Various morphologies of Eu3+ activated gadolinium oxide have been prepared by hydrothermal method using hexadecylamine (HDA) as surfactant at different experimental conditions. The powder X-ray diffraction studies reveal as-formed product is hexagonal Gd(OH)(3):Eu3+ phase and subsequent heat treatment at 350 and 600 degrees C transforms to monoclinic GdOOH:Eu3+ and cubic Gd2O3:Eu3+ phases respectively. SEM pictures of without surfactant show irregular shaped rods along with flakes. However, in the presence of HDA surfactant, the particles are converted into rods of various sizes. The temperature dependent morphological evolution of Gd2O3:Eu3+ without and with HDA surfactant is studied. TEM micrographs of Gd(OH)(3):Eu3+ sample with HDA confirms smooth nanorods with various diameters in the range 20-100 nm. FTIR studies reveal that HDA surfactant plays an important role in conversion of cubic to hexagonal phases. Among these three phases, cubic phase Gd2O3:Eu3+ (lambda(ex) = 254 nm) show red emission at 612 nm corresponding to D-5(0)-> F-7(2) and is more efficient host than the monoclinic counterpart. The band gap for hexagonal Gd(OH)(3):Eu3+ is more when compared to monoclinic GdOOH:Eu3+ and cubic Gd2O3:Eu3+. (C) 2013 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

Undoped and Tb3+ (1-10 mol%) doped CeO2 nanophosphors were synthesized by low temperature solution combustion method. The combustion derived products were well studied by Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Ultraviolet visible (UV-Vis) characterizations. The thermoluminescence (TL) glow curves of CeO2: Tb3+ (1-10 mol%) nanophosphors exposed to c source (60Co) for various doses were discussed for the first time. Two TL glow peaks recorded at 182 and 262 degrees C respectively. The TL intensity at 262 degrees C peak increases linearly in the dose range 0.5-7 kGy. Further, this peak was well defined, intense and glow peak structure does not change with c-dose as a result, it was quite useful in TL dosimetry of ionizing radiations. The kinetic parameters associated with the glow peak were estimated using Chen's half width method. The photoluminescence emission (PLE) spectra consists of characteristic peaks at 544 and 655 nm which were attributed to D-5(4) -> F-7(5) and D-5(4) -> F-7(2) transitions of Tb3+ ions. The optimal concentration of Tb3+ ions was found to be 7 mol%. The color co-ordinates of CeO2: Tb3+ (1-10 mol%) located in green region. Hence, this phosphor was quite useful for display applications. (C) 2013 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

