Sea-surface temperature (SST) estimates in the sediment core MD01-2390 based on planktonic foraminiferal species abundances using five different transfer function techniques suggest nearly unchanged or unusually higher temperatures in the tropical southern South China Sea (SCS) during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) relative to modern temperatures. These results are in contrast to substantial cooling of 2-5 °C inferred by geochemical (Uk'37, Mg/Ca ratios) and terrestrial proxies from the western tropical Pacific region. Using multivariate statistics we show that the glacial southern SCS harboured unique planktonic foraminiferal assemblages that have no modern analogs. Analyses of faunal variation through the core reveal that planktonic foraminiferal assemblages responded to temperature changes inferred from Mg/Ca data but that this signal is subdued by superimposed variations in the relative abundance of Pulleniatina obliquiloculata and Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (dextral). These species occur in glacial samples at proportions that are not observed in the calibration data set. The glacial high abundance of N. pachyderma (dextral) are interpreted to reflect a seasonal (winter) inflow of cold surface water from the northeast via the Bashi Strait due to the combined effects of an intensified winter monsoon, a southward shift of the polar front and the eastward migration of the Kuroshio Current. In contrast, processes controlling the high relative abundances of P. obliquiloculata during the LGM may be unique to the southern SCS. We propose a scenario involving a stronger (winter) mixing or enhanced upwelling due to an intensified winter monsoon that prevented shallow-dwelling, warm indicators to establish larger populations during the LGM. Our results indicate that a no-analog behaviour of planktonic foraminifera faunas is responsible for the warm glacial conditions in this part of the western Pacific warm pool as implied by foraminiferal transfer functions and that a more significant surface cooling in the region as implied by terrestrial and geochemical (Mg/Ca ratios; alkenone unsaturation index) marine proxies is a more likely scenario.

This chapter documents the chemical changes produced by hydrothermal alteration of basalts drilled on Leg 83, in Hole 504B. It interprets these chemical changes in terms of mineralogical changes and alteration processes and discusses implications for geochemical cycling. Alteration of Leg 83 basalts is characterized by nonequilibrium and is heterogeneous on a scale of centimeters to tens or hundreds of meters. The basalts exhibit trends toward losses of SiO2, CaO, TiO2; decreases in density; gains of MnO, Na2O, CO2, H2O+ , S; slight gains of MgO; increased oxidation of Fe; and variable changes in A12O3. Some mobility of rare earth elements (REE) also occurred, especially the light REE and Eu. The basalts have lost Ca in excess of Mg + Na gains. Variations in chemical trends are due to differing water/rock ratios, substrate control of secondary mineralogy, and superimposition of greenschist and zeolite facies mineralogies. Zeolitization resulted in uptake of Ca and H2O and losses of Si, Al, and Na. These effects are different from the Na uptake observed in other altered basalts from the seafloor attributed to the zeolite facies and are probably due to higher temperatures of alteration of Leg 83 basalts. Basalts from the transition zone are enriched in Mn, S, and CO2 relative to the pillow and dike sections and contain a metal-sulfide-rich stockwork zone, suggesting that they once were located within or near a hydrothermal upflow zone. Samples from the bottom of the dike section are extensively fractured and recrystallized indicating that alteration was significantly affected by local variations in permeability.

