An optimization study of the reaction conditions of Fe(TDCPP)Cl when it is used as catalyst in the hydroxylation of cyclohexane by iodosylbenzene (PhIO) has been carried out, It was found that Fe(TDCPP)Cl follows the classical PhIO mechanism described for Fe(TPP)Cl, which involves the monomeric active species Fe-IV(O)P-+. (I). In the optimized condition ([Fe(TDCPP) = 3.0 X 10(-4) mol l(-1) in 1,2-dichloroethane (DCE); ultrasound stirring at 0 degrees C; PhIO/FeP molar ratio = 100), this FeP led to a yield of cyclohexanol (C-ol) of 96% and a turnover number of 96, Therefore, Fe(TDCPP)Cl may be considered a good biomimetic model and a very stable, resistant and selective catalyst, which yields C-ol as the sole product. DCE showed to be a better solvent than dichloromethane (DCM), 1 DCE:1 MeOH mixture or acetonitrile (ACN). Since the Fe-IV(O)P-+. is capable of abstracting hydrogen atom from DCM, MeOH or ACN, the solvent competes with the substrate. Presence of O-2 lowers the yield of C-ol, as it can further oxidize this alcohol to carboxylic acid in the presence of radicals, Presence of H2O also causes a decrease in the yield, since it converts the active species I into Fe-IV(OH)P, which cannot oxidize cyclohexane. Addition of excess imidazole or OH- to the system results in a decrease in the yield of C-ol, due to the formation of the hexacoordinated complexes Fe(TDCPP)Im(2)(+) (low-spin, beta(2) = 2.5 X 10(8) mol(-2) l(2)) and Fe(TDCPP)(OH)(2)(-) (high-spin, beta(2) = 6.3 X 10(7) mol(-2) l(2)), the formation of both Fe(TDCPP)Im(2)(+) and Fe(TDCPP)(OH)(2)(-) complexes were confirmed by EPR studies. The catalytic activities of Fe(TDCPP)C and Fe(TFPP)Cl were compared, the unusually high yields of C-ol with Fe(TFPP)Cl obtained when ultrasound, DCM and O-2 atmosphere were used, suggest that a parallel mechanism involving the mu-oxo dimer form, O-2 and radicals may also be occurring with this FeP, besides the PhIO mechanism.

A capillary zone electrophoresis method using indirect UV detection for the analysis of chloride and sulfate in alcohol fuel samples was developed. The anions were analyzed in less than 3 min using an electrolyte containing 10 mmol 1(-1) chromate and 0.75 mmol 1(-1) hexamethonium bromide (HMB) as electroosmotic flow modifier. Coefficients of variation were better than 0.6% for migration time (n = 10) and between 2.05 and 2.82% for peak area repeatabilities. Analytical curves of peak area versus concentration in the range of 0.065-0.65 mg kg(-1) for chloride and 0.25-4.0 mg kg(-1) for sulfate were linear with coefficients of correlation higher than 0.9996. The limits of detection for sulfate and chloride were 0.033 and 0.041 mg kg(-1), respectively. Recovery values ranged from 85 to 103%. The method was successfully applied for the quantification of sulfate and chloride in five alcohol fuel samples. The concentration of sulfate varied from 0.45 to 3.12 mg kg(-1). Chloride concentrations were below the method's LOD.

The sols prepared by mixing a ZrOCl2 acidified solution to a hot H2SO4 aqueous solutions were studied in order to clarify the mechanism of thermoreversible sol-gel transition observed in this system. The viscoelastic properties of these suspensions were analyzed during the sol-gel transition by dynamic rheological measurements and quasi-elastic light scattering. The rheological properties were correlated to mass fractal and nearly linear growth models, and percolation theory. The results evidence that the thermoreversible sol-gel transition in this system is due to the formation of a network of physically linked aggregates having fractal structure. The decrease of the SO42- contents in the initial solution leads to the decrease of the fractal dimensionality from 2.3 to 1.8, indicating a change of the kinetic mechanism of aggregate growth. Near the gel point these samples have the typical scaling expected from percolation theory. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Thin films of barium and strontium titanate (BST), synthesized by the polymeric precursor solution and spin coated on [Pt (140nm)/Ti (10 nM)/SiO2(1000 nm)/Si] substrates were found to be photoluminescent at room temperature when heat treated below 973 K, i.e. before their crystallization. First principles quantum mechanical techniques, based on density functional theory (DFT) were employed to study the electronic structure of two periodic models: one is standing for the crystalline BST thin film and the other one for the structurally disordered thin film. The aim is to compare the photoluminescence (PL) spectra of the crystalline and disordered thin films with their UV-vis spectra and with their computed electronic structures. The calculations show that new localized states are created inside the band gap of the crystalline model, as predicted by the UV-vis spectra. The study of the charge repartition in the structure before and after deformation of the periodic model shows that a charge gradient appears among the titanate clusters. This charge gradient, together with the new localized levels, gives favorable conditions for the trapping of holes and electrons in the structure, and thus to a radiative recombination process. Our models are not only consistent with the experimental data, they also allow to explain the relations between structural disorder and photoluminescence at room temperature. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. Barium titanate ceramics were prepared through mechanochemical synthesis starting from fresh prepared barium oxide and titanium oxide in rutile form. Mixture of oxides was milled in zirconia oxide jar in the planetary ball-mill during 30, 60, 120 and 240 min. Extended time of milling directed to formation of higher amount of barium titanate perovskite phase. Barium titanate with good crystallinity was formed after 240 min. Sintering without pre-calcinations step was performed at 1330 degrees C for 2 hours with heating rate of 10 degrees C/min. The XRD, DSC, IR and TEM analyses were performed. Electric and ferroelectric properties were studied. Very well defined hysteresis loop was obtained.