The present experimental study investigates the influence of post-deposition annealing on the transverse piezoelectric coefficient (d(31)) value of ZnO thin films deposited on a flexible metal alloy substrate, and its relationship with the vibration sensing performance. Highly c-axis oriented and crystalline ZnO thin films were deposited on flexible Phynox alloy substrate via radio frequency (RF) reactive magnetron sputtering. ZnO thin film samples were annealed at different temperatures ranging from 100 degrees C to 500 degrees C, resulting in the temperature of 300 degrees C determined as the optimum annealing temperature. The crystallinity, morphology, microstructure, and rms surface roughness of annealed ZnO thin films were systematically investigated by X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), respectively. The piezoelectric d(31) coefficient value was measured by 4-point bending method. ZnO thin film annealed at 300 degrees C was highly c-axis oriented, crystalline, possesses fine surface morphology with uniformity in the grain size. This film showed higher d(31) coefficient value of 7.2 pm V-1. A suitable in-house designed and developed experimental set-up, for evaluating the vibration sensing performance of annealed ZnO thin films is discussed. As expected the ZnO thin film annealed at 300 degrees C showed relatively better result for vibration sensing studies. It generates comparatively higher peak output voltage of 147 mV, due to improved structural and morphological properties, and higher piezoelectric d(31) coefficient value. (C) 2014 Elsevier B. V. CaTiO3:Sm3+ (1-11 mol%) nanophosphors were successfully synthesized by a low temperature solution combustion method LCS]. The structural and morphological properties of the phosphors were studied by using Powder X-ray diffractometer (PXRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray photo electron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). TEM studies indicate that the size of the phosphor is similar to 20-35 nm. Photoluminescence (PL) properties of Sm3+ (1-11 mol%) doped CaTiO3 for NUV excitation (407 nm) was studied in order to investigate the possibility of its use in White light emitting diode (WLED) applications. The emission spectra consists of intra 4f transitions of Sm3+, such as (4)G(5/2) -> H-6(5/2) (561 nm), (4)G(5/2) -> H-6(7/2) (601-611 nm), (4)G(5/2) -> H-6(9/2) (648 nm) and (4)G(5/2) -> H-6(11/2) (703 nm) respectively. Further, the emission at 601-611 nm show strong orange-red emission and can be applied to the orange-red emission of phosphor for the application for near ultra violet (NUV) excitation. Thermoluminescence (TL) of the samples irradiated with gamma source in the dose range 100-500 Gy was recorded at a heating rate of 5 degrees C s(-1). Two well resolved glow peaks at 164 degrees C and 214 degrees C along with shouldered peak at 186 degrees C were recorded. TL intensity increases up to 300 Gy and thereafter, it decreases with further increase of dose. The kinetic parameters namely activation energy (E), frequency factor (s) and order of kinetics were estimated and results were discussed in detail. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The investigation involves preparation and photoluminescence properties of CeO2:Eu3+ (1-11 mol%) nano phosphors by eco-friendly green combustion route using Euphorbia tirucalli plant latex as fuel. The final product was characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), Scanning electron microcopy (SEM) and Transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The PXRD and SEM results reveals cubic fluorite phase with flaky structure. The crystallite size obtained from TEM was found to be similar to 20-25 nm, which was comparable to W-H plots and Scherrer's method. Photoluminescence (PL) emission of all the Eu3+ doped samples shows characteristic bands arising from the transitions of D-5(0) -> F-5(J) (J = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4) manifolds under excitation at 373 and 467 nm excitation. The D-5(0) -> F-7(2) (613 nm) transition often dominate the emission spectra, indicating that the Eu3+ cations occupy a site without inversion center. The highest PL intensity was recorded for 9 mol% Eu3+ ions with 5 ml latex. PL quenching was observed upon further increase in Eu3+ concentration. The international commission on illumination (CIE) chromaticity co-ordinates were calculated from emission spectra, the values (x, y) were very close to national television system committee (NTSC) standard values of pure red emission. The results demonstrate that the synthesized phosphor material could be very useful for display applications. Further, the phosphor material prepared by this method was found to be non toxic, environmental friendly and could be a potential alternative to economical routes. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. The present study examines an improved detoxification and rapid biological degradation of toxic pollutant acrylamide using a bacterium. The acrylamide degrading bacterium was isolated from the soil followed by its screening to know the acrylamide degrading capability. The minimal medium containing acrylamide (30 mM) served as a sole source of carbon and nitrogen for their active growth. The optimization of three different factors was analyzed by using Response Surface Methodology (RSM). The bacteria actively degraded the acrylamide at a temperature of 32 degrees C, with a maximum growth at 30 mM substrate (acrylamide) concentration at a pH of 7.2. The acrylamidase activity and degradation of acrylamide was determined by High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption and Ionization Time of Flight mass spectrometer (MALDI-TOF). Based on 168 rRNA analysis the selected strain was identified as Gram negative bacilli Stenotrophomonas acidaminiphila MSU12. The acrylamidase was isolated from bacterial extract and was purified by HPLC, whose mass spectrum showed a molecular mass of 38 kDa. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Combustion synthesized tetragonal ZrO2: Eu3+ nanophosphors: Structural and photoluminescence studies
Resumo:
Novel crystalline tetragonal ZrO2: Eu3+ phosphors were prepared by a facile and efficient low temperature solution combustion method at 400 +/- 10 degrees C using oxalyl dihydrazide (ODH) as fuel. The powder X-ray diffraction patterns and Rietveld confinement of as formed ZrO2: Eu3+ (1-11 mol%) confirmed the presence of body centered tetragonal phase. The crystallite size estimated from Scherrer's and W-H plots was found to be in the range of 7-17 nm. These results were in good agreement with transmission electron microscopy studies. The calculated microstrain in most of the planes indicated the presence of tensile stress along various planes of the particles. The observed space group (P4(2)/nmc) revealed the presence of cations in the 2b positions (0.75, 0.25, 0.25) and the anions in the 4d positions (0.25, 0.25, 0.45). The optical band gap energies estimated from Wood and Tauc's relation was found to be in the range 4.3-4.7 eV. Photoluminescence (PL) emission was recorded under 394 and 464 nm excitation shows an intense emission peak at 605 nm along with other emission peaks at 537, 592, 605 and 713 nm. These emission peaks were attributed to the transition of D-5(0) -> F-7(J) (J = 0, 1, 2, 3) of Eu3+ ions. The high ratio of Intensity of (D-5(0) -> F-7(2)) and (D-5(0) -> F-7(1)) infers that Eu3+ occupies sites with a low symmetry and without an inversion center. CIE color coordinates indicated the red regions which could meet the needs of illumination devices. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A series of scheelite-type Eu3+-activated CaMoO4 phosphors were synthesized by the nitrate-citrate gel combustion method. All the compounds crystallized in the tetragonal structure with space group I4(1)/a (No. 88). FESEM results reveal the spherical-like morphology. The CaMoO4 phosphor exhibited broad emission centered at 500 nm under the excitation of 298 nm wavelength, while Eu3+-activated CaMoO4 shows an intense characteristic red emission peak at 615 nm at different excitation wavelengths, due to D-5(0) -> F-7(2) transition of Eu3+ ions. The intensities of transitions between different J levels depend on the symmetry of the local environment of Eu3+ ions and were estimated using the Judd-Ofelt analysis. The high asymmetric ratio revealed that Eu3+ occupies sites with a low symmetry and without an inversion center. The CIE chromaticity co-ordinates (x, y) were calculated from emission spectra, and the values were close to the NTSC standard. Therefore, the present phosphor is highly useful for LEDs applications.

