata-se de um estudo etnográfico com um grupo de bebês e profissionais, que com eles atuavam, numa creche em Braga. Para a compreensão da estruturação das ações e relações sociais pelos bebês foram desenvolvidas observações participantes, com registos em diário de campo e vídeo, o que permitiu uma aproximação bastante profícua das experiências cotidianas das crianças.

Este texto parte do pressuposto de que a forma como se organizam as dinâmicas sociais entre adultos e crianças, nomeadamente nos contextos educativos, não é isenta de marcas de invisibilidade e exclusão, no que diz respeito ao protagonismo das últimas nos processos educativos. Pretendemos discutir de que forma as crianças se apresentam, em muitos contextos, como um grupo geracional discriminado no que diz respeito ao seu direito a assumir uma efectiva participação no processo educativo, tentando demonstrar que este estatuto é, ainda, alimentado por um conjunto de pressupostos associados à ideia da incapacidade e incompetência, associada tacitamente ao sujeito criança, influenciando as relações e dinâmicas com as crianças. Apresentamos neste texto a defesa de uma acção pedagógica participativa e baseada nos direitos da criança, sobretudo a partir dos seus direitos de participação, para questionar tais pressupostos e práticas excludentes face ao grupo social da infância. São estes os caminhos para a construção de dinâmicas sociais ativas, mais críticas e emancipatórias e promotoras de práticas sociais fundamentais numa sociedade livre, pacífica, equitativa e democrática

A sociedade contemporânea tem acompanhado a evolução da Internet, ligando cada vez mais pessoas que exigem mais dela a cada dia que passa e desencadeando uma proliferação tecnológica nunca antes observada. A utilização de recursos, como vídeo e áudio na Internet, tem ganho nos últimos anos um crescente interesse. No entanto, constata-se a carência ou falta de recursos educativos digitais na área do áudio, que sejam capazes de apresentar uma pedagogia eficiente face a um tema muito complexo e extenso, para todos aqueles que queiram aprender de forma mais aprofundada o áudio como componente de engenharia. Na internet, sites de vídeos como Youtube ensinam a usar software de edição de áudio como Audacity, conceitos sobre som e áudio. Contudo, todos estão espalhados, sendo que a maior parte deles não possui fundamentos científicos ou uma bibliografia que acompanhe os conteúdos que leccionam. A proposta desta investigação é pesquisar sobre conhecimentos e recursos de áudio, integrando-os num produto Learning Object, Investigar noções teóricas sobre o som, equipamentos e técnicas usadas na área, assim como obter melhores resultados num espaço para a gravação que o aluno poderia fazer, aglomerando esses conceitos num protótipo mediamente desenvolvido. Foi necessária uma investigação extensa nesta área e avaliar e investigar a possibilidade de um recurso educativo, como o DALCH, capaz de proporcionar uma aprendizagem efectiva dos conceitos relacionados com áudio, que é um conceito complexo. Uma vez realizada essa investigação, foi necessário desenvolver, testar e avaliar um produto Learning Object, que apresentasse o áudio na sua globalidade, desde conceitos básicos até conceitos inerentes à própria produção. Foi possível aferir que esta solução pode contribuir para a formação desses alunos mediante uma experiência de aprendizagem agradável e intuitiva.
Oxidative Leaching of metals from electronic waste with solutions based on quaternary ammonium salts

The treatment of electric and electronic waste (WEEE) is a problem which receives ever more attention. An inadequate treatment results in harmful products ending up in the environment. This project intends to investigate the possibilities of an alternative route for recycling of metals from printed circuit boards (PCBs) obtained from rejected computers. The process is based on aqueous solutions composed of an etchant, either 0.2 M CuCl2.2H2O or 0.2 M FeCl3.6H2O, and a quaternary ammonium salt (quat) such as choline chloride or chlormequat. These solutions are reminiscent of deep eutectic solvents (DES) based on quats. DES are quite similar to ionic liquids (ILs) and are used as well as alternative solvents with a great diversity of physical properties, making them attractive for replacement of hazardous, volatile solvents (e.g. VOCs). A remarkable difference between genuine DES and ILs with the solutions used in this project is the addition of rather large quantities of water. It is shown the presence of water has a lot of advantages on the leaching of metals, while the properties typical for DES still remain. The oxidizing capacities of Cu(II) stem from the existence of a stable Cu(I) component in quat based DES and thus the leaching stems from the activity of the Cu(II)/Cu(I) redox couple. The advantage of Fe(III) in combination with DES is the fact that the Fe(III)/Fe(II) redox couple becomes reversible, which is not true in pure water. This opens perspectives for regeneration of the etching solution. In this project the leaching of copper was studied as a function of gradual increasing water content from 0 - 100w% with the same concentration of copper chloride or iron(III) chloride at room temperature and 80ºC. The solutions were also tested on real PCBs. At room temperature a maximum leaching effect for copper was obtained with 30w% choline chloride with 0.2 M CuCl2.2H2O. The leaching effect is still stronger at 80°C, b ut of course these solutions are more energy consuming. For aluminium, tin, zinc and lead, the leaching was faster at 80ºC. Iron and nickel dissolved easily at room temperature. The solutions were not able to dissolve gold, silver, rhodium and platinum.

