In recent decades, highly motorised countries, such as Australia, have witnessed significant improvements in population health through reductions in fatalities and injuries from road traffic crashes. In Australia, concerted efforts have been made to reduce the road trauma burden since road fatalities reached their highest level in in the early 1970s. Since that time, many improvements have been made drawing on various disciplines to reduce the trauma burden (e.g., road and vehicle design, road user education, traffic law enforcement practices and enforcement technologies). While road fatalities have declined significantly since the mid-1970s, road trauma remains a serious public health concern in Australia. China has recently become the largest car market in the world (Ma, Li, Zhou, Duan, & Bishai, 2012). This rapid motorisation has been accompanied by substantial expansion of the road network as well as a large road trauma burden. Road traffic injuries are a major cause of death in China, reported as accounting for one third of all injury-deaths between 2002 and 2006 (Ma et al., 2012). In common with Australia, China has experienced a reported decline in fatalities since 2002 (see Hu, Wen & Baker, 2008). However, there remains a strong need for action in this area as rates of motorisation continue to climb in China. In Australia, a wide range of organisations have contributed to the improvements in road safety including government agencies, professional organisations, advocacy groups and research centres. In particular, Australia has several highly regarded and multi-disciplinary, university-based research centres that work across a range of road safety fields, including engineering, intelligent transportation systems, the psychology of road user behaviour, and traffic law enforcement. Besides conducting high-quality research, these centres fulfil an important advocacy role in promoting safer road use and facilitating collaborations with government and other agencies, at both the national and international level. To illustrate the role of these centres, an overview will be provided of the Centre for Accident Research and Road Safety-Queensland (CARRS-Q), which was established in 1996 and has gone on to become a recognised world-leader in road safety and injury prevention research. The Centre’s research findings are used to provide evidence-based recommendations to government and have directly contributed to promoting safer road use in Australia. Since 2006, CARRS-Q has also developed strong collaborative links with various universities and organisations in China to assist in building understanding, connections and capacity to assist in reducing the road trauma burden. Preneel, Govaerts and Vandewalle (PGV) analysed the security of single-block-length block cipher based compression functions assuming that the underlying block cipher has no weaknesses. They showed that 12 out of 64 possible compression functions are collision and (second) preimage resistant. Black, Rogaway and Shrimpton formally proved this result in the ideal cipher model. However, in the indifferentiability security framework introduced by Maurer, Renner and Holenstein, all these 12 schemes are easily differentiable from a fixed input-length random oracle (FIL-RO) even when their underlying block cipher is ideal. We address the problem of building indifferentiable compression functions from the PGV compression functions. We consider a general form of 64 PGV compression functions and replace the linear feed-forward operation in this generic PGV compression function with an ideal block cipher independent of the one used in the generic PGV construction. This modified construction is called a generic modified PGV (MPGV). We analyse indifferentiability of the generic MPGV construction in the ideal cipher model and show that 12 out of 64 MPGV compression functions in this framework are indifferentiable from a FIL-RO. To our knowledge, this is the first result showing that two independent block ciphers are sufficient to design indifferentiable single-block-length compression functions.

This paper explores how traditional media organizations (such as magazines, music, film, books, and newspapers) develop routines for coping with an increasingly productive audience. While previous studies have reported on how such organizations have been affected by digital technologies, this study makes a contribution to this literature by being one of the first to show how organizational routines for engaging with an increasingly productive audience actually emerge and diffuse between industries. The paper explores to what extent routines employed by two traditional media organizations have been brought in from other organizational settings, specifically from so-called ‘software platform operators’. Data on routines for engaging with productive audiences have been collected from two information-rich cases in the music and the magazine industries, and from eight high-profile software platform operators. The paper concludes that the routines employed by the two traditional media organizations and by the software platform operators are based on the same set of principles: Provide the audience with (a) tools that allow them to easily generate cultural content; (b) building blocks which facilitate their creative activities; and (c) recognition and rewards based on both rationality and emotion.