Eu3+-activated layered BiOCl phosphors were synthesized by the conventional solid-state method at relatively low temperature and shorter duration (400 degrees C for 1 h). All the samples were crystallized in the tetragonal structure with the space group P4/nmm (no. 129). Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) studies confirmed the plate-like morphology. Photoluminescence spectra exhibit characteristic luminescent D-5(0) -> F-7(J) (J = 0-4) intra-4f shell Eu3+ ion transitions. The electric dipole transition located at 620 nm (D-5(0) -> F-7(2)) was stronger than the magnetic dipole transition located at 594 nm (D-5(0) -> F-7(1)). The evaluated Commission International de l'Eclairage (CIE) color coordinates of Eu3+-activated BiOCl phosphors were close to the commercial Y2O3:Eu3+ and Y2O2S:Eu3+ red phosphors. Intensity parameters (Omega(2), Omega(4)) and various radiative properties such as transition probability (A(tot)), radiative lifetime (tau(rad)), stimulated emission cross-section (sigma(e)), gain bandwidth (sigma(e) x Delta lambda(eff)) and optical gain (sigma(e) x tau(rad)) were calculated using the Judd-Ofelt theory. The experimental decay curves of the D-5(0) level in Eu3+-activated BiOCl have a single exponential profile. In comparison with other Eu3+ doped materials, Eu3+-activated BiOCl phosphors have a long lifetime (tau(exp)), low non-radiative relaxation rate (W-NR), high quantum efficiency (eta) and better optical gain (sigma(e) x tau(rad)). The determined radiative properties revealed the usefulness of Eu3+-activated BiOCl in developing red lasers as well as optical display devices. Further, these samples showed efficient photocatalytic activity for the degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) dye under visible light irradiation. These photocatalysts are useful for the removal of toxic and non-biodegradable organic pollutants in water.

A series of Bi1-xEuxOX (X = F and Br; x = 0, 0.01, 0.03 and 0.05) phosphors were synthesized at relatively low temperature and short duration (500 degrees C, 1 h). Rietveld refinement results verified that all the compounds were crystallized in the tetragonal structure with space group P4/nmm (no. 129). Photoluminescence spectra exhibit characteristic luminescence D-5(0) -> F-7(J) (J = 0-4) intra-4f shell Eu3+ ion transitions. The magnetic dipole (D-5(0) -> F-7(1)) transition dominates the emission of BiOF:Eu3+, while the electric dipole (D-5(0) -> F-7(2)) peak was stronger in BiOBr:Eu3+ phosphors. The evaluated CIE color coordinates for Bi0.95Eu0.05OBr (0.632, 0.358) are close to the commercial Y2O3:Eu3+ (0.645, 0.347) and Y2O2S:Eu3+ (0.647, 0.343) red phosphors. Intensity parameters (Omega(2), Omega(4)) and various radiative properties such as transition rates (A), branching ratios (beta), stimulated emission cross-section (sigma(e)), gain bandwidth (sigma(e) x Delta lambda(eff)) and optical gain (sigma(e) x tau) were calculated using the Judd-Ofelt theory. It was observed that BiOBr:Eu3+ phosphors have a long lifetime (tau) and better optical gain (sigma(e) x tau) as compared to reported Eu3+ doped materials. Furthermore, these compounds exhibit excellent photocatalytic activity for the degradation of rhodamine B dye under visible light irradiation. The determined radiative properties and photocatalytic results revealed that BiOBr:Eu3+ phosphors have potential applications in energy and environmental remedies, such as to develop red phosphors for white light-emitting diodes, red lasers and to remove toxic organic industrial effluents.

