In 2003, Eurostat published an 'experimental' dataset on regional innovation levels derived from the Second Community Innovation Survey. This dataset, part of the European Innovation Scoreboard, also contains a range of regional labour market indicators. In this paper, we report an exploratory analysis of this data, focussing on how the labour market characteristics of regions shape regions' absorptive capacity (RACAP) and their ability to assimilate knowledge from public and externally conducted R&D. In particular, we aim to establish whether labour market aspects of RACAP are more important for innovation in prosperous or lagging regions of the European Union (EU). © Springer-Verlag 2006.

Purpose – This paper aims to report on a study that contributes to the understanding of the determinants of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in the largest emerging market, namely China. Design/methodology/approach – The approach is a survey of 600 hotels that resulted in 143 returned responses from top managers. Findings – Market orientation is the most significant predicator of CSR followed by government regulations. In contrast, ownership structure is found to have little effect. Originality/value – Previous research on CSR focuses on its nature and impact on business performance, and is carried out mainly in developed countries. This research contributes to one's understanding of the determinants of CSR in emerging markets like China. © 2007, Emerald Group Publishing Limited

In this article, the authors report the findings of an exploratory study that examines the challenges of developing a market orientation in China, the world’s largest transitional economy. The findings suggest that though managerial actions are relevant, in transitional economies, environmental factors—most notably, government policies—are a major influence on firms’ aspirations to be market oriented.

The Hungarian media shows very contradictory pictures of women today: Successful career women enjoying material well-being is one picture, while the careful mother not working outside the home, keeping together the family is another one. Between these two contradictory poles there are almost no other female actors in the media. Life produces something different. In spite of the fact that there was a big loss of jobs in 1990s, and women’s activity rate decreased while the unemployment rate increased compared to before the 1990s, woman with duel roles are still accepted and common. The first female task is looking after the family and the second one is working outside the home and earning money. In many cases there is a third role: studying in distant or evening courses. In the next chapters we go deeper into this topic. We analyse the different aspects of female labour market positions, and show some relevant characteristics of governmental parental benefits and childcare support, and examine how the new pension system effects women. We also have a quick look at trade unions and show their lack of activity around gender issues. In the labour market analysis of the position of women we use labour force surveys, institution-based labour statistics, and unemployment registers. The Appendix 1 contains short descriptions of these data sources.

This study tested whether contract farming or farmers professional cooperatives (FPCs) improved the social benefit of pork production and income of breeding farmers in China. The main concern of this study is whether institutional arrangement like contract farming or FPCs actually improved the welfare of farmers as expected. To answer this question accurately, we estimated the differentiated market demand of pork products in order to quantify the benefit by transaction types. Our study finds that contract farming or FPCs improved the benefits of pork products, but farmer's income remained lower than that of traditional transaction types. This finding is new in terms of quantifying distribution of the economic values among sales outlets, agro-firms and farmers. It is more reliable because it explicitly captures impacts from both demand side and supply side by structural estimation. In practice, we need to keep it mind the bargaining power of small farmers will not improve instantly even when the contract farming or FPCs are introduced.

We describe the labour market turnovers of young people using a household survey data collected from Cape Town industrial area. We measure the correlates of first unemployment duration out of school and find that matriculation and late cohort (leaving school after 2007) are related with reduced initial unemployment, yet matriculation impacts are reduced among late cohort relative to early cohort. Our estimation reveals that initial unemployment is not related with subsequent employment duration nor wage rates, but related with number of turnovers which suggests that a shorter spell is associated with more stable job tenure.

Following the Office of Fair Trading's review of the British deregulated bus market as a whole in 2009, the issues raised were referred to the Competition Commission. Its final report was published in December 2011. Subsequently, the House of Commons Transport Committee carried out an enquiry into the Commission's report, and reactions to it by the operating industry, user groups, and other bodies, which was published in September 2012. A number of major issues have been raised, including the extent to which price competition may be effective, the appropriate rate of return on capital that would be expected within the industry (and appropriate actions where this is excessive in practice), and industry structure. The importance of competition per se, as distinct from attributes of direct concern to users (such as reliability, frequency, and fares) has also been debated. This paper reviews the issues raised, and outcomes to date, in the light of further evidence on the industry's performance. It is demonstrated similar rates of return could be attained through very different operating strategies, which in turn have very different implications for changes in consumer surplus. The alternative uses made of such profits (for example through reinvestment) may also have markedly different impacts effects on users. Rather than focussing on the dangers of excessive rates of return on capital, the outcomes for service users should be the main issue.

The article examines developments in the marketisation and privatisation of the English National Health Service, primarily since 1997. It explores the use of competition and contracting out in ancillary services and the levering into public services of private finance for capital developments through the Private Finance Initiative. A substantial part of the article examines the repeated restructuring of the health service as a market in clinical services, initially as an internal market but subsequently as a market increasing opened up to private sector involvement. Some of the implications of market processes for NHS staff and for increased privatisation are discussed. The article examines one episode of popular resistance to these developments, namely the movement of opposition to the 2011 health and social care legislative proposals. The article concludes with a discussion of the implications of these system reforms for the founding principles of the NHS and the sustainability of the service.

The year 1968 was yet another year of great success in the exploitation of the fishery resources. The total catch landed was estimated at 108,400 metric tons, worth approximately 77.2 million shillings at the lake shore, and about 220 million shillings in the retail market. This compared favorably with the 1967 catch of 97,000 metric tons, worth approximately 62 million shi11ings on the lake shore and 140 million shillings in the retail market. The 1968 catch exceeded the 1967 catch by 11,400 tons, and also exceeded the expected catch of 105,600 tons in 1971 by 2,800 tons. Most of the fish was consumed within Uganda, where shown a further increase and was estimated at 13 kg. Per head of population.

During the year 1969, the fishing industry maintained a rate of increase that had been witnessed in the three previous years. The total catch landed was estimated at 125300 metric tons, valued at shs 130,500,000/-at the lakeside, and about shs 260,000,000/-in the retail market. This was an increase of 16,900 metric tons over the 1968 figure. The largest increases again came from the Lake Kyoga area, where the Nile Perch and the introduced Tilapia species are still expanding. Large numbers of fishermen from other regions (i.e. from Lake Victoria) moved to Lake Kyoga where catches were high and remunerative. This intensified fishing on this lake, resulting in the high figure of catches recorded. As in the previous year, there was a marked increase in the use of large-mesh gill-nets for catching Nile Perch and Tilapia. Individual Tilapia nilotica of up to 5 kg were quite common, and Nile Perch weighing over 50 kg were also regularly taken. The marketing and distribution side of the industry was as active as ever: 87 people took out specific licences, and 640 fishmongers were licensed by different urban authorities. Elsewhere in the Districts, 7,950 fishmongers were licensed. Host of the fish landed was consumed within Uganda and exports accounted for dnly a very small fraction of the market, mainly composed of frozen fiilets to Kenyai and salted fish to the Republic of the Congo. Kampala market was the most important one, serving also as a central market from where fishmongers bought fish for distribution to rural areas.