We measured oxygen-isotope compositions of 16 siliceous rocks from Deep Sea Drilling Project Sites 463, 464, 465, and 466 (Leg 62). Samples are from deposits that range in age from about 40 to 103 m.y. and that occur at sub-bottom depths of 9 to 461 meters. Mean d18O values range from 28.4 to 36.8 per mil and 36.0 ± 0.3 per mil for quartz-rich and opal-CTrich rocks, respectively. d18O values in chert decrease with increasing sub-bottom depth; the slope of the d18O/depth curve is less steep for Site 464 than for the other sites which indicates that chert at Site 464 formed at higher temperatures than chert at Sites 463, 465, and 466. Temperatures of formation of cherts were 7 to 42°C, using the silica-water fractionation factor of Knauth and Epstein (1976), or 19 to 56°C, using the equation of Clayton et al. (1972). Temperatures in the sediment where the cherts now occur are lower than their isotopically determined temperatures of formation, which means that the cherts record an earlier history when temperatures in the sediment section were greater. Estimated sediment temperatures when the cherts formed are comparable to, but generally slightly lower than, those calculated from Knauth and Epstein's equation. The isotopic composition of cherts is more closely related to environment of formation (diagenetic environment) or paleogeothermal gradients, than to paleoclimates (bottom-water temperatures). Opal-CT-rich rocks may better record paleo-bottom-water temperature. In Leg 62 cherts, better crystallinity of quartz corresponds to lower d18O values; this implies progressively higher temperatures of equilibration between quartz and water during maturation of quartz. The interrelationship of d18O and crystallinity is noted also in continental-margin deposits such as the Monterey Formation - but for higher temperatures. The apparent temperature difference between open-ocean and continental-margin deposits can be explained by the dominant control of temperature on silica transformation in the rapidly deposited continental-margin deposits, whereas time, as well as temperature, has a strong influence on the transformations in open-ocean deposits. Comparisons between the chemistry and d18O values of cherts reveal two apparent trends: both boron and SiO2 increase as d18O increases. However, the correspondence between SiO2 and d18O is only apparent, because the two cherts lowest in SiO2 are also the most deeply buried, so the trend actually reflects depth of burial. The correspondence between boron and d18O supports the conclusion that boron is incorporated in the quartz crystal structure during precipitation

Sites 677 and 678 were drilled on ODP Leg 111 to test hypotheses about the nature and pattern of hydrothermal circulation on a mid-ocean ridge flank. Together with earlier results from DSDP Site 501/504 and several heatflow and piston coring surveys covering a 100-km**2 area surrounding the three drill sites, they confirm that hydrothermal circulation persists in this 5.9-m.y.-old crust, both in basement and through the overlying sediments (Langseth et al., 1988, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.ir.111.102.1988). Profiles of sediment pore-water composition with depth at the three drill sites show both vertical and horizontal gradients. The shapes of the profiles and their variation from one site to another result from a combination of vertical and horizontal diffusion, convection, and reaction in the sediments and basement. Chemical species that are highly reactive in the siliceous-calcareous biogenic sediments include bicarbonate (alkalinity), ammonium, sulfate, manganese, calcium, strontium, lithium, silica, and possibly potassium. Reactions include bacterial sulfate reduction, mobilization of Mn2+, precipitation of CaCO3, and recrystallization of calcareous and siliceous oozes to chalk, limestone, and chert. Species with profiles more affected by reaction in basaltic basement than in the sediments include Mg, Ca, Na, K, and oxygen isotopes. Reaction in basement at 60?C and at higher temperatures has produced a highly altered basement formation water that is uniform in composition over distances of several kilometers. As inferred from the composition of the basal sediment pore water at the three sites, this uniformity extends from up flow zone to downflow zone in basement and the sediments. It exists in spite of large variations in heat flow and depth to basement, apparently as a result of homogenization by hydrothermal circulation in basement. Profiles for chlorinity, Na, Mg, and other species in the sediment pore waters confirm that Site 678, drilled on a localized heatflow high identified by Langseth et al. (1988), is a site of long-lived upwelling of warm water from basement through the sediments at velocities of 1 to 2 mm/yr. The upflow through the anomalously thin sediments is apparently localized above an uplifted fault block in basement. This site and other similar sites in the survey area give rise to lateral diffusion and possibly flow through the sediments, which produces lateral gradients in sediment pore-water composition at sites such as 501/504. The complementary pore-water profiles at the low-heatflow Site 677 2 km to the south indicate that downflow is occurring through the sediments there, at comparable rates of 1 to 2 mm/yr.