A frequência de um Estágio de Ensino Especializado proporciona uma oportunidade de proximidade entre futuro docente e aluno. A observação de metodologias e o envolvimento com a música e contexto musical das escolas e alunos é algo fundamental para a formação correcta de docentes. Devido ao carácter prático do ensino de um instrumento, esta interacção demonstra-se fundamental para a experiência pedagógica. Neste estágio pretendeu-se aumentar o grau de qualidade de ensino e o número de ferramentas pedagógicas, comparando-as com ferramentas aprendidas e articuladas por experiência pré-adquirida como docente. A pedagogia de ensino de piano tem vindo a sofrer várias modificações e adaptações, como reflexo do meio e dos recursos disponíveis. A existência de conservatórios onde os alunos podem frequentar um grande número de disciplinas trouxe vantagens significativas para a sua cultura musical. Embora o estudo do instrumento continue a ser a prática principal, a diminuição nos horários de estudo obriga a uma selecção criteriosa dos conteúdos programáticos deste instrumento, de modo a não por em causa o desenvolvimento técnico dos alunos. Uma área raramente encontrada nestes conteúdos é a leitura à primeira vista. A investigação aqui apresentada pretendeu compreender como se realiza a leitura à primeira vista de uma partitura ao piano e como se pode desenvolver esta competência. Recorrendo a fontes bibliográficas consultadas e à análise de métodos de ensino representativos, foram alvo de investigação a forma como um leitor lê à primeira vista uma partitura, qual a importância do tacto e da visão, e até que ponto esta competência pode ser estudada e desenvolvida. Quais são os factores-chave da leitura à primeira vista? Até que ponto a prática ao instrumento pode influenciar esta capacidade? Embora a leitura à primeira vista tenha sido retirada como disciplina e forma de avaliação em vários estabelecimentos de ensino, a realização de alguns inquéritos pretendeu avaliar a importância dada a esta disciplina, entre professores e alunos.

In this work, tin selenide thin films (SnSex) were grown on soda lime glass substrates by selenization of dc magnetron sputtered Sn metallic precursors. Selenization was performed at maximum temperatures in the range 300 °C to 570 °C. The thickness and the composition of the films were analysed using step profilometry and energy dispersive spectroscopy, respectively. The films were structurally and optically investigated by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and optical transmittance and reflectance measurements. X-Ray diffraction patterns suggest that for temperatures between 300 °C and 470 °C, the films are composed of the hexagonal-SnSe2 phase. By increasing the temperature, the films selenized at maximum temperatures of 530 °C and 570 °C show orthorhombic-SnSe as the dominant phase with a preferential crystal orientation along the (400) crystallographic plane. Raman scattering analysis allowed the assignment of peaks at 119 cm−1 and 185 cm−1 to the hexagonal-SnSe2 phase and those at 108 cm−1, 130 cm−1 and 150 cm−1 to the orthorhombic-SnSe phase. All samples presented traces of condensed amorphous Se with a characteristic Raman peak located at 255 cm−1. From optical measurements, the estimated band gap energies for hexagonal-SnSe2 were close to 0.9 eV and 1.7 eV for indirect forbidden and direct transitions, respectively. The samples with the dominant orthorhombic-SnSe phase presented estimated band gap energies of 0.95 eV and 1.15 eV for indirect allowed and direct allowed transitions, respectively.

Copper zinc tin sulfide (CZTS) is a promising Earthabundant thin-film solar cell material; it has an appropriate band gap of ~1.45 eV and a high absorption coefficient. The most efficient CZTS cells tend to be slightly Zn-rich and Cu-poor. However, growing Zn-rich CZTS films can sometimes result in phase decomposition of CZTS into ZnS and Cu2SnS3, which is generally deleterious to solar cell performance. Cubic ZnS is difficult to detect by XRD, due to a similar diffraction pattern. We hypothesize that synchrotron-based extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS), which is sensitive to local chemical environment, may be able to determine the quantity of ZnS phase in CZTS films by detecting differences in the second-nearest neighbor shell of the Zn atoms. Films of varying stoichiometries, from Zn-rich to Cu-rich (Zn-poor) were examined using the EXAFS technique. Differences in the spectra as a function of Cu/Zn ratio are detected. Linear combination analysis suggests increasing ZnS signal as the CZTS films become more Zn-rich. We demonstrate that the sensitive technique of EXAFS could be used to quantify the amount of ZnS present and provide a guide to crystal growth of highly phase pure films.
