In this paper strontium-site-deficient Sr2Fe1.4Co0.1Mo0.5O6-δ-based perovskite oxides (SxFCM) were prepared and evaluated as the cathode materials for intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFCs). All samples exhibited a cubic phase structure and the lattice shrinked with increasing the Sr-deficiency as shown in XRD patterns. XPS results determined that the transition elements (Co/Fe/Mo) in SxFCM oxides were in a mixed valence state, demonstrating the small polaron hopping conductivity mechanism existed. Among the samples, S1.950FCM presented the lowest coefficient of thermal expansion of 15.62 × 10-6 K-1, the highest conductivity value of 28 S cm-1 at 500 °C, and the lowest interfacial polarization resistance of 0.093 Ω cm2 at 800 °C, respectively. Furthermore, an anode-supported single cell with a S1.950FCM cathode was prepared, demonstrating a maximum power density of 1.16 W cm-2 at 800 °C by using wet H2 (3% H2O) as the fuel and ambient air as the oxidant. These results indicate that the introduction of Sr-deficiency can dramatically improve the electrochemical performance of Sr2Fe1.4Co0.1Mo0.5O6-δ, showing great promise as a novel cathode candidate material for IT-SOFCs.

In this work Cu1.4Mn1.6O4 (CMO) spinel oxide is prepared and evaluated as a novel cobalt-free cathode for intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFCs). Single phase CMO powder with cubic structure is identified using XRD. XPS results confirm that mixed Cu+/Cu2+ and Mn3+/Mn4+ couples exist in the CMO sample, and a maximum conductivity of 78 S cm−1 is achieved at 800 °C. Meanwhile, CMO oxide shows good thermal and chemical compatibility with a 10 mol% Sc2O3 stabilized ZrO2 (ScSZ) electrolyte material. Impedance spectroscopy measurements reveals that CMO exhibits a low polarization resistance of 0.143 Ω cm2 at 800 °C. Furthermore, a Ni-ScSZ/ScSZ/CMO single cell demonstrates a maximum power density of 1076 mW cm−2 at 800 °C under H2 (3% H2O) as the fuel and ambient air as the oxidant. These results indicate that Cu1.4Mn1.6O4 is a superior and promising cathode material for IT-SOFCs.

Purpose: To evaluate the reliability of analysis of only 0-1min clips and 1-4min clips versus the entire clips in performing contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS) of focal liver lesions (FLLs). Methods: Contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS) examinations of 43 single FLLs were performed. All clips were analyzed in three ways, the entire clips, 0-1 min clips and 1-4 min clips, benign or malignant diagnosis and pathological diagnosis of each FLL were concluded by the three ways subsequently. Results: The results of correct diagnosis were assessed using Chi-square test. There was no difference with regard to benign or malignant diagnosis, between 0-1min clips and the entire clips, or between 1-4 min clips and the entire clips (p = 0.243 and p = 0.747, respectively). Moreover, no significant differences in pathological diagnosis existed between 0-1min clips and the entire clips, and 1- 4min clips versus entire clips (p=0.808 and p = 0.808, respectively). No significant differences existed among CEUS entire clip, 0-1min clip and 1-4min clip in identifying FLLs, and based on which the diagnosis of two different FLLs during CEUS with only one injection of contrast agent can be available. Conclusion: Only 0-1min clips or 1-4 min clips can be used to instead of the entre clip in performing CEUS of FLLs.

Purpose: To synthesize a series of analogues of 1,3,4-oxadiazole and to evaluate their antibacterial activity. Methods: Ethyl piperidin-4-carboxylate (1) was mixed with 4-toluenesulfonyl chloride (2) in benignant conditions to yield ethyl 1-(4-toluenesulfonyl)piperidin-4-carboxylate (3) and then 1-(4- toluenesulfonyl)piperidin-4-carbohydrazide (4). Intermolecular cyclization of 4 into 2-mercapto-5-(1-(4- toluenesulfonyl) piperidin-4-yl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole (5) was obtained on reflux with CS2 in the presence of KOH. Molecule 5 was stirred with alkyl halides, 6a-i, in DMF in the presence of LiH to synthesize the final compounds, 7a-i. The structures of these molecules were elucidated by Fourier transform infra-red (FTIR) spectroscopy, proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) and electron impact mass spectrometry (EI-MS). Antibacterial activity was evaluated against five bacterial strains, namely, Salmonella typhi, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis, with ciprofloxacin used as standard antibacterial agent. Results: Out of nine synthesized derivatives, compound 7a was the most active against three bacterial strains, S. typhi, E. coli and P. aeruginosa, with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 9.11 ± 0.40, 9.89 ± 0.45 and 9.14 ± 0.72 μM, respectively, compared with 7.45 ± 0.58, 7.16 ± 0.58 and 7.14 ± 0.18 μM, respectively, for the reference standard (ciprofloxacin). Similarly, compounds 7a - 7c showed relatively good antibacterial activity against B. subtilis strain while compound 7e - 7g revealed good results against S. typhi bacterial strain. Conclusion: The results indicate that S-substituted derivatives of the parent compound are more effective antibacterial agents than the parent compound, even with minor differences in substituents