Dolerites sampled from the lower sheeted dikes from Hole 504B during Ocean Drilling Program Legs 137 and 140, between 1562.4 and 2000.4 mbsf, were examined to document the mineralogy, petrography, and mineral parageneses associated with secondary alteration, to constrain the thermal history and composition of hydrothermal fluids. The main methods used were mineral chemical analyses by electron microprobe, X-ray diffraction, and cathodoluminescence microscopy. Temperatures of alteration were estimated on the basis of single and/or coexisting mineral chemistry. Permeability is important in controlling the type and extent of alteration in the studied dike section. At the meter-scale, intervals of weakly altered dolerites containing fresh olivine are interpreted as having experienced restricted exposure to hydrothermal fluids. At the centimeter- or millimeter-scale, alteration patches and extensively altered halos adjacent to veins reflect the permeability related to intergranular primary porosity and cracks. Most of the sheeted dike alteration in this case resulted from non-focused, pervasive fluid-rock interaction. This study confirms and extends the previous model for hydrothermal alteration at Hole 504B: hydrothermal alteration at the ridge axis followed by seawater recharge and off-axis alteration. The major new discoveries, all related to higher temperatures of alteration, are: (1) the presence of hydrothermal plagioclase (An80-95), (2) the presence of deuteric and/or hydrothermal diopside, and (3) the general increasing proportion of amphiboles, and particularly magnesio-hornblende with depth. We propose that the dolerites at Hole 504B were altered in five stages. Stage 1 occurred at high temperatures (less than 500° to 700°C) and involved late-magmatic formation of Na- and Ti-rich diopside, the hydrothermal formation of Na, Ti-poor diopside and the hydrothermal formation of an assemblage of An-rich plagioclase + hornblende. Stage 2 occurred at lower temperatures (250°-320°C) and is characterized by the appearance of actinolite, chlorite, chlorite-smectite, and/or talc (in low permeability zones) and albite. During Stage 3, quartz and epidote precipitated from evolved hydrothermal fluids at temperatures between 310° and 320°C. Anhydrite appeared during Stage 4 and likely precipitated directly from heated seawater. Stage 5 occurred off-axis at low temperatures (250°C) with laumontite and prehnite from evolved fluids.

Changes in the seawater carbonate chemistry (ocean acidification) from increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2 ) concentrations negatively affect many marine calcifying organisms, but may benefit primary producers under dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) limitation. To improve predictions of the ecological effects of ocean acidification, the net gains and losses between the processes of photosynthesis and calcification need to be studied jointly on physiological and population levels. We studied productivity, respiration, and abundances of the symbiont-bearing foraminifer species Marginopora vertebralis on natural CO2 seeps in Papua New Guinea and conducted additional studies on production and calcification on the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) using artificially enhanced pCO2 . Net oxygen production increased up to 90% with increasing pCO2 ; temperature, light, and pH together explaining 61% of the variance in production. Production increased with increasing light and increasing pCO2 and declined at higher temperatures. Respiration was also significantly elevated (~25%), whereas calcification was reduced (16-39%) at low pH/high pCO2 compared to present-day conditions. In the field, M. vertebralis was absent at three CO2 seep sites at pHTotal levels below ~7.9 (pCO2 ~700 µatm), but it was found in densities of over 1000 m(-2) at all three control sites. The study showed that endosymbiotic algae in foraminifera benefit from increased DIC availability and may be naturally carbon limited. The observed reduction in calcification may have been caused either by increased energy demands for proton pumping (measured as elevated rates of respiration) or by stronger competition for DIC from the more productive symbionts. The net outcome of these two competing processes is that M. vertebralis cannot maintain populations under pCO2 exceeding 700 µatm, thus are likely to be extinct in the next century.

