Thousands of self-help organisations (SHOs) exist in Australia but little is known about how they relate to the mainstream health care system. This qualitative study, based in south-east Queensland, aimed to identify examples of collaboration between general practitioners (GPs) and SHOs in order to examine the attributes of successful partnerships. Representatives of six SHOs, identified by key informants as having good collaborative links with GPs, and seven GPs with whom they collaborated, completed semi-structured interviews. The interviews focused on evidence of collaboration and perceptions of benefits and barriers experienced. Maximum variation sampling enabled a cross-section of SHOs in terms of size, funding, and health issue. Although GPs readily identified SHO benefits, they referred patients to them only rarely. SHO credibility, evidence of tangible benefits for patients, ease of contacting the SHO, and correspondence between the SHO?s focus and the GP?s personal and professional interests appear to contribute to the success of partnerships. We conclude that mutually beneficial partnerships between GPs and SHOs exist but are under-utilised. A more coordinated effort is needed to strengthen links between the two sectors.

Synthetic cytotoxic T cell (CTL) epitope peptides provide an effective and safe means of vaccination against cancers and viruses, as these peptides can induce specific CD8+ effector T cells in vivo. However, the effector CD8+ T cells induced by the minimal CTL epitope peptides do not last past about 3 weeks after the induction and no functional memory CD8+ T cells are generated. It is held that simultaneous induction of CD4+ T cells by incorporating peptides containing T-helper epitopes in the vaccine at the time of primary vaccination are necessary for the induction of long-lived functional memory CD8+ T cells. We now report that, surprisingly, incorporation of medium length (>20 AA) peptides devoid of detectable T-helper epitopes in a minimal CTL epitope-based vaccine can also induce long-lasting! functional rumour antigen specific memory CD8+ T cells that are capable of promoting protection against tumour challenge. This observation may have implications for the formulation of therapeutic anti-cancer and anti-virus peptide vaccines where a strong induction of CD4 T help would be undesirable. Although a relatively high percentage of Australian adolescents experience mental health problems, many disturbed adolescents do not receive the help they require, and only a small proportion of adolescents seek professional psychological help. The present study examined adolescents' willingness to seek help and investigated factors that promote and prevent adolescents from seeking help for a mental illness from both formal and informal sources. Secondary school students (254 in number) from schools in Brisbane, Australia completed a questionnaire that examined the relationship between demographic and psychological variables, attitudes toward mental illness, and willingness to seek help for a mental illness. Results suggest that adolescents with greater adaptive functioning, fewer perceived barriers to help seeking, and higher psychological distress were more willing to seek help from formal and informal sources for a mental illness. Greater social support also predicted willingness to seek help from informal sources. Although attitudes toward mental illness did not influence willingness to seek help, less stigmatising attitudes were related to higher knowledge of mental illness, being female, and higher levels of social support. Implications for the present study focus on enhancing the ability of mental health interventions to increase adolescents' willingness to seek psychological help.