Purpose: To study the structure-activity relationships of synthetic multifunctional sulfides through evaluation of lipoxygenase and anti-bacterial activities. Methods: S-substituted derivatives of the parent compound 5-(1-(4-chlorophenylsulfonyl) piperidin-3- yl)-1, 3, 4-oxadiazole-2-thiol were synthesized through reaction with different saturated and unsaturated alkyl halides in DMF medium, with NaH catalyst. Spectral characterization of each derivative was carried out with respect to IR, 1H - NMR, 13C - NMR and EI - MS. The lipoxygenase inhibitory and antibacterial activities of the derivatives were determined using standard procedures. Results: Compound 5e exhibited higher lipoxygenase inhibitory potential than the standard (Baicalein®), with % inhibition of 94.71 ± 0.45 and IC50 of 20.72 ± 0.34 μmoles/L. Compound 5b showed significant antibacterial potential against all the bacterial strains with % inhibition ranging from 62.04 ± 2.78, 69.49 ± 0.41, 63.38 ± 1.97 and 59.70 ± 3.70 to 78.32 ± 0.41, while MIC ranged from 8.18 ± 2.00, 10.60 ± 1.83, 10.84 ± 3.00, 9.81 ± 1.86 and 11.73 ± 5.00 μmoles/L for S. typhi, E. coli, P. aeruginosa, B. subtilis and S. aureus, respectively. Compounds 5d, 5e and 5g showed good antibacterial activity against S. typhi and B. subtilis bacterial strains. Conclusion: The results suggest that compound 5e bearing n-pentyl group is a potent lipoxygenase inhibitor, while compound 5b with n-propyl substitution is a strong antibacterial agent. In addition, compounds 5d, 5e and 5g bearing n-butyl, n-pentyl and n-octyl groups, respectively, are good antibacterial agents against S. typhi and B. subtilis.

O repertório instrumental que nos foi legado pela história em registo escrito apresenta uma série de particularidades que constituem o cerne do presente texto. O Códice CLI/1-4 nº 8 da Biblioteca Pública de Évora, já antes sumariamente identificado por José Augusto Alegria na sua catalogação do fundo musical desta instituição, constitui-se como um bom paradigma a esse título. Apelidado por este estudioso como «Colecção de papeis com acompanhamentos de órgão para vários ofícios…» foi identificada a sua proveniência do Mosteiro de S. Bento de Cástris, sendo, por conseguinte, imediata a sua inscrição na Ordem de Cister. O conteúdo do códice, cuja datação remonta muito provavelmente às décadas iniciais do século XIX, é formado por acompanhamentos de órgão para várias rubricas litúrgicas, em muitos casos entrecortados de versos destinados e este instrumento. Nele se incluem harmonizações de rubricas litúrgicas, constituídas essencialmente por hinos, antífonas, rubricas do Ofício (Vésperas, Terças e Matinas), bem como Missas ou excertos de Missas. Um dos seus aspectos mais aliciantes reside todavia no facto de incluir versos para órgão, cuja expressão mundana se encontra para lá da identidade devocional à qual, habitualmente, associamos este género. Constituindo-se como um conjunto de cadernos destinados à execução prática, o Códice CLI/1-4 nº 8 é um produto directo do quotidiano das monjas tangedoras de S. Bento de Cástris e à sua didáctica enquanto organistas. O presente estudo pretende assim trazer a lume uma série de novos dados que nos irão ajudar a conhecer as práticas musicais neste mosteiro cisterciense e com isso a repensar a problemática particular da música sacra portuguesa em inícios de oitocentos.

The kinetics of chain reactions of octanedithiol with styrene, thermally initiated with TX29B50 (a 50:50 wt% solution of TX29 diperoxy initiator in a phthalate plasticizer), have been studied over a range of initiator concentrations, a range of mixture formulations and a range of temperatures. This system has been investigated as a model system for the reactions of polyfunctional thiols with divinyl benzene. The reactions have been shown to follow first-order kinetics for both the thiol and the ene species and to be characterized by a dependence on the initiator concentration to the power of one half. The kinetic rate parameters have been shown to adhere to Arrhenius behaviour. A kinetic model for the chain reactions for this system has been proposed. (C) 2003 Society of Chemical Industry.

A series of bimetallic ruthenium complexes [{Ru(dppe)Cp*}2(μ-C≡CArC≡C)] featuring diethynylaromatic bridging ligands (Ar = 1,4-phenylene, 1,4-naphthylene, 9,10-anthrylene) have been prepared and some representative molecular structures determined. A combination of UV–vis–NIR and IR spectroelectrochemical methods and density functional theory (DFT) have been used to demonstrate that one-electron oxidation of compounds [{Ru(dppe)Cp*}2(μ-C≡CArC≡C)](HC≡CArC≡CH = 1,4-diethynylbenzene; 1,4-diethynyl-2,5-dimethoxybenzene; 1,4-diethynylnaphthalene; 9,10-diethynylanthracene) yields solutions containing radical cations that exhibit characteristics of both oxidation of the diethynylaromatic portion of the bridge, and a mixed-valence state. The simultaneous population of bridge-oxidized and mixed-valence states is likely related to a number of factors, including orientation of the plane of the aromatic portion of the bridging ligand with respect to the metal d-orbitals of appropriate π-symmetry.