Cores from Sites 1129, 1131, and 1132 (Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 182) on the uppermost slope at the edge of the continental shelf in the Great Australian Bight reveal the existence of upper Pleistocene bryozoan reef mounds, previously only detected on seismic lines. Benthic foraminiferal oxygen isotope data for the last 450,000 years indicate that bryozoan reef mounds predominantly accumulated during periods of lower sea level and colder climate since stage 8 at Sites 1129 and 1132 and since stage 4 at the deeper Site 1131. During glacials and interstadials (stages 2-8) the combination of lowered sea level, increased upwelling, and absence of the Leeuwin Current probably led to an enhanced carbon flux at the seafloor that favored prolific bryozoan growth and mound formation at Site 1132. At Site 1129, higher temperatures and downwelling appear to have inhibited the full development of bryozoan mounds during stages 2-4. During that time, favorable hydrographic conditions for the growth of bryozoan mounds shifted downslope from Site 1129 to Site 1131. Superimposed on these glacial-interglacial fluctuations is a distinct long-term paleoceanographic change. Prior to stage 8, benthic foraminiferal assemblages indicate low carbon flux to the seafloor, and bryozoan mounds, although present closer inshore, did not accumulate significantly at Sites 1129 and 1132, even during glacials. Our results show that the interplay of sea level change (eustatic and local, linked to platform progradation), glacial-interglacial carbon flux fluctuations (linked to local hydrographic variations), and possibly long-term climatic change strongly influenced the evolution of the Great Australian Bight carbonate margin during the late Pleistocene.

The marine diazotrophic cyanobacterium Trichodesmium responds to elevated atmospheric CO2 partial pressure (pCO2) with higher N2 fixation and growth rates. To unveil the underlying mechanisms, we examined the combined influence of pCO2(150 and 900 µatm) and light (50 and 200 µmol photons m-2 s-1) on TrichodesmiumIMS101. We expand on a complementary study that demonstrated that while elevated pCO2 enhanced N2 fixation and growth, oxygen evolution and carbon fixation increased mainly as a response to high light. Here, we investigated changes in the photosynthetic fluorescence parameters of photosystem II, in ratios of the photosynthetic units (photosystem I:photosystem II), and in the pool sizes of key proteins involved in the fixation of carbon and nitrogen as well as their subsequent assimilation. We show that the combined elevation in pCO2 and light controlled the operation of the CO2-concentrating mechanism and enhanced protein activity without increasing their pool size. Moreover, elevated pCO2 and high light decreased the amounts of several key proteins (NifH, PsbA, and PsaC), while amounts of AtpB and RbcL did not significantly change. Reduced investment in protein biosynthesis, without notably changing photosynthetic fluxes, could free up energy that can be reallocated to increase N2 fixation and growth at elevated pCO2 and light. We suggest that changes in the redox state of the photosynthetic electron transportchain and posttranslational regulation of key proteins mediate the high flexibility in resources and energy allocation in Trichodesmium. This strategy should enableTrichodesmium to flourish in future surface oceans characterized by elevated pCO2, higher temperatures, and high light.

Concerns about increasing atmospheric CO2 concentrations and global warming have initiated studies on the consequences of multiple-stressor interactions on marine organisms and ecosystems. We present a fully-crossed factorial mesocosm study and assess how warming and acidification affect the abundance, body size, and fatty acid composition of copepods as a measure of nutritional quality. The experimental set-up allowed us to determine whether the effects of warming and acidification act additively, synergistically, or antagonistically on the abundance, body size, and fatty acid content of copepods, a major group of lower level consumers in marine food webs. Copepodite (developmental stages 1-5) and nauplii abundance were antagonistically affected by warming and acidification. Higher temperature decreased copepodite and nauplii abundance, while acidification partially compensated for the temperature effect. The abundance of adult copepods was negatively affected by warming. The prosome length of copepods was significantly reduced by warming, and the interaction of warming and CO2 antagonistically affected prosome length. Fatty acid composition was also significantly affected by warming. The content of saturated fatty acids increased, and the ratios of the polyunsaturated essential fatty acids docosahexaenoic- (DHA) and arachidonic acid (ARA) to total fatty acid content increased with higher temperatures. Additionally, here was a significant additive interaction effect of both parameters on arachidonic acid. Our results indicate that in a future ocean scenario, acidification might partially counteract some observed effects of increased temperature on zooplankton, while adding to others. These may be results of a fertilizing effect on phytoplankton as a copepod food source. In summary, copepod populations will be more strongly affected by warming rather than by acidifying oceans, but ocean acidification effects can modify some temperature impacts

The Arctic Ocean is warming at two to three times the global rate and is perceived to be a bellwether for ocean acidification. Increased CO2 concentrations are expected to have a fertilization effect on marine autotrophs, and higher temperatures should lead to increased rates of planktonic primary production. Yet, simultaneous assessment of warming and increased CO2 on primary production in the Arctic has not been conducted. Here we test the expectation that CO2-enhanced gross primary production (GPP) may be temperature dependent, using data from several oceanographic cruises and experiments from both spring and summer in the European sector of the Arctic Ocean. Results confirm that CO2 enhances GPP (by a factor of up to ten) over a range of 145-2,099?µatm; however, the greatest effects are observed only at lower temperatures and are constrained by nutrient and light availability to the spring period. The temperature dependence of CO2-enhanced primary production has significant implications for metabolic balance in a warmer, CO2-enriched Arctic Ocean in the future. In particular, it indicates that a twofold increase in primary production during the spring is likely in the Arctic.