During high wind events, crest-fixed profiled steel roof claddings in low-rise buildings can be subjected to combined cyclic wind uplift and in-plane racking (shear) forces. Static and cyclic tests of corrugated steel roof claddings were carried out to investigate the effect of in-plane racking force on the uplift strength, in particular, in relation to the fatigue cracking commonly observed under cyclic wind uplift. The presence of racking force appeared to have insignificant effect on the static and cyclic wind uplift strength. It may therefore be possible to include the diaphragm strength of these claddings in the design of low-rise buildings in a similar manner to valley-fixed claddings. This may lead to a reduction in bracing requirements.

Profiled steel roof claddings in Australia and its neighbouring countries are commonly made of very thin high tensile steel and are crest-fixed intermittently with screw fasteners. The failure of the roof cladding systems was due to a local failure (dimpling of crests I pull-through) at the fasteners under wind uplift Cyclic wind uplift during cyclones causes fatigue cracking to occur at the fastener holes which leads to pull-through failures at lower load levels. At present the design of these claddings is entirely based on testing. In order to improve the understanding of the behaviour and the design and test methods of these claddings under wind uplift loading during storms and cyclones, a detailed investigation consisting of finite element analyses, static and fatigue experiments and cyclonic wind modelling was carried out on two-span roofing assemblies of three common roofing profiles. This paper presents the details of this investigation and its important results.

Osteoarthritis is the most common cause of pain and disability in Australia. This project describes a method where hundreds of cartilage microtissues are generated as tiny building blocks for assembly into larger tissues suitable for cartilage defect repair. Tissue engineering applications has the potential to overcome natural barriers and effectively repair damaged cartilage tissue. However, engineering few-millimeter thick cartilage, similar to human cartilage in the knee, remains a challenge. Utilizing micropellets as building blocks has the potential to overcome some of the challenges in cartilage tissue engineering.

A thiophene–tetrafluorophenyl–thiophene donor–acceptor–donor building block was used in combination with a furan-substituted diketopyrrolopyrrole for synthesizing the polymer semiconductor, PDPPF-TFPT. Due to the balance of tetrafluorophenylene/diketopyrrolopyrrole electron-withdrawing and furan/thiophene electron-donating moieties in the backbone, PDPPF-TFPT exhibits ambipolar behaviour in organic thin-film transistors, with hole and electron mobilities as high as 0.40 cm2 V−1 s−1 and 0.12 cm2 V−1 s−1.

The multiple forms of violence associated with protracted conflict disproportionately affect young people. Literature on conflict-affected children often focuses on the need to provide stability and security through institutions such as schools but rarely considers how young people themselves see these sites as part of their everyday lives. The enduring, pervasive, and complex nature of Colombia’s conflict means many young Colombians face the challenges of poverty, persistent social exclusion, and violence. Such conditions are exacerbated in ‘informal’ barrio communities such as los Altos de Cazucá, just south of the capital Bogotá. Drawing on field research in this community, particularly through interviews conducted with young people aged 10 to 17 this article explores how young people themselves understand the roles of the local school and ngo in their personal conceptualisations of the violence in their everyday lives. The evidence indicates that children use spaces available to them opportunistically and that these actions can and should be read as contributing to local, everyday forms of peacebuilding. The ways in which institutional spaces are understood and used by young people as ‘sites of opportunity’ challenges the assumed illegitimacy of young people’s voices and experiences in these environments.

Epigenetic changes correspond to heritable modifications of the chromosome structure, which do not involve alteration of the DNA sequence but do affect gene expression. These mechanisms play an important role in normal cell differentiation, but aberration is associated also with several diseases, including cancer and neural disorders. In consequence, despite intensive studies in recent years, the contribution of modifications remains largely unquantified due to overall system complexity and insufficient data. Computational models can provide powerful auxiliary tools to experimentation, not least as scales from the sub-cellular through cell populations (or to networks of genes) can be spanned. In this paper, the challenges to development, of realistic cross-scale models, are discussed and illustrated with respect to current work.
