Despite its essential and universal nature, humor has historically received limited attention from the behavioral sciences, particularly as compared to other affective experiences like anger and sadness. Some authors (e.g., Bell & Malhi, 2009; Provine, 2000a; Roeckelein, 2002) suggest that this is because researchers have traditionally failed to "take humor seriously" and, according to O'Connell (cited in Roeckelein, 2002), have too often pursued its study in a piecemeal manner lacking scientific rigor, resulting in "no comprehensive network of facts about the development and purposes of humor in human existence" (p. 1). Roeckelein (2002) found not a single mention of humor, laughter, wit, comedy, or theories relating to these topics in introductory psychology textbooks published between 1930 and 1996.While research interest in the area has grown, especially over the last decade, it remains an elusive and nebulous topic, more likely to be examined in specialty psychology texts (e.g., social psychology and child development) than general ones (Martin, 2007; Roeckelein, 2002). Organizations (e.g., The International Society for Humor Studies; The Association for the Advancement of Therapeutic Humor), journals (e.g., Humor: International Journal of Humor Research) and internet phenomena such as "The Humor Project" (www.humorproiect.com) have made great strides in integrating information about humor from discreet fields such as the arts and humanities, biological and social sciences, education, and business management. Still, the therapeutic potential of humor remains a relatively young subject of serious scientific inquiry (Marci, Moran, & Orr, 2004; Sala, Krupat, & Roter, 2002). Specifically, this paper will address the following topics : 1. The history of psychoanalytic thinking onnarcissism will be discussed, leading up to more recent ideas on the narcissistic personality disorder. 2. Drawing on historical and current ideas, an integrated definition of the narcissistic personality disorder will be presented and elaborated upon, including an examination of differing male/female narcissistic compensatory styles. 3. To foster an understanding of the development of narcissistic defenses and of differing gender styles of defense, various theories relating to gender differences in the narcissistic personality disorder will be explored: self/object relations theories, Kohut's theory on narcissism, psychosexual development theories, behavioral manifestation theories, and bodily development theories.4. The role of preoedipal development, as it relates to the formation of the male/female narcissistic personality disorder, will be examined. This section of the paper will propose that, in the narcissistic personality disorder, a pathological arrest occurred during the second or third year of life in response to trauma experienced at that time. The degree and timing of the trauma and the degree of structuralization preceding the trauma all contribute to the rigidity of the narcissistic disorder and the severity of the pathology. 5. The role of oedipal development in the male/female narcissistic personality disorder will be discussed. This discussion will address the intrapsychic configurations which arise during the oedipal period, after narcissistic defenses have solidified during the preoedipal years. While narcissism can be seen as a developmental line, with narcissistic defenses arising at any time during development, this paper will focus primarily on defenses which arise during the separation/individuation phases of development.

This paper implicitly advocates for a rapprochement between psychodynamic and behavioral approaches to psychotherapy, by exploring the similarities and differences between self psychology and A Family Focused Emotion Communication Training (AFFECT), a behavioral parent training model. Self psychology, a theory with broad applicability, has been applied to several modalities besides behavioral ones. Generally speaking, self psychology and AFFECT are both relational approaches to psychotherapy that emphasize the impact of parent responsiveness, more specifically empathic attunement, on a child's emotional development and emotion regulation. Differentiating aspects of each model are identified to enhance the other model. AFFECT has relevance for pushing self psychology theory more in the direction of operations, which has implications for enhancing the research potential of self psychology, as well as for the training of the self-psychologist. Conversely, self psychology has relevance for coaching the parent with low self-esteem and decreased self-efficacy in AFFECT, which has potential implications for AFFECT treatment outcomes.

The purpose of this investigation was to determine if the way patients are informed of the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS) affects their feelings about themselves as people with MS. Building on illness narrative, I hoped to examine how patients “storied” their experience of being informed of the diagnosis of MS and whether this “storying” had a lasting impact on their self-concept. The alternative would be that no connection exists between how a neurologist informs a patient of the diagnosis and how a person makes sense of their diagnosis and life with MS. Due to study limitations (e.g., small sample size, threat of response bias), the results are unclear about whether the way in which the news is broken has a lasting effect on patients' perceptions. However, review of the literature and patient responses indicate that there is a need for psychological intervention when patients are diagnosed with MS.

This study investigates decision making in mental health care. Specifically, it compares the diagnostic decision outcomes (i.e., the qualityof diagnoses) and the diagnostic decision process (i.e., pre-decisional information acquisition patterns) of novice and experienced clinicalpsychologists. Participants’ eye movements were recorded while they completed diagnostic tasks, classifying mental disorders. In line withprevious research, our findings indicate that diagnosticians’ performance is not related to their clinical experience. Eye-tracking data pro-vide corroborative evidence for this result from the process perspective: experience does not predict changes in cue inspection patterns. Forfuture research into expertise in this domain, it is advisable to track individual differences between clinicians rather than study differenceson the group level.
