Four diboron-contained ladder-type pi-conjugated compounds 1-4 were designed and synthesized. Their thermal, photophysical, electrochemical properties, as well as density functional theory calculations, were fully investigated. The single crystals of compounds 1 and 3 were grown, and their crystal structures were determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. Both compounds have a ladder-type g-conjugated framework. Compounds I and 2 possess high thermal stabilities, moderate solid-state fluorescence quantum yields, as well as stable redox properties, indicating that they are possible candidates for emitters and charge-transporting materials in electroluminescent (EL) devices. The double-layer device with the configuration of [ITO/NPB (40 nm)/1 or 2 (70 nm)/LiF (0.5 nm)/Al (200 nm)] exhibited good EL performance with the maximum brightness exceeding 8000 cd/m(2).

The organic films of vanadyl-phthalocyanine (VOPc) compounds showed weak epitaxy growth (WEG) behavior on thin ordered para-sexiphenyl (p-6P) layer with high substrate temperature. The WEG of VOPc molecules standing up on the p-6P layer leaded to high in-plane orientation and their layer-by-layer growth behavior. In consequence, high quality VOPc films were obtained, which were consisted of lamellar crystals. Organic field-effect transistors with VOPc/p-6P films as active layers realized high mobility of above 1 cm(2)/V s. This result indicated that nonplanar compounds can obtain a device performance better than planar compounds, therefore, it may provide a rule to find disklike organic semiconductor materials.

Thin films of phthalocyanine compounds show weak epitaxial growth on a monodomain film of a rod-like molecule (see figure). The resulting organic electronic devices exhibit high charge carrier mobilities close to those of the single-crystal devices.

A series of europium complexes were synthesized and their electroluminescent (EL) characteristics were studied. It was found by comparison that the different substituted groups, such as methyl, chlorine, and nitryl, on ligand 1,10-phenanthroline affect significantly the EL performance of devices based on these complexes. The more methyl-substituted groups on ligand 1,10-phenanthroline led to higher device efficiency. A chlorine-substituted group showed the approximate EL performance as two methyl-substituted groups, whereas a nitryl substituent reduced significantly the EL luminous efficiency. However, beta-diketonate ligand TTA and DBM exhibited similar EL performance. The improved EL luminous efficiency by proper substituted groups on the 1, 10-phenanthroline was attributed to the reduction of the energy loss caused by light hydrogen atom vibration, as well as concentration quenching caused by intermolecular interaction, and the match of energy level between the ligand and Eu3+.

Two copper-organic framework supramolecular assemblies of p-sulfonatocalix[4]arene and 1,10-phenanthroline Cu-2[C12H8N2][C28H20S4O16][H2O](23.5) (1) and Cu-3[C12H8N2](3)[C28H19S4O16]Cl[H2O](17.6) (2) were obtained by pH-dependent synthesis at room temperature. Both structures show ID water-filled channels (rectangular shape in I and triangular in 2) with the solvent-accessible volume occupying 30.8% (1) and 24.2% (2) of the unit-cell volume, respectively. The calixarene molecules in both structures assume analogous cone shapes of C-2 nu symmetry instead of the conventional C-4 nu symmetry. Their connecting to different amounts of copper/phenanthroline cations leads to the formation of different structures.

Novel hole-transporting molecules containing 1,4-bis(carbazolyl)benzene as a central unit and different numbers of diphenylamine moieties as the peripheral groups have been synthesized and characterized. These compounds are thermally stable with high glass transition temperatures of 141-157 degreesC and exhibit chemically reversible redox processes. Their amorphous state stability and hole transport properties can be significantly improved by increasing the number of diphenylamine moieties in the outer part and by controlling the symmetry of the carbazole-based molecules. These compounds can be used as good hole-tran sporting materials for organic electroluminescent (EL) devices. The device performance based on tri- and tetra-substituted carbazole derivatives is comparable to that of a typical 4,4'-bis[N-(1-naphthyl)-N-phenylamino] biphenyl (NPB)-based device.