Barium strontium titanate (Ba0.65Sr0.35TiO3) nanocrystalline thin films, which were produced by the soft chemical method, were crystallized at low temperature using a domestic microwave oven. A SiC susceptor were used to absorb the microwave energy and rapidly transfer the heat to the film. Low microwave power and short time have been used. The films obtained are crack-free, well-adhered, and fully crystallized. The microstructure displayed a polycrystalline nature with nanograin size. The metal-BST-metal structure of the thin films treated at 700 degrees C show food electric properties. The ferroelectric nature of the BST35 thin film was indicated by buttertly- shaped C-V curves. The capacitance-frequency curves reveal that the dielectric constant may reach a value up to 800 at 100kHz. The dissipation factor was 0.01 at 100kHz. The charge storage density as function of applied voltage graph showed that the charge storage densities are suitable for use in trench type 64 Mb ( 1-5 mu C/cm(2) and 265 Mb (2-11 mu C/cm(2)) DRAMs. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. Barium titanate (BT) thick films were prepared from mechanically activated powders based on BaCO(3) and TiO(2). After homogenization and milling in a high-energy vibro mill, the powders were calcined at 700 degreesC for 2 h by slow heating and cooling rates. A thick film paste was prepared by mixing BT fine powders with small amount of low temperature sintering aid and organic binder. The thick films were screen-printed on alumina substrates electroded with Ag-Pd. The BT films were sintered at 850 degreesC for 1 h. The thickness was 25-75 mum depending of number of layers. The microstructure of thick films and the compatibility between BT layers and substrate were investigated by SEM Results of dielectric property measurements are also reported. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. Superoxide radical (O2-) is a free radical that may be involved in various toxic processes. Cu-Zn superoxide dismutase catalyses the dismutation of the superoxide free radical and protects cells from oxidative damage, and it has been used clinically. The concentration of Ni2+ and Cu-Zn superoxide dismutase activity were measured in lungs of rats at time intervals of 5, 12, 19, 26, 33, and 40 days following an intratracheal injection of 127 nmol of NiCl2. Nickel chloride increased nickel content and resulted in a significant increase of Cu-Zn superoxide dismutase activity in lungs. This elevation of Cu-Zn superoxide dismutase activity was highest on the 12th day (approximately threefold) and is at levels comparable to controls rats on day 40 onwards. Since Cu-Zn superoxide dismutase activity was increased in lung throughout our experimental period without corresponding increases of Cu2+ and Zn2+, we speculate that the elevation of Cu-Zn superoxide dismutase activity might be due to an increased half-life of the enzyme, induced by nickel.

Bacteria, fungi and plants can convert carbohydrate and phosphoenolpyruvate into chorismate, which is the precursor of various aromatic compounds. The seven enzymes of the shikimate pathway are responsible for this conversion. Shikimate kinase (SK) is the fifth enzyme in this pathway and converts shikimate to shikimate-3-phosphate. In this work, the conformational changes that occur on binding of shikimate, magnesium and chloride ions to SK from Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MtSK) are described. It was observed that both ions and shikimate influence the conformation of residues of the active site of MtSK. Magnesium influences the conformation of the shikimate hydroxyl groups and the position of the side chains of some of the residues of the active site. Chloride seems to influence the affinity of ADP and its position in the active site and the opening length of the LID domain. Shikimate binding causes a closing of the LID domain and also seems to influence the crystallographic packing of SK. The results shown here could be useful for understanding the catalytic mechanism of SK and the role of ions in the activity of this protein.

PTCR barium titanate has been prepared following two different powder preparation techniques: the solid-state reaction route and co-precipitation route for the comparison of results. The co-precipitation route produces better PTCR characteristics with low room temperature resistivity and better reproducibility of prepared samples. The effects of different concentrations of additives like donors, acceptors and excess titanium have been optimized to get good quality PTCR samples. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

The aim of this work is to report on the luminescence properties of BaZnSiO4 activated by Eu3+ and Mn2+ ions. Doped and undoped powder samples were prepared by solid-state reaction starting from oxides and carbonates or Ba2SiO4:Eu3+ and Zn2SiO4:Mn2+ precursors. X-ray diffraction powder data, IR vibrational, and UV-vis luminescence spectroscopies were carried out. Results showed that doped and undoped samples from both types of precursors have the same structure and crystallize with a superstructure of hexagonal kalsilite. Vibrational spectroscopy has confirmed the formation of a silicate group, which outlines differences between products and silicate precursors. The observed luminescence assigned to Eu3+ and Mn2+ transitions covered most parts of the visible spectrum, an important requirement for phosphors in fluorescent low-pressure mercury vapor lamps.