This dissertation presents and discusses the preparation of molecular wires (MW) candidates that would then be probed for electron transfer properties. These wires are bridged by 1,4-diethynylbenzene derivatives with alkoxy side chains with palladium and ruthenium metal complex termini. Characterization of these compounds was performed by usual spectroscopic techniques like 1H, 13C{1H} and 31P{1H} NMR, MS, FTIR and UV-Vis as well as by cyclic voltammetry which allowed classifying the candidates in the Robin–Day system and determination of bridges side chain and length effects on electronic transport. Preparation of the 1,4-diethynylbenzene derivatives was done with synthetic pathways that relied heavily in palladium catalyzed cross-couplings (Sonogashira). A family of single ringed 1,4-diethynylbenzene ligands with different length alkoxy side chains (OCH3, OC2H5, OC7H15) was thus prepared allowing for the influence of these ring decorations to be assessed. The ruthenium binuclear rods showed communication between metal centres only when the shorter ligands were used whereas the longer Ru complexes showed only one redox pair in CV studies which is in agreement to non-communicating metal centres. Cyclic voltammetry studies show irreversible one wave processes for palladium dinuclear complexes, making these rods function as molecular insulators. Fluorescence decay studies performed on the prepared compounds (ligands and complexes) show a pattern of decreasing decay times upon coordination to the metal centres which can due to ligand charge redistribution upon coordination leading to non-radiative relaxation paths. Regarding the X-ray structures, two new ligand related structures were obtained as well as new structure for a palladium rod. The effect of the side chains was observed to be important to the wires’ electronic properties when comparing with the analogues without a side chain. The effect brought by longer chains is nevertheless almost negligible.

Polyphenylen-Dendrimere Alexander Josef Berresheim Zusammenfassung der Dissertation Die vorliegende Arbeit mit dem Thema 'Polyphenylen-Dendrimere' ist synthetisch orientiert und behandelt im Wesentlichen den Aufbau neuer Polyphenylen-Dendrimere durch die Anwendung wiederholter Diels-Alder- und Desilylierungs-Reaktionen. Diskutiert wird die Synthese der einzelnen Bausteine, die Synthese der verschiedenen Dendrimere sowie deren Charakterisierung. Außerdem wird die oxidative Cyclodehydrierung geeigneter Dendrimere zu polycyclischen aromatischen Kohlenwasserstoffen beschrieben. Die Synthese der Dendrimere beruht auf einer wiederholten Diels-Alder-Reaktion eines Tetraphenylcyclopentadienons mit einem aromatischen Acetylen. Durch die Variation des Kerns und des Verzweigungsbausteins werden die Wachstumsgrenzen, denen dieser Dendrimer-Typ unterliegt, demonstriert. Es wird gezeigt, dass ein Dendrimer, bei dessen Synthese 3,4-Di-[4-(tri-iso-propylsilylethinyl)phenyl]-2,5-diphenylcyclopentadienon als Verzweigungsbaustein verwendet wird, bis zur vierten Generation wachsen kann. Wird bei der Synthese 3,3',5,5'-Tetraethinylbiphenyl als Kern verwendet, entsteht ein Oligophenylen, das aus 302 Benzolringen besteht.Bei Dendrimeren, deren Synthese auf dem A4B-Baustein 2,3,4,5-Tetrakis-[4-(tri-iso-propylsilylethinyl)phenyl]cyclopentadienon beruht, hängt die höchste Generation, die monodispers hergestellt werden kann, von der Art des Kerns ab. Wird 1,4-Diethinylbenzol verwendet, lassen sich die ersten drei Generationen synthetisieren. Hat der Kern jedoch die Multiplizität 'vier' oder 'sechs' ist bereits bei der zweiten Generation das Ende des monodispersen Wachstums erreicht.Die Charakterisierung der Dendrimere zeigt, dass es sich um Nanopartikel mit einer stabilen Form handelt. Der Durchmesser wächst linear mit der Generation. In einem Fall war es möglich einen Einkristall zu erhalten, dessen Kristallstruktur ermittelt werden konnte. Hierbei zeigt sich, dass es zu einer hohen Einlagerung von Lösungsmitteln in der Festphase kommen kann. Dieses Ergebnis wurde auch durch gezielte Versuche zum Einlagerungsverhalten von Lösungsmitteln in der Festphase bestätigt.Der letzte Teil dieser Arbeit widmet sich der Möglichkeit, die Polyphenylen-Dendrimere zu großen zweidimensionalen Graphitausschnitten zu cyclodehydrieren. Es war generell möglich, polycyclische aromatische Kohlenwasserstoffe mit bis zu 306 Kohlenstoffatomen herzustellen. Es zeigt sich aber auch, dass mit zunehmender Größe des Aromaten, die Intensität der Nebenreaktionen zunimmt.