The activities/properties of two molecules with identical formula but different configuration states of the asymmetric atoms are different. Thus, usually the common topological indices are not suitable. In this study, the chiral topological indices were obtained by extending A(mi) indices suggested by our laboratory and molecular connectivity indices. The modified topologial indices have been used for the studies on D2 for dopamine receptor and a receptor activities of fourteen N-alkylated 3-(3-hydroxypyenyl)-piperidines. It has been observed that selected variables possess low correlations. The results obtained by using multiple regression analysis and artificial neural networks are satisfactory.

Dipolar fluorescent compounds containing electron-accepting pyrazine-2,3-dicarbonitrile and electron-donating arylamine moiety have been designed and synthesized. The optical and electrochemical properties of these compounds can be adjusted by changing pi-bridge length and the donor (D) strength. Organic light-emitting devices based on these compounds are fabricated. Saturated red emission of (0.67, 0.33) and the external quantum efficiency as high as 1.41% have been demonstrated for one of these compounds.

Room-temperature ionic liquids are good solvents for a wide of organic, inorganic and organometallic compounds. Typically consisting of nitrogen-containing organic cations and inorganic anions, they are easy to recycle, nonflammable, and have no detectable vapor pressure. More recently, ionic liquids have been found to be excellent solvents for a number of chemical reactions, e. g. hydrogenation, alkylation, epoxidation, Heck-vinylation, Suzuki cross-coupling reactions and enzyme catalyzed organic reactions. This paper focuses on the recent development of using ionic liquids as solvents for transition metal and enzyme catalyzed reactions.

Isotactic polypropylene in its a modification (alpha iPP) crystallises epitaxially on polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and several hemiacids or salts of substituted benzoic acids via a novel contact plane, namely (110): so far, the only known contact plane involved in alpha iPP homo- and hetero-epitaxies was (010). In spite of its complicated architecture (alternation of antichiral helices with different azimuthal settings), the (110)(alpha iPP) contact plane displays well defined, if not prominent, rows of methyl side chains parallel to the crystallographic (112) direction (at 57 degrees to the c-axis) and approximate to 5.5 Angstrom apart. The matching contact planes of the substrates display linear gratings made of rows of e.g. chlorine atoms or PTFE chains with similar approximate to 5.5 Angstrom inter-row or interchain distances. Various morphologies are observed in iPP thin films crystallised at different cooling rates in the presence of PTFE; they can be analysed in terms of a succession and interplay of successive epitaxies: initial alpha iPP/PTFE heteroepitaxy, followed by alpha iPP/alpha iPP and gamma iPP/alpha iPP homoepitaxies. In this study, silica-based transparent organic-inorganic hybrid films were prepared by the sol-gel method. Tetraethoxysilane and 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate were used as the inorganic and organic compounds, respectively. Lanthanide complexes [Eu(phen)(2)]Cl-3 were incorporated into the organically modified silicates (ORMOSIL) and the luminescence properties of the resultant hybrid films (ORMOSIL:[Eu(phen)(2)]Cl-3) were characterized. The relative quantum efficiency was observed higher and the lifetimes were longer in hybrid films than those in pure silica films. Furthermore, thermal stability of hybrid films incorporating various concentration of Eu(III) complex was studied. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

A dimethylformamide-polyhydroxyl cellulose organo-hydrogel has been prepared, and its applications for enzyme immobilization in construction of organic phase biosensors have been exploited. With horseradish peroxidase, tyrosinase, and bilirubin oxidase immobilized in the organohydrogel, enzyme electrodes can be operated in various situations, including aqueous buffer, oil/water mixtures, and anhydrous organic solvents, and even in dimethylformamide, to determine analytes of different solubilities, e.g., organic peroxides, phenolic compounds and bilirubin. Biosensing has no restrictions in terms of measuring media and solubilities of analytes.

A new molecular topological index, EATI is proposed based on the extended adjacency matrix, It has a hitherto unheard of power of discrimination and can be applied to discriminate various kinds of organic compounds, such as structures containing heteroatoms, etc.. The relationship between the alpha-N index and physical properties of neutral phosphorus extractants is studied. Using the general alpha-N index which could describe extractants with minute difference in structure, the good correlation between it and various physical properties of the neutral phosphorus extractants (e.g., densities, refractive index, shift ratio of paper chromatography and IR frequencies of bond P = O) is obtained. The result indicates that general alpha-N index is a good topological index of organic compounds.