We report the synthesis of Eu3+-activated SrMoO4 phosphors by the facile nitrate-citrate gel combustion method. Powder XRD and Rietveld refinement data confirmed that these phosphors have a monophasic scheelite-type tetragonal structure with space group I4(1)/a (No. 88). FESEM micrographs indicate the agglomerated spherical particles. FTIR spectra showed four stretching and bending vibrational modes (2A(u) and 2E(u)). UV-Visible absorption spectroscopy illustrated that the optical band gap energy (E-g) values increase with increase in Eu3+ concentration. The host SrMoO4 phosphor exhibited an intense blue emission under UV excitation (368 nm). The Eu3+-activated SrMoO4 phosphors revealed characteristic luminescence due to Eu3+ ion corresponding to D-5(1) -> F-7(J) (J = 1,2) and D-5(0) -> F-7(J) (J = 1,2,3,4) transitions upon 465 nm excitation. The electric dipole transition located at 615 nm (D-5(0) -> F-7(2)) was stronger than the magnetic dipole transition located at 592 nm (D-5(0) -> F-7(1)). Intensity parameters (Omega(2), Omega(4)) and radiative properties such as transition probabilities (A(T)), radiative lifetime (tau(rad)) and branching ratio (beta) of Eu3+-activated SrMoO4 phosphors were calculated using the Judd-Ofelt theory. Based on the CIE chromaticity diagram, these phosphors can be promising materials for the development of blue and orange-red component in white LEDs. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Callithrix jacchus (common marmoset) is a New World primate monkey, used as an animal model in biomedical research. Marmoset-specific follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) preparation is required to improve superovulation protocols and to develop homologous FSH monitoring assays in these monkeys. In this study, we document the large-scale expression of recombinant marmoset FSH in methylotropic yeast, Pichia pastoris. The recombinant preparation was found to be immunologically active in Western blotting and radioimmunoassay. The preparation displayed receptor binding ability in radioreceptor assay. Based on the receptor binding ability, the yield of fermentation was estimated to be 7.2 mg/L. FSH-induced cAMP assay and estradiol assay revealed that the recombinant hormone is able to induce signal transduction. Both immunological and in vitro biological activity of marmoset FSH was found to be comparable to purified human pituitary FSH, which served as reference hormone for these assays. Thus, the study suggests that a Pichia expression system can be used for large-scale expression of bioactive recombinant marmoset FSH.

Illumination plays an important role in optical microscopy. Kohler illumination, introduced more than a century ago, has been the backbone of optical microscopes. The last few decades have seen the evolution of new illumination techniques meant to improve certain imaging capabilities of the microscope. Most of them are, however, not amenable for wide-field observation and hence have restricted use in microscopy applications such as cell biology and microscale profile measurements. The method of structured illumination microscopy has been developed as a wide-field technique for achieving higher performance. Additionally, it is also compatible with existing microscopes. This method consists of modifying the illumination by superposing a well-defined pattern on either the sample itself or its image. Computational techniques are applied on the resultant images to remove the effect of the structure and to obtain the desired performance enhancement. This method has evolved over the last two decades and has emerged as a key illumination technique for optical sectioning, super-resolution imaging, surface profiling, and quantitative phase imaging of microscale objects in cell biology and engineering. In this review, we describe various structured illumination methods in optical microscopy and explain the principles and technologies involved therein. (C) 2015 Optical Society of America

Glass formation has been examined in the system 15PbO.xPbCl(2).(85-x)PbBr2 (where 0 <= x <= 25)where the PbO concentration is kept constant while PbCl2 and PbBr2 concentrations are varied. The glasses have been examined using thermal and spectroscopic techniques. T-8, Delta C-p, refractive index, optical basicity have been found to remain unaffected by the composition which is a curious feature of these glasses. It is found that there is a wide infrared window available for use in the investigated glasses. The IR window extends from 1000 to 1500 cm(-1) and in glasses where PbCl2 is less than 20 mol%, the window extends up to 2260 cm(-1). X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) revealed that the 4f(5/2) and 4f(7/2) peaks due to f-level transitions have a constant difference in energies, but with energy and FWHM values that varying sensitively and systematically with composition. The observations are discussed and suitable explanations are provided.

We report, for the first time, the photoluminescence properties of Eu3+-doped LiNa3P2O7 phosphor, synthesized by a facile solid-state reaction method in air atmosphere. The crystal structure and phase purity of the phosphors were analyzed by X-ray diffraction analysis. Orthorhombic structural morphology was identified by scanning electron microscopy. The phosphate groups in the phosphor were confirmed by Fourier transform infrared analysis. Bandgap of the phosphor was calculated from the diffuse reflectance spectra data using Kubelka-Munk function. Under 395-nm UV excitation, the phosphors show signs of emitting red color due to the D-5(0) -> F-7(2) transition. In accordance with Judd-Ofelt theory, spectroscopic parameters such as oscillator intensity parameter Omega(t) (t = 2), spontaneous emission probabilities, fluorescence branching ratios and radiative lifetimes were calculated and analyzed for the first time in this system.