As a result of the variscan collision, several allochtonous complexes were emplaced on the Iberian margin in Devonian times, among them the Cabo Ortegal Complex comprising the Moeche ophiolitic sequence. Copper has been won from several mines (Piquitos I & II, Barqueira, Maruxa) from disseminated ores and thin massive sulphide layers in the Moeche Unit, a strongly deformed meta-volcanic sequence comprising mainly quartz-chlorite schists and mylonites, which defines the top of the ophiolite. The ores were metamorphosed and strongly deformed under brittle conditions (for pyrite), but their textures are often apparently post-deformational, due to very common solution-transfer processes; they are composed mostly of pyrite and chalcopyrite, with minor sphalerite, pyrrhotite, etc., and with traces of native gold and PGE. The geology, mineralogy, and geochemistry of the orebodies relate closely to VMS of the Cu-Zn (Cyprus) type. Fluid inclusion studies allowed an estimation of metamorphic conditions at pressures of 2/2’5 kb and T 325/350ºC. New determinations using the chlorite geothermometer yield temperatures around 320 ºC, corresponding to pressures near 2 kb according to the isochores deduced from the fluid inclusion study, although in the Barqueira mine higher temperatures, up to 350 ºC, are found, corresponding to presssures up to 2’5 kb. Pb isotopic compositions of pyrite point to a double source of Pb, i.e. a main mantle and a subordinate crustal source. The values for 87SR/86Sr in pyrite support this interpretation, but some results suggest later mobilization in an open system, corresponding to solution-transfer. Age determinations of pyrite deduced from the Pb isotope uranogenic graph, ≈ 480 Ma, do not fit with the metamorphic ages published for the Moeche Unit, and might point to the age of Pb extraction from the mantle.

In this research the mechanical behaviour of pure tungsten (W) and its alloys (2 wt.% Ti–0.47 wt.% Y2O3 and 4 wt.% Ti–0.5 wt.% Y2O3) is compared. These tungsten alloys, have been obtained by powder metallurgy. The yield strength, fracture toughness and elastic modulus have been studied in the temperature interval of 25 °C to 1000 °C. The results have shown that the addition of Ti substantially improves the bending strength and toughness of W, but it also dramatically increases the DBTT. On the other hand, the addition of 0.5% Y2O3, is enough to improve noticeably the oxidation behaviour at the higher temperatures. The grain size, fractography and microstructure are studied in these materials. Titanium is a good grain growth inhibitor and effective precursor of liquid phase in HIP. The simultaneous presence of Y2O3 and Ti permits to obtain materials with low pores presence

El manejo pre-sacrificio es de vital importancia en acuicultura, ya que afecta tanto a las reacciones fisiológicas como a los procesos bioquímicos post mortem, y por tanto al bienestar y a la calidad del producto. El ayuno pre-sacrificio se lleva a cabo de forma habitual en acuicultura, ya que permite el vaciado del aparato digestivo de restos de alimento y heces, reduciendo de esta manera la carga bacteriana en el intestino y la dispersión de enzimas digestivos y potenciales patógenos a la carne. Sin embargo, la duración óptima de este ayuno sin que el pez sufra un estrés innecesario no está clara. Además, se sabe muy poco sobre la mejor hora del día para realizar el sacrificio, lo que a su vez está regido por los ritmos diarios de los parámetros fisiológicos de estrés. Finalmente, se sabe que la temperatura del agua juega un papel muy importante en la fisiología del estrés pero no se ha determinado su efecto en combinación con el ayuno. Además, las actuales recomendaciones en relación a la duración óptima del ayuno previo al sacrificio en peces no suelen considerar la temperatura del agua y se basan únicamente en días y no en grados día (ºC d). Se determinó el efecto del ayuno previo al sacrificio (1, 2 y 3 días, equivalente a 11,1-68,0 grados día) y la hora de sacrificio (08h00, 14h00 y 20h00) en trucha arco iris (Oncorhynchus mykiss) de tamaño comercial en cuatro pruebas usando diferentes temperaturas de agua (Prueba 1: 11,8 ºC; Prueba 2: 19,2 ºC; Prueba 3: 11,1 ºC; y Prueba 4: 22,7 ºC). Se midieron indicadores biométricos, hematológicos, metabólicos y de calidad de la carne. En cada prueba, los valores de los animales ayunados (n=90) se compararon con 90 animales control mantenidos bajo condiciones similares pero nos ayunados. Los resultados sugieren que el ayuno tuvo un efecto significativo sobre los indicadores biométricos. El coeficiente de condición en los animales ayunados fue menor que en los controles después de 2 días de ayuno. El vaciado del aparato digestivo se produjo durante las primeras 24 h de ayuno, encontrándose pequeñas cantidades de alimento después de 48 h. Por otra parte, este vaciado fue más rápido cuando las temperaturas fueron más altas. El peso del hígado de los animales ayunados fue menor y las diferencias entre truchas ayunadas y controles fueron más evidentes a medida que el vaciado del aparato digestivo fue más rápido. El efecto del ayuno hasta 3 días en los indicadores hematológicos no fue significativo. Los niveles de cortisol en plasma resultaron ser altos tanto en truchas ayunadas como en las alimentadas en todas las pruebas realizadas. La concentración media de glucosa varió entre pruebas pero mostró una tendencia a disminuir en animales ayunados a medida que el ayuno progresaba. En cualquier caso, parece que la temperatura del agua jugó un papel muy importante, ya que se encontraron concentraciones más altas durante los días 2 y 3 de ayuno en animales mantenidos a temperaturas más bajas previamente al sacrificio. Los altos niveles de lactato obtenidos en sangre parecen sugerir episodios de intensa actividad muscular pero no se pudo encontrar relación con el ayuno. De la misma manera, el nivel de hematocrito no mostró efecto alguno del ayuno y los leucocitos tendieron a ser más altos cuando los animales estaban menos estresados y cuando su condición corporal fue mayor. Finalmente, la disminución del peso del hígado (índice hepatosomático) en la Prueba 3 no se vio acompañada de una reducción del glucógeno hepático, lo que sugiere que las truchas emplearon una estrategia diferente para mantener constantes los niveles de glucosa durante el periodo de ayuno en esa prueba. En relación a la hora de sacrificio, se obtuvieron niveles más bajos de cortisol a las 20h00, lo que indica que las truchas estaban menos estresadas y que el manejo pre-sacrificio podría resultar menos estresante por la noche. Los niveles de hematocrito fueron también más bajos a las 20h00 pero solo con temperaturas más bajas, sugiriendo que las altas temperaturas incrementan el metabolismo. Ni el ayuno ni la hora de sacrificio tuvieron un efecto significativo sobre la evolución de la calidad de la carne durante los 3 días de almacenamiento. Por el contrario, el tiempo de almacenamiento sí que parece tener un efecto claro sobre los parámetros de calidad del producto final. Los niveles más bajos de pH se alcanzaron a las 24-48 h post mortem, con una lata variabilidad entre duraciones del ayuno (1, 2 y 3 días) en animales sacrificados a las 20h00, aunque no se pudo distinguir ningún patrón común. Por otra parte, la mayor rigidez asociada al rigor mortis se produjo a las 24 h del sacrificio. La capacidad de retención de agua se mostró muy estable durante el período de almacenamiento y parece ser independiente de los cambios en el pH. El parámetro L* de color se incrementó a medida que avanzaba el período de almacenamiento de la carne, mientras que los valores a* y b* no variaron en gran medida. En conclusión, basándose en los resultados hematológicos, el sacrificio a última hora del día parece tener un efecto menos negativo en el bienestar. De manera general, nuestros resultados sugieren que la trucha arco iris puede soportar un período de ayuno previo al sacrificio de hasta 3 días o 68 ºC d sin que su bienestar se vea seriamente comprometido. Es probable que con temperaturas más bajas las truchas pudieran ser ayunadas durante más tiempo sin ningún efecto negativo sobre su bienestar. En cualquier caso, se necesitan más estudios para determinar la relación entre la temperatura del agua y la duración óptima del ayuno en términos de pérdida de peso vivo y la disminución de los niveles de glucosa en sangre y otros indicadores metabólicos. SUMMARY Pre-slaughter handling in fish is important because it affects both physiological reactions and post mortem biochemical processes, and thus welfare and product quality. Pre-slaughter fasting is regularly carried out in aquaculture, as it empties the viscera of food and faeces, thus reducing the intestinal bacteria load and the spread of gut enzymes and potential pathogens to the flesh. However, it is unclear how long rainbow trout can be fasted before suffering unnecessary stress. In addition, very little is known about the best time of the day to slaughter fish, which may in turn be dictated by diurnal rhythms in physiological stress parameters. Water temperature is also known to play a very important role in stress physiology in fish but the combined effect with fasting is unclear. Current recommendations regarding the optimal duration of pre-slaughter fasting do not normally consider water temperature and are only based on days, not degree days (ºC d). The effects of short-term fasting prior to slaughter (1, 2 and 3 days, between 11.1 and 68.0 ºC days) and hour of slaughter (08h00, 14h00 and 20h00) were determined in commercial-sized rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) over four trials at different water temperatures (TRIAL 1, 11.8 ºC; TRIAL 2, 19.2 ºC; TRIAL 3, 11.1 ºC; and TRIAL 4, 22.7 ºC). We measured biometric, haematological, metabolic and product quality indicators. In each trial, the values of fasted fish (n=90) were compared with 90 control fish kept under similar conditions but not fasted. Results show that fasting affected biometric indicators. The coefficient of condition in fasted trout was lower than controls 2 days after food deprivation. Gut emptying occurred within the first 24 h after the cessation of feeding, with small traces of digesta after 48 h. Gut emptying was faster at higher water temperatures. Liver weight decreased in food deprived fish and differences between fasted and fed trout were more evident when gut clearance was faster. The overall effect of fasting for up to three days on haematological indicators was small. Plasma cortisol levels were high in both fasted and fed fish in all trials. Plasma glucose response to fasting varied among trials, but it tended to be lower in fasted fish as the days of fasting increased. In any case, it seems that water temperature played a more important role, with higher concentrations at lower temperatures on days 2 and 3 after the cessation of feeding. Plasma lactate levels indicate moments of high muscular activity and were also high, but no variation related to fasting could be found. Haematocrit did not show any significant effect of fasting, but leucocytes tended to be higher when trout were less stressed and when their body condition was higher. Finally, the loss of liver weight was not accompanied by a decrease in liver glycogen (only measured in TRIAL 3), suggesting that a different strategy to maintain plasma glucose levels was used. Regarding the hour of slaughter, lower cortisol levels were found at 20h00, suggesting that trout were less stressed later in the day and that pre-slaughter handling may be less stressful at night. Haematocrit levels were also lower at 20h00 but only at lower temperatures, indicating that higher temperatures increase metabolism. Neither fasting nor the hour of slaughter had a significant effect on the evolution of meat quality during 3 days of storage. In contrast, storage time seemed to have a more important effect on meat quality parameters. The lowest pH was reached 24-48 h post mortem, with a higher variability among fasting durations at 20h00, although no clear pattern could be discerned. Maximum stiffening from rigor mortis occurred after 24 h. The water holding capacity was very stable throughout storage and seemed to be independent of pH changes. Meat lightness (L*) slightly increased during storage and a* and b*-values were relatively stable. In conclusion, based on the haematological results, slaughtering at night may have less of a negative effect on welfare than at other times of the day. Overall, our results suggest that rainbow trout can cope well with fasting up to three days or 68 ºC d prior to slaughter and that their welfare is therefore not seriously compromised. At low water temperatures, trout could probably be fasted for longer periods without negative effects on welfare but more research is needed to determine the relationship between water temperature and days of fasting in terms of loss of live weight and the decrease in plasma glucose and other metabolic indicators.

Gasification is a technology that can replace traditional management alternatives used up to date to deal with this waste (landfilling, composting and incineration) and which fulfils the social, environmental and legislative requirements. The main products of sewage sludge gasification are permanent gases (useful to generate energy or to be used as raw material in chemical synthesis processes), liquids (tars) and char. One of the main problems to be solved in gasification is tar production. Tars are organic impurities which can condense at relatively high temperatures making impossible to use the produced gases for most applications. This work deals with the effect of some primary tar removal processes (performed inside the gasifier) on sewage sludge gasification products. For this purpose, analysis of the gas composition, tar production, cold gas efficiency and carbon conversion were carried out. The tests were performed with air in a laboratory scale plant consisting mainly of a bubbling bed gasifier. No catalyzed and catalyzed (10% wt of dolomite in the bed and in the feeding) tests were carried out at different temperatures (750ºC, 800ºC and 850ºC) in order to know the effect of these parameters in the gasification products. As far as tars were concerned, qualitative and quantitative tar composition was determined. In all tests the Equivalence Ratio (ER) was kept at 0.3. Temperature is one of the most influential variables in sewage sludge gasification. Higher temperatures favoured hydrogen and CO production while CO2 content decreased, which might be partially explained by the effect of the cracking, Boudouard and CO2 reforming reactions. At 850ºC, cold gas efficiency and carbon conversion reached 49% and 76%, respectively. The presence of dolomite as catalyst increased the production of H2 reaching contents of 15.5% by volume at 850 °C. Similar behaviour was found for CO whereas CO2 and CnHm (light hydrocarbons) production decreased. In the presence of dolomite, a tar reduction of up to 51% was reached in comparison with no catalyzed tests, as well as improvements on cold gas efficiency and carbon conversion. Several assays were developed in order to test catalyst performance under more rough gasification conditions. For this purpose, the throughput value (TR), defined as kg sludge “as received” fed to the gasifier per hour and per m2 of cross sectional area of the gasifier, was modified. Specifically, the TR values used were 110 (reference value), 215 and 322 kg/h·m2. When TR increased, the H2, CO and CH4 production decreased while the CO2 and the CnHm production increased. Tar production increased drastically with TR during no catalysed tests what is related to the lower residence time of the gas inside the reactor. Nevertheless, even at TR=322 kg/h·m2, tar production decreased by nearly 50% with in-bed use of dolomite in comparison with no catalyzed assays under the same operating conditions. Regarding relative tar composition, there was an increase in benzene and naphthalene content when temperature increased while the content of the rest of compounds decreased. The dolomite seemed to be effective all over the range of molecular weight studied showing tar removal efficiencies between 35-55% in most cases. High values of the TR caused a significant increase in tar production but a slight effect on tar composition.
